2 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2010 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 10/06/2021

On October 5, 2021 (Wednesday) I was driving my 2010 F-150 lariat and noticed the brakes fading as I came to brake for red lights. I also noticed “brake warning” lights & “brake fluid level low” light come on also. I pulled into a cvs store and looked under the hood to & saw the “master cylinder brake fluid reservoir” nearly empty. I put 1 bottle of dot 3 brake fluid in fluid container and saw level go back down, almost empty, upon turning truck on to pressurize the system. I didn’t see any fluid leaking from under truck & bought another bottle of dot3 brake fluid and again the reservoir emptied again. I got the vehicle home and the next day the same thing happened after a 3rd refill of the reservoir. Again still not seeing any fluid leaks on my driveway!!! I disconnected a vacuum tube at top of “brake booster” which is connected to the “master cylinder” and looked inside to see large amount of brake fluid in the “brake booster housing”!!! I saw where 2014 to 2017 Ford F-150’s have been recalled for this exact same safety issue! I will contact my dealership for immediate repair tomorrow, October 7, 2021. . Read more...

6 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2013 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 10/01/2020

Brake fluid leaked from the brake mastercylinder into the brake power booster. Once the brake fluid level in the mastercylinder reached a high enough level, brake fluid was sucked through the vacuum lines into the intake and into the engine, where presumably it filled up the cylinders. This occurred both while in motion and stationary, I suspect it only occurred while the engine was running and a vacuum was on the vacuum lines.

7 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2016 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 09/12/2020

I experienced complete brake failure in my truck. The failure occured while the truck was stationary. I drove at low speeds in a residential area the night prior and did not notice any diminished braking function. The next morning, I started the truck and observed the brake fluid warning light and no resistance in the brake pedal. Upon further inspection, there were no visible leaks from any of the brake lines but the brake fluid resevoir was empty. The diagnosis was a failure of the master brake cylinder, via leaking all brake fluid into the brake booster. This failure is consistent with the 20s31 recall, but my VIN was not reported as being effeted by this recall. I am concerned that there may be more vehicles out there that are effected by this faulty part. My vehicle was repaired by a Ford dealer, and we opened a incident report with Ford but they declined any responsiblity for this failure.

8 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2016 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 09/08/2020

On 9/6/2020, while driving approx 60mph on hwy 128 between jal and carlsbad nm, the brake pedal on my 2016 Ford f150 lariat went to the floor and I had no brakes. A message on my dash came up saying to add brake fluid and I did. I took my truck to the nearest dealership, carslbad Ford Lincoln. The master cylinder and booster had a recall and was replaced, but the brake fluid that leaked into the engine was never addressed by the service and repair center. As a result, I now have over $6,000 worth of collateral damage to my engine that the dealership is refusing to fix because I'm being blamed for the damages for adding brake fluid to the resevoir. It's beyond obvious that the only way any brake fluid leaked into the engine was due to the damaged manufacturer part(s), the master cylinder and the booster, that were not only damaged but in recall status - recall# 20s31. The gm and service manager of the carslbad Ford Lincoln dealership have the power, the support and backing of a behemoth. They have the full support of the great american auto giant Ford motor company and I have 100% nothing and nobody! there has to be some law or some thing to protect your everyday innocent tax paying american citizen from being taken advantage of by people who work for these powerful entites and/or companies. I'm writing this complaint on 9/27 and they've had my truck since 9/12; just over two weeks. I'm issuing this complaint because I literally cannot pay for the $6,212 worth of repairs that Ford motor CO is accountable and responsible for. Also, with (2) blown turbo chargers, tube asy, converter asy, sensors etc which all need to be replaced; my truck is not safe for me to drive and other citizens communting with or without their families on american highways shouldn't be subjected to this unsafe vehicle being on the road.

