The electric power steering stops working randomly allowing no assist until vehicle is shut off and restarted. Ford does have a recall for this same issue Ford slightly older vehicles with the electric power steering. When the power steering failure happens, vehicle is in motion and trying to turn, low speeds only so far.

This is the third time the power steering has failed in this vehicle. I was driving 60 mph and without warning the steering seized. Luckily I was driving in right lane and was able to get vehicle safely to a lot. There was no warning, no noises, no dashboard lights came on. The steering became very tight and was extremely difficult to turn the wheel.

After starting the vehicle and while still stationary the vehicle displayed a 'power steering assist fault' and the power steering failed. The car is very had to steer after getting this error message. I was able to stop and re-start the car and the error message was not displayed again and I was able to drive the car. The error is now happening every 2-3 days depending on the frequency it is driven. If this happens while driving it is very dangerous.

Power steering failed while I was driving on the highway at 70mph. Thankfully I was able to successfully bring my vehicle to a stop which was after driving a mile with little-to-no steering. Our mechanic informed us that this is definitely a part of the power steering recall on the 2013 Ford Flex, however when I pull my VIN it appears there are no recalls. This is a huge safety concern as I drive 4 children in this vehicle daily. This is not something that I as a consumer caused - I perform my regularly scheduled maintenance and this is not something that I should have to foot the bill for.
Electronic power steering failure while highway driving between 50-55mph. Instrument cluster warning message at exact moment of failure.

While driving the cars power steering just failed.
2013 Ford Flex with ~130,000 miles. Slow right hand turn into parking lot, complete loss of power steering in combination with "power steering failure" and "check advancetrac" warning lights. Research indicates a recall (NHTSA 15v340000,Ford 15s18, NHTSA) for my vehicle built between 9/7/2010 and 2/28/2012. As my build date was 12/12 it does not fall under the recall. I have confirmed this with my personal mechanic, a local Ford dealership (varsity Ford, ann arbor mi) as well as with Ford customer service. Symptoms of my failure are identical to those described in the recall. Mechanic followed technician instructions for the recall, by flashing/updating pscm module software. Steering appeared to be working normal. Subsequent warning light ~3days later of "service power steering" appeared, but steering was still functioning. My concern is that the software upgrade is "bandaid", if complete loss of steering occurs in the future, the situation might be different resulting an accident and/or injury. It appears the steering problem continued on cars built after Feb 2012, I have informed Ford customer service and complaint has been "escalated" to Ford regional customer service manager. I feel that the build date for covered repairs should be extended.
As I was driving on the highway at approximately 60 mph, a warning bell sounded and electronic message appeared indicating an electronic power steering assist failure. I was able to slow down and turn off the road, but no power steering was available.

