1 Engine Failure problem of the 2016 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 09/29/2023

2016 Ford f150 with 55,000 miles. Started driving vehicle, engine rpm dropped, engine missing and shaking. No throttle response. Vehicle just idled horribly. Dash had large wrench symbol and an "accutrac service needed" warning. I turned off ignition, restarted vehicle. Same results. I did this 4-5 more times. Last time vehicle idled okay and accelerated. Drove the vehicle 60 miles home with no ther issues. Checked with an obd-ii diagnostics and gave 2 codes: p2111 throttle control system-stuck open and p2112 throttle actuator control system-stuck closed. Now, now warning light or any indication of problem on dash. No warning lamps prior to problem. Safety was at risk because without warning, pulling out into heavy traffic and losing the ability to accelerate with traffic could cause a serious accident. Looking this problem up in an online Ford f150 forum indicates this is a fairly common problem. Why has there been no recall for this potentially deadly engine failure circumstance?.

Eight days after new purchase, with 416 miles on the odometer the engine failed from a currently undiagnosed defect. Large amounts of white smoke from the exhaust covered the highway, potentially affecting visibility of other drivers. The vehicle lost all power, after pulling off from highway the engine would not start. Ford dealership service department verified the engine locked up after the failure.

3 Engine Failure problem of the 2012 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 10/18/2020

The 2011-2013 Ford F-150 eco boost is known to have timing chain stretch issues causing possible total engine failure. 25 months ago we spent $3,700 having cams and phasers and all chains repaired by a Ford certified dealer with Ford motor craft parts. Less than 1 month following the warranty of the work the secondary timing chain has failed leaving the vehicle useable while my wife was traveling down a gravel road and we are looking at another $3,700 repair plus a tow and inconvenience for a known and repeated problem and Ford will not stand behind these issues.

4 Engine Failure problem of the 2013 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 08/20/2019

My 2013 f150 platinum died on me while driving, and would not start back up. I had it diagnosed by david stanley Ford in midwest city and found out that I needed to have a fuse relocation kit put in to fix my engine failure. I researched what that was, and found out that the factory installed Mini fuse running the fuel pump cannot handle the amount of current going through it, and overtime it melts the fuse box itself, instead of blowing the fuse, which causes complete engine failure. It is such a commonly known issue that Ford has even issued a TSB explaining how to fix and install this problem with the above mentioned kit. Why I am complaining is because this issue that causes dangerous engine failure while driving and which leaves the owner stranded, is not a recall when even Ford knows that it is a factory installed malfunction. It is 100% a safety issue for not only those driving 2009-2014 Ford vehicles where this issue has been known to occur, but also for everyone else on the road when your Ford vehicle dies while driving down the road or highway.

5 Engine Failure problem of the 2012 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 06/05/2019

While driving at 60mph the transmission shifted into first without warning, causing a sudden loss of control of the vehicle almost causing multiple accidents as I was in the middle of rush hour traffic. The sudden down shift over spun the motor, resulting in a lower engine knock which a certified Ford technician believes is the result of a bearing failure. Even though the technician performed a cylinder leakage test in which no indication of valve interference was identified, the Ford engineer he was dealing with said he had seen this issue before! this is the same recall issue that has caused multiple accidents! there are dozens of blog posts where this issue has caused, at the very least, multiple trips to the dealerships and in rare cases (not including mine), engine failure. I have calculated the engines rpm's using the formula: axle ratio x vehicle speed x transmission ratio x 336. 13) / tire diameter = engine speed. At the time of the incident, the engine's rpm's were at an estimated 9,074 rpm's [(3. 55 x 60mph x 4. 17 x 336. 13)/32. 9]. The tachometer only goes to 7,000 rpms! there are two recalls (19n01 and 19s07) that can cause intermittent shifting into first. The day before the incident, I went to the local Ford dealership and was told they couldn't get me in for recall fixes because they needed to "take care of their paying customers first. " I have talked with four different Ford customer service representatives, the answer has been the same; "there is nothing Ford motor company can do for you at this time. " I feel Ford has been very neglectful in taking responsibility of this issue, not only for myself but the countless other people that have had similar problems.

7 Engine Failure problem of the 2014 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 05/05/2019

Engine failure - limp mode - this is a known problem with the Ford F-150 ecoboost that Ford and NHTSA have yet to address/ issue a recall. I have owned this truck for less than a month and it has twice now gone into limp mode. Merging lanes on the highway and the engine failed, a complete loss of power and ability to accelerate. I was able to avoid a terrible accident and get to the side of the highway. After reading hundreds of complaints online from other f150 owners I was able to see that the dealerships and Ford know about this issue, but have yet to address it. I checked the spark plugs and they were from the factory, yet gapped incorrectly as others have stated. The throttle body also will have to be replaced. This is horrible practice by Ford and NHTSA should address the thousands of complaints on the issue. This is going to kill someone eventually. I will be getting rid of this truck immediately and getting a reliable truck like I had previously.

