37 Steering problem of the 2014 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 09/01/2024

On [xxx] we were traveling westbound on [xxx] from keenesburg, CO in our 2014 Ford F-350 super duty at roughly 75mph. We were in the right lane and went over a bump in the road and as soon as we did, the steering wheel and the entire front end of the truck started shaking violently. We pulled onto the shoulder of the highway to slow down/stop. Once the truck stopped shaking, we pulled back into the right lane from the shoulder and shortly before the [xxx] exit we hit another bump in the road and the steering wheel as well as the front end of the truck began violently shaking. We again moved over to the shoulder of the highway, slowing down until we were at a full stop. At that point we decided we weren't going to go to our destination and exited the highway at the [xxx] exit. 're not entirely sure what component or system failed but believe it to be related to the steering or suspension and yes it is available for inspection. Safety was at risk due to the high rate of speed we were traveling when this happened and without any warning whatsoever. Had we not been able to move onto the shoulder to stop the vehicle, who knows what could've happened. Thankfully, there were not a lot of other vehicles on the road both times this occurred. Are hesitant to operate the truck so it has not yet been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center. *again, we are hesitant to operate the truck so it has not been inspected by anyone yet. , there were no warnings at all. No warning lamps, no messages, nothing. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

38 Steering problem of the 2020 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 08/22/2024

The steering column has failed causing steering wheel separation from the steering column. The issue happened simply driving down the road almost causing a loss of control of the vehicle. Vehicle has been at a local dealership currently and they are stating there is no active recall for this model year vehicle and Ford is not responsible for repairs due to being outside of my warranty by approx. 2k miles. It is open knowledge that the same issue is happening on newer model year vehicles with a recall in effect.

39 Steering problem of the 2017 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 08/14/2024

When towing a fifth wheel trailer and going down a hill the vehicle went into an oscillation that caused sever wobbling of the front end almost causing me to lose control of the vehicle that was towing the trailer. This was the most frightening thing I have ever experienced in my life. After doing some research Ford motor company knows about this issue and has yet to recall this problem it is also known as the death wobble. Is it actually going to take someone's death to see something happen about this well know issue, I certainly hope not and I hope the NHTSA will do something to force Ford motor company to correct this issue before someone does die from the "death wobble".

40 Steering problem of the 2022 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 08/05/2024

Highway travel at approx 65mph, experienced a sudden violent uncontrollable steering wheel movement known as a death wobble. Uncontrollable steering wheel movement increased resulting in a reactionary driver hard breaking application to try and regain control of the vehicle steering without checking rear view mirror for other motorists close behind. Speed dropped to approx 30-35mph before regaining control of steering. Fortunately no vehicles were following close behind or the affected vehicle and other highway occupants may have resulted in a crash caused by the uncontrollable vehicle and sudden breaking. Components/systems involved include front suspension/steering. Dealer #1 stated vehicle was inspected and found no abnormal wear or damage, all specs within limits. Dealer #2 found steering damper depleted requiring replacement (warranty covered), and front end alignment found out of specifications requiring addition parts installed at owner cost ($787), all while under warranty at approx 19000mi at time of occurrence. No prior symptoms or indications. One owner/driver vehicle since new. Incident occurred without warning and immediate unsafe driving conditions occured. Trip continued for approx 1000mi without further incident until inspected by 2 Ford dealerships until some sort of corrective action applied.

41 Steering problem of the 2019 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 08/05/2024

My truck has only 13000 miles on it. We were going on vacation pulling our camper. I was doing about 63 mph when we hit a bump in the interstate and the truck started violently shaking out of control. They cal it the death wobble. After doing some research it seams to be a very common problem that Ford will not fully address. They put a bandage over a serious issue. They put me, my family and others in very serious danger. It took everything I had to keep us from going in the ditch. A vehicle with only 13000 miles on it should not experience something like this.

42 Steering problem of the 2015 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 08/01/2024

Truck experienced death wobble at posted speed limit and steering could not be controlled until I could slow vehicle. Earlier the death wobble happened and took it to the Ford dealer and the service reported nothing wrong. I replaced the tie rods steering damper installed new shocks and springs and cannot be corrected.

43 Steering problem of the 2015 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 07/27/2024

I have experienced what is called the Ford death wobble on multiple occasions however yesterday it happened 3 different times while traveling with my 2 year old nephew and elderly mother. It terrified both as it almost caused an accident yesterday. This is not acceptable to pay $53 thousand for a vehicle that you feel unsafe to drive!.

44 Steering problem of the 2009 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 07/17/2024

When I hit a bump at between 55 and up, the truck develops a death wobble even after having all the steering components, including ball joints, tie, rod ends, stabilizer, bar, shocks, replaced.