9 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2014 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 08/25/2020

The drivers side front started leaking brake fluid. Before I saw that I was parked, started up the vehicle and stepped on the brake pedal to shift into reverse. The brake pedal felt loose and went all the way to the floor. I then examined the exterior, where I saw the leaking. To me this fits the recall for the brakes/cylinder, but my vehicle does not fall within the correct date of manufactoring. It is a 2014 Ford F-150 with the 3. 5 ecoboost it has barely 80k miles. I have never had a brake issue on a vehicle before especially one under 100k. I think they need to expand the recall. I would be willing to offer up my broken parts for them to look at. I was lucky the vehicle was parked and I was Smart enough to get out and look as I noticed something was wrong.

11 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2015 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 08/24/2020

As I was driving on interstate 94, in minnesota, I applied my brakes to slow my vehicle down for a construction zone. In doing so, a warning on my dashboard appeared saying, "brake fluid low". At that time, my brake pedal went right to the floor, drastically effecting my stopping ability. My emergency brake was needed to stop my vehicle. As I tried to figure out where the brake fluid was going, I was unable to find a leak. With more research, I found out there was a recall for the brake master cylinder leaking fluid into the brake booster, making the front brakes entirely inoperable. I have been attempting to get my vehicle fixed, and or replaced without any luck.

12 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2016 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 08/22/2020

Tl-the contact owns a 2016 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving on the highway at 70 mph the brake fluid light illuminated on the dashboard. The contact tried to brake but the pedel went to the floor. The contact was able to downshift and slow the vehicle down to pull off the highway at a gas station and retopped the brake fluid. The contact then drove a short distance home and the brake pedel went out again. The contact checked the level and discovered the fluid leaked into the brake booster with the brake cylinder fluid level completely dry. The contact called the dealer ken garff st. George Ford Lincoln 145 w hilton dr, saint george, ut 84770 (888) 925-8899. They refused to recognize the recall that was on the vehicle NHTSA number:20v332000 (service brakes, hydraulic). They said that NHTSA's information was wrong. The manufacturer stated the same. They denied the existance of the recall. The failure mileage 115,000. Tf.

13 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2014 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 08/19/2020

Nhtsa recall 16v-345 8/11/20, I encountered the defect described in the above srreport. The vehicle experienced a sudden loss of brake fluid with the resulting visual and audible alarms. I verified at that time that the reservoir in the master cylinder was empty and that the brake fluid had leaked from the reservoir. Additional brake fluid was added and the brakes were cycled to attempt to get braking performance back. 3 cups of fluid leaked from the reservoir with no visible liquid on the outside of the reservoir or anywhere else under the vehicle. There was leakage into the brake booster. Nhtsa 16v-345 states: owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to a Ford dealer to have the brake master cylinder replaced. Additionally, the brake booster will be replaced if the brake master cylinder is leaking. sr 16s24 states as to remedy: owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to a Ford dealer to have the brake master cylinder replaced additionally the brake booster will be replaced if the brake master cylinder is leaking. took the vehicle to a Ford dealer (classic Ford of columbia). After the dealer completing their evaluation, I was advised that the master cylinder had failed and needed to be replaced and that, the brake booster needed to be replaced. The brake booster was stated to be at my expense and not covered by the recall. I pointed out to the dealer that I wanted the master cylinder and the brake booster repaired under the recall. Upon delivery I inquired and was advised that the brake booster was not replaced because it did not need to be. I had been advised that it needed to be replaced when they were wanting me to pay for it. Complaint: the recall indicates that the brake booster will be replaced if the master cylinder is leaking. It was. The action is not discretionary. Ford has failed to perform what was required by the recall program.

14 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2016 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 08/18/2020

Master cylinder leaked brake fluid into the brake booster causing loss of stopping ability. This occured one morning as I arrived at work. The low brake fluid warning came on and I planned to get more fluid during my lunch break. When I attempted to leave in my vehicle for lunch I immediatley notice a total lack of braking ability and narrowly missed backing into a nearby building. I had to have my truck towed to a local shop for repair. The repair included a new master cylinder and booster. I paid $225 for the tow truck and nearly $700 for the repairs. Luckily this did not occur while driving at highway speeds and cause an accident.