8 Engine Failure problem of the 2012 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 09/20/2018

Engine failure while driving on city street. 85,xxx miles on vehicle. I purchased vehicle new. Engine threw a rod. Oil spilled all over roadway. Research conducted shows this is a common problem with the ecoboost engine due to intercoolers or timing chain issues. Had there been another vehicle behind me, this could have resulted in a crash due to vehicle losing power with no warning.

There was no engine warning light illumination while the failure occurred. However, the contact mentioned that brake warning light illuminated when the failure occurred. The contact stated that on one occasion the vehicle stalled while driving at 55 mph. The contact was able to move onto the shoulder of the road, restart the engine and regain normal function. However, the engine failure persisted and the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where a diagnostic testing was performed but was unable to locate a failure code. The independent mechanic researched the failure and advised that the engine fuse needed to be replaced. The engine fuse was replaced but the failure was not corrected. The vehicle continued to fail to start and stalled when driving. The vehicle was not taken to a dealership to have diagnostic testing performed. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The VIN was not available. The failure mileage was 118,000. Li.

11 Engine Failure problem of the 2018 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 03/12/2018

This issue is happening widespead amongst owners of Ford's new 3. 5l high output powertrain. Upon open throttle, the engine will instantly drop off all power, causing the truck to dangerously and unexpectedly drop to zero miles per hour. Very dangerous and life threatening while entering roadways or interstate roads with traffic. Upon open throttle, a "low oil pressure" light takes over the viewing area on the dash cluster and then disappears after restarting the vehicle. Upon restarting, the truck will fail and provide a "low oil pressure" signal again after applying open throttle. This can happen when taking off from a dead stop or under cruising speeds, when open throttle is applied, the engine fails and cuts off all power. It doesnt matter if you are turning or going straight, the issue happens regardless. Always happens under open throttle. This has become a widespead issue with owners of the truck from model year 2017-2018. Ford needs to respond and fix this issue for the safety of their customers.

12 Engine Failure problem of the 2008 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 12/18/2017

The contact owns a 2008 Ford F-150. While driving 50 mph, the engine failed and the check engine indicator illuminated. The vehicle was towed to a local dealer (auto nation of panama city, 1730 w 15th st, panama city, FL 32401) and was informed that the timing chain needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the issue and did not assist. The VIN was unknown. The failure mileage was 180,000.

13 Engine Failure problem of the 2005 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 08/11/2017

Purchased Ford f150 from old saybrook Ford, Feb. 16. The truck has the 5. 4 engine which has numerous complaints of engine failure. Driving on route 1 when truck eccelorates or loses power. When we bought the truck the chain guide was broke and eating through the case. Spark plugs get stuck in engine or propel them selves through the truck hood. Dangerous engine to have on road. I owe 8000. 00 on a truck that now needs 4-6000 worth of work.

14 Engine Failure problem of the 2016 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 01/26/2017

While driving about 20 mph through a residential neighborhood, vehicle lurched and jerked with a large thud. Thud was engine failing due to no oil pressure - oil not getting to engine. Limped home, car not able to go more than 30 mph to drive to dealership. Not shifting between gears. Had we been on highway, much bigger issue could have occurred - we were able to stop safely as we were in our own neighborhood. Ford is replacing engine but ryan holcomb (service manager at walker Ford, clearwater florida) has told us this is the fourth 2016 f150 that has come back to their dealership for a full engine replacement, and decision was made to continue selling because percentage of affected vehicles is a gamble. We bought truck 1/2/17, engine failure occurred 1/26/17 at odometer reading of 844 miles. Dealership in possession of truck since 1/27/17.

15 Engine Failure problem of the 2006 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 11/22/2016

I was driving on the road when the "engine failsafe warning' light came on. The entire engine shut down. No power at all. Very hard to stop and steer. I nearly got into an accident. Another time I was entering parking lot when it happened. I had the throttle body replaced to fix the problem. But shutting off the engine on a warning while driving is very dangerous. Some internet research indicates this is not a lone occurrence.

17 Engine Failure problem of the 2005 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 06/03/2016

While driving 75 on a toll road the engine went into engine fail safe mode, I lost all power and almost wrecked into oncoming traffic trying to get to the shoulder, I went to a mechanic and they replaced the throttle body, 3 days later same thing, I was told this is a common problem on this motor 5. 4, why is there not a recall on this ??.

