Tailgate Problems of Ford F-350 - part 2

A Ford truck tailgate recall has satisfied federal safety regulators who opened an investigation in October 2018 following complaints about electric tailgates that suddenly opened. The investigation opened by the national highway traffic safety administration (NHTSA) included electric tailgate problems in 2017-2019 Ford f-250, F-350 and f-450 super duty trucks. " this recall has not fixed this issue and the tailgate continues to open and is a safety issue. We have attempted to work with Ford motor company legal division for compensation and a solution to this but they will not cooperate. Until NHTSA recognize the recall is a failure, owners will continue to be a safety problem on our highways. When did this happen? multiple times! it has been to 5 dealerships trying to resolve this recall! the date listed below is the date we purchased our truck.

We are experiencing numerous uncommanded tailgate drops while the vehicle is in motion or just running. We recently were towing our 5th wheel trailer and when we pulled into fuel up our tailgate dropped and damaged both the truck's tailgate (top molding) and put a hole in the front compartment door of the fifth wheel. (pictures provided). We have taken the truck into two Ford dealerships and they have not been able to duplicate or diagnose the problem and per Ford motor company, they have stopped trying to diagnose the problem. On another day, we experienced three different uncommanded tailgate drops while we were towing our boat. One time, my husband was backing the truck and I was standing alongside the truck and the tailgate dropped uncommanded.

Tl the contact owns a 2017 Ford F-350. The contact stated that the tailgate popped open intermittently. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was taken to flood Ford of east greenwich (2545 s county trl, east greenwich, ri 02818, (833) 651-8957) where they found straps and an air mattress stuck in between the tailgate. The latch was repaired, but the failure recurred. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 25,700.

The tailgate will come down while riding down the road or after hitting a bump. Very unsafe while hauling or towing. There is no indicator in the cab to tell you the tailgate has dropped. Have had it in for service at least 4 times. Vehicle is less than a year old.

For no reason the tailgate will open on it's own. Either driving or parked. Tailgate has come down a number of times. At highway speeds and in a parking lot.

Electronically latched tailgate opening by itself while driving. Especially worrying when towing 5th wheel trailer as impact with trailer can occur. Local dealer inspected and said, "unable to duplicate. Unable to repair. " has occurred multiple times.

Electric tailgate has released and dropped open while driving. Has happened three times at low speed. Twice while pulling fifth wheel trailer and once not towing anything.

Inadvertant tailgate opening. I have a 2019 Ford F-350 lariat super duty. The tailgate has opened 4 times within the first 800 miles of operation. There is no alert system in the casb to alert the driver the tailgate has opened. The only indication is an alert while backing to check the area. I have a toneau cover over the truck bed that obstructs the rear camera from alerting the driver. I was unaware the tailgate was open while driving the vehicle. Fortunately nothing fell out during the trips. This occurred on multiple occasions and different mileages.

Well driving tailgate opens on its own causing damage to tailgate trailer . Was in for repairs but is still opening not safe don't want law suit for stuff that falls out. Lost ratchet straps & 2 power drills batteries & charger no light or buzzer letting driver know that tailgate has opened there is one for hood think I would notice my hood. Scared to drive also too costly & dangerous to drivers behind me.

I purchased this f350 new, and took delivery of this vehicle on December 12 2019. 8 times since receiving. This vehicle I have experienced eight (8) un commanded tailgate releases. I noticed that the tailgate was down when receiving a warning while backing. I have a tonneau cover on the truck which prevents the rear camera from showing the tailgate open. As of yet I have not lost any cargo as a result of this opening. I did not hit I the inside release, or the key fob to direct the opening.

Two issues. : 1) I had a hard time keeping the tires inflated to the correct levels. After four or five trips back to the dealership, this issue may be corrected. It was so bad I had to purchase a pump to make sure I could pump the tires up when I was away from home -- rving. The dealership would have to have known about the issue when they sold me the vehicle. The truck could lose 30 pounds of tire pressure over a two week period. I purchased the truck in March 2018. 2) on four or five occasions the tailgate has fallen open. Once it did it while I was towing a trailer. On the other occasions it has fallen open without us knowing it. Today, my wife used the truck. She got home and parked the truck in the driveway. When she went out to check the mail, she found the tail gate open. We recently complained to fox Ford, the dealership that sold us the truck. When my wife took the truck in for an oil change, she complained about the tailgate issue. They claimed they "tightened it" according to my wife. Well, the problem has not been solved. I will complain again to them tomorrow.

