Ford F-150 owners have reported 172 problems related to brake fluid leak (under the service brakes category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Ford F-150 based on all problems reported for the F-150.
Got into my truck this morning and brake pedal went to the floor and in the display it showed low brake fluid. I filled up the reservoir and pumped brakes and they were good so I drove down the road about 15 miles and pedal went to the floor again and the display said low brake fluid. Got vehicle back to house and filled it back up with brake fluid and pumped brakes and no leaks but still losing fluid. Checked online and found Ford had a recall of the brake reservoir leaking fluid into the booster but it was for August 2013 and my truck was made in June of 2013 so I didn't get a recall. Dealership confirmed this is what's happening to my truck. Ford needs to take a look at this and include more vehicles in this recall before someone gets killed because their brakes fail.

Complete brake failure. While my 15 year old son was driving with his learners permit, we were exiting a highway. The weather was clear and dry. As he was slowing down the vehicle on a 65mph hwy off ramp, at approxamatly 35-40 mph the low brake fluid light came on and the brake pedal went soft and almost to the floor. He wasn't able come to complete stop. We made a right turn rolling onto the cross street and an oncoming vehicle had to slam on their brakes to avoid us. I then took over the driving to get the vehicle home. It was clear there were no power brakes and the brake pedal was soft, taking mutch more distance to depress the pedal. Once we were home I added brake fluid again and again totaling two quarts of fluid. The fluid would only last in the reservior for several minutes then it would drain down. There were no signs of fluid leaking anywhere along the entire brake system. The vehicle is now undrivable. My asumption is that the fluid is leaking into the brake booster. The vehicle is in transit to the dealer for diagnostics.

On 7 September 2019 we returned from a family trip of 9 days. During this time the F-150 was sitting in the garage the whole time. When we returned I went to back the truck out of the garage and when I depressed the brake pedal I had no brakes. Shortly noticing that there were no brakes the low brake fluid indicator came on. I checked the reservoir and indeed the level was really low, when it was full before we left on the trip. There were no pools or puddles of fluid anywhere. On 10 sept, I refilled the reservoir with brake fluid. While remaining in the driveway, I pumped the brakes. The break pedal consistently went to the floor with no breaking power. After several pumps of the breaks the low fluid level indicator came back on. I checked to see the level and indeed again it was below the minimum marker. And again there is no indication of leaking anywhere. There are no pools of fluid anywhere in the engine compartment nor under the vehicle. I plan to take the truck to the dealer for repairs. The vehicle has not been in an accident due to this problem. Some motion was used to verify if the breaks were working. All of this occurred in the garage or on the driveway of the house.

Brake failure due to brake fluid leaking through master cylinder and being sucked into the exhaust. The fluid is sucked out of the brake system through a vacuum line in the master cylinder and booster which lowers the fluid level and lets air into the brake lines. The brake fluid is then burned in the exhaust and creates white smoke from the exhaust pipe. The "low brake fluid" light came on while driving on a main city road and the brakes went out immediately after. The vehicle would stop only if the brake pedal was compressed all the way to the floor. On several occasions the emergency brake had to be used to bring the vehicle to a complete stop. After the "low brake fluid" light came on, more brake fluid (32 oz) was added but it was immediately sucked through the master cylinder and into the exhaust and the problem persisted. I scheduled an appointment to have a local Ford dealership flush the brake system as I assumed there was air in the lines due to the low fluid level. After the dealership flushed the brake and replaced all fluid the vehicle still had no brakes. This is when the problem with the master cylinder was discovered.
Sitting at a stop sign and "low brake fluid" light came on. Drove less than a mile home ready to use the ebrake after noticing the brake went all the way to the floor before stopping, so didn't know how much was left. The brake fluid was very low. Added brake fluid, drove it around the block and as I was pulling into the driveway, the "low brake fluid" light came on again. Turns out, it's the master cylinder leaking all the fluid into the brake booster, which apparently is a known issue that Ford is ok with? they recalled the 2013 and 2014s, but 2015s and 2016s are having the same problem. Shame.