45 Steering problem of the 2024 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 07/12/2024

It is hard to explain to people and some people might not fully understand what they are even feeling if they are not in tune to how the steering system works normally vs with some type of assist. I don't use the lane keeping assist (button on steering wheel) because it is not comfortable for me where the truck wants to be in relation to the lane. But even with lane keep assist off I could feel different amounts of "intervention" occurring. First I described it as the input force required to turn the steering wheel either direction was different. Like it would be super easy to turn right but took lots of effort to turn left. So my dealer also replaced the steering assist motor. Then I felt like the issue just inverted and was easy to turn left but hard to turn right. But as I have already put almost 7,000 miles on it I have become more in tune to what is happening. It is most affected on roads with a high crown and it is attempting to counteract the crown in the road but is not quick with making adjustments so if you are in the far left lane with a crown to the left and you change lanes to the center lane with no crown it will have a heavy pull to the right for about 30 seconds or more then can sometimes level itself back out but it is super tiring to drive this truck on the road for long periods of time. But yesterday I had a breakthrough. I went into the center radio screen under the driver assistance, in pre-collision assist and turned off the evasive steering assist. Bam fixed there is no pulling or pushing and the input force required to turn left and right is equal. So this did at least confirm the issue is some level of intervention is happening that should not be.

46 Steering problem of the 2016 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 07/11/2024

We purchased this truck as a certified used vehicle in January of 2019. In September of 2023 we started experiencing a death wobble every time we try and take the truck over 55 mph. We have taken the truck to the Ford dealership six different times to try and fix the issue, and Ford can not figure out the cause of the wobble. Currently the truck has been in the shop at Ford for almost 2 months continuously with them trying to figure out what is causing the issue.

47 Steering problem of the 2012 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 07/02/2024

Twice in the last 60 days while driving on the interstate, once at 75mph and this last time at 60mph my Ford f350 has gone into violent shaking, so much so that I was barely able to contain it. I was able to force it off the road and come to a stop. I had to sit there for several minutes then decided to drive slowly to the off ramp. I was able to drive without any wobble and get off the interstate. I took it the first time to lynn wood automotive in layton, they kept it for several days and found nothing. The second time I took it to ed kennely Ford service. A few of the service writers gathered around as I explained what happened then were nodding there heads and smiling indicating that they had seen is happen several times. I made an appointment next week on July 11th 7:30 am. This was a very dangerous situation and one that I feel very lucky to have gotten it off the road. This should be a definite recall as lives are being put to risk.

48 Steering problem of the 2019 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 06/30/2024

In June 2024, I experienced serious sustained steering wheel oscillation to the point of having to stop the vehicle while traveling over 70 mph to regain control before proceeding on my way. I scheduled an appointment with my dealer (woody anderson Ford, huntsville, al) after July 4th weekend and was assigned an appointment date of August 9, 2024 at 10:00am. In may 2024, after traveling about 47 mph over a semi-diagonal railroad tracks on level pavement, the steering became violent but was recoverable after reducing speed to under 20 mph. This was the second instance. In March 2024, after transitioning across a section of highway in town at about +/- 45 mph, which the highway had appeared to have been poorly repaired my steering began to oscillate but I was able to recover with no concern. This was the first instance.

50 Steering problem of the 2016 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 06/22/2024

For years my truck starts vibrating excessively, shaking the entire vehicle when driving over certain sections of roadway or bumps. Sometimes, my steering is difficult to maintain when this happens. This occurs at speeds around 50 mph+. I always assumed it was just a bad road section and never pursued any repair as I didn't think it was a truck issue. Recently, I have come across some articles, that described my exact situation/condition when driving my truck. It makes me have to slow way down below the speed limit for the violent shaking to stop. Sometimes, I though it was just my stiff suspension on bad roads. It is being called the Ford death wobble and affects many Ford super duty trucks. Who knows what other components of my truck have been unduly affected due to this manufacturer's safety issue with my truck and that appears to be a situation that occurs often with other Ford super duty trucks. I'm concerned one day it will cause me to lose control and crash or crash into another vehicle. To my knowledge Ford has not issued any recall's regarding these safety problems. My truck has been to the Ford shops many times but nothing addressed regarding this condition. It has occurred so many times, I can not even count, well over hundreds of times over 8 years. The most recent time it occurred was about two weeks ago on [xxx] in colorado springs. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

51 Steering problem of the 2022 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 05/23/2024

When I drive over 75 miles per hour my steering wheel starts to wobble violently.

52 Steering problem of the 2019 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 05/21/2024

My vehicle constantly experiences the death wobble meaning front end suspension experiences violent shaking making it difficult to stay the course and won't stop till vehicle comes to a lower speed but imagine I'm going 75 it takes along time to slow down and very scary.

