Consumer suffered sever pain in neck and back. Expert's automotive report from nextech evaluated that vehicle has execessive effort required to turn steering wheel. Condition occurs when the engine is at idle speed, with accessories operating and vehicle is in gear, forward or reverse. Problem appeared to lessen when engine's rpm increased. Also, the stalling of the vehicle was caused by a fault in the power steering system.

16 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 2000 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 11/25/2001

Steering on my truck was fine for the fifst 35,000 miles and then lost all power steering when stopped with foot on brake or off the brake. I took the truck in to the Ford dealor and was told this is a normal way for this system to work and live with it,I called Ford moter company and they said the same thing. I feel this is a saftey problem as when off road you cant get the truck to turn if there is adverse weather conditions and you must try to turn at low speed or no speed. If it is icy on the road or even on dry pavement if you apply the brakes and try to stear out of a skid say to avoid a crash you cant get the truck to turn due to your foot on the brake. You cant turn in shopping center parking lots to get into parking spaces due to the steering problem. And shame on Ford for selling these trucks that they know have this situation (bulliton 15446) and not telling the consumer that this is a problem with thesuper duty f-series and the excursion and leading you to believe that the truck will function as weel at 5 miles as it will at 40,000 miles. They should be made to fix this problem and to disclose the factory bulliton 15446 to all consumers looking at there product as it affects the drive ability and resale value of the truck.

17 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 1999 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 11/14/2001

I was on an internet site called Ford-diesel. Com and a few guys there reported a problem with their steering locking up when applying the brakes hard. One guy even reported that he was unable to steer his truck when he was hit from behind and had to brake hard to get control of his truck. I decided to do a little test on my truck to see if my truck had the same problem. I applied my brakes hard at about 55 mph and tried to steer and sure enough the steering wheel was locked up. . 18 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 2001 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 09/07/2001

After multiple attempts to repair a drift in the steering, Ford has told me they are aware of the problem and that currently there is no fix. This problem could likely result in an accident as the truck will drift the moment the steering wheel is released. I had originally been told by the service manager at my dealership that this was the way the truck was designed to respond. Now finally they admit there is a problem. Keeping constant pressure on the steering wheel causes me to suffer from pain in my arm after a long driving trip. It also causes great fatigue and I am afraid to let anyone else drive the vehicle.

19 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 2001 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 08/21/2001

Danger!!! when pressing on the brake pedal there is a loss of power steering and as a result the driver is unable to turn the steering wheel. This is especially dangerous in an emergency situation where a driver maybe required to step on the brakes and turn to avoid an oncoming car. From reading the Ford-diesel website this is a problem that has been identified both to Ford and NHTSA but there has been no action taken by either parties. Ford tells their customers that this is normal. Please don't wait for someone to get hurt and take immediate corrective action. This is a serious design flaw which is a sitting time bomb and as dangerous as having bad tires. Because every Ford truck has this problem it does not give Ford the right to say it is normal and their is nothing wrong. I will await a response from you before going to the Ford dealer. Thankyou.

20 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 2001 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 08/01/2001

I have noticed a problem with steering control when driving over rough roads. . . Like railroad tracks. The steering will intermittently freeze up and it feels like the wheel bounce pulses thru the steering system when doing so. My vehicle also has managed to chew up my front tires within less than 30,000 miles. I find this terrible. I have chatted online w/ many others who had experienced the same tire wear. The tires in question are general grabber aw's. At this point I don't believe it is the tires that were defective. A friend with a similar dump-plow truck had a steering stabilizer on his while mine did not have one on as standard. I really felt it should have had one. It now does! so, I've since had the front end realigned and had two new grabber tr's put on since I was told by a Ford dealer they no longer were making the others. I don't know how long these will last? I feel Ford should have made it right to the owners as this was clearly a defective steering . To exacerbate the problem, I have those shiny aluminum rims that do not allow owners to rotate their tires with out/ breaking them down. This was clearly a goof on Ford's part for not making allowances for this.

