Ford F-150 owners have reported 40 problems related to brake drum wheel cylinder (under the service brakes category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Ford F-150 based on all problems reported for the F-150.
There was a recall for the master brake cylinder and I brought the truck in to have the recall work done in October of 2020. The brake fluid low light is coming back on.

Tl- the contact owns a 2017 Ford F-150. The contact stated that brake pedal had hardened without warning which had made it difficult to depress the brake pedal when traveling at various speeds. The contact had taken the vehicle to tindol Ford(1901 e franklin blvd, gastonia, nc 28054) where an inspection was performed on the vehicle however the dealer found no fault with his brakes or brake cylinder. Upon investigation, the contact linked his failure to NHTSA campaign number: 20v332000 (service brakes, hydraulic); however, his vehicle was not included in the recall. The manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 27,000.

Brake pedal went all the way to the floor when depressed. Brakes did not engage. Low brake fluid alarm sounded. Upon slowing to a stop, the brake fluid reservoir was depleted but no fluid was evident on the ground. The brake fluid was replaced to specifications but was depleted again within a short period of time and brakes were not restored. Auto technician discovered master brake cylinder was leaking internally and brake booster was damaged. No previous issues with braking system were ever observed and driving conditions did not put excess wear on braking system. This issue is identical to issues described in Ford recall 20s31.
Ford has a known issue with the master brake cylinder failing in these trucks. Mine has clearly failed due to this issue, and my entire family was nearly killed on the interstate as a result. I took the truck to the dealership and they agree that this is the same master brake cylinder issue that Ford has acknowledged as a known issue. But magically my truck is not included as part of the recall even though its a 2016 Ford F-150 3. 5 ecoboost built in kansas city. All the parameters for the recall seem to match my vehicle precisely but yet somehow it magically is not included in the recall. Ford refuses to take accountability for this major safety issue and now I am out $500 out of my own pocket because Ford refuses to step up and take care of this known safety hazard for me. Ford should be ashamed of themselves and with how many new complaints I see filed here weekly for this same issue the NHTSA should also step up and force Ford to expand the recall because clearly not all affected vehicles have been recalled at this point. I cannot say it enough, this is a major safety concern. Me and my entire family were nearly killed as a result of this issue. It is appalling to me that Ford and the nhsta have not done more to rectify this very dangerous and deadly problem. Next steps I see in the near future is a class action lawsuit against Ford for ignoring this well known issue. This should have never happened and Ford should take accountability for this problem but they are refusing because it isn't part of the "recall". Shame on you Ford!.
We received safety recall notice 20s31/NHTSA recall 20v-332 on our 2015 Ford F-150. Neither the dealer nor Ford customer service is willing to replace our master brake cylinder under the recall until it actually fails, or we see the red brake warning signal etc. Considering we use the truck to pull our 6,000 lb. 25ft. Airstream we don't feel it is a safe situation to take the chance of pulling the airstream and just waiting to see if the brake fails. We may be hours from a Ford dealership when it happens. I am very disappointed with Ford for their seeming indifference & willingness to just wait until people crash into other cars and do bodily harm before they will take responsibility of fixing an obvious safety recall issue. Never before have we ever had a recall notice where we had first to prove our vehicle had failed before they fixed the recall issue. Everyone kept telling me that only a small percentage of the vehicles that received the safety recall notice would actually have the brakes fail, so why worry? just keep driving & hope for the best? the letter says it's due to a part shortage & we'd be notified when parts are available, but the dealer & an Ford operations supervisor said the master brake cylinder would not be fixed on our vehicle unless the vehicle was exhibiting symptoms, regardless of the safety recall. I've wasted a week of my life talking to Ford, and waiting for call backs & basically am just being blown off. . And we're talking about brake failures!! this was our 3rd Ford vehicle over the years, but likely our last. Not impressed at all with their customer service or their concern about their customers safety once they've purchased the vehicle.

I was driving on the interstate and the brake fluid level indicator light came on. I was able to stop safely and check the fluid. The master brake cylinder was close to empty. I had just had my vehicle serviced so this was odd. Upon attempting to drive again I found that I had no brake power.

While coming to stop my brakes failed and went to the floor. On exit 32 eastbound I-90. Thank god there were no other cars in front of me. After looking online there is a recall for 2013 -2014 Ford 150 that were manufactured at the same plant as my truck. In our research it takes the same master brake cylinder as the recalled trucks. Our truck only has 78,000 miles on it.

