1 Steering Gear Box Shaft Pitman problem of the 2017 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 02/04/2020

When traveling at speeds above 55mph, if the truck encounters any rough or uneven pavement such as a bridge expansion joint, the steering wheel will oscillate violently making it impossible to control the vehicle. On two occasions this has caused my vehicle to cross the center line before I was able to reduce speed and stop the oscillation. Had there been oncoming traffic, we would have had a collision. I am told by the local dealer that Ford is working on a known issue with the steering dampener along with other steering components such as the pitman arm. Ford knows they have a major issue here and I am not the only one who has reported the so called "death wobble. " I have driven heavy duty pickup trucks for over 20 years and I have never experienced something so dangerous and unpredictable as this. This is by far a greater danger than the two recalls; one for the tailgate opening, and one for the seat belt pretensioner fire risk that I have received so far. If this issue has not caused any fatalities in the past, I would be very surprised.

2 Steering Gear Box Shaft Pitman problem of the 2017 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 04/12/2019

Front tires oscillate back and forth when hitting potholes at highway speeds above 50mph, bridge overpasses anything that is rough. Known as the death wobble for most people. Truck becomes out of control shaking back and forth, having to slow the truck down almost to a stop. This issue started around 37k miles and has just gotten worse. Now the dealer says my track bar with ball joint is ruined, steering stabalizer, 2 drag links 1 at passenger knuckle and 1 at the pitman arm. This repair is close to $1,000.

3 Steering Gear Box Shaft Pitman problem of the 2002 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 06/24/2014

The tie rod end at the pitman arm sheared off suddenly at the point where the ball meets the shaft of the tie rod causing a complete loss of steering control. This is not a wear point and is not something that could have been inspected since it is covered with a rubber boot, the steel looks as if it fatigued over time leading to the sudden failure. Luckily this occurred in a parking lot, had it happened on the highway someone else would have possibly been writing this.

5 Steering Gear Box Shaft Pitman problem of the 2004 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 07/24/2012

I was driving down the interstate with my 2004 F-350 dually with my dump trailer on the back. I was headed down a slight hill when the steering wheel started to shake. The front wheels started to move back and forth from left to right and right to left very fast but in short strokes. The shaking and the strokes began to get longer so the wheels were turning more and more each time the wheels turned back and forth. . The shaft that comes of of the steering box that goes to the pitman arm sheared in half. This caused me to loose control of the truck because I had no steering. When I hit the brakes the wheels locked completely right, causing me to go off the highway, I hit a bank on the side of the highway head on, then the trailer pulled me around 180 degrees and I rolled the truck and trailer.

6 Steering Gear Box Shaft Pitman problem of the 2005 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 11/15/2010

I have a 2005 f350 with a 4 inch lift. I have experienced the "Ford death wobble" 4 times in the last week. 3 times it was @ ~40 mph and 1 time it was at 75. Scared me to death. My brakes don't work when it happens and I have to coast to get it to stop. I had the shocks replaced (72k on truck) so the 1st shop I went to told me that would fix it. No such luck. . . I picked it up and right after it did it again. I just took it to a company who wants $700 to replace the pitman arm and gear box. I have not done this yet. Then I had a local 4x4 guy tell me that I need to replace the steering stabilizer shock and put a 2nd one on it. I have already spent $500 on shocks. The stabilizers will be $150. No one has a clear answer of what the issue is but they want me to keep spending $ on trying to figure it out. I talked to Ford and they seem to be like I have no idea what I am talking about. There is a guy online who sells an aftermarket stabilizer system for ~$900 but I think Ford should fix it this problem since its a design issue. Please help me. I don't have a lot of money to keep troubleshooting this. Ford should be held responsible. They say there is no recall on this issue but if you go out on the web, many other owners of my truck and the years and models around it are describing the same issue. I am scared to drive it. The shaking is extremely violent and I am lucky that the truck has been on a straightaway with no cars around me each time its happened. . . . Otherwise I could have flipped it and killed myself or someone else or someone dear to you. . . Please look into this and see the stories on the web about people who have injured themselves and others due to this problem. Something has to be done.

8 Steering Gear Box Shaft Pitman problem of the 1999 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 05/18/2003

I have had 2 steering gear boxes break on my truck. The first was when my truck was hit while parked. The individual hit the front of my vehicle and dented in the front bumper and fender. It was not until we went to load the truck on the wrecker that we discovered the broken box. The second time I was driving down the road and the person in front of me slammed on their brakes to avoid an individual making a turn in front of them. I jerked my wheel to the left to go over the curb and avoid the accident but when my tires hit the curb it sheared of the pitman arm right below the steering gearbox which resulted in me losing my steering. I then plowed into the vehicle infront of me with no way to avoid them. The curb was not a very big one and it worries me that this important part broke so easy.