15 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2013 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 08/15/2020

The brakes went out on my 2013 F-150, the master cylinder leaked brake fluid into the brake booster. I was driving and went to stop at a stop sign and the brake pedal went straight to the floor I was lucky there wasn't a vehicle in front of me or I would have hit it. I pulled into gas station and got dot 4 brake fluid and filled up the reservoir, the indicator light showed 98% full. I drove couple blocks home and went to stop and the brake pedal went straight to the floor again (I was lucky I did not go thru the garage).

16 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2017 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 08/13/2020

Loss of brake function while driving on highway. Pedal to the floor with no warning lights / chimes. Brake fluid reservoir appeared full - no external signs of leaks. Brake pedal had a mind of it's own! brakes would work, then pedal to floor, then brakes would work, then not. . . . . . . . . . Towed to dealer on 8/13/2020 8/14/2020 - dealer states brake booster failure with brake fluid leaking into brake booster. Johnson / sewell Ford in marble falls, TX. No mention of master cylinder or brake vacuum pump involvement? (ecoboost 3. 5 engine configuration) booster on back order, may be weeks to months! my build date (3/2017 at dearborn plant) is almost one year later than the build dates shown in the pending recall 20s31, but appears to be the same problem.

17 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2014 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 07/19/2020

On July 19, 2020 ~3:30p, I was traveling on CA 134 w transitioning to CA 101 n. As I applied the brakes the pedal went straight to the floor with no braking effect being initiated. Vigorously pumping the brakes resulted in virtually no braking effect. Turning the emergency flashers on, I then allowed the vehicle to coast to a stop on the shoulder of the CA 101 north and awaited for roadside assistance. There was no previous braking performance issue, annunciator warning, or alarm of any form to suggest a pending issue. Only upon the actual failure itself did a display message show up on the dash. That message read something like "brake fluid low". As I waited for roadside assistance, I took a moment to inspect the area under the vehicle looking for evidence of any dripping or leaking fluids. There was none and the vehicle was otherwise well maintained with approximately 60,000 miles on it. I contacted aaa for an emergency tow. When the aaa flatbed truck arrived, the driver, bill, asked the nature of the problem and I informed him it was a virtual 100% brake failure. After he loaded the truck onto the flat bed, he noted with surprise that the vehicle had indeed lost 100% of its brakes. Aaa towed the vehicle to their nearest service center located at 5451 tujunga Ave, north hollywood (los angeles), CA. When the there, dan, the technician/owner in charge, spoke with me after his initial inspection, he was surprised to find the vehicle had 100% brake failure with no evidence of any external leaks. He did note that the brake fluid reservoir was empty but there was no leaks. He surmised that the fluid must have leaked "internally" and thereafter indicated he would do no work on the vehicle, believing that Ford needed to analyze the failure. My 91 year old passenger and I were lucky to have not been the cause of a major highway accident.

18 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2016 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 06/28/2020

My 2016 Ford f150 3. 5l ecoboost didn't have its VIN tagged for the leaking brake master cylinder recall. Reference 20s31. My truck was built at the dearborn plant and matches every single parameter for the recall. I was driving my truck down a colorado highway at a high elevation. My brakes started softening and felt almost no pressure in the pedal. My brake fluid low warning came on my dashboard along with the brake light indicator. I was able to get to a store to purchase brake fluid. Within 5 miles of driving after filling up the tank the warnings went off again my brakes weakened. It was very terrifying with having my partner and two dogs in the car with me. I spoke to a Ford dealership and they said they won't cover these repairs. This is after I mentioned my life being in danger just trying to get to work. I had the truck inspected by a credible mechanic which told me that the issue matches the recall details perfectly. I believe now, the brake fluid has leaked from the master cylinder into the brake booster and is now leaking into the engine. An enormous amount of thick exhaust was being expelled from the truck on the second day of noticing brake failure. I believe Ford should be responsible for any danger or harm that comes to me since they have turned me away just because of my VIN not matching.

