40 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 1999 Ford F-350

When vehicle brakes are applied, steering becomes difficult. Turning steering wheel quickly, causes steering wheel to momentarily lock up. A second and related problem is an excessively soft suspension system. When a quick turn is required, these two problems mentioned here, in my opinion and experiences, combined, create a potentially dangerous situation.

45 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 2000 Ford F-350

Loss of power steering at low speed when applying the brakes. This makes it impossible to steer the truck when trying to brake and steer at the same time. My wife is not strong enough to steer the truck and I am just able to move the steering wheel slightly.

46 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 2000 Ford F-350

A loss of power assist in steering will occur when driving in slow speeds less than 20 mph and applying brakes.

47 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 2000 Ford F-350

Power steering cuts out when vehicle is moving slowly and brakes are applied. Ford dealed service manager said that Ford is aware of this condition and there is nothing that they can do about it. This defect possibly affects 1999 model year. Service manager encouraged me to complain to NHTSA. He said that if enough people complained, then Ford would have to do something about this defect.

48 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 2000 Ford F-350

Power steering assist goes away when applying brakes. Very annoying, and if I ever had to stomp the brake pedal at speed and need to swerve, turn, etc. I believe it could potentially be fatal to someone. From the information I have read this is a pretty widespread problem with these trucks and needs to be corrected. They are much too big and heavy to not be able to steer correctly.

49 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 1999 Ford F-350

Lost control and steering. A major crash with fatality and serious injuries.

50 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 2000 Ford F-350

Lose power steering assist at low speeds with brakes on. Difficult to steer and have come close to hitting other vehicles.

51 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 1999 Ford F-350

Loss of power steering occurs when backing up to a trailer and braking at the same time. This has occurred since the truck was purchased new.

52 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 2000 Ford F-350

Steering has no power assist when stopped and brakes are applied. Vehicle is difficlut to park when on an incline due to inability to turn wheel when brakes are applied. I also have concern about how the the vehicle will respond in an emergency stop situation if the wheel cannot be turned when brakes are applied hard. With this system I may be able to stomp and stay but not sure if I will be able to steer. Ihave taken truck to dealer for this condition but was referred to Ford special service message #12995 and told the condition was normal.

53 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 1997 Ford F-350

There is a bolt that comes loose, causing power steering to go completely out. This has happened twice. Dealer replaced part, and problem has reoccurred.

54 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 2000 Ford F-350

Ford says this condition of power assist loss on steering is normal, can not turn steering wheel when brake is applied and truck is not moving. Steering very difficult when brake not applied.

55 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 2001 Ford F-350

While driving at slow speed and without warning when applying brakes power steering goes out, resulting in loss of control.

56 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 2001 Ford F-350

With brakes applied steering can not be turned. Can not parellel park, make a u-turn,back up boat or camper easily,I am afraid that if I was driving and had to slam on the brakes I would be unable to steer the vehicle due to not being able to turn the steering wheel. Ford has told me they know about it but there is nothing they can do to fix it. Also steering seems very sloppy and loose. Steering wheel moves when going over bumps ( left to right).

57 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 2001 Ford F-350

Unsafe!! steering does not work with brakes applied. Steering binds up and can not be turned when brakes are on. Can't parallel park, make u-turn, or back up for boat or camper. Steering will not turn in skid. Steering is sloppy and truck wanders from side to side on road. Bumps and ruts throw truck dangerously from side to side. Steering does not center itself. It is a constant battle to keep the truck going straight. Constantly correcting from left to right.