53 Steering problem of the 2020 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 05/03/2024

Steering shaft came apart causing the vehicle to go out of control. Yes inspection is available. Vehicle went into opposing traffic and hit barrier on opposite side of road. Vehicle was inspected by no warning lamp.

54 Steering problem of the 2014 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 04/16/2024

I was driving along the freeway at 65 miles as an hour when my car went into a violent death wobble. I thought I might’ve blown a tire or something. I honestly can’t believe I didn’t hit any cars on the freeway while I was pulling off when I slowed down to about 30 miles an hour it stopped, I immediately went to the gas station and could not find anything wrong. I started driving down the side street and it started doing it again at about 50 miles an hour. It was extremely violent and dangerous. There were no warning lights or anything. I’ve looked online and this has been an ongoing problem for Ford trucks. I called the dealer and I’m bringing it in to them tomorrow. They are aware of the problem. How this is not a recall is beyond my imagination. It’s extremely dangerous.

55 Steering problem of the 2018 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 04/16/2024

Violent front end shimmy (death wobble) at highway speeds. Seems to be worsening. Happened in interstate traffic near atlanta georgia. Extreme concern as I was among multiple vehicles with many behind me as well, all moving at highway speeds. I could not stop the problem until I had slowed to about 20 miles per hour.

56 Steering problem of the 2020 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 04/05/2024

Truck has death wobble.

57 Steering problem of the 2017 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 03/31/2024

At differing speeds the truck experienced the "death wobble" causing the front end of the vehicle to shake uncontrollably. This happened 2 times before I had the tie rod ends replaced and several times afterward. You have to almost stop the vehicle to get the shaking to go away. It is a tremendous safety risk and could cause an accident due to the shaking or due to needing to slow almost to a stop - which could cause a rear end collision. This is a common problem with Ford f250 and f350 trucks. I had my mechanic inspect all the front end parts and he recommended replacing the tie rods and track bar. No warning lamps or other symptoms. The issue happened out of the blue.

58 Steering problem of the 2019 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 03/27/2024

While on a ramp to merge onto a highway, slightly downhill, a small ripple in the pavement joint caused the front wheels and steering wheel to shake violently and nearly lost control of the vehicle. Was traveling at approximately 40-50mph and could not steer the truck and the out of control shaking did not stop until I was able to slow to maybe 5-10mph. I was towing a trailer and if I had not been on a wide roadway late at night, going straight with little traffic around me, it's very likely I would have had a serious accident. The truck has 40,000 miles on it and tires etc are in good condition as this is a federal government owned and maintained vehicle. I see no recalls or service bulletins for the VIN, but found hundreds of complaints online of the exact situation and referred to as out of control "death wobble". This is a serious issue and people will very likely be in serious and fatal accidents if not already.

59 Steering problem of the 2016 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 03/22/2024

I have had a recurring problem with the so-called "death wobble" whereby the vehicle starts to shake violently when hitting certain bumps above about 50 mph and cannot be brought back under control without completely coming to a stop. I've had the front end components, including tie rods, stabilizers, drag link, etc completely replaced three times and within a year of normal driving it comes back. It has always been repaired at a Ford service center. It happens without warning, though I've learned now how the vehicle feels when the front end starts getting loose so I can have it repaired before it becomes dangerous.

60 Steering problem of the 2018 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 03/19/2024

Vehicle steering began shuddering violently while driving at around 50mph. I had to slow to around 25mph to get the shuddering to stop. It happened again around 50mph any time I hit a bump or pothole. At this point the vehicle is unable to be driven at highway speeds.

61 Steering problem of the 2018 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 03/06/2024

I was changing lanes at 75 mph on the interstate in chicago and hit a bump in the road. The steering wheel and the truck started shaking violently (death wobble). The only way that I could get it to stop was to come to a complete stop. Luckily there wasn't a ton of traffic and I was able to change lanes easily. I was on my way home with 300 miles of travel left. This happened again 2 more times on the way home. I had to travel at a reduced rate of speed to try and keep the issue from happening again. Luckily I had just dropped of my 42ft 5th wheel camper. If this had happened while pulling my camper I don't think I would of been able to control the vehicle. I have ordered $1,000 of aftermarket and replacement parts to fix the issue . I will not drive the vehicle again until I have this repaired.

62 Steering problem of the 2005 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 02/29/2024

Twice today, traveling at 75mph on highway I-35 (northbound and then several hours later southbound) just north of ardmore ok, I experienced a violent shaking of the steering wheel/front wheel shimmy. The vehicle was difficult to control due to the violent shaking that did not stop until the vehicle slowed to approximately 20mph. Once the shaking stopped the vehicle was okay to drive.

