Ford F-350 owners have reported 25 problems related to engine shut off without warning (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
I was 300 miles from home for work for a week. On day 1, while driving on a residential street, I suddenly got a message on the dash that stated "stop safely now". Seconds later, as I was pulling over by the curb, the truck shut itself down and would not start back up. I had to rent a vehicle (being away from home). On day 3, I tried again and it started. I drove it a block away to the place I was staying. Entering the parking lot, I got the message and it shut down again just as fast. At this point I had to arrange transport of my truck back home. $650 and 3 days later, I finally got it home. Started it, ran for a few minutes parked so tried to drive it. Made it about 1000 feet when it shut down again and left me stranded on the highway. Each time it shut itself down, I had to wait a minimum of 1 hour before it would restart. After researching, it seems that my egt13 sensor has gone bad and has to be replaced. Had it shut down while I was on the interstate, the results of this could have been a whole lot worse than the expense of a rental and transport. My research brought to light that this seems to be an ongoing problem with Fords that needs to be addressed and.

Truck was taken to Ford dealer and diagnosed with low pressure fuel pump and high pressure fuel pump out. Prior to this white smoke rolled out of exhaust while driving on highway and engine shut off. Truck waa towed to dealer with above findings. Ford diesel mechanic stated several issues with high and low pressure fuel pumps on these models. Please look into this. Estimated cost is 13,000 dollars to fix.

Exhaust gas temperature sensors fail repeatedly. They have been replaced multiple times. Reductant heater a control performance has now failed as well (all part of the diesel emissions disaster). Aside from constant breakdowns due to emission related items the truck has shutoff abruptly when it encounters any of these problems while driving. Vehicle has shut itself down at highway speeds due to these issues. Vehicle said pull over and within 10 seconds it shut down on the freeway endangering the lives of my family and others on the road. As far as when this has happened it has been multiple times. It has been in the shop on 3 different occasions to replace the same sensors and now other components of the diesel emissions package are failing as well.
I was passing a transport truck and just as I got even with the door of the truck my Ford f350 super duty motor quit, just shut down. A bus was coming in my lane as I was passing, the truck slowed down to let me by but I had no power, no power brakes or power steering. The bus slowed down and I braked enough to get in back of the truck and over to the side of the road. The bus went on by and the truck continued on his way and I tried to start my truck. It fired up and we drove to a tractor supply and bought some diesel oil and when we checked the oil to see how much it was down we were surprised to find it was full. We drove 200 miles home and didn't have another problem. There were no codes on the computer screen in the truck. I haven't taken it to the dealer yet but will to see if their equipment will show a reason.

The egt sensor failed, therefore the engine's computer shut down the motor while I was driving 70 mph on the interstate. The shut down starts by no longer allowing acceleration or to remain at a constant speed, but rather forcing the vehicle to slow down and not allowing the driver to keep engine control. I was in a rural stretch of highway and was able to get to the shoulder of the road without too much trouble, however I would be very concerned if this engine shut down happened while driving on a highway with a lot of traffic. I see that ambulance equipped Ford diesel vehicles have been recalled, but not others. If the motor shuts itself down while driving on a busy highway, this is a big safety concern for myself and other employees.
While driving on the highway at around 55mph, the truck stopped running with no prior warning or any prior issue. After it shut off the truck would crank but not start. Incident was very unsafe as the vehicle shut off at highway speeds.

The contact owns a 2011 Ford F-350 super duty. While driving 60 mph, the engine shut off. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced since the glow plugs fractured within the engine. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The VIN was not available. The approximate failure mileage was 170,000.
The truck would shut off while driving. Nothing will warn the driver when this happens. I have spent more than $1500 at a Ford dealership and it still has the same problem. This is a very dangerous problem because the power steering and brakes will not function when the engine shuts off. I.
The engine light came on today in my 2011 f350 diesel . Dealer says def pump error code. Dealer says no pumps available until 03/15/2014. I think Ford should issue a service bulletin. Dealer says no warranty. Dealer states truck will shut down at any time. This should become a recall issue with the NHTSA. Owners of these trucks tow trailers frequently with lengths in excess of 36'. Having a tow vehicle shut down in traffic at highway speeds is eminently dangerous and will cause fatalities refer to NHTSA campaign number: 13v535000 on similar vehicles.
Due to egt sensor reading high eg temps truck shut off with no warning. Left me stranded in the middle of a busy street until a good samaritan pulled me to the curb. Truck was fully loaded, but not over loaded.
While driving an alarm sounded and the driver display stated " stop safely now" and lost all throttle response. When the vehicle stopped, the engine shut off and it would not crank or restart. It had to be towed from a busy intersection. The fault turned out to be a failed exhaust temperature sensor. It was not even a engine component. It is programming alone that prevented moving the truck to a safe location. What if this was a railroad grade crossing? or had kids in the truck? I can't let my wife drive it now it has 4 of these sensors and only the 1 failed one was changed. Ford has a TSB 13-13-3 on this. It is in its 3rd revision. They know of the problem.
The truck dash display read stop vehicle safely. I immediately looked for a driveway and found on about 50' on the left. I barely made it into the parking lot I had chosen when the engine shut down. I did not make it to a parking spot, but I was off the road. Vehicle was towed to dealer and problem was found with the exhaust temp sensor. It was replaced. I was billed $86. 20 for the work. Aaa paid the tow, but if I hadn't had that, I'd be out that as well.

While towing loaded trailer on 2 lane highway, truck computer flashed message to "stop safely now". Engine shut down and would not restart. Dealer inspection found a faulty exhaust sensor. No other issues with cooling, oil or engine occured. The safety issue is that the new control system software is designed to shut down engine in the event of a faultly sensor in order to protect the vehicle. The system should alert to the issue and allow the human to determine if it is safer to continue driving and risk damage to the vehicle. A control system that is not aware of the road, traffic or environmental conditions should never be allowed to override human requirement to continue driving out of harms way.

Intermittently while driving engine shut off followed by the meters on the dashboard reading zero. Then, vehicle stalled. The consumer put vehicle into neutral and restarted. When this happened before lost control of vehicle. The dealership performed several diagnostic tests, and replaced the pcm ground/engine ground, and wiring going to the pcm. The failure still existed. The consumer invoked the lemon law because the dealership was unable to rectify the failure. Consumer advised that the engine stalled and resulted in the vehicle leaving the roadway. The vehicle entered the front yard of home and damaged the lawn. There were no injuries or damage to the vehicle.
Vehicles engine will shut off when coasting down grades loosing steering and brakes. Problem was in my 1996 power stroke diesel Ford truck that was bought back. Consumer was given newer 1997 truck with same problems and now 4 years later, dealer is still working on problem. Truck is dangerous and I recently lost control of vehicle 4 times running off road twice. When vehicle shuts off I need to put in neutral shut-off key then restart and put in gear. This is normally when you are going down grade and reaching speeds of 80-90mph. Consumer recently broke off end of shift lever in a panic situation down shifting to low along with indenting steering wheel from white knuckles trying to stop vehicle when consumer was unable return to neutral. Consumer have found other owners of this vehicle with same problem. Consumer notified NHTSA in 96 and 97, but received no response. This is a dangerous situation and must be corrected.
