36 Engine Failure problem of the 2004 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 10/25/2011

2 1/2 years ago my husband purchased a used 2004 F-150 fx4 with the 5. 4 tritan engine (with a 5 for the 8th digit in the VIN) along with a 2 year extended warranty (that covered the engine among other things), from a Ford dealership. It had just under 50,000 miles. Over time, we had the suggested oil changes, put new tires on, new battery and had the spark plugs changed. The problem I am most upset about is the â??tickingâ?? sound I heard the day my husband brought the truck home. When I asked about it he said he already asked the dealership what the sound was and they said it was just how â??this engine soundsâ??. It was such a strange sound, we asked two other Ford dealership and they stated the same thing, but they never looked into it. One morning in October, my husband was driving to work and the truck started shaking severely. It was so bad he had difficulty controlling the vehicle. If it wasn't on a back road, we know he would have been in an accident. We took it to court street Ford and they said they had to run diagnostics on it. They received a code of 340, but couldn't find anything wrong. The Ford dealership brought Ford engineers in to help identify what was wrong with the vehicle. Per the engineersâ?? suggestion, the mechanic would ask for permission to run a test. Each time, we were told, this test will tell us if it is this repair or that. After 2 â½ weeks and almost $700 in tests, imagine our surprise at the final diagnosis "catastrophic engine failure" due to clogged oil passages. Now we find that this particular sound is a symptom for this engine that has nothing but problems and even has a TSB for it (06-19-08). This TSB replaces parts that would prevent this problem, but was never part of a recall.

Complete engine failure less than 100,000 miles. Driver and front passenger window motor failure.

39 Engine Failure problem of the 2004 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 02/01/2011

2004 Ford f150 with 5. 4 liter v-8. Engine problems, stalling when slowing down, hestitation, spark plugs ratcheted down that they break when removing. Engines that need to be replaced because of design. Ford aware of problem but techs at Ford tell people its bad gas until it is too late. Check f150forum. Com and you will see how big the problem really is. I believe Ford knew of this problem and is trying to bury it. My engine failed in a snowstorm going up hill. I was almost in a terrible accident with snow covered roads. Mechanics know its a flawed engine, and I want to know why the NHTSA didn't do anything about it. You are told it is bad gas and to keep changing your fuel filter. My truck would not go over 85 miles an hour since I bought it new. I was told it was bad gas. I kept changing the filter every six months as I was told. I think they knew this engine had a bad design and kept people in the dark hoping the engine would last until it was out of warranty.

40 Engine Failure problem of the 1997 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 11/22/2010

Purchased a used 1997 Ford F-150 truck from a private one owner person, the truck had less than 58,000 original miles, this truck has a 4. 2 liter v-6 engine, which was well maintained. After driving the truck for less than 4 months of owning it the engine suffered a catastrophic engine failure due to a defect in engine gasket, torque sequence and other specific specs, have not been notified of this problem from Ford motor CO. As of yet. The engine suffered what is called hydraulic-lock and when the engine cranked up it bent piston rods in the motor and the piston skirts are now hitting the crankshaft, requires a total engine rebuild or new engine replacement.

41 Engine Failure problem of the 2004 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 11/16/2010

While traveling on I-70, westbound through illinois, my Ford F-150 began shaking violently and was barely controllable. There was no previous warning of any kind that there was a problem with the truck. I managed to get to an exit and got the truck to the nearest Ford dealer, in the small town of greenville, IL. The Ford mechanic diagnosed the problem as catastrophic engine failure. At least two valve stems had broken and the valves had fallen into the cylinders. They could not tell me what caused the failure but showed me a few of the parts they had removed (a broken valve spring, pieces of valve stem and a frozen rocker arm). The engine had been scrupulously maintained and the oil and filter were changed at least every 5000 miles. The engine was clean and there was plenty of oil. I have since seen several on-line posts about this engine (Ford's 5. 4 liter v-8 gas) failing due to faulty valve springs failing. I believe this engine has serious flaws that might cause serious problems if engine failure happens at high speed in traffic. Fortunately, I was in very light traffic when the failure happened.

42 Engine Failure problem of the 2004 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 04/26/2010

Engine started knocking at 62,000 miles leading to total catastrophic engine failure while driving. Engine shut down and I had limited control of the vehicle while driving.

43 Engine Failure problem of the 2006 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 12/15/2009

I'm an owner of a 2006 Ford F-150 5. 4 engine. I have had 3 engine failures with this truck the first one was an injector. Second was a timing solenoid. Third was a coil. I had over 100,000 kms. I had my plugs changed. The mechanic ended up breaking off 6 plugs in the engine. This is a very expensive repair, it should only be regular maintenance. I have done a great deal of research and have found it is a very widespread problem. I feel owners should be compensated. Any advice I can receive would be helpful thanks in advance.

