This vehicle had only 50,216 miles on it when the steering started to fail. On the highway. First there was a gradual loss of control which ultimately got worse. Managed to get it home since I wasn't far away at which time power steering completely failed. Diagnosis revealed a failed steering rack and pinion assembly. Replacement corrected the problem. An internet search revealed this is not an isolated problem and in fact appears to be quite common. I consider the premature failure of this assembly a significant safety issue. It appears there have been recalls for this applying to other years/VIN/manufacturing locations. I should also mention it took a month to get replacement assembly which tells me Ford cannot keep up with the demand. Thankyou.
My Explorer was experiencing the exact symptoms and diagnosis as in the recall 14s06 at low speeds the electronic power steering would fault causing it to be more difficult to steer in short burst it would come and go as well as making a whining sound. I took the vehicle to the dealership and the root of the problem ended up being the steering gear/rack and pinion it cost me roughly 2,000 to have it replaced when I questioned them about this recall they said my vehicle did not fall under recall 14s06 but my vehicle had the exact symptoms of said recall. This is extremely dangerous and can cause a crash with inexperienced drivers. Especially with kids in the car. The vehicle has been repaired at my expense with no help from the dealership as far as parts and labor cost.
I had a repair done tie-rods and control arms and 2 days later my steering start stiffing they said rack and pinion is bad. So I looked up in Ford they said it was a recall for that year and model some years of that year.

I was hearing a grinding noise when turning. It got too loud and took it to dealership. They told me that the rack and pinion has to be replaced. Our power steering went out on our 2013 Ford Explorer while my husband was driving. Luckily he didn't crash the car when it happened because it immediately made it difficult for him to use his steering. The steering is completely out and needs to be fixed. I checked if there was a recall and his car is just outside the manufacture date for the recall that was done in 2014 on 2011-2013 Ford Explorers. We are now out of pocket over $2000 because we have to replace the rack and pinion. The Ford dealer in topeka, KS identified the rack and pinion and worm gear as the fault and none of the technicians know why no manual input was being accepted by the car to turn the steering wheel even a little bit. I feel like this should have been covered under the recall 14s06 from 2014 but apparently my vehicle was manufactured a few days after the dates that Ford defined in that recall. I am out over $3000. 00 for the repair, towing, ride to get to the rental car 100 miles away, rental car, and shipping of my truck after repair to my home. All I want Ford to do is admit that the dates that they put on the recall were not inclusive of all vehicles that were affected.

The rack and pinion steering gear failed. I was not driving at the time. There is a recall on 2011 to 2013 Ford Explorers for this issue, however the recall was for 2011-2013 models build through 2/28/12. Clearly this issue was not resolved in future models. My vehicle's steering failed at 43,000 miles.
The power steering intermittently stopped working. The power steering needs a new steering wheel rack and pinion to properly operate at 65000 miles. There is a recall for this but Ford will not honor my VIN number even though it falls in the year of 2013. This problem makes it unsafe to drive even at low speeds it is hard to steer the wheel. To fix this problem it is $1,500, which will not honor the recall that has been set.
The service power assist and service advance trac warnings come on while driving on the highway. No problem if continue driving, however if turn off power it become impossible to steer when turned back on. The blinkers will also not work when this error happens.
