36 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem of the 2014 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 02/07/2025

After recall 24s37 was performed on my Ford F-150 to address potential sudden downshifting to first gear, my truck began experiencing serious transmission issues that had never occurred prior. The recall required pcm reprogramming, and immediately afterward, the vehicle started hard shifting and unexpectedly downshifting at highway speeds (one example 5th to 3rd gear and also while passing or decelerating). This was alarming and unsafe. Before this recall, the transmission operated perfectly with no symptoms, warning lights, or signs of malfunction. I returned the truck to the Ford dealership that performed the recall. Their road test confirmed the issue, and they diagnosed it as damage to the overdrive clutch. However, they stated the damage was “likely present before” the recall work—despite no prior symptoms—and recommended full transmission replacement at a cost of nearly $10,000, which I declined. The issue clearly began immediately after Ford’s recall remedy and fits the exact risk the recall was supposed to prevent. The vehicle is available for inspection. I believe the recall work either caused or triggered the failure and that Ford should be held accountable.

37 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem of the 2018 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 02/06/2025

Background: I’ve had my f150 for 7 years. For 6. X years though, the truck was operating with improper software in the powertrain control module (pcm) that managed the emissions system’s control and monitoring. This is according to the Ford recall notice in Feb 2025 (2e14) stating the above. To address the recall, a Ford technician came to my house, performed the software recall update, and immediately afterwards, my check engine light came on. Days later, back at the Ford dealer, they charged me a $200 diagnostic fee, and concluded my catalytic converter was bad and needed replacement. And the $2000 repair would be my responsibility since my mileage was (now) over the emissions warranty limit. My question to them was: “when did the catalytic converter fail”? dealer answer: not sure. The old/incorrect software couldn’t detect when it went bad. My comment: so the converter may have failed in year 1 ,2, 3, 4 or 5 (still in warranty term) and just not flagged it back then? dealer answer: it’s possible, no way to know for sure. Point there’s a good chance the part actually ‘failed’ during the warranty period. How can Ford logically assign responsibility to me when the software was ‘incorrect’ for 6 years?? I don't like driving a truck that's polluting more due to a failed catalytic converter, but the dealer wasn’t able to explain why it failed after the warranty period. I feel that Ford should replace the converter at their cost since the point of failure was most likely during warranty, but never triggered due to the defective/recalled software that the truck had for it's entire life. There are online people saying similar. Got the recall done, then was told they needed a $2000 repair to the converter. I suppose many will just continue to drive with the non functioning catalytic converter.

38 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem of the 2014 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 01/31/2025

Received safety recall notice 24s37/ NHTSA recall 24v444 for my 2014 f150. Recall appears to address a safety issue resulting in the pickup downshifting into 1st gear while driving. My pickup was doing this back in 2022. It sat at the dealer for 3 months because it was too dangerous to drive (or sell) and needed a new lead frame to correct the problem, but Ford was unable to supply this part. I ultimately had to take it to a transmission shop, where they installed an after market lead frame that fixed the problem at that time (for around $1200). At that time there was a recall for 2015 models and up, but not 2014 models. Recently my pickup began going into safe or limp mode while I was driving, with a big wrench icon appearing on the dash. My mechanic said the engine code indicated the transmission was not communicating with the engine, and that it appeared to be related to this recent recall. Dealership updated the pcm, but this did not fix the problem. Ultimately, had to get a new lead frame installed ($1400). Error codes p0721 and p0722 were found, which would seem to apply to the recall. Supposedly the dealership was told that the truck was too old (2014) and and the mileage was too high (102,000) to cover the repair (although, this is a fairly recent recall). Ford customer service told me that the recall only covered the update, not any repairs to fix the underlying problem. Ford will not reimburse me for any of these repairs, but they appear to be related to exactly what the recall was for. Curious what the NHTSA's opinion is. I believe that I put in a complaint with NHTSA for this issue when it first happened. Thanks for your time.

39 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem of the 2014 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 01/25/2025

Ford motor company issued a recall for my truck (the transmission could suddenly shift into neutral), stating that they needed to update the pcm, and my local dealership service center said they could send an employee out to fix it remotely. I had not experienced the shifting into neutral prior to the "fix". Less than a week later, as I was driving around 35mph, the speedometer dropped to 0 and the transmission stuck in 3rd gear. I waited until the next stop sign and turned off the engine and started it again and it went back to normal. The next day the same issue occurred. The speedometer would drop to 0 and the transmission would stick in whichever gear it was last in. This time is was 5th gear on a highway. I had to pull over and restart it 3 times before it resumed normal driving. I went back to the dealership and they said the electronic update wouldn't have caused the oss to malfunction and that it was a coincidence that the exact issue I was having was the same as the cause and reason for the recall. I went to an independent transmission mechanic to have the oss replaced and it has now been over a month and the problem has not returned. I don't know if the cause of the oss malfunctioning was a coincidence or if it was related to a faulty electronic update (like if the Ford mechanic didn't disconnect the battery or overloaded an electric charge when he updated the pcm). The warning sign of a wrench did appear each time the oss would drop to 0. The check engine light went on the first time but not after that.