My power steering failed and I went onto sidewalk, barely missing my neighbor. Ford says my vehicle is not in the recall.
Noticed the steering tighten up while driving. Went away, came back, went away, came back. Wife couldn't turn the wheel safely. Electric power steering failure.
Steering is very difficult, like the power steering is failing. The mechanic said there was nothing wrong with it (no failure codes). But it is still very difficult to turn, making it feel very unsafe.
Driving the vehicle the electronic power steering failed while driving straight. . I was driving approximately 55 mph. A service power steering and service advanc trac system code appeared on the dashboard. The vehicle is extremely hard to steer. I believe the electronic power steering system failed in the vehicle.
Tl the contact owns a 2011 Ford Flex. While driving, the contact stated that the power steering assist failed. The contact had to exert excessive force to turn the steering wheel. The steering wheel failed to function properly for the entire ride. The vehicle was taken to willow brook Ford (7301 kingery hwy, willowbrook, IL 60527, (630) 986-5000) where it was diagnosed that a new steering system needed to be installed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and did not assist. The failure mileage was 70,000.
While driving power steering failed and can't steer to hard also air conditioner blower stopped working at the same time.
Power steering suddenly failed. System warned of vsc fault, then steering assist fault, then there was no power assist, at 50mph. I was driving straight on an airport access road. The problem persisted for a 2 miles or so, when I was able to get it off the road safely. When I turned off the ignition and re-started a few minutes later, the problem was gone, as were the warnings.
4 months age my power steering pump fail while driving. We could not get a replacement (new) at my dealer. Had a Ford re-built pump installed at $450. 00, and that failed immediately. Still no new pumps available thru Ford. I can't get Ford to talk to me or my mechanic. I'm having trouble driving my car in this condition. What can be done?.
Tl the contact owns a 2013 Ford Flex. While operating the vehicle, the "power steering failure" message displayed and the power steering malfunctioned, which made the steering wheel very difficult to turn in either direction. The failure was not diagnosed or repaired. The local dealer (nashville Ford, 723 s. Davis st. , nashville GA, 31639) and the manufacturer were both notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 86,000.
Power steering failure message appeared in message center while driving on a city street, power steering immediately failed. This made steering nearly impossible. Made it to a parking lot, waited a few minutes and started the vehicle. The message was gone and car operated as normal. I called the local Ford dealership and told them about the issue. Their reply was that if it did it again to bring it in, they could not do anything if it was driving normally. Are we to continue driving the vehicle with no diagnosis of the problem by Ford? this seems like very dangerous advice from the Ford dealership.
The power steering system failed in my 2010 Ford Flex with less than 80,000 miles. Thankfully the failure did not occur while we were driving. We had the car towed to our mechanic who said that the entire steering rack needed to be replaced. The part is $1600 and labor is over $500. There is an active recall of the 2011-2013 Ford Flex model years for the exact same problem. I called Ford and told them I believed there was a safety related defect in the 2010 Ford Flex that is the same as the problem in the 2011 my that caused the recall. The representative said that because there was not an active bulletin for the 2010 my, Ford would do nothing to fix the problem. Obviously this is the same problem that is present in later model years. Ford's refusal to recall and fix this problem is going to kill someone. If the power steering had gone out while we were driving, there surely would have been a wreck.
"Ford Flex power steering assist failure and trac control malfunction. The epas motor on millions of vehicles are failing and very dangerous for Flex owners. I have found that from research on this issue that the epas motor is actually overheating and burning up the electric motor. Ford manufacturer has deliberately lied to NHTSA about what the actual problem is. This is a very unsafe condition for which they presented a recall on certain 2013 vehicles. I spoke with my local dealership about the issue and they responded that my VIN number does not fall in the campaign or technical service bulletins. Campaign for the recall is exactly what is going on with my vehicle but yet Ford wants to charge me money for the repairs and diagnostic when they are well aware that this is a manufacturer issue. It is a very unsafe condition which has killed and injured people. They just haven't gotten to the point to where they admit that it is on way more vehicles than they are admitting to. I am very disappointed that NHTSA is not forcing Ford to repair the vehicles that have the symptoms of the exact recall on a case-by-case basis at very least. I was traveling around 70 miles an hour down interstate I-40 when system failed and almost flipped my vehicle. How can a dealership not be responsible for this or how many people have to die before they do take responsibility? recall number is 15 s18 or 15v340000.
Over the past 6 months, my power steering would fail leaving me in manual mode. I would stop and restart the car and the power would return. I took the car in this week and it will now cost me $2000 to repair it. Prior to taking it to my dealership, I researched possible recalls. Sure enough, there was one in 2015 for "certain" 2013 Ford Flex. But my VIN was not in the recall. I called Ford customer service and all the representative did was read scripts to me letting me know that my car was not in the recall. This is the second thing on my car that has gone wrong that was covered for other "certain" Flex--the first was the fuel pump. Disappointed that identified problems are not covered for all!!!.
I was pulling into my driveway and my steering column locked up completely. The idiot alarm started going off and I received and error code. The error read power steering failure. I took it to tire kingdom and they said I was part of the 15v3400000 recall. I called Ford and they would not cover the repair even though it's exactly the same safety recall issue I am having and my car is on the recall list. They said sorry your VIN isn't listed as being affected. It's clearly the same issue and is. Wing affected. It's dangerous that I wasn't notified and now that I'm having the problems that caused the recall in the first place they still won't fix it.
Power steering assist fails; driving and the power steering stops working, sometimes unexpectedly. Very dangerous! it is sporadic--sometimes it works and other times it does not work. Usually happens when stationary, and turning it on--power steering will not engage for several seconds. Once it happened when driving and I was lucky to pull over car. Turned it off and back on and it started working.