44 Engine Failure problem of the 2003 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 10/26/2009

1. Normal operation 2. Spark plugs are blown out of the engine head; this is the second occurrence; engine failure. Had the occurrence been 200 miles earlier, I would have been in the middle of peak traffic conditions on i405 near bellvue washington state, heavy rain with poor visibility - consequences would have been dire. 3. Ford acknowledges that they know of the problem. The service manager at the local dealership indicated that they have had a "ton" of these repair jobs. At $400+ per occurrence, I question why they haven't done anything to protect the consumer? why no notification of the problem. I'm told there have been service advisory's issued, but shops and service counters share none of this with me. Now that my vehicle is 5 yrs old with 129k miles, what will the frequency of this problem be. As the f150 fleet ages, how many more occurrence will there be prior to food issuing a solution? I'm told by dealerships that the spark plug seat only consists of a few thread to hold the spark plug in. Plugs do not have a seat ring (compression ring) to assist in the plug to stay seated. As the plug loosens, blow by occurs and eventually blowing the plug out through the treads in the engine head. I've never heard of such a problem, let alone having this occur to my twice. Parts houses had concurred that the problem is prevalent and they laugh about it. Who is going to laugh when this known unsafe engineering flaw causes death or injury? their repair has not resolved the problem, nor did they give up this information without me first seeking factual information. The public is being deceived!.

45 Engine Failure problem of the 2004 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 06/03/2009

I was driving the truck at about 45 mph when I felt the engine "missing". I rolled down my window and could hear the engine missing and running very rough. I was about 30 seconds from my house, so I continued. Right before I got to my house I shut off the engine and coasted into my driveway. I tried cranking the truck the next morning and it idled rough for about 10 seconds and then the engine failed. I towed it to the Ford dealership where they diagnosed that it hydrolocked. There was a lot of gas and water in the oil pan (the entire coolant system had dumped there). It was then that I found out that there was a recall on 2005 f150's for the same problem, a faulty fuel injector that caused hydrolocking. I called Ford and asked if I was covered under this recall since I had the same part. They informed me it was only for 2005, not for 2004 regardless of the part #. They offered me no help since my truck was at 72k miles. The truck was impeccably maintained with the oil being changed every 3k miles.

46 Engine Failure problem of the 1997 Ford F-150

47 Engine Failure problem of the 2005 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 05/04/2008

The contact owns a 2005 Ford f150. While driving, the vehicle lost some power and the engine light illuminated which read engine failed soft mode. The consumer took the vehicle to the dealer, but the could not duplicate the problem. The dealer told the consumer the vehicle was safe to drive, however once the consumer approached a light, the vehicle stalled, the fail safe light came on and the brakes locked up. Smoke emitted from under the hood and then there was a fire. The vehicle was destroyed.

50 Engine Failure problem of the 2007 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 07/01/2007

At 33k mile my 2007 f 150 with the 5. 4 liter engine had engine failure. The engine failed as a result of a know problem that Ford has with a back of the 5. 4 liter engine having to much end play on the cam shaft. As a result the engine was starved for oil and failed in the middle of a trip. The oil pressure dropped to 0 when the engine was full of oil. Ford's suggestion is to only replace heads when they know that the engine was starved for oil. They will not officially admit to the problem but several Ford employees have told me Ford is aware of the situation. The engine initially locked up and would not re start. Had this happened at high speed the situation could have been deadly.

56 Engine Failure problem of the 1998 Ford F-150

Failure Date: 10/22/2004

The 1998 Ford f150 pick up truck 4. 2 liter v6 engine threw a rod during startup one morning. The engine had 70,000 easy miles on it. No towing, racing or hard driving. I had the engine replaced at a cost of $4200. 00 with a jasper engine at mr. Engine because Ford would not help at all unless I paid them $7500. 00 for a new Ford engine. I had already replaced two automatic transmissions in this same vehicle. The first time it cost me $2200. 00 at 50,000 miles to rebuild the original, and the second time $1800. 00 to replace the original with a remanufactured jennings transmission at 160,000. From all I have heard Ford knew about the engine gasket defect and still has done nothing about it. I have all documentation ,and believe this needed to be remedied by Ford. We are talking about thousands of 4. 2 liter 1997 through 1999 engine failures. I love my truck, but will never buy another Ford product.