41 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem of the 2013 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 01/01/2025

The faulty output shaft speed sensor (oss) causes a signal loss between the sensor and the powertrain control module (pcm), leading to a sudden downshift into first gear, regardless of the vehicle's speed. This sudden downshift can cause the rear tires to slide, potentially leading to a loss of control and an increased risk of a crash. There is already a recall for the 2014 models and my 2013 is having the exact same issue.

42 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem of the 2013 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 12/25/2024

The contact owns a 2013 Ford F-150. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the transmission unexpectedly downshifted and the malfunction warning light illuminated. The transmission downshifted to first gear and the contact lost control of the vehicle. In addition, the accelerator pedal was depressed; however, the transmission failed to shift out of first gear. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed with a pcm software failure and molded lead frame failure. The contact was informed that the pcm software needed to be updated, and the molded lead frame needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was filed. The contact was informed that in June 2019 the vehicle was repaired under NHTSA campaign number: 19v075000 (power train). In addition, the contact stated that the software update was performed again two weeks prior, and the contact had to pay out-of-pocket for the repair. The contact referenced a recall for the lead frame; however, the warranty for the recall had expired in 2019. The contact stated that the vehicle was inoperable. The contact was advised to contact the NHTSA hotline to report the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 87, 866.

43 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem of the 2021 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 11/27/2024

I just want to provide support for others that have this safety issue, as my 2021 f150 powerboost also has this issue. When making a turn, usually a righthand turn, onto a busy road, the vehicle will fail to accelerate. The delay is not turbo lag, but more so a dead space or lag of any response from the power train. I have found that if I disable the advance trac and traction control, the issue is no longer present. Just wanted to reinforce the confidence at the start and how dangerous it is. You get this false sense of security that the truck is going to accelerate a certain way, then falls flat at a very risky time. Fyi, I am running the latest pcm code and modules updates available from Ford, via fdrs. . Read more...

45 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem of the 2020 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 10/12/2024

On [xxx] while attempting to take a trip to wv we were traveling on [xxx] nearing waynesboro, va. While driving up the mountain on [xxx] near the rockfish gap overlook I noticed our F-150 seemed to mis-shift or slip. As we’d experienced issues during a previous trip that required the transmission to be serviced under warranty I switched the display to the transmission temperature near 245 degrees. I attempted to put the truck in eco mode and slowed below the speed limit to the top of the mountain. While going down the west side of the mountain I left the truck in cruise. Past the [xxx] exit I noticed smoke which began to increase. I then checked the temperature again which reported 267 degrees. The wrench warning light came on indicating reduced power. I also received the notification on the Fordpass application. The truck quickly slowed down and would not accelerate forcing me to hastily move to the shoulder in heavy traffic. We pulled over at stopped right in front of mile marker [xxx]. A large amount of transmission fluid observed pouring out from above the bell housing onto the exhaust. It appeared and smelled like it was possible to catch on fire so I did not park over grass, remaining on the concrete shoulder. After a dealer tech simply reset the computer and stated it was fine we drove the truck home, but did not feel safe or sure that it would make the trip. The transmission temperature remained below 220 the trip home but did have delayed shifts. The next day I had three incidents after exiting the interstate of a failure to find a gear for a moment as I attempted to take a turn. Our dealer that we trust has already completed two TSB actions related to the transmission. The other dealer cleared the computer and did nothing to repair the issue. They also attempted to charge me for a diagnostic fee, even though it’s under warranty and clearly had issues to include gear ratios being wrong and ecm/pcm and bcm communication failures. 46 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem of the 2016 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 10/05/2024

My truck will suddenly downshift when driving at highway speeds to a lower gear, causing the rear end to lock-up. Same issue that Ford is addressing with the 2014 F-150's with recall 24s37, where they are replacing sensors & reprogramming the pcm. This is going to cause an accident and potential loss of life if this is not fixed by Ford. The recall that was issued should have included many other model years. My truck only has 60k miles on it and have heard of many issues around the same mileage on other years.

Additionally, the rear wheels locked up. The contact was able to pull to the side of the road and parked the vehicle. The contact was able to resume driving; however, the failure recurred several times while driving. The power train warning light was illuminated, and the message "transmission failure - see dealer" was displayed. The contact stated that the vehicle had failed to respond upon shifting in reverse(r). The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where the tcm was rebooted; however, the failure increased. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the transmission had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact related the failure to NHTSA action number: pe25002(power train). The manufacturer was notified of the failure and advised the contact that only a third of the repair fee would be covered; however, the manufacturer later denied any assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 62,000.