Low brake fluid light came on. Was able to get to parking lot. When I went to drive the truck a few hours later it had absolutely no brakes!!! had I driven any further I would have surely crashed and died since I was on a highway. No fluid was leaking. Had to tow to dealership. Need to recall the 2016's too.
The vehicle was in motion going about 5 mph when the brakes failed when I was turning into a parking spot at the pharmacy on 8/17/19. I had to use the parking brake to completely stop when parking the truck and then once stopped the low brake fluid warning came on. Then I drove to an auto part store that was a 1/4 of a mile down the road and put more brake fluid in and drove home, but once I was home the brake fluid tank was empty. I put more in and found a puddle of brake fluid coming out of the front passenger side of the truck. The truck is currently in the shop and they stated the master brake cylinder and brake booster failed.
I was driving down the highway when my brake system alert started going off and brake alerts on dash, a minute later I went to brake and had no brakes, I was able to get off the highway and to a parking lot. I opened up the hood and there was no brake fluid, I bought more fluid and attempted to drive 3 more blocks and all the alerts went off again and no brakes, I got pulled over, checked the fluid and it was gone. There was no signs of leaks and all the fluid went into the booster and engine, causing a thick cloud of smoke I called a tow truck and it was taken to a Ford dealer. They said it was not covered because I was just over the warranty period. It is costing me over $800. I am very lucky it wasn't a bad accident. This needs to be addressed. All the fluid went into the booster and into the engine. The Ford dealer will have all the information and are repairing it now. I could add it later if needed.
On starting stationary vehicle received audible warning of low brake fluid. Brake pedal went all the way to the floor. Vehicle had been driven normally 2 days prior with no indication. Opened hood and observed brake fluid in reservoir below min. Added brake fluid to between min and max. Restarted vehicle and pressed brake pedal again to floor. Observed fluid level lower within reservoir, but no fluid observed coming from vehicle. Continued to add fluid, pump pedal and observe fluid draining, but no fluid leak found. Total fluid added - 36 oz. Vehicle towed to dealer. Service department concurred with self-assessment that master cylinder had failed and draining fluid was collecting in brake booster housing. Service department quoting $1000 to repair. Vehicle 37 months old, 47000 miles - just out of warranty. Had vehicle had been in motion I feel confident collision would have occurred / injuries likely. My gravest concern is that failure of major safety system did not have any precursor nor external symptoms. Hard for low age/low mileage vehicle to hold value with this issue.
While heading to the dentist yesterday I was driving and the low brake fluid light came on, thought maybe a sensor fault and kept driving, next the brake light indicator in the instrument cluster came on. So I pulled over and the pedal went to the floor. I barely stopped in time because there was a stop sign. I popped the hood and there was no fluid in the master cylinder. I locked the truck up and walked 3 blocks to a ace hardware to get some more fluid. I got back to the truck and checked for leaks but didn't find any. So I filled up the fluid and pumped the brakes, I had enough to get me home safely. When I got home I checked again and found the fluid to be all gone again. That was withing a 5 mile distance to where I filled it up last. I checked for leaks once again and didn't find any. So I pulled the vacuum sensor off the bottom of the brake booster and all of the brake fluid poured out. The master cylinder failed and kept pushing the brake fluid into the booster.
Tl-the contact owns a 2015 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while stopped in traffic, accelerated, attempted to stop, the brake pedal traveled all the way down to the floor. The contact had to use the emergency brake to stop. The low brake fluid message came on the message center. The contact went to the nearest parts store and purchased the approved brake fluid, filled the reservoir and the brake pedal traveled again all the way down to the floor. The vehicle was taken to an unknown independent mechanic, they determined that the vehicle had a cracked brake line and the fluid was leaking, needed replacement. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for a diagnostic. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 79,500. Bp.