18 Engine Failure problem of the 2012 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 04/06/2016

F-150 with ecoboost engine fails with hard acceleration in wet conditions. Fords fix is to install a new part due to a design defect that allows water to be ingested resulting in spark plug failure. On 4/17/2016 while attempting to merge on highway 57 the engine failed to power up and "bogging" down. This forced me on to the shoulder in order to avoid a collision with a 18 wheeler.

19 Engine Failure problem of the 2006 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 03/16/2016

On 3 occasions my vehicle ,over 4 months, has had a complete engine failure. This occurred most recently while I was exiting the interstate . When the engine shuts down so does the dash and brake lights, it also stops power steering and brakes. This time by reacting quickly I was able to put the vehicle in neutral and restart ,after turning key to off position first.

20 Engine Failure problem of the 2005 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 03/02/2016

Known issue with fuel injectors caused premature engine failure at 45k mi. Too much fuel when compressed and ignited blew the piston apart. Ford replaced engine. 80k miles later similar problems and recommendation is another engine. Two 5. 4l engines with less than 130k overall miles is absolutely unacceptable. Web searches say there is current litigation in progress over these 5. 4l engines. I'm making a formal complaint that the basis of the lawsuit has merit. Ford has already settled a suit over the spark plugs for these 5. 4l but the problems with these engines goes much deeper. I'm thankful my engine failures happened without any additional incident.

21 Engine Failure problem of the 2004 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 10/01/2015

The contact owns a 2004 Ford F-150. The contact stated that the motor in the three valve engine failed because the cam tower collapsed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was 72,300.

22 Engine Failure problem of the 2011 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 03/29/2015

My f150 ecoboost stalled twice in the rain while trying to pass another car. The truck lost all power while I was attempting to pass a vehicle in heavy traffic. This happened on i20. The engine failed a couple years back in rain and Ford installed a shroud over the intercooler. After reporting the second problem to the local dealer, Ford installed a modified "new" shroud on the intercooler. The govt prematurely closed the investigation of f150 ecoboost engines that have a major flaw that affect vehicle performance. Installing a modified shroud to fix a serious safety issue is not a solution. Please reopen the investigation for the Ford f150 owners that have the ecoboost engine.

24 Engine Failure problem of the 2012 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 12/26/2014

This is the 2nd (and 3rd, 4th, 5th) instance of a problem I originally described in odi 10659481. Again, after traveling on the interstate for a few hours in very light rain, the engine failed to accelerate normally while merging into traffic from an on-ramp. This created a very hazardous situation, with traffic bearing down on us from behind at approximately 75 mph and steady traffic also in the left lanes. Unlike the earlier occurrence on oct 28, the truck did not shake violently and the check-engine light (cel) did not flash. However, the truck was noticeably vibrating and very slow to accelerate to highway speed. Because Ford had declined to make repairs after the first incident due to odb codes reportedly not being present, I had purchased my own odb-ii scan tool. Indeed, no codes were logged for this incident either. On Dec 28 I traveled 550 additional miles on interstate in steady rain. I tested the engine 3 separate times by attempting sustained hard acceleration. Each time the truck shook and failed to accelerate normally, the cel finally illuminated steady and misfire codes were logged p0304, p0305 and p0306. In summary, I have experienced this F-150 ecoboost engine failure five times, but odb codes were not logged on the first two when attempting real-world critical maneuvers. The codes were only logged during intentional testing for longer periods of time. I am confirming that this is the safety defect as described in Ford TSB 13-8-1 "3. 5l gtdi -â  intermittent stumble/misfire on acceleration from highway cruise in humid or damp conditions". It is particularly concerning that evidence of this defect is not always logged by the vehicle computer and customers are therefore being denied the prescribed repairs. It is also concerning that fuel mileage has been seriously impaired (about 3 mpg highway) since the first occurrence.

25 Engine Failure problem of the 2005 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 11/21/2014

Tl- the contact owns a 2005 Ford F-150. The contact stated while driving approximately 60 mph and the engine stalled. The contact had coasted over to an emergency lane and the the engine failure system warning light had illuminated. The vehicle was restarted after multiple attempts. The vehicle had not yet been diagnosed of the failure and the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 103,000. Gb.

26 Engine Failure problem of the 2005 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 09/03/2014

We bought this vehicle new in 2005. Change oil as required and did regular services. Engine started knocking and running rough. Took to dealer who stated cam phasers went out which in turn blew the engine. Dealer states new engine is required on a 9-year old vehicle with less then 140,000. Dealer states cam phasers are very common problem in this engine (5. 4l trinitron) . Calls to numerous other local Ford dealers reveal numerous engine repairs due to cam phasers in the engine internet research find numerous issues with the cam phasers in this engine causing complete engine failure. Ford refuses to acknowledge the problem. Dealer quote to replace the engine on a 9-year old vehicle was $7150. 00.

