2 Power Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 10/19/2020

Upon starting my car an alarm came on and said my electric power steering has failed and I could not turn the wheel. So I shut the car off then restarted it and the alarm went away. Two days later this happened while I was backing out of the garage I did the same thing , shut off and restarted the car.

3 Power Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 08/14/2020

The power steering on my 2013 Ford Explorer will intermittently stop working while the vehicle is in motion on a city street. My wife almost had an accident due to this because it makes the vehicle extremely difficult to control. This is a known defect with Explorers and there was a recall issued (14s06) but only for certain VIN numbers. My Explorer was not covered under this recall and I had to pay $1800 to replace the whole power steering rack. This issue is the exact issue the other Explorers were recalled for and my Ford service advisor agreed with me. But he said I still had to pay for it because my VIN was not included in the recall. This is a dangerous safety issue that must be addressed. The recall must be expanded to include more Explorer VIN numbers. This is a hazard not only to the drivers of Explorers but also other motorists. Please investigate this issue. A google search of "Ford Explorer power steering failure" will tell you all you need to know.

4 Power Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 01/07/2020

Power steering gear failed as a result of corrosion due to poor coating.

5 Power Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 12/04/2019

Upon starting vehicle in driveway, experienced intermittant power steering failure also showing stability control error. Vehicle is 2013 Explorer with 95k miles. Turning vehicle off and restarting seems to correct the issue for now. Researced and saw recall 14v286000 for same reported issues, but seems that my VIN does not fall within the designated vehicles.

6 Power Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 11/11/2019

The power steering has failed and is reporting error power assist system failure. The stability control os also reporting an error. The behavior is the same as is described in recall# 14v286000, but the VIN check doesn't include my vehicle in the recall even though I have the same model vehicle that is the subject of the recall. I have seen reports by others reporting the same issue and are also finding their vins are also not included in the recall. Intermittently I used to get the power assist system failure message when I would first start the car, but after turning the car off and then on again everything would be fine. However, a few days ago the system failed permanently. Fortunately it occurred while tue car was stationary, in my driveway. I'm taking car to dealer for repair tomorrow, however, I'm expected the repair to cost around $2000. I dont understand why such a critical part can have such catastrophic failure when the car is only 6 years old and only has 116,000 miles on it. I have owned cars with over 200,000 miles that did require complete replacement of the steering system.

7 Power Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 10/14/2019

Upon starting the vehicle the warning indicator "power steering assist failure" message appears and there is no power steering. Turning off and restarting sometimes resets the warning and power steering will return but not always. There is a current recall with the same problems (14s06) but my VIN falls outside the manufacture date. Reached out to fomoco and they verified there are no recalls and there have never been any recalls for my VIN. One month ago I received a recall letter from Ford for a different issue that I had fixed under the recall by Ford. That recall didn't show up in Fords database either for my VIN when I called today but yet it existed and was fixed. Odd that the same power steering problem keeps occurring on vehicles but Ford wont recognize the problem because of a build location and date. Ford doesn't engineer us spec vehicles based on their manufacturing plant, they seem to be saying that the same engineers that designed a faulty electric power steering motor for chicago didn't design a faulty motor for another plant. Or the original "fix" didn't real "fix" the problem.

8 Power Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 10/09/2019

I have had intermittent issues with the power steering going out. Generally when I start the car. I can usually restart it and it works fine. Just recently, the power steering completely failed while driving. It is still not working. Just took it in to the Ford dealer for repair. They are telling my that my VIN# is not part of the power steering recall, but clearly it has been affected by the recall of the Ford Explorer from 2011-2013.

10 Power Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 10/04/2019

On the evening of 04oct,2019 my vehicle experienced the failure outlined in NHTSA recall #14v286 (power steering failure). Ford needs to expand the number of vehicles covered under this recall as this is a major safety failure that could result in injury, loss of life and/or property damage. Ford does not have a policy or procedure on file to deal with vehicle owners like my self I believe that this is highly regrettable and should be addressed as soon as possible. Thanks ivan b. Stevens 260-312-0698.

11 Power Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 10/04/2019

The electronic steering rack has failed and locked up. 16 Power Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 08/22/2019

2013 Ford Explorer sport - my vehicle is having dangerous steering issues. My vehicle is appears to be experiencing an intermittent power steering failure. While driving the vehicle at any speed there appears to be steering loss. There also appears to be loss of steering when at different steering angels. It appears to shut down the power that is being sent to the power steering assist. This fault happens when in any location, highway, parking lot, local street, city street, etc. The issue happens randomly at all speeds and sometimes when the vehicle is stationary. The most discouraging aspect of this problem with the vehicle is that Ford had recognized the same exact problem with the same make and model vehicle of mine, that were only built just months before mine. It is also disappointing to see that Ford is not even looking into the issue (as told by customer care representative in the philippines).

I have been noticing that under minor steering movements (lane changes or minor curvature in road) I understeer due to intermittent loss of power steering assist for approximately 1 second. When power steering comes back oversteer and end up swerving vigorously due to assist returning. It has created a dangerous situation many times in the past couple weeks can easily create complete loss of control of vehicle at speed.

26 Power Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 06/04/2019

The power steering failed as I was starting to turn. I was letting off the brake and barely pressing the gas pedal and as I started to turn the wheel, a warning message popped up stating that the power steering assist had failed. I could still turn the wheel (with quite a bit of effort) , so I completed my turn very slowly and moved off to the side of the road. I turned the car off and on again and the power steering worked again. After that, the power steering failed 5 times while I was backing up. Each time I turned on the car, put it in reverse, then as I would let off the brake and just touch the gas pedal and start to turn, the steering wheel would seize up and the power steering assist failure notice would pop up. Turning the car off and on again would correct the problem. Brought it into the Ford dealership and this is not covered under warranty or recall.

31 Power Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 05/19/2019

Power steering failed and reverted to manual steering while operating the vehicle on a city street. "power steering fault" message displayed in the instrument cluster center. I was able to drive to vehicle to a safe location, although it was quite difficult. If my wife had been operating the vehicle under the these same circumstances, it would have been extremely hard for her to maneuver the vehicle, which could have resulted in accident. Also, we have small children that could have also been on-board which makes this issue all the more concerning, since this vehicle is mainly used to transport children to and from school. After driving to a parking lot, I turned the vehicle off and then back on. The power steering re-engaged and I was able to drive home safely without any further issues. I immediately called the local Ford dealership and scheduled a service appointment. The dealer scanned the power steering control module for codes and found a diagnostic trouble code that requires replacement of the steering gear. Total cost for parts and labor was $2,000. The vehicle was repaired and we have not experienced any other issues with the power steering. It should also be noted that the vehicle was purchased new from the dealership and currently has approximately 74,500 miles. I was informed by Ford customer service that my VIN number wasn't part of any recall and there were no other programs available to assist me with the cost of the repair. Per my online research, there is a recall on this issue for the year of my vehicle, but it appears my build date is outside of the recall. This is not acceptable. It makes no sense why certain vehicles are excluded, when the issue has clearly been identified and addressed in other vehicles built in the same year. I am requesting that the NHTSA investigate the issue described above and issue additional recalls.