Complete brake failure with limiter warning. Driving and brake fluid level light came on. Stopped at a gas station refilled brake fluid. Lost brake pressure after driving less than a mile from gas station. Refilled brake fluid. Next morning starting seeing white smoke in exhaust. All of the brake fluid drained out of brake fluid out and leaking from master cylinder.
While driving my 2015 Ford f150 the brakes failed. First the low brake fluid light came on, I added brake fluid and everything appeared to be normal. I went to pull my truck into my garage and the brake light came on and the brake pedal went to the floor. I almost went through the wall into my house. My local service station stated that the Ford f150 2013 & 2014 had recalls on the brake master cylinder and the brake vacuum booster pump. My mechanic stated that the rear seal went and caused all the fluid to leak out.
While driving total loss of brakes, pedal to the floor. No fluid in master cylinder. Master cylinder failed and fluid leaked into booster and burned off in engine.
Completely lost brakes while pulling a car trailer and car on highway. No leaks, but master cylinder completely dry. Refilled and went 20 miles and empty again. Master was leaking fluid into booster and being sucked into engine and burning it. Had to use emergency brake and downshift transmission to stop. Truck was towed to Ford for repair. Ford customer service wouldn't help with repair until they are told to recall them by government. Someone is going to get killed. Brakes were gone in an instant.
Brake fluids are leaking from master cylinder into the driver side cabin floor and slight loss of brake performance when driving in the city streets or highway.
Tl the contact owns a 2015 Ford F-150. The contact stated that all the indicators illuminated on the instrument panel and a message appeared indicating that the brake fluid was low. Also, while driving 70 mph, the brake pedal was depressed to the floorboard; however, the vehicle failed to respond. The vehicle came to a rolling stop. The vehicle was towed to butch oustalet Ford (9274 us 49, gulfport, ms 39503, (228) 863-5525) where it was diagnosed that the master cylinder failed and brake fluid leaked onto the brake booster. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted. The failure mileage was 90,800.
While driving to work I got a warning engine in my truck that indicated I had a problem with my brakes. I took it straight to an independent mechanic who diagnosed the problem. All of the brake fluid had leaked into the brake booster and had been burnt off in the engine. He told me that there was a recall, but I would have to check with Ford. I took the truck to the dealership I purchased it from and was told that even though I had experienced the exact failure described in recall#16v345000, and even though my truck is the exact make & model included in the recall that my VIN was not included and therefore would not be covered under the recall. My truck is 5 years old and only has 42k miles on it. Ford is offering to replace the master cylinder & brake booster for a cost of $1032 +tax. With an independent mechanic's diagnosis and Ford service departments same diagnosis that the failure and the make & model are identical, I do not understand why my truck is not covered under the recall and request a further investigation as to why Ford is not responsible for the replacement of the failed components.

Brake master cylinder reservoir leaked all fluid into the brake booster resulting in "low brake fluid" warning seconds before brake pedal went all the way to the floor with no braking power. Traveling in the sacramento mountains on vacation in southern new mexico when this happened. Could have been very serious not only injuring us but other opposing traffic. Occurred on hwy 82 between cloudcroft and alamogordo on July 6 2019. Very steep stretch of road that cost the life of another truck driver just 1 month prior that went over the side down the canyon. Called the Ford dealer in alamogordo and they said no warranty and we would have to pay in addition to having the vehicle towed. Again, we were on vacation and stranded. We had a mobile mechanic order the necessary parts, and 3 working days later (happened on a Saturday and parts arrived Wednesday) we were back on the road. Very stressful since this has been a major recall on years 2013-14, with over 300 reports on 2015-16 with no recall. Brake failure is serious, and Ford should treat it as such.