19 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2016 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 06/20/2020

Brake fluid light came on resulting in loss of brakes while driving. After seeing light I went to auto parts store to purchase brake fluid. I filled brake fluid to an almost max level to get home. While driving less than a mile home the light came back on about 1/4 mile and started losing brake function. I arrived home and added more fluid to the vehicle while parked and it immediately began to go down. There were no visible brake fluid leaks anywhere. Under further investigation a recall has been issued to trucks made at the same time with the same issues. My VIN number does not have a recall so Ford won't doing anything with this obvious manufacturer defect and obvious safety issue. The brake master cylinder leaks fluid in to the brake booster pump causing a loss of braking power. Ford recall code 20s31 and the press release was issued this month. I could have crashed into another vehicle due to this issue.

20 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2016 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 06/06/2020

I was driving on a freeway at 75 mph when the "low brake fluid" light illuminated. I immediately exited and while braking, the brake pedal went nearly all the way to the floor. The brake light also illuminated on the dash. I pulled into an auto parts store and purchased brake fluid. It took approximately 20 ounces to fill the reservoir. After filling, the warning lights went off, but the braking pedal was still not firm. Once I got to my destination, I parked the car for 3 hours and when I left, the low brake fluid light and the brake warning light came on again. I put another 12 ounces of brake fluid in the reservoir and immediately drove to the Ford dealership service department. At no time did I observe any brake fluid on the ground. Upon inspection, the dealership told me the master cylinder had failed and was leaking brake fluid into the brake booster. This was an extremely dangerous failure as there was no warning prior to the warning lights on the dash and the loss of brakes was immediate. The vehicle has 52,000 miles on it.

21 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2013 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 06/03/2020

On June 3, 2020, my son and I were in my 2013 Ford F-150 driving west on I-94. My son was driving. An alarm sounded then a message appeared on the dashboard about an issue with the brakes. I don't recall the wording. We had driven about 25 miles from home with approximately 35 miles to our destination. We continued on and I got out and my son remained in the truck for about an hour. He then got out and looked under the truck and there was no liquid under the truck. I returned to the truck and we headed home on I-696 then I-94 with no issues. The brake message on the dashboard was lit. When we exited I-94 at the marysville, michigan exit we had a complete and total brake failure. No brakes! my son stepped on the emergency brake forcefully and was able to slow the truck down enough to make the turn off the exit ramp and on to gratiot road. He ran through the stop sigh there in making the right turn on to gratiot road but thankfully no traffic was right there at the same time. We drove the additional half mile or so to our house and parked the truck. We checked the brake fluid level and it was empty. We then drove my son's car to auto zone and bought a quart of brake fluid and poured it in to the F-150. After a couple hours we checked the brake fluid level and it was empty. There was not a drop of fluid on the cement driveway under the truck! we called marysville tire and auto, inc. And drove the truck the less than half mile to their location. They put in a new master cylinder at a cost of $519. 04. I called Ford motor owner relations and made a report (case #26860820) on June 19, 2020. Research shows me that other F-150s have been recalled for replacement of a master cylinder and I want you folks to know of my experience. There has never been any fluid leaks under my truck since I purchased it in 2014. Thank you.

22 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2016 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 05/23/2020

With no prior warning symptoms, I started my truck the morning of may 23, 2020 and saw a brake alert message on the dashboard. Brake pedal went all the way to the floor. I immediately called my local Ford dealer and (carefully and slowly) drove the truck the 2 miles to the dealer. They informed me that the brake master cylinder had failed, leaking brake fluid into other parts of the braking system. They did not have replacement parts in stock, so I am now awaiting parts shipment before they can complete repairs. I feel very fortunate this happened now, as my wife and I are scheduled to leave on vacation in 10 days, pulling our 9000 lb travel trailer on an extended highway trip. Had this sudden brake failure occurred on the road while pulling an RV, we would quite likely not have lived to tell the tale.