While stopped, with my foot on the brake, in a parking lot waiting for traffic to clear so I could enter the street there was a rather loud pop such as a bloon bursting. The brake peddle became extremely ridged and the vehicle began moving forward. It nearly caused me to crash into the cars ahead of me. I have been a vehicle service technician for near 45 years so I was keenly aware of what had happened. I pushed the brake peddle with both my feet and managed to stop it. I contacted the Ford dealership said they couldn't repair my vehicle because of its manufacture date. I removed the defective part and it was just as the recall on the master brake cylinder stated. The problem effects more 2013 vehicles than is covered by the recall. I have attached a photo showing the brake fluid in my failed brake booster as proof.
While driving on a us highway at 65 mph, I had a need to suddenly apply the brakes on my 2016 Ford F-150 and there was a sudden failure. The brake pedal had to be depressed the entire distance to the floor to finally get the vehicle to decelerate. Afterwards a warnings light came on indicating low brake fluid. Despite adding fluid to the reservoir the brakes would still not engage. The vehicle had to be brought for service where it was determined that there had been a failure in the master brake cylinder. Fortunately this did not result in an accident or injury.
Driving from California to oregon through nevada on interstate when vehicle started to overheat nevada dealer would not even look at the vehicle. Informed Ford motor company. Continued to oregon and then on to bozeman montana. Vehicle is now at bozeman Ford having the motor dismantled for diagnosis. Was told there is a issue with the number one cylinder, Ford corporation has not been of any help what so ever.
Master brake cylinder failure. Brakes failed and had to run through a stop light. Same failure as Ford recall 16s24.