49 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem of the 2011 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 08/16/2024

A recall was issued for an intermittent failure of the transmission speed sensor (oss), campaign 16s19. I took the truck to a Ford dealership, mike reichenbach Ford, in florence SC. The technician reprogrammed the pcm. This did not resolve the issue and the truck continues to downshift or not shift at all. I spoke with the dealership and with the Ford motor company. I believe this truck was taken to a dealership more than once without the issue being resolved. I am respectfully request Ford make good on the safety recall of a known issue.

53 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem of the 2014 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 07/02/2024

My 2014 f150 XLT experienced recall s4s37. I brought the truck in for the recall after experience a sudden downshift into 1st gear while driving at 70mph. The pcm software update was installed during my first visit to my local Ford dealership (team fod in steubenville, OH). The issue occurred once more after the pcm update and team Ford dismissed me after they could not replicate the issue. The sudden downshift happened twice more and I was again dismissed as team Ford could not replicate the issue. After the downshift had occurred 4-6x, team Ford reached out to Ford support at my request to resolve the issue. They informed me I should consider replacing the lead frame. With the ongoing recall issues of the 2011-2013 f150s (which included a lead frame replacement as part of the recall), this should have been recommended at my first appointment. The sudden downshift continued over the course of 6-8months prior to team Ford recommending I replace the lead frame which then led to my transmission blowing. 1. The lead frame should be included as part of recall s4s37. 2. My transmission should be covered by Ford as the ongoing sudden downshift while team Ford failed to inform me of the correct fix inevitably resulted int he gradual deterioration of my transmission. For reference, my vehicle has 65,000miles. Ford knows the lead frame was the fix for the 2011-2013 models and cheaped out on 2014 (and potentially other years) due to the quantity of vehicles that experienced this recall.

54 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem of the 2018 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 06/28/2024

The 10 speed transmission left the factory as a failure waiting to happen. It will up shit and down shift numerous/many gears without notice. At 45 mph will downshift to 1st gear without any warning, going around turns, in the rain and snow it will make for a hand full to drive. I have taken up numerous lanes to trying to keep from crashing and hurting anyone. To keep from overrevving the engine and kicking the rods out of it, one must immediately slam on the brakes. It will hold numerous gears at once, when this happens the trans fights itself internally and 100 % of forward motion is lost. Not fun when making a left turn getting up to speed. It will also slam into gears when up shifting and downshifting, it will startle you and you will have to stop accelerating to let it hunt for a single gear ( hopefully not first ). Ford suggests resetting the tcm and ecm and removing any codes. New this wouldn't help but what did I have to loose. No better after the relearn. (I'm an ase master tech ) worked on them and built them for the past 45 years.

60 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem of the 2018 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 03/25/2024

Transmission misses gears, causes truck to rev and then bang into gear. Accelerating onto highways or to pass the vehicle alternately loses power or over revs then the truck jerks around and slams into gear. Accelerating to enter a highway is dangerous because you cant be sure it will continue to accelerate, avoiding other cars is not always possible when the transmission is slipping. We have had it to a shop, we have had the tcm reprogrammed, we have had the transmission valve body replaced, nothing makes it better. There is a light that looks like a wrench that eventually came on after a few weeks of the above. Then the light randomly went off and the transmission acted ok for about 2 weeks, then it came back on and its worse than ever now.

61 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem of the 2013 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 02/21/2024

My 2013 f150 downshifted abruptly from 5th to 1st gear going 55. This caused me to stop dangerously and abruptly. It then got stuck in 1st gear. I turned off truck and restarted and it was stuck in 3rd gear. I did have a check engine light read which were codes: p0720/p0721/p0720 pointing to the output shaft speed sensor. I had Ford dealership TSB performed in 2020 to reprogram pcm to prevent this from happening, wrench icon showed a long with airbag light and dashboard quit working all except rpm gauge. The first time this abrupt downshift occurred was today February 21, 2024. Seems like a very dangerous safety issue and the dealership has no regards to it and said they are booked out and it would be $150 to look into it.

64 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem of the 2013 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 11/22/2023

My truck will downshift on its own, I. E. , I’m doing 65 mph on the highway in 6th gear and it will suddenly downshift to 1st, 2nd or 3rd gear, causing my back tires to spin out, I almost lose control of the truck and I lose speed quickly when other vehicles all around me are still doing 65 mph or more. The truck has also failed to shift out of first gear at all, the speedometer needle does not move at all and the truck will not shift up when I’m trying to accelerate. This is a danger to me and to all drivers around me. Ford is aware of this problem, the issue is a faulty lead frame assembly and it needs to be replaced. They issued a recall that called for a pcm reprogramming - a reprogramming of the pcm module was supposedly going to fix the issue with a faulty lead frame assembly! crazy, it clearly did not as I had the pcm reprogrammed and the truck is still acting crazy due to the faulty lead frame assembly that Ford refuses to replace at their expense. It’s a $200 part!!.