Tailgate will open randomly when hitting a bump on the road or highway. Has happened 4 times in the first 6 months I have owned. The dealership can find no problem. Resulted in loosing my payload on the interstate, very dangerous.

Ford tail gate opens spontaneously while in motion. It has happened 3 times. It has damaged my travel trailer and the top of the tailgate. The latest occurrence was 11/8/18. I don't recall the other dates. It is unknown when it opened. I realized that it had opened when I heard the crunching sound it the tailgate damaging my trailer. I have not way of knowing when the tailgate opened, I only know when it caused damage to my trailer. I am reluctant to put cargo in my truck because it come out and damage property or kill someone.

While pulling from a fuel pump I began turning when I heard a loud noise. The tailgate had inadvertently opened and pierced through the front of a 5th wheel camper I was pulling. This caused significant damage to the camper as well as the to the top of the tailgate. This 1st incident happened ~ 3700 miles. I latched the tailgate and picked up another trailer (pintle hitch). I pulled into a parking lot to drop off the load and noticed that the tailgate had came down a second time. After dropping trailer off I began to drive home. Half way home to get fuel (un laden) I noticed the tailgate down again. The remote nor the dash button had been touched. The tailgate has since been removed as I can not risk further damage caused from my tailgate opening by itself. I informed my dealership (ryan Ford of sealy,TX. ) multiple times of the incident however was replied with only that there was no active TSB issues for my VIN.

The remote tailgate deployed (opened) at 60mph on I-40 east of nashville, TN. While towing our fifth wheel trailer. We heard a load boom, and did not notice anything until we stopped and the tailgate was down. There were no external inputs causing deployment of the tailgate.

Tailgate has opened up on it's own on two different occasions. Once while parked and once while driving.

Tl-the contact owns a 2017 Ford super duty F-350. The contact stated that while driving at 45 mph the tailgate gate flew off the vehicle and damaged both tail lights. The contact called the dealer pure country Ford 333 c w stevens boulevard, grayson, ky 41143 (606) 474-5414 gave a quote to fix the tail lights but no repairs were completed. The manufacture was not contacted. The failure mileage was 27,000. Tf.

Tailgate opens unexpectedly. I bought my 2017 f350 lariat dually used in June 2017. 8 days after I bought the truck the tailgate opened while I was towing a gooseneck horse trailer. Luckily I was about 50 feet from my driveway. The tailgate was contacted by the trailer as I turned and has some damage from an aluminum foot stool falling out. It has happened 3 other times. Each time I thought I had possibly bumped the key fob in my pocket, as it has a tailgate release button. You do have to touch the button two times in succession for the tailgate to open. Each time it has happened I have started or moved the truck, unlocked and opened the drivers door and then got back in the truck. I believe there is some correlation but I have not been able to duplicate it. Each time the vehicle was under way, but I did not see it open as I have tinted windows. And I usually don't watch the tailgate in the mirrors.

On may 24th, 2018 while driving my tailgate automatically came down. I was towing a 5th wheel RV trailer at the time and damage occurred to the tailgate top trim and the RV front garage door. Both the trim and the front garage door had to be replaced, plus touchup paint for the tailgate edges.

I'm April of 2018 the electric tailgate on my 2017 Ford F-350 started opening on its own anytime and anywhere. It did not matter if the truck was in park or in gear but did not open at speeds above 10 mph or so. After going to the Ford dealership in elkhart in. I was told there was nothing that could be done because if they unhooked the wiring l could not open the tailgate. I pull a 5th wheel trailer with the truck so this was not an option if l wanted a tailgate. I tried to watch the best l could before taking off to make sure the tailgate was closed when l would move the truck. I did not notice that it had come down again and made a turn with the trailer hooked to the truck. Needless to say the tailgate was crushed beyond use and broke a twilight lens at the same time. Again l went to the Ford dealership in elkhart in and was told they had no reports of problems and there was nothing they could do about it. The tailgate has not been replaced do to the fact l am sure there is still an is sure.

The rear tailgate will open randomly on it's own. I've taken it in and nothing was done . This could cause a serious accident when towing a 5th wheel because the tailgate would hit the trailer. When this happens potential loss of steering could happen.

Power tailgate opened while driving on the interstate. Some items in the bed were lost.