After taking a 100 mile trip truck was parked for 24 hours. As I started vehicle information screen showed a low brake fluid level and a brake warning light on. After exploring the master cylinder was extremely. After examining all brake lines and the ground for leaking fluid ther was none/wet spots any where. I went to a care store with a different vehicle I added 12 fluid ounces of dot 4 brake fluid. After testing the brakes depressing the brake pedal 4 or 5 times the pedal stayed very soft and depessed all the way to the floor. Once again the master cylinder was empty of fluid wit absolutely no oil visible on the truck or on ground . Had vehicle towed to a repair facility. I was told by the mechanic that master cylinder fail and all fluid accumulated in the booster pump. I am aware the Ford has recalled 2013/2014 ff-150 with the 3. 5 engine for the same problem. .
Brake fail know problem need to expand recall to include more trucks master cylinder leaks into power booster . . Read more...
After pulling out of the parking lot of the place we stayed and driving 1/2 mile on a 2 lane road, I attempted to pull over at a gas station for gas before getting onto the interstate. I noticed the brake pedal was very spongy and braking was barely responsive. The pedal was pressed to the floor and then the check brakes indicator message dinged on the truck's info display as I was slowly able to pull into the gas station. After using the e-brake to assist in bringing the truck to a stop, I placed the truck in park and raised the hood. I checked the brake fluid reservoir level and it was well below the minimum line and was close to completely empty. I crawled under the vehicle to visually inspect for leaks of any kind from the brake lines following them up to the brake booster and brake master cylinder with no presence of any leaking brake fluid. I added a total of 2 quarts of dot 4 brake fluid to the reservoir in the hopes that maybe the system was just low somehow. I drove the truck back to the park we had just left only a little over a half mile away and parked the vehicle as the braking was still greatly diminished. As it is the weekend, I have been unable to get the vehicle serviced. I have called the Ford recall help line and was told that my truck was not included in the 2013-2014 f150 vehicle recall even though it is the 3. 5 ecoboost model and was built using the identical brake components that were recalled by Ford. Based on the description of the brake master cylinder failure conditions indicated in the 16s24 Ford recall and the conditions I am experiencing with my vehicle's brake failure, I am confident these conditions are related and the brake master cylinder has failed flooding the brake booster with brake fluid.
11jun2019 0600 - pulling into parking space at gas station and warning light comes on for low brake fluid. Brakes still operating normally at this point. I leave the gas station and drive approximately a mile to the closest store to purchase brake fluid, presuming only a top off is required. By the time I get to the store, braking has diminished by 90%. I have the truck towed to the closest Ford dealership, where they diagnose the problem as failure in brake master cylinder, with brake fluid leaking into brake booster, resulting in total loss of braking.
I own a 2015 f150 with the 3. 5l motor and 47,000 miles. This morning the " low brake fluid " light came on then within minutes I started experiencing low/spongy brake pedal. I pull over and check the master cylinder, the fluid level was very low. I add 2 containers ( 24 FL. Oz. ) of brake fluid to refill master cylinder and drove about 3 miles when the brake malfunction light return along with low/spongy brake pedal. I called Ford roadside for a tow. There was no visible fluid leak at the master cylinder area or at the 4 wheels. However I believe that this is a major leak because that fluid did not take long to leak out ( 3 miles and about 10 minutes ).
Came to a stop sign and everything worked, at the next stop sign it was as if someone flipped a switch (residential area with many intersections). My brake pedal would sink to the floor and could barely stop the truck. However if slamming the brakes the abs would function and stop the truck as expected. Inspected brake system and fluid level was above minimum in the reservoir and found no external leaking of brake fluid (failure was internal to the master cylinder). Towed back home and isolated master cylinder and found it to be the issue. Replaced master cylinder and brakes function properly again. (when I removed the master the boosted still held vacuum and fluid was not leaking into booster. ).
Driving in the new orleans french quarter, audible warning tone and visual indicator said "brake fluid low". Added one container of brake fluid, proceeded 1/2 mile. Again, audible warning and visual indicator showed low brake fluid. Added fluid to line in container. 1 mile, same indicators. Upon inspection, all brake fluid has leaked into the brake booster. No visible leak or fluid on the ground. This could have caused a serious accident. There is a recall on this for the same year vehicle but it supposedly does not include this VIN #. Apparently it should.