Vehicle equipped with epas steering system that has been part of a recall for 2011-2013 Ford Flex vehicles with the exact same steering system but for some reason does not include 2010 models. Vehicle began having power steering failure upon cold start up in the last few weeks. It would resolve itself in a few seconds. This morning, 8/29/2017, the power steering would not recover and I received a "power steering assist fault" error on my message center screen. After a few minutes, I turned off the car and back on again and the steering worked fine. I turned it off and on yet again and the failure returned. I tried several times and got the failure more times than not. I called Ford and was told recall #15s18 did not apply to my vehicle, even though it is the exact same issue with the exact same part as the 2011-2013 vehicles. The vehicle is unsafe to drive.
My power steering failure indicator came on (while I was driving), indicating a need for immediate service. Upon testing, it was determined that the steering gear was faulty. . . On a 2015 vehicle!! this could have caused an accident if the gear failed while I was driving. I would not expect such a failure in a 2015 vehicle. It looks like previous Ford models have been recalled due to a similar issue. I think there must be a design or manufacturing flaw. Given that this is related to steering and creates a high risk of injury in the event of an accident, I recommend that this be fully investigated.
Over the last few months, as I am driving my vehicle, my steering will seize and stop operating. The computer comes up with the following message, "power steering assist failure". I took the car to a mechanic to have it diagnosed and was told there is a safety recall for this exact issue. The information is as follows: NHTSA campaign number 15v340000, Ford Flex 2011-2013, Ford recall #15s18. I called the local Ford dealership, bird kultgen, and they stated that it does not pertain to my vehicle because when they pulled my VIN, it did not give them a recall message. I called the Ford company and they said the same thing. The recall listed is for Ford Flex 2013, which is what I have. Both the Ford dealership as well as the company stated - sorry. Isn't it possible for this to have an effect on other VIN's as well? that is what I was asking for them to look into. If my steering fails, and I am on the highway, which is what I drive daily to work, I will crash. The dealership as well as Ford stated - maybe it will come up in a week, who knows.
Tl the contact owns a 2013 Ford Flex. When the vehicle was started, the power steering assist failed. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who was able to retrieve the following diagnostic trouble codes: u3000-49 (control module internal electronic failure), u3000-72 (power steering control module failure), u0401 (invalid data received from ecm/pcm), u0401-72 (lost communication with bcm), and b1215 (body control module failure). The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was taken to butch oustalet Ford (located at 9274 us 49, gulfport, ms 39503, (228) 863-5525) for consultation and the contact asked what parts were necessary to have the vehicle repaired. The contact was referred to the parts department. The contact was informed that the steering gear assembly needed to be replaced (eg12*3504*h). The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 15v340000 (steering). The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 97,000.
Power steering failed while driving and we had no control over the vehicle.
Ford Flex 2013 failed power steering on Sunday, October 2nd while steering to the right (and my foot on the brake) the power steering on my 2013 Ford Flex completely failed causing me to almost drive off a hill into the embankment below. A power steering failure message appeared on the dash board as this was happening. The car has only 55,000 miles. After retrieving the vehicle, I made an appointment with rancho santa margarita Ford. I did some research online and found a recall #15v340000 was for this exact power steering problem for 2011, 2012 and some 2013 Ford Flexes. After running tests at rancho santa margarita Ford- a diagnosis of dtc u3000:49 was found saying power steering internal failure. After initially being led to believe (by rancho santa margarita Ford) that Ford was honoring it under the recall, to my surprise Ford has declined my 2013 Ford Flex saying it was not included in the initial recall(number above. This is a huge safety and liability issue. I could have driven off a cliff with my 3 kids if it failed at the wrong moment or hit other cars and caused someone else harm or even death. The power steering failed completely without notice. I was unable to maneuver the steering wheel at all. I think other owners should know about this problem and have it taken care of by Ford so they are not at risk or in danger. Ford should be responsible for protecting their customers and replacing all defective power steering issues. I have attached part of the invoice for you to see the diagnosis code. I opted to not give them another $2,000 to fix their defective issue and have decided to take it elsewhere. So that is why it says declined repairs for that section. Reference the section that says labor 126. 00 to read the code.
Our car was recalled for a power steering failure while driving on the highway and luckily I was driving because it was very hard to steer. Ford repaired the steering problem. The car then experienced the same problem 8 months later and Ford is refusing to cover the repair. They claim that we are past the 1 yr / 12k mile warranty but we had brought the car into the dealer several months earlier and the claimed they could not find the fault. The car's power steering failed again while my wife was driving on the highway nearly causing an accident. After the failure the car was 200 mile over the warranty. Ford now claims that we are responsible for the entire cost of repair. Clearly the replacement part they used was defective.
2010 Ford Flex sel with ecoboost, 87k miles. Electronic power steering went out on my on my way home. I was on my street, so when I got home, I turned off and restarted the car, power steering was fine. A week later the power steering failed right when I started the car, and no amount of restarting has brought it back to life. Apparently I'm looking at around $1000 for a new sas and steering gear. It seems there was a recall on the 2011-2013 Flexes, but not the 2010s, which to my knowledge have the same electronic steering system. I see others on forums complaining about this issue as well, and would really like to see a resolution to this problem.
On December 31, 2015, I experienced a power steering assist failure. This warning appeared in the dash display. I had no power steering in the car. I was trying to pull out of a parking space. The problem continued when driving. Turning off and restarting the car had no effect in clearing the failure. Also had an advance trac warning appear on the dash and the turn signals would only operate if held manually in position. I know there was a recall (Ford recall number 15s18) issued which covers this problem in Ford Flex vehicles built before mine. My Flex was built 9/25/2012. The dealer corrected the problem by replacing pscm. However, since the mileage put the car just out of warranty, I had to pay for the repairs. It appears that the steering problem continued on cars built after Feb. 2012 which was the build date specified in the above recall. I would like the build date for covered repairs to be extended and communicated to Ford motor company. I am unable to upload the documentation at this time.
