Ford F-150 owners have reported 5,815 problems related to power train (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Ford F-150 based on all problems reported for the F-150.
Transmition issues: hard bumping going into gears, loss of power to move the truck, loss of power can happen anytime the transmition seems to shift into neutral causing a dangerous issue when trying to pull out to moving traffic. Stopping at intersections and then the truck wont go forward until there is a hard bump that feels like your getting rear ended. When diving at speeds above 45 the trans is constantly looking for gears. The truck only has 103000 miles on it. Incident occurs 3 out of 5 times I drive the truck.

Transmission is stalling, jerking, skipping gears and slipping. I have talked to the dealership several times about the transmission slamming really hard in 4th and 8th gear. They would tell me it’s just trying to find the right gear to be in, your battery is causing it or it needs to be reprogrammed. There has never been any warning lights. This truck has spent over 4 months in the shop for drive train issues. New rear end, new drive shaft and a vibration that has never gone away.

While taking my daughter to a friend's birthday party, we were traveling at a speed of ~50 miles per hour when the transmission downshifted from 5th or 6th gear directly to first gear for no reason. The back tires locked up when the rpms drastically increased, and the truck went into a skid. I believe my limited experience working on cars gave me the instinct to throw the shifter into neutral while applying the brakes. I was able to gain control of the vehicle prior to it fully going off into the ditch. After researching the issue, it became apparent this was a common problem with the 6r80 transmission that Ford knows about. I read numerous stories of the safety issues owners have had with this 6r80 transmission in the 12th gen f150. I brought the truck to my dealer, and they confirmed it was from the "lead frame" that Ford provided an extended warranty on. I was told the warranty didn't cover my vehicle (10 year/150k mile). This vehicle was purchased from the Ford dealership new in 2013 and has been in the family ever since. It currently only has 65k miles on it and has never had any work done to the transmission expect for a program flash at 26k miles in an attempt to prevent this exact issue. Outside of being disappointed that Ford was not willing to help with the expensive repair, my mind went to the safety aspect of what's going on. I believe Ford made the decision to not classify this as a safety recall to prevent paying for the replacement of the plastic lead frame on all 6r80 transmissions. While I understand this is costly to an auto manufacturer, I can't help but think of what the result of this safety issue would have been if my wife or an unexperienced driver was under control of this vehicle that day. I reached out to the Ford customer service rep and explained my safety concerns. I was told she would file it under safety and that I may or may not get a call. This confirms their lack of concern; hence I'm reaching out to the NHTSA.

The first indication of problems came when I tried to put the truck in gear and I noticed that the reverse light didn't come on and it wouldn't engage into the gear then as I was traveling down a three-lane highway in the middle lane the car started jerking and like it didn't want to go and then I got to a red light and the truck would not move so I was stuck in the central lane but after engaging the gear several times I managed to get the vehicle into a gas station parking lot where I call the dealership after finding out that I had the trouble code that was referred in the recall and the vehicle was towed to duval I mean it was told to hogan forward on atlantic boulevard . Where it's now under inspection.

No check engine light before, during, or after the incident. Pulling on to road in traffic, transmission started slipping, not allowing me to get to speed of traffic. This almost caused a rear end collision. It is absurd to have paid this much money for a vehicle and so many people have this same issue. (cdf drum and valve body). Consumer has to pay $6,000 to $10,000. Ford needs to be held accountable for this garbage they produced. Absolute worst and unsafe issue ever encountered in all my years of owning vehicles. It’s ashamed and sad, I’ll have to continue to drive my vehicle this way because I don't have $10,000 to repair what should be recalled. This transmission has shifted horribly so many times almost creating fatal crashes, it’s a death trap. Where is accountability these days?.

The contact owns a 2013 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving on the expressway at 75 mph, the transmission unexpectedly downshifted and the vehicle decelerated to 10 mph, and the vehicle slid sideways. The contact stated that gauges on the instrument panel were inoperable. There were no warning lights illuminated. Upon research, the contact had associated the failure with NHTSA campaign number: 19v433000 (power train). The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, but was not diagnosed or repaired. The dealer confirmed that the VIN was not included in the recall. The manufacturer was contacted and confirmed that the vehicle did not meet the requirement for customer satisfaction program: 19n01 – transmission molded lead frame coverage extension. The approximate failure mileage was 115,000.
The contact owns a 2018 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle lost motive power. The transmission warning light illuminated, and the message to "see owner’s manual" was displayed. The contact coasted the vehicle to the dealer, who determined that the transmission had failed. The transmission was replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 83,000.
10 speed tremic transmission, the same one covered by NHTSA #24v-208. Transmission hunts for gears, and has dropped from a high gear to first gear without warning. The advisory says that it could drop out of any gear to first gear without warning possibly causing a crash. For some reason, my vehicle with the same transmission and same problems is not covered by the recall.
My transmission is slipping jerking sometimes won't go in gear I have it at the Ford dealership now. It's a 10 speed and it should be in the recall like all the others. It's doing the exact same thing.
I had the oss software recall completed a few months ago. Software fix is suppose to prevent automatic downshifting to 1st gear when traveling in higher gears. I am now having slipping/engine shudder when accelerating in higher gears. More than likely the lead frame will need to be replaced and my independent mechanic has said this should have been the fix initially, not just a software update. (same models from 2011-2013 have had this recall implemented, but the 2014 has not been included for some reason. ).