63 Steering problem of the 2012 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 02/12/2024

The contact owns a 2012 Ford F-350. The contact stated that while driving approximately 45-50 mph, the vehicle drove over a bump and experienced the death wobble. The contact pulled over and restarted the vehicle. The contact was able to drive to the residence. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the tie rods and shock absorber needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but informed the contact that there was no recall associated with the VIN. The contact related the failure to technical service bulletin: 05upf250sw (05-16 Ford f250 / f350 4wd vehicles with steering wheel oscillation); however, the vehicle was not covered under the TSB. The failure mileage was approximately 98,000.

64 Steering problem of the 2020 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 02/12/2024

Extreame front-end vibration ("aka" death-wobble as described for other f250 and f350 pickups on google). Driving 60mph on 65mph limit highway. Small bump on road. Truck starts severe vibrations from the front end. No steering control. Slight drift into left lane. Another car in the lane left to me had to break to avoid me. Vibration would not stop until I applied brakes and the truck speed was 30mph. Both the loss of steering, and the necessary reduction in speed was extreamly dangerous. Upon searching the internet it appears this is a common problem with Ford f250 and f350 trucks that neither the NHTSA nor Ford has/is addressing.

65 Steering problem of the 2019 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 02/10/2024

Sevier uncontrollable shaking of the front wheels. I had to slow down to about 10 miles an hour on the freeway, people has to swerve to avoid me. It has happened 4 times in the last 3,000 miles. The date below is the most recent time it happened. I'll be taking it to the Ford dealership.

66 Steering problem of the 2014 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 02/07/2024

My truck has developed the death wobble and I have down everything to remedy this situation and no one has been able to get this very scary problem fixed.

67 Steering problem of the 2022 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 01/28/2024

Driving down the highway, I noticed my steering wheel was loose. As I continued driving the steering wheel became more loose. It was difficult to steer, I had to hold the steering wheel tight to the column in order to keep control. I was 2 miles from home when it became this bad. I slowed downand was able to manuever into the driveway. I had the truck towed to caskinette Ford in carthage, NY. I am awaiting information on what part failed and allowed the steering wheel to become loose. I am lucky I was able to maintain the vehicle in the lane and was not towing at this time. I could have easily lost control and been in a serious situation with myself, my family, and other vehicles on the roadway. There were no warning lamps of any kind. There was no symptom prior to failure, it just happened going down the road.

68 Steering problem of the 2011 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 01/24/2024

Within a span of 30 min. I experienced 3 uncontrollable steering oscillations also known as the "death wobble. " the dw experienced, the speeds were around 50 miles per hour. Less than that, the aforementioned oscillations were not experienced. Reason for the 30 min time frame was due to making it back home from the first occurrence. First oscillation was on smooth road, the other two were on less than smooth roads.

69 Steering problem of the 2019 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 01/20/2024

Steering stabilizer or dampener is not functioning. Experiencing death wobble on freeway every 2 miles when driven over 50. Have reported before and Ford refused to fix it because they couldn’t repeat it. The stabilizer on this truck has been replaced three times not by Ford.

70 Steering problem of the 2015 Ford F-350

Failure Date: 01/18/2024

Front end suspension has on several occasions began to violently shake. It appears that the driver side front wheel begins to bounce rapidly after hitting large or small defects within the road surface. This occurs only when driving on highway type roads where posted speeds typically exceed 55. (texas has some posted speeds of 80 mph and I drive this area often) numerous times during this occurrence I have had little to no control of my truck's direction of travel. The only solution to date that has worked is to slow down to a near stop while still in the middle of high speed traffic. When this "death wobble" occurs, I have zero control of my vehicle as far as steering is concerned. We no longer allow our children to ride in the truck with us as this has become a dangerous driving environment. Additionally the violence of this wobble aggravates an pre-existing medical issue within my neck and head. (veteran with (2) tbi's and severe nerve damage in my neck) the dealership has confirmed the issue and suggested I replace the front suspension and my tires. (my tires still had 20k+ miles left on them) the vehicle has been taken to a dealer for the vast majority of it's service and maintenance. I have mentioned the "death wobble" on several occasions' and even agreed to have the entire front end suspension along with all four tires be replaced. This seemed to have fixed the issue in the short term, but it has returned with considerably more violent shaking than before. I asked the dealer to repair again, but they refused without additional payments, as the repair is now more than 90 days old. No warnings are given prior to this violent shaking other than the initial jolt. Even with a warning, traveling at 60-75 mph along with confined traffic the chances of becoming involved in a possible life-threatening accident become extremely high.