Rear tailgate opens by itself. Unknown when it occurs as I have a camper shell which prevents the tailgate from completely opening. This has occurred 40-50 times randomly since purchasing the truck new in August 2017. Notified the dealer of issue and Ford TSB-2196 but was informed that because my vehicle was produced after June 2017, it does not apply to my problem. Unless they can duplicate the issue, they will not address the issue. No damage has occurred because of the camper shell preventing tailgate from dropping.

I ordered this vehicle, f350 king ranch, and took delivery February 2018. Since then the tailgate has intermittently opened on its own. The first time was February 27, 2018. The truck does have the power tailgate release option. This has happened both when the truck is stationary and in motion. In the 19 months I have had the truck the tailgate has opened approximately 15 times. Fortunately, I haven't lost anything out of the bed while driving, so far. I have no idea what the cause is.

The contact owns a 2017 Ford F-350. The contact stated while driving approximately 15 mph, the tailgate fell. The contact indicated there was no warning prior to the tailgate falling on several occasion. The contact also stated the four rear outer aluminum rims were constantly allowing the tires to lose air pressure. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer and diagnosed tailgate failure was confirmed. The dealer repaired the tailgate; however, the failure recurred. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 10,000.

The tailgate has opened on it's own while driving at least 12 times. The truck is one year old and has approximately 13k miles.

The contact owns a 2017 Ford F-350 sd. While driving approximately 70 mph, a noise was present coming from the rear of the vehicle. After stopping the vehicle, it was discovered that the tailgate had erroneously opened. The local dealer (osseo Ford of osseo, wisconsin) was notified of the failure and replaced the tailgate. The contact indicated that the failure occurred on several occasions. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The VIN was not available. The failure mileage was 7,000.

The vehicle in question, a Ford F-350 pick up, is normally used to pull a gooseneck trailer. To connect the trailer, the tail gate of the truck must be opened, the truck backed up part way, the tail ate then closed, and the trailer connected. The tail gate is not opened again until the trailer is being disconnected. I followed this procedure, hauled the trailer about 40 miles on interstate highway to its destination and unloaded the trailer. I then was proceeding to park the trailer before unloading the bed of the truck. During a low speed u turn over slightly rough ground, the tail gate of the Ford F-350 (which was still towing the goose neck trailer) popped open and fell against the trailer. Before I could get the vehicle stopped, the tail gate was bent by the trailer. Damage to the tailgate and truck is costing $1750 to repair.

The contact states there is a flat piece of metal that holds the bed together; the metal was completely rusted and apart from the bends of the truck. He has an arrow technical body. Contacted, redding the manufacturer of the bed of the truck; they called their bosses and said they could not do anything for him because he was the owner of only one truck. He has found this is a major problem. Found out that they could not put under coat underneath the truck because of a fire hazard. In addition, found out they were putting under coat under the truck that arose from a fire a year or two before he bought the truck. He received a recall letter regarding the straps for the tailgate. He warranty on the bed of the truck almost expired. The truck does not have any contact with any off-road elements. The model # of the body was: v110fsw99. The serial # of the body 501393 . January, 2004, the first "real" load in my new 2003 Ford F-350 "super duty" truck, was my harley-davidson flhr. It loaded with no apparent problems. On off-loading of the motorcycle, as the rear tire rolled onto the leading edge (lower edge) of the tailgate, the tailgate crushed. I spoke with the purchasing dealers service manager who agreed that the problem was unusual and probably shouldn't have happened. However, he would not warranty the tailgate. I was referred to the Ford factory service "rep. " he agreed that he didn't think the tailgate should have failed, but had no basis for warranty. The two service managers referred me to the Ford customer assistance center. I called the customer assistance center twice, hoping to gain additional information. I was told that Ford has tailgate specs available to the dealers through the "Ford tech hotline. " I contacted the dealers general mgr. He "looked into it" and said that Ford doesn't offer specs or capys for tailgates. Therefore, he would not warranty it. I filed a complaint with the Ford dispute settlement board (dsb) per my owners guide. The complaint was very detailed. I asked that they determine if Ford offered specs and capys on their tailgates - if so, an objective determination could be made as to whether or not I met or exceeded those specifications. If I did, the failure would be on me; if not, the failure should be covered under warranty. The dsb responded: . . . We regret to advise you that the concern stated in your application does not fall within the jurisdiction of the board. . . . If the problem still remains, you may contact the Ford customer assistance center at 1-800------ for further assistance. I have come full circle. To date, no one at Ford motor company is willing to discuss this tailgate failure in objective, measurable terms. Apparently, there is no avenue to pursue outside of this loop of dealership to Ford assistance center and back to the dealership.
