While I was pulling out of my work parking lot, the power steering failure light came on and the steering became extremely hard to control. Unlike older vehicles without power steering, it was very stiff and hard to control no matter what speed I was going. When I looked up the issue there is an open recall for the exact same problem and even in the year car that I have. When I called in to get it covered under the recall they say that my VIN is not covered in the recall. They clearly know this is a safety issue and it's happening to my type of car. Had my wife been driving with our kids and didn't have the strength to control the car home who knows what might have happened. This is a huge problem and according to several forums I have read, I am not alone. This needs to be addressed to the full extent of the problem before someone is killed.

2013 Ford Flex. Consumer writes in regards to illuminated power steering light. The consumer state while driving the power steering went out with a very short notice. While attempting to stop the vehicle slowly ran over a curb. There was no damage. The manufacturer was notified and stated the vehicle was previously repaired for the failure. The manufacturer denied any additional assistance. The dealer denied assistance due to the code only showing that the vehicle failed due to impact, and not that the pscm failure was the cause of the impact.
While driving, I heard a strange noise coming from the steering column. Once I reached my destination and returned to my car and started it, the power steering assist warning light came on. I began to pull off, the vehicle would not steer, and I had to have my car towed home. The next day I called Ford to explained what happened and was told it would cost around $2,000 to fix. I googled it and found out the steering assist had been recalled for that year make and model. I then called the number associated with the recall and keyed in the code related to the make and model. A few moments later, a rep came on the line and asked for my VIN. He informed me that there was a recall in 2015 or 16 can't remember the exact year, but unfortunately, the recall was VIN specific, and my vehicle was not on that list. I found this news to be very disturbing, dangerous, and irresponsible for Ford not to replace or repair this faulty part in all of the 2014 models, not just those with a specific VIN. What is it going to take for them to correct this; prayerfully not someone's life?.

2010 Ford Flex limited ecoboost awd. Electrical power steering. Intermittent loss of power steering with no lights, notifications, or warning. Fixed short term by turning car off and back on again. Very dangerous at low speeds, especially with the weight of the vehicle and size of the tires, specifically for smaller people. Recall from Ford for 2011, will not help at all with a 2010 Flex. Has already caused one accident in a parking lot resulting in damage to rear driver side quarter panel after steering wheel became stuck while reversing. Fuel pump also not engaging, resulting in stalls and the car not starting (no ticks, humming, buzzing, lights and radio work). Overall, a very dangerous combination if they were to occur simultaneously, especially at speed. Car was purchased around 1 1/2- 2 months ago. Both issues are becoming more and more frequent.

Approximately 5 months ago I went to go start my 2010 Ford Flex and I had no power steering. I could not steer my car at all, after sitting for about 20 minutes I re-started my vehicle and the steering was back to normal. Since then I have had intermittent problems with my power steering. Occasionally when I start my vehicle I have no power steering, if I turn the steering wheel slightly left or right it will come back on. I have no warning lights on my dashboard for this, but I have had on occasion the traction control light come on but only for a couple of minutes, then it goes away. I have taken it to Ford and they claimed I had a fault code for the power steering, but could not send me any info on it. Luckily this has not happened while the vehicle is being driven, it's usually upon starting. It seems based on the recall of 2011-2014 that Ford would have included the 2010 vehicles. If this happens while I'm driving it could have serious consequences.
For several months leading up to the dealership service shop visit, I noticed a soft grinding noise (rubber on rubber) when turn the vehicle (any direction), most notable, at low speed. About 10 days before the service shop visit the grinding noise became very loud, so loud, that it prompted the service visit. Also noticed that the steering wheel started to slightly stick and I had to constantly make steering corrections. This would happen at any speed.
On vacation in smoky mountains. Thurs Aug 13 - steering acting strange. Stopped to check power steering fluid and found out its electrical. No warning lights on at that time. Called Ford - told no steering recalls only fuel delivery module. Talked to 2 service depts at Ford and was told to get it checked when we got back home. Continued our day. Driving on top of 2nd tallest mountain on east coast - called clingmans dome. We hear 4 loud bongs and check power steering light comes on and poof - no steering. Took all we had to avoid guard rail, oncoming traffic and death on the top of this mountain. Got it to a stop. Had to find tow truck to pull it off mountain. Dropped at Ford dealer and was told power steering failure and they replaced entire rack. Ford wont pay rental, trauma for kids that wont ride in it again, have to drive 6 hrs to go get car. Ford doesnt care!!! was told by my regional Ford customer service rep that vehicles do not come off of the assembly line perfect and thats why we have warranties.
When we turn the car on the power steering warning light flashes and the power steering goes out (the steering wheel shift to the right and it becomes manual steering and very hard to turn the wheel straight). It goes directly into manual mode. We turn the car off and back on and the light disappears and the electric power steering is working again. It has happen this way several times over the past 2 weeks. We have a Ford Flex 2010 eco boost that has the electric power steering system. We took to the dealership and they are staying we need to replace the steering control box. It's faulty and a very expensive fix. But we do not fall under the recall for the Ford Flex since that is for the 2011 and current. It's the same issue the other Ford Flex's are having with the power steering. I've read on numerous forum that this issue is happening also with the 2010 eco boost Ford Flex. Very scary if this happens while driving with kids in the car and the steering goes out. This is just one of many issues we have had with this car including having to replace the throttle body due to the car jerking and engine revving up while at idle, grinding breaks which we keep being told is normal and premature tire wear.