Tl the contact owns a 2016 Ford F-150. While the vehicle was being serviced by antelope valley Ford (located at 1155 auto mall dr, lancaster, CA 93534, (888) 415-0959), the contact was informed that the brake booster, brake cylinder, and bushings needed to be replaced. The failure of the brake components rendered the brakes inoperable. In addition, the brake pedal extended to the floorboard. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 50,178.
Sudden brake failure after a brake fluid low level caution. This happened after approximately 5 minutes while on the highway at 65 mph. Luckily I didn't crash into anything and was able to stop with remaining brake pressure. The dealership said it was caused by a failed master brake cylinder and caused the brake pump to fail. Total repair cist $975. This is totally unacceptable on this vehicle. Luckily I didn't crash.
I was driving on a city road going 40mph. I went to hit the brakes at a stoplight and the pedal went to the floor. It ended up being the master brake cylinder was leaking into the brake booster.
While driving our Ford f 150 we experienced total brake loss where the peddle went to the floor with no stopping. When brake fluid was checked the was none, nor was there a leak or any sign of a leak. The f 150 was taken to a local mechanic and he could not see any sign of a leak. He added brake fluid and it was disappearing about as fast as he was putting it in. The vehicle was taken to a second mechanic which was ultimately the same outcome, added fluid, fluid drained, no leak and still no brakes. The vehicle was then taken to the Ford dealership where he told us that the master brake cylinder was leaking into the brake booster and our truck was not covered under the recall. Our truck is a 2013 vehicle that was manufactured at the dearborn plant in michigan. I still have the sticker from the truck when we bought it brand new. This vehicle is currently at the dealership genesee valley Ford in avon, NY. No work has been done to the vehicle currently. The mechanic shops that looked and witnessed the vehicle after the brakes went out are beeches automotive in leicester, NY and al's automotive in leicester, NY. The current cost to fix this is north of $400 and the dealership is ordering parts for it now. I should not have to pay for this since it is the same reason that Ford had to recall the others. My name is scott chest and I am the son of the owner of the vehicle. My mother melody chest is the owner and the driver. I am handeling this incident for her.
I was slowing down as I approached a red light at an intersection. The vehicle was slowing down fine but when I tried to come to a complete halt the brake pedal suddenly felt soft or loose and easily hit the floor but vehicle did not stop and kept rolling forward slowly. I pumped the brakes but the brake pedal just felt soft and easily hit the floor. I managed to steer to avoid a pedestrian and then jammed transmission into park and this stopped vehicle. Road condition was slightly wet but clear. The vehicle was traveling slowly at the time of the incident. I then shut off and restarted engine. Then I tested the brakes again and they worked fine. Took vehicle to local Ford dealership to get checked out. The dealership could not find a specific cause for this brake failure, no sign of brake oil leak. Dealership recommended replacing master brake cylinder. There is a recall for this exact same model, but only for those trucks built in August 2013. My truck was built in kansas city February 2013, so I had to pay for cost of work.
Master brake cylinder went out at 6,267 miles- brake pedal went to floor while at intersection- was able to pump up - had to pump up every time vehicle was shut off and failed once after pumping up at traffic light.
While driving on rural maryland road, complete loss of brakes without warning other than "low brake fluid" warning less than two minutes beforehand. No accident, fortunately. I understand that this is a known issue and that Ford has not issued a recall for this extremely dangerous defect. Dealer has said that it will rebuild master brake cylinder and brake booster, using manufacturer original equipment but cannot state reason or cause for failure, nor provide any assurance that failure will not recur. Please compel a recall, if that is within NHTSA power.
On 08/07/2017 while traveling approximately 55 miles per hour on highway 281 in san antonio, TX my 2017 Ford F-150, v8 super crew, 4x4 ftx experienced complete brake failure. My brakes went to the floor with no brake activation and I had to swerve to the left two lanes to avoid impacting the vehicles in front of me. Once on the shoulder I had to pump the brakes in order to stop after travelling several hundred yards. There was absolutely no warning (noise, service lights, etc. ) prior to, during or after the brake failure. The vehicle was only four months old with 6400 miles on it. If there was no shoulder or clear lanes it would have caused a severe accident likely resulting in injuries. I was able to slowly and carefully make my way to the dealership on side roads but experienced total brake failure three additional times. The first time was while I was stationary at a stop sign facing slightly downhill my brake pedal went completely to the floor and I had to pump it several times to make the vehicle stop again. The other two times I was traveling approximately 25 miles per hour and missed my turn (right) and proceeded past the turn approximately 50 yards and had to pump the brakes in order to stop. The dealership had to remove and replace the master brake cylinder. They indicated it was leaking internally and gave no explanation why a service light or other warning did not come on and there is no current recall for that part.
Brakes went completely out while driving on a major highway, had to use emergency brake to finally stop truck. Found out there is a recall for 2013-2014 Ford F-150 for this problem, however, Ford did take a report today, but, they said this truck was not under the recall because it was made on 9-19-2012 and the ones under the recall #16v345000 were built in 2013. Funny that this is the exact problem yet not considered part of this recall. The repair involved replacing the master brake cylinder and the brake booster which cost $1193. 25. We were lucky no one was injured or worse. Just hope they do a very good investigation and hope this does not happen to anyone else who's vehicle was built in 2012. The other note is, the oil did not leak out onto the ground, so no visible problem was seen, the oil went into the booster. I truly believe that this vehicle should be covered under recall # 16v345000. - sharon h. , homosassa, us.