23 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2014 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 05/17/2020

My trucks breaks went to the floor board. No breaks, I barley missed being t-boned. I had new breaks about a 2 months ago. No break fluid but no leakage on the ground. My son told me if could be the master cyclinder so I looked it up to see how much one cost and seen recalls on 2014 f150 for failure of master cyclinder but my VIN is not listed. Help please.

24 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2016 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 04/27/2020

My brake warning light came on when I depressed the brake peddle, after exiting a busy street onto a commercial driveway. The peddle bottomed-out and I had very little braking power. I was traveling at very low speed and I was able to stop by engaging the park brake. The master cylinder/reservoir was near depleted. I was unable to find evidence of brake fluid leak under the hood or under the vehicle. I refilled the master cylinder and operated the vehicle at the "off-street" lot where the malfunction occurred. After several applications of the brakes, the master cylinder was low again. I refilled it and drove home (near by). Again, I had to engage the park brake in order to come to a stop in my driveway. The master cylinder was near empty and again I was unable to find a leak. . Read more...

25 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2016 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 04/10/2020

As I was travelling down the highway at approximately 65 mph, a low brake fluid notification appeared on my display. Additionally I saw the brake warning light illuminated. When I applied the brakes the pedal went all the way to the floor. I stopped and opened the hood to verify the empty brake fluid reservoir . Once verified I refilled by purchasing a 32 oz bottle of dot4 brake fluid. Once refilled with almost the whole bottle, the brake pressure momentarily returned. However upon returning to the highway, I felt the brake pressure go away again and the low fluid light re-lit within 10 minutes. I then went to the local Ford dealership about another 10 miles away. There was very little brake pressure the whole way. I only had about an inch of play and had to apply the brakes several seconds (5-10) earlier than normal. The Ford dealership diagnosed the issue and reported the following "tech check on customer concern, brake fluid reservor empty, put vehicle on hoist check for external leaks , no external leaks , remove brake master cylinder and found all brake fluid leak into brake booster, brake master cylinder leaking into brake booster, need to replace brake master cylinder, and brake booster that is contaminated with brake fluid".

26 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2016 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 01/03/2020

My 20 year old daughter was driving through a parking lot and without any prior problems or indication of a brake issue the brake pedal went to the the floor board and the truck barely came to a stop before hitting other vehicles in the parking lot, at this time a warning chime and warning message displaying low brake fluid appeared on the instrument cluster. She happened to be in the Ford dealership parking lot picking the truck up from multiple recalls being preform (non brake related). She pulled back in the service lane and asked for assistance, the service writer went and got the technician to inspected it in the service lane, he checked the brake fluid reservoir and it was completely empty causing the truck to loose all brakes. They ended up keeping the vehicle over night and inspected it the next day. . The technician added more brake fluid to the brake reservoir and tested the trucks brakes and the brake master cylinder immediately lost the brake fluid into the brake booster. The technician diagnosed the failure as the brake master cylinder leaking fluid into the brake booster. Now both the brake master cylinder and brake booster need to be replaced at a cost of $1,031. From what I have researched this is a widely know problem with 2013 to 2018 Ford f150s equipped with the 3. 5 liter engine like we have. My daughter was extremely fortunate she was driving at slow speeds through a parking lot, if this would of happened traveling a higher rate of speed it could of ended up causing serious injury or death! this matter needs to be addressed in a swift way to prevent anymore drivers being at risk, not only to the occupants of the defective vehicle but those that could be hit by the out of control Ford F-150!.

27 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2015 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 12/01/2019

Brake fluid is leaking. I was driving and all of a sudden my brakes went all the way to the floor and I nearly lost control of the vehicle. I also got a notice of low brake fluid, so I put some in and a few days later it was low again. I noticed that it is leaking out onto other parts under my hood.

28 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2015 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 11/10/2019

I was driving my 2015 f150, towing a trailer of around 7000 lbs. All of the sudden my truck said low brake fluid and the pedal went straight to the floor. This happened on a highway. This turned out to be the same problem that Ford recalled in the 13-14 models. The master cylinder leaks into the brake booster, leaving no trace of leaking brake fluid, and therefore you will not know until it is too late.