27 Engine Failure problem of the 2005 Ford F-150

2005 Ford F-150. Consumer writes in regards to engine fail safe mode malfunctions causes vehicle to lose all power, brakes and steering. Consumer has different vehicle complaint in artemis. The dealer investigated the complaint, but was unable to identify the cause.

28 Engine Failure problem of the 2005 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 02/28/2014

I purchases a used 2005 Ford f150 about 5 months ago. Today, Feb 28, 2014, I was leaving my neighborhood and my trucks display flashed an message reading "engine failsafe mode". My truck lost all power, no steering and died. Luckily I was on surface streets and pulled it over with no power steering and engine dead. The mechanics cannot find the cause and the engine will start but continues to turn off and the vehicle's computer shuts down. Online I read of this happening on the freeway at 65 mph. Iam now terrified that my truck will shut off on the freeway with my children in the truck with me. This seems to be a life threatening problem. I called a Ford dealership and the service dept claimed they never heard of this but can work on it if I bring it in. What is my recourse? thank you.

29 Engine Failure problem of the 2011 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 12/19/2013

My family and I were on our way to disney world in orlando, florida when my 2011 Ford 3. 5 liter ecoboost f150 truck completely shut down on the interstate 10 highway in the middle of nowhere, probably 60 miles to the east of tallahassee florida. At first I thought that we were not going to make it, as the truck completely died out. I pulled off to the side and finally got the vehicle started. We had been steady state cruising with the cruise set at 70 for atleast 2-2. 5 hours. After doing some reading I see that it was probably condensation in the intercooler that entered the intake tract when I had accelerated to go around a big truck that was barely making it up a hill on interstate 10. This was a real bad experience, this has happened atleast 2 times since then. Luckily I have not had a wreck or crashed, but as I keep reading up, I see many people complaining about the ecoboost f150. Now, I have a truck in the shop with a blown motor, and I can only imagine that the water getting into the motor and the motor trying to compress that water was what caused my engine failure. I metal from the internal rotating assembly shoot through the side of my engine block last week. I believe that happened due to the water and the water bending the connecting rods. Please help.

30 Engine Failure problem of the 2012 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 11/22/2013

I experienced a sudden loss of power in my 2012 Ford f150 super crew with ecoboost engine. . This happened 3 times on 11-22-13 at interstate speeds, I was unable to pass slower vehicles that were running below the posted speed limit. Each time I tried to accelerate past in the passing lane the vehicle shook violently and it was as though I had run out of fuel. As soon as I took my foot off the accelerator pedal the truck would run again. The 3rd time this happened a semi truck was barreling up behind me and there was a semi on the side of me, I noticed the semi beside me moving into my lane and tried to accelerate to get clear and the semi behind me almost ran me down as my vehicle lost power and I had to pull over. This time I had to shut off the engine and restart it for the vehicle to run right again. After the 3rd time my truck went from getting 18 mpg to 12. 3 mpg and ran rough as though it was cutting out. The weather was rainy and the vehicles ahead of me were throwing up quite a bit of moisture. I took the truck to the Ford dealer the next day 11-23-13 and they kept the truck for repairs. I am concerned as I and my wife could have very easily been killed of maimed yesterday because of this engine failure. If this happens to some family, they could have a fatal accident and I don't want that on my conscience. If this is a recurring problem maybe there should be a recall to fix these trucks. Thank you for your consideration.

31 Engine Failure problem of the 2013 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 09/17/2013

The ecoboost engine looses power on take off in rainy weather. I has happened six times. The most recent was this morning 04/07/14. The problem occurs when the truck is taking off from a stop, such as traffic light or stop sign. The main problem seems to be the rain. After driving in rainy weather for a prolonged period of time the truck will not take off from a dead stop. The engine looses power and shakes violently. This morning while taking me daughter to school we pulled into traffic and tried to get up to speed. The engine failed and we had to pull to the side of the road. This has become a safety issue. It was not raining this morning but I did drive for several hours in the rain yesterday. I have contacted the dealer and they tell me my tuck already has the fix from Ford.

Failure Date: 06/06/2013

It is a new truck 2012 with about 650 miles when purchased. The first cold start the engine ran rough and had a slight miss. Told dealer said not to worry they could fix it. Went to ky on way back ran into a down pour of rain. The truck at about 40mph started to shake and quiver like it was going to quit . Got to the side of road to keep from getting hit from other vehicles. I have had it to the dealer numerous times they they cant fix it. I hope that no one gets hurt from this engine failure. The truck now has 4160 miles, it still idels rough and has miss. The dealer checked it out and still can't find the cause.