21 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 2000 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 07/06/2001

Tire failed on asphalt, no load, no warning. Total separation , only bead the tire tread left. No road hazard at time. Same as two previous firestones tires, not the same type or year. Electrical system: diesel would die out for a few seconds, then came back on by itself. Loss of steering and all power during lost power or curves and hills. Ford reprogrammed computer after several visits there.

22 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 2001 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 07/01/2001

While setting still without brakes you can not turn the steering wheel at all, and sometimes when the truck is cold there is no power steering at all. This is different to the other problem with while on the brakes moving slowly you can not turn the steering wheel untill you start to move alittle faster. All of this is a real problem because you do not know when you can turn or not .

23 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 1997 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 06/24/2001

Power steering was lost when my hydraulic pressure hose was blown out of the fitting that threads into the power steering pump. The local Ford dealer parts department had seen so many of these hoses replaced that the employee at the counter knew what type of vehicle it went on without asking any questions. He was also able to retrieve the new hose from the warehouse without consulting a computer for a part number or storage location. This tells me (and he eventually confirmed) that these hose fittings have been failing regularly. The new hose has the same fitting design but it also has a tag which clearly states, "do not exceed 20 ftlbs torque". The parts guy was emphatic that I follow this torque specification. I will note the fitting design is such that excessive torque could damage an internal clip which seals and holds the hose tube to the fitting. I believe there is a good chance these fittings were over-torqued at the factory and is the reason for failure. Note that my fitting failed at a low speed in a remote setting and nobody was injured - the outcome could have been very different had it failed while turning through a busy intersection.

26 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 1999 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 11/09/2000

The u-bolts failed, and the axel dropped down. We heard a "thud" , and felt a dropping sensation. The steering immediatley became inoperable, and the truck crashed into several bales of hay. The driver's side door was damaged. When I contacted parker Toyota, they claimed my extended warranty did not cover the axel. I then paid for the repairs out of pocket. Later the same day, I pulled a VIN history on the vehicle, and found that the odometer had been rolled back. When we purchased the truck, we were told that it was a trade in from a guy that bought it at parker Ford, and traded it in to parker Toyota. The true story (verifed by Ford motors), was that the truck came out of terrace, bc. It went to auction in may 2000, where the odometer was converted from km to us miles. They have records that it went in to the odometer shop with 68,000 km, and came out with 33,100 us miles. This is a mistake of nearly 10,000 miles. Parker Toyota admits that they are at fault for the odometer fraud, but refuses to do anything about it. We are filing suit against parker Toyota for fraud.

27 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 2001 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 11/01/2000

Steering does not work while sitting still with brakes depressed. Ford says it's normal.

28 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 2000 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 09/29/2000

Power steering gets stiff and/or goes out (does not work) when brake is applied while I am driving and/or at a stand still. At times the steering locks up when brake is applied and then comes back gradualy. The turn signal will not stay on while I am driving and will not allow me to turn on if my steering wheel is slightly turned.

29 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 2000 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 08/23/2000

When applying brakes hard, the power steering goes out. Took vehicle to dealer twice, dealer said it met specifications. Consumer states steering is getting harder to steer.

31 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 2000 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 06/01/2000

Power steering locks up when applying brakes. Dealer first said that it was normal for vehicle. Ford later admitted power steering and power brakes were linked to same booster. When applying brake it takes away from power steering and it locks up. There is no remedy at this time.

33 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 1999 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 05/01/2000

Clutch did not slip at all. Was in 5th and slowing for an exit to 4th. Clutch would not engage to 4th, towed to dealer. Told springs failed and had been failing a long time. Also informed that dealer has had frequent problems and Ford has redesigned clutch assembly three times. Power steering will just go out usually in a turn. Eems to happen when engine is hot or running over hour or so.

34 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 2000 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 01/20/2000

When the truck is placed under hard braking conditions, it loses power steering and becomes very hard to steer and control. This is very evident when hauling cargo or pulling a trailer. The problem has been confirmed by two Ford dealers, but Ford will not authorize any repairs because they say this is a normal condition. I don't know if my truck is bad or if all F-350 have this problem. The loss of steering will cause an accident very soon. The only reason a person would by a truck of this size is to haul cargo or pull trailers. Like I said, Ford has been notified by two dealers about this problem, but they will not do anything to fix it. Thanks.