The electric motors in the hybrid system intermittently fault and fail completely. I get an error saying there's a powertrain/4wd system failure. There's no clear cause. I've had this in for service numerous times. I've paid for a repair that did not resolve it. They had me pay for a repair for a new alternator-generator unit ($1500). When I get this fault, the truck operates only on gas power and does not use any electric motor power. I go from ~21 mpg highway (which is lower than when new) to ~18 mph highway.

Driving on the interstate with the family in the truck. Was going 70 mph and the truck started bucking and loosing power causing me to swerve to gain control and bring the truck to a stop. On the side of the highway I tried to drive to an exit and the truck proceeded to shift from first to 7 and then say 10 and just rev then slam into first over and over. Limped fo a gas station. Fluid level is good. The junk 10 speed transmission almost cause us to wreck on the interstate at a very bust time. Who know what all damage that would have caused.
The contact owns a 2021 Ford F-150. The contact received notifications of NHTSA campaign numbers: 23v896000 (power train), 25v455000 (fuel system, gasoline), and 25v729000 (visibility). The dealer was contacted. However, parts to do the recall repairs were not yet available. The manufacturer was contacted; however, the phone call was dropped five times. The contact had not experienced a failure.

I purchased this vehicle from Ford about 2 months ago and brought it in for service over 4 weeks ago. The service department inspected the hub bolts and declared the vehicle unsafe to drive until the recall is completed due to sheered bolts. Although the recall says the parts are available, that is apparently not accurate. This is a huge safety issue and Ford put my family at risk when they decided to sell me this vehicle with the bolt issue and no parts available to remedy the situation. Ford customer service is telling me 3q2026. Manufacturer recall number23s65 NHTSA recall number23v896.

P072200-68, cmdtc, output shaft sensor circuit no signal. There has reportedly been multiple recalls for the 2011 Ford F-150's 6-speed automatic transmission related to an issue with the molded lead frame that can cause an unexpected downshift into first gear.
Driving at 50 mph, and attempting to accelerate - vehicle lost all "power". Pedal was "to the floor' and no response from the truck. Could not accelerate to get up to interstate speed. Multiple attempts were made, with big hesitations then hard, surging engagements, as truck attempted to shift. More than once the accelerator was applied with no response. Rpms didn't even rev, just nothing from the vehicle. Had to slow down to get the truck to engage into a gear, eventually catching and able to hold 50. Slower acceleration over time and was eventually able to get up to freeway speeds.
. Driving on the interstate cruise control set on 75 all of a sudden, lose power speedometer to 0. Transmission, jerks have to pull over. Get home check the code. Said it was the transmission lead frame, oss sensor. Im lucky I didn't wreck. It's a safety concern, should be a recall.
The contact owns a 2025 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while pulling into the driveway and depressing the brake pedal, the gear shifter independently shifted to park(p), locked, and remained in park(p). The contact turned off and restarted the vehicle, and the vehicle responded as intended. A dealer was contacted. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed, but the diagnostic information was unknown. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 5,330.