Truck was 40 months old with 33,000 miles. No history of brake issues or brake warning lights. Brake fluid low warning light came on while in motion about 1 mile from starting point. Within a few minutes and 1-2 miles of continued driving the brakes completely failed. Brake pedal went to floor with no braking or brake fluid pressure. Truck towed to dealership with diagnosis of master cylinder rear seal leaking fluid into brake booster. This was a sudden and total failure of the braking system. Hundreds of thousands of 2013 f150s were recalled for similar master cylinder failures. This is a serious safety hazard to everyone on the road. My family no longer feels safe in this truck. This sort of failure is unacceptable given current technology and engineering. Poor design, poor engineering, poor quality control. This unacceptable failure endangers people and Ford should be forced to recall this faulty component.
Tl the contact owns a 2013 Ford F-150. While driving various speeds, the brake fluid warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who informed the contact of NHTSA campaign number: 16v345000 (service brakes, hydraulic). The mechanic stated that the brake fluid leaked into the master cylinder. The contact called an unknown dealer, but they were not able to assist. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 42,000.
After driving for on for about an hour I pulled off the highway and my brake peddle went very soft. Brake fluid low warning and my brake light came on. I go the truck stopped (slowly) and checked fluid - virtually empty. I nursed the truck to a service station filled fluid drove about 7 miles slowly to home and light came on again. Pulled in fluid was gone. Found that the fluid was leaking into the booster cylinder. Have to replace the master and booster cylinder. This appears to be an open investigation and it needs to be elevated before someone is seriously hurt. This could have been an accident easily.
On 05/11/19 while driving I experienced nearly complete brake failure. I took the truck to my local mechanic who diagnosed the failure due to the master cylinder rupturing. Sequentially the leaking brake fluid drained into the brake booster which also had to be replaced. As this happened while I was driving it was quite miraculous no one was injured.
While on a road trip from the sf bay area to las vegas and having been there just one day, the valet at ceasar's palace drove my truck to the front entrance of the hotel/casino where many people and vehicles were coming and going. When I got in my truck, the brake warning/failure lights were brightly lit and the brake pedal went mushy right to the floor. When I inspected the brake fluid reservoir, it was near empty (see attached photo). When I looked beneath the vehicle, there was no indication of a leak and no indication of a leak in the engine compartment. The truck mileage was around 62k and had the 60k service recently which included new front rotors and pads installed by a Ford dealer in the sf bay area. For the brake failure, I had the truck repaired at the Ford dealer in las vegas. They reported that brake fluid leaked from the hydraulic cylinder secondary seal into the brake booster. Both the hydraulic cylinder and brake booster required replacement at a cost of nearly $1400. 00! fortunately, I wasn't driving when the brake failure occurred. There were no accidents or injuries. Thank god.
Tl the contact owns a 2015 Ford F-150. The contact stated that the brakes malfunctioned and traveled to the floorboard when the brake pedal was depressed. The contact had to use the emergency brake to stop the vehicle. The vehicle was at the contact's home when the failure occurred. Alan jay Ford Lincoln (3201 us hwy 27 s, sebring, FL 33870, (863) 385-0144) diagnosed that the master cylinder was leaking fluid into the brake booster. Both the master cylinder and brake booster were replaced. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 47,016.
Truck was moving straight forward at 10mph on a suburban street, brake pedal depressed all the way to the floor, vehicle did not stop. No brake fluid leak apparent, reservoir for brake fluid is slightly over full. Suspect faulty master cylinder.

Tl the contact owns a 2014 Ford F-150. While reversing the vehicle, the brake pedal became stuck to the floorboard. The contact drove the vehicle back onto the driveway, inspected the vehicle, and found that the brake fluid was leaking through the brake lines. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and stated that the vehicle's warranty was expired. The approximate failure mileage was 26,000.
At 61,000 miles, while driving on the highway, my master cylinder suffered a sudden catastrophic failure (total brake fluid leak). This resulted in required replacement of entire front braking system at dealership.