29 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2013 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 11/01/2019

My truck has a 5. 0 motor but is experiencing the exact same thing as this recall that only affects trucks with a 3. 5 motor. I have to refill the reservoir about once a month whether I am driving it or not. 30 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2014 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 10/17/2019

Husband was driving our 2014 f150 truck and was stopped at a stop light; break peddle went completely to floor. When he got home, it was discovered that break fluid was leaking from the front right compartment. Confirmed with Ford that our truck was not part of the recall 16s24, but was built in the dearborn plant during the same time frame as the trucks that were recalled and there is still a wide scope of vehicles that are not within the scope of the recall having the same issue. Truck VIN is 1ftfw1cf6ek18365.

31 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2016 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 09/25/2019

I was driving down the highway when my brake system alert started going off and brake alerts on dash, a minute later I went to brake and had no brakes, I was able to get off the highway and to a parking lot. I opened up the hood and there was no brake fluid, I bought more fluid and attempted to drive 3 more blocks and all the alerts went off again and no brakes, I pulled over, checked the fluid and it was gone. There was no signs of leaks and all the fluid went into the booster and engine, causing a thick cloud of smoke. I went to . Carproblemzoo. Com/Ford/f-150/2016/brake and found 65 people with the same issue. Are we waiting for someone to get killed. I have not received a recall is there one? I am the only owner and the truck has less than 20,000 miles on it. No accidents.

32 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2014 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 09/24/2019

While driving on the freeway, brake fluid low light appeared followed by loss of brakes. Had to use emergency brakes to avoid hitting the car in front of me. Had vehicle towed to nearest Ford dealership. Mechanics stated that the brake fluid leaked internally between the booster and master cylinder.

Failure Date: 09/22/2019

On 09/22/2019 while driving, on a local city street, where the speed limits vary from 30-45 mph, my brakes became completely ineffective while driving in a 45 mph zone. My vehicle is a 2015 Ford F-150 with 63,000 miles. I inspected the brake fluid reservoir, and it was completely empty with no sign of leakage anywhere. I did a quick search on this issue and learned that Ford had issued a recall for the same issues on the 2013-2014 models, but not 2015 and up, which are now experiencing the same symptoms. The vehicle is currently at a local Ford dealership where I am finding it difficult to get a resolution. The dealership has confirmed at this point that it is the brake master cylinder that has leaked fluid into the brake booster, which caused the loss of brakes, and is the exact same problem as the recall for the previous year models. The dealership is supposed to provide me with an estimate of the repairs, but have yet to do so after a week of being at the dealership.

34 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2016 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 09/19/2019

I was driving on the freeway, when the low brake fluid light came on. I pulled over to the next exit and went to a gas station and added two bottles of brake fluid to get the level above the minimum line. The pedal pressure was decreasing with each use and I drove the rest of the way to work, about a 1/2 mile. After letting the car sit for 3 hours the fluid was gone and there was no visible sight of fluid on the ground. I added more fluid and did not drive the truck, but 3 hours later the fluid was gone again. I took the truck to the dealer, 1/2 mile away and the brakes were gone at this point. The mechanic diagnosed that the fluid was leaking from the master cylinder to the brake booster according to the service report. The master and booster were replaced and the truck functions properly again. I know this was an issue on the 2013-2014 f150s and there was a recall, but this happened in a 2016 F-150 with 37,000 miles where a failure like this should not have happened. I am reporting this since there could be a similar failure happening on the 2015+ f150s as the previous generation.

35 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2016 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 09/18/2019

Brakes suddenly and without warning became nearly unusable, brake pedal soft and to the floor and extremely long stopping distance. This was followed by a brake warning light and a "brake fluid low" warning on the instrument panel display. Dealer reports a master brake cylinder failure and leak of brake fluid requiring master cylinder and booster replacement.