Since I've purchased the truck in 2023 I've been receiving in the mail notices about a recall for the rear-axel shaft for my 2022 f150. I am a major proponent of safety and maintenance. Year over year I've attempted to get it fixed at authorized Ford dealerships but I've been told a handful of times that the parts are not available and I'm not getting the appropriate urgency required for an issue of this stature. I am embarking on a big trip and I'm concerned about my safety and the safety of others on the road.
Driving 70 mph on highway. Transmission suddenly downshifted from 6th to 5th. Cruise control turned off. Speedometer went to 0 mph. Airbag warning light came on. Wrench indicator flashed. From this point on, transmission would only use gears 3,4,5. Speedometer continued to read 0. Cruise control remained inoperative and airbag warning light remained on. Wrench indicator turned off after a few minutes. Was able to limp home, but truck had difficulty pulling out from stoplights and stop signs due to not being able to shift below 3rd gear. After shutting off ignition and restarting. Operation returned to normal.
The contact owns a 2022 Ford F-150. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 23v896000 (power train), and the vehicle was taken to the dealer, where an inspection was performed. The contact was then informed that the recall repair needed to be performed; however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The dealer ordered the part. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked in the garage, the contact noticed that oil had leaked onto the ground underneath the vehicle. The vehicle was driven to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the rear axle bolts and rear main seal had failed; however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The vehicle was not repaired and had been at the dealer for two weeks. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 27,000.
The transmission has the potential to shift erratically most recently when crossing a divided highway, trying to get in them median, the truck switched gears, causing the truck to stop blocking oncoming traffic. It was only momentarily and shifted back to the correct gear. It has the potential to hard shift pretty consistently.
The truck suddenly jerks into gear and lurches forward even sometimes after taking foot off the gas. The transmission has issues shifting at low gears, known to Ford, and these present in situations like parking lots and at red lights. It creates a safety hazard when operating at low speeds.
* the transmission regularly misses shifts through the lower gears when accelerating, particularly when the transmission is not yet up to operating temperature. It's as if the transmission goes into neutral, the engine races (tach spools up to 3500/4000 rpm), and then the transmission will slam into the next gear. * I cannot depend on the truck to merge predictably with traffic, and lurching and breaking traction ("burnouts", chirping tires) are distracting at the least, and potentially dangerous and damaging to other driveline components. * the problem has been reproduced and confirmed by an independent transmission shop through a test drive, and by the local Ford dealership's technician / service department. Service records are available. * apart from the above it has not been inspected by other agencies. * there are no other indications either through the vehicle on-board systems or dtcs visible on independent or dealer scanners. There was an indication when I bought the vehicle due to a needed recall / software update. I complied with the update at the dealer and the fault indication cleared itself. I do not know if there is any relation to the current problem. Note that this symptom appears virtually every time the truck is driven, so "date the incident occurred" is "various", although listed as today.
I have a 2018 Ford F-150 supercrew 4x4, with the current odometer at 61,500 miles. What component or system failed or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? the 10r80 10-speed automatic transmission exhibits severe torque converter shudder/vibration. The torque converter and transmission fluid are original to the vehicle and are still installed. Yes, the vehicle and components are available for inspection upon request at any time. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? while driving at highway speeds (40–65 mph) under light throttle, the truck suddenly begins violent shuddering/vibrating that feels like driving over rumble strips. This causes the entire truck to shake, momentarily reduces engine power, and makes steering and braking feel unstable. The shudder is strong enough to blur the rear-view mirror and has occurred in heavy traffic and while towing, creating a serious risk of loss of vehicle control. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? yes. The shudder has been reproduced on multiple test drives by me and is identical to the symptoms described in Ford TSB 22-2219 and earlier tsbs for 2017–2020 F-150 10r80 torque converter shudder. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? not yet formally inspected by Ford for this specific failure, but the symptoms are identical to thousands of documented 10r80 cases that Ford has acknowledged via tsbs and goodwill repairs. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? no check-engine light or transmission warning lamps. The shudder first appeared approximately may 2025 at around 54,000 miles and has steadily worsened. It now occurs on every drive between 20–25 and 40–55 mph.
The 10-speed automatic transmission 10r80 on my 2019 Ford f150, experienced hard and delayed shifting, transmission slippage, noticeable loss of power, warning lights coming on and off. Not shifting into gear at all. Transmissions typically last between 150,000 to 200,000 miles, depending on how maintained and driving habits. With proper care, some transmissions can last up to 300,000 miles or more. F150 cam phaser recall affects models from 2017 to 2020, addressing issues like rattling noises and potential engine problems. I actually received this recall, and had my trucked “fixed” at the sames Ford in corpus christi TX. In late 2021 or early 2022. I was in a Ford dealership in redfield sd, in Jun/July 2025 and asked them to check on any recalls for my 2019 f150. I was told there was no recalls on my truck. My truck has roughly 70k miles on it. There is a service bullet 23-2123 for the transmission, and with that recall that should have fixed my truck, yet now my truck is in the shop with every problem on both the recall and the service bullet. I have to replace my transmission and the cam phasers. I have been in and out of shops trying to get this "fixed" and diagnosed since early Dec 2025.
Transmission failed. Pulling into traffic the transmission failed to shift from first gear into second, instead not going into any gear at all, putting my entire family at risk of being struck by oncoming traffic! engine revved and truck would not move. Then suddenly shifts into third gear jerking violently. Currently in shop for transmission replacement. After a bit of research I found that this is a common issue with the transmission.
Loss of engine coolant resulted in overheating and need to pull off to side of highway. Issue is described in the ssm - 51485 described below 2021-2023 F-150 - 3. 5l powerboost - loss of engine coolant due to external coolant leak at the heat exchanger coolant spigots some 2021-2023 F-150 vehicles equipped with a 3. 5l powerboost engine may experience a loss of engine coolant with possible engine overheat and/or illuminated malfunction indicator (mil). This may be due to a crack in the exhaust heat exchanger coolant spigots on the top of the exhaust heat exchanger. The exhaust heat exchanger coolant spigots are now released and should be serviced in pairs. It is no longer necessary to replace the muffler inlet pipe assembly for this type of concern. Workshop manual, section 309-00d has been updated to include a new service procedure. For claiming, use causal part 18663 and applicable labor operations in section 05 of the service labor time standards (slts) manual. Heat exchanger coolant spigots - nl3z-18663-a (2 req).
Transmission downshift to first gear on the highway.
Transmission would downshift unexpectedly causing me to brake and panic, the tool icon will come on dash, speedometer stops working and backup camaras failed, transmission locked up on highway and caused driveshaft to lock back tires. All around dangerous situation.
The transmission will downshifting and the transmission starts jerking then the engine starts missing for about 30 seconds to a minute but the Ford dealership said it's not showing any codes so it's not happening now I can't get it fixed they didn't think having a vehicle that starts missing for no reason isn't a problem but the torque converter won't throw codes and it's attached directly to the crankshaft so it's messing with the engine to get it to start missing.