While driving down the highway, the vehicle flashed service advance trac, down hill descent control fault, trailer brake module fail and a couple more codes. All electonics in vehicle went blank, including all controls/gauges. Before doing so, last code read, shift to park. Almost caused me to have an accident, because the power steering went out and nearly pulled me into another vehicle. The acceleration is bad too, feels like it is not firing all cylinders again. Have already taken in for a number of issues, including crankshaft sensor issues(was losing power to driveline); brakes locking up (have replaced the rotors and pads six times and last time I replaced both calibers as well; power steering has been replaced once before, front axles and bearings replaced. As well as, ac problems. When the first issues arose, I was told by service tech at dealership I needed a new engine, (later he completely denied telling me this) instead they fixed some things and gave it back to me. Problems have continued since, like I said have taken it in at least 6 times to a dealer and once to an independent mechanic. At first the problems were covered by warrenty, now they are not, there is only 78,000miles on the truck and has been in shop at least 6 times and is only 4 yrs old. Not sure what to do, as the problems resemble recall issues, but dealership says they aren't part of any recalls. Concerned for my safety on the road.
My 2 month old Ford F-150 lost all brakes while coming back from a trip this past Sunday. The truck is at moyer Ford in foley al. There telling me that they can not repair it until mid February. I have filed a complaint with Ford case # cas10736186. I use my truck for work and can not be without a truck until late February. I am getting no responds on fixing the problem from Ford , moyer Ford were the truck is or world Ford of pensacola were I purchased the vehicle. Very disturbing that Ford knew the master brake cylinder was inferior when they built the vehicle. People are going to lose there life and kill others with this problem. This is criminal and Ford should be held accountable.
Driving in parking lot and it took longer than expected to stop. Then driving on road at 35-40 and went to stop as light turned yellow. Brake pedal went all the way to the floor. Went immediately to local Ford dealer (1/4 mile from the incident). Dealer says master brake cylinder failed and it will take 4-5 days for replacement part to come in.
Loss of brake control due to master brake cylinder failure while vehicle in motion. Occurred immediately after brake system warning alert on dashboard. Brake pedal went to floorboard without any brake control. Checked brake fluid reservoir immediately after safety parking and it was empty. This event appears connected to the Ford f150 model year 13-14 with 3. 5l ecoboost engine master brake cylinder issue.
While at a red light on hyw 59 with my foot on the brake pedal it suddenly went soft and depressed completely to the floor. I proceeded to a truck service shop where a mechanic did a quick look and found no leaks, I then made an apt at a Ford dealer in canada where they discovered that the master brake cylinder had an internal fault and was replaced at a cost of 992. 53 to myself.
Master brake cylinder failed, allowing brake fluid to enter brake booster, resulting in brake failure. Brake warning lamp illuminated, was still able to stop vehicle, but brake pedal went all the way to the floorboard.
I went to operate the vehicle today and brake pedal went all the way to the floor. A warning came on that brake fluid was low. I opened the hood and there was no fluid in the reservoir. I filled it up and started driving. Within two minutes the warning came on again. I again opened the hood and the reservoir was empty. There is no sign of a leak under the truck. Once again I filled it up and within a minute or two the low fluid message came on again and the pedal would go to the floor. I continued to drive it to the local Ford dealer very slowly, using the e-brake and gearing to stop as needed. Dealer could find no sign of a leak and thinks it may be the fluid bypassing the master brake cylinder and collecting in the brake booster. This is a very dangerous condition and I see I am not the only 2014 F-150 with defective brakes. This is a 5000 pound plus vehicle, one would expect it to have a very reliable braking system. . When entering vehicle to leave Ford vehicle was parked I went to turn on the ignition master brake cylinder reservoir low waring light on display illuminated, low brake fluid on displayed. Filled the reservoir to minimum , drove for 10 minutes on city streets low brake warning again . Ford looked at it and found brake booster filling up with fluid, ordered part. Vacuum hose may be the unknown cause. Ford replaced pcv valve earlier in the month due to gas oder in oil.
Brake cylinder failure; took two weeks for repair at Ford dealer.
The contact owns a 2014 Ford F-150. While driving at an unknown speed, the brake pedal was depressed and failed to respond. The brake fluid warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer, who diagnosed that the master and boost cylinders needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 14,000.
When backing out of driveway at approx. 5mph, the power brakes become spongy and can be pushed all the way to the floor. The vehicle fails to stop and the brakes must be pumped several times before they work. This only occurs at initial startup (first use of the brakes) that day. This happens almost daily during warm/hot weather months. The problem has existed since the vehicle was purchased and I have taken it to the dealership 2-3 times regarding this issue. However, they could not duplicate problem or determine the cause. It's been happening for the past 3-4 years and it's only a matter of time before I don't stop in time and backup into my neighbors car across the street. I have the 2012 Ford f150 w/ eco boost six-cylinder engine and find similar complaints on the internet regarding this truck. A recall for similar brake problems was issued on 2013-2014 year models but not 2012. My truck is not used daily and has about 30,000 miles on it.
While attempting to remove corrosion locked rear wheels (rims locked to hubs) for balancing and rotating, while vehicle was supported on hydraulic lift, the main rear brake line failed. Vehicle was operated in south central NY state for 10 years. Vehicle has been mechanically inoperative since that time, though numerous new parts have been installed. The visibly corroded brake line failed during attempts to "coax" the corrosion locked rims from the wheels by applying lateral (90 degree) pressure to the sides of the pickup's bed, while the tires were in contact with the garage floor but with the vehicle still supported by the lift. Point of failure was just in front and above the rear axle. This was vehicle's 2nd brake line in less than one year, the first having occurred on the right front brake line just behind the caliper/wheel cylinder.

Please see odi#10278394. Complaint continued. Truck taken to garage to be fixed in January 09 because of vibration in steering from brakes. Oct, guarantee run out, and brakes still not fixed. Vibration continued. Ordered new performance rotors and pads. Upon installation of these items I inspected calipers and found cracks and chips in cylinder plungers which connect to push the pads. I would say this came from constant vibration of the front brakes which Ford did not fix for eight months. The center plunger of these caliper pistons are made of a fiber board which will not stand up to vibration, fiber board is a very hard and brittle material which is good for heat and wear but not vibration. Calibers have to be replaced. Of course at my expense. Truck is undriveable and this condition can cause a very serious accident and death if breakdown of this fiber board type material should fail without notice. You would completely lose your control and brakes.
