36 Car Stall problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 08/01/2011

With the vehicle in gear, either forward or reverse, and with a foot on the break at idle rpm the engine surges causing the vehicle to lurch. Consequently, the vehicle will either stall or the "wrench" light will illuminate and the vehicle will not accelerate to over 30mph while driving the rpm's up well past normal for that rate of speed. This is also the case while at idle speed (no foot on break. . . Just engine in gear and at idle. . . As if pulling into or out of a parking space). This has been ongoing, yet intermittent, for a little over a year though now it's a multiple-daily occurence.

37 Car Stall problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 07/30/2011

I have a 2005 Ford Freestyle. Yesterday when backing up the car suddenly surged. My foot was not on the gas pedal. I was able to stop the car and it stalled. This is not the first time the car has done this but this time was the most noticable. This happens sporadically and only seems to do it when at idle speeds. It does happen in forward and reverse. Mainly in parking situtations. This may also be related to the a/c as I just started noticing this issue in early summer when I started to use the a/c.

38 Car Stall problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 07/23/2011

We have experienced 3 instances of unintended lurching with our 2005 Ford Freestyle. After the lurching occurred, there was loss of power steering and the vehicle stalled. Two out of three times damage or injury almost occurred and was narrowly avoided. All three times the vehicle was in reverse then forward. The ac was on.

39 Car Stall problem of the 2007 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 06/18/2011

My 2007 Ford Freestyle has been having unexpected acceleration while at very low speeds in either forward or reverse. The acceleration can be stopped by the brake, but happens unexpectedly. I have previously reported this to the Ford dealership where I purchased the vehicle, however, they were unable to replicate the problem, so no action was taken. The problem has been occurring with increasing frequency over the past year. It is worse when the car has been running for a long time, or in hot weather it seems with air conditioning running. The lunging will sometimes happen repeatedly in the course of trying to park the car, then the car will sometimes stall. I have serious safety concerns while driving in parking lots as it is difficult to control the vehicle. The problem is exactly as described in NHTSA investigation pe11018.

40 Car Stall problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 06/14/2011

My Ford Freestyle has had engine surging issues for approximately a year know. Today 6/21/2012 my car started surging at every stop light so severely if we weren't holding down the brake we would of hit the car in front of us. The problem became so severe we had to put the car in neutral at every intersection to keep car from trying to jump into the intersection and stall. Today's temp was in the high nineties and we were using the air conditioning. Today's incident was the worst its been. Went on line and search the symptoms and found that a lot of Freestyle owners are having the same issue. With the safety of the car owner and pedestrians that could be near the car in jeopardy. Ford should be recalling these cars and trying to find a permanent solution to fix this rather then charging the owners high dollars to replace a defective designed part with the same defective part.

41 Car Stall problem of the 2007 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 06/01/2011

The contact owns a 2007 Ford Freestyle. The contact stated that the vehicle lunged forward abnormally before completely stalling. The contact was able to restart the vehicle but the failure recurred consistently especially when the air conditioning unit was activated. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for inspection or repair. The current mileage was 93,000. The approximate failure mileage was 88,000.

42 Car Stall problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 05/30/2011

In the summer of 2011 our Freestyle began to surge as far as two feet while driven at low speeds and also while at a complete stop, surging forward or backward when in reverse, revving loudly and subsequently stalling. Concerned, we took the vehicle to our Ford service department. The Ford service department told us that the problem was uncommon (not true) and did not mention any service bulletins before reprogramming our Freestyles pcm and replacing the throttle body.

43 Car Stall problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 05/26/2011

I was waiting in line to pick my daughter up from school today. When she got in the car I took my foot off of the brake and my car lunged forward and almost hit the car in front of me. I had to push down on the brake to stop my car from crashing into the car in front of me. When I attempted to take my foot off of the brake for a second time and to drive around the other car, my car lunged again and almost stalled.

44 Car Stall problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 05/24/2011

Ford Freestyle stalls and shuts down while driving, disabling the powered steering among other things and causes very unsafe situations. This will usually start with some hesitations of the engine and then it dies. Often it stalls while taking off from standstill as well either forward or going in reverse. Sometimes there is surging of the engine as well, especially while using ac or turning the steering wheel. This has caused many dangerous situations on the road where all of the sudden we stall in middle of traffic. The car has been to the dealer about three times for these issues, last time for fuel system cleaning but this has not solved the problems.

45 Car Stall problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 05/01/2011

Vehicle has been lunging when put into drive from park, and when put into reverse from park. Kinda scary actually! this summer, it got severe during the heat wave while using the a/c; vehicle would lunge then stall out. Called the local dealership to complain, and was told the car has too many miles on it. Called the Ford national complant line to report same; was told "it has not been a reported problem". When I searched the problem on line, I found that to be a false statement.

46 Car Stall problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 04/28/2011

I was sitting in the car with the air conditioner on for about 10 minutes with my children while my wife went to pick up a few groceries. When we left I put the car reverse and slowly took my foot of the break. The car then jerked backwards as my foot was softly on the break and then again when it was off the break. The car then stalled and the wrench light appeared. This has happened several more times since, mostly when the car is in "drive" with the air conditioner working hard and my foot either softly on the break or just off the break. The car will jerk forward. I'm not sure the component that is malfunctioning, but bellow is an educated guess.

47 Car Stall problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 03/08/2011

I noticed on yesterday's news that my vehiocle and problem is under investigation, so I want to add my voice to the number who have had a similar problem. My 2005 Ford Freestyle lurches unexpectedly. It will only occur for a few seconds. I have owned the car for 1. 5 years, and it has happened on 2 separate ocassions. Both times I was travelling very slowly preparing to enter a parking stall. Fortunately I already had my foot on the brake, so not damage or injuries occurred.

48 Car Stall problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 11/27/2010

Throttle body replaced after car did not start - 2005 Ford Freestyle. Prior to replacement, jerking/lurching of the vehicle once started and foot off the gas pedal. Hesitated to start on many occasions if car is parked on an incline as if no gasoline in vehicle. Also, on occasions, car stalled in the middle of the street, but started up after several tries. During replacement, Ford representative indicated that the part just went out - nothing could have prevented it. Cost $600+ to fix which also caused additional parts (spark plugs, fuel sensor) required. Diagnosis indicated, throttlebody plates stuck, fuel sensor injector pressure replaced). Dealership kept old parts except spark plugs.

49 Car Stall problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 10/29/2010

I have always owned Fords however this is by far the scariest Ford car ever and to me the unsafest!! I purchased my Ford Freestyle back in October 2010. Ever since then my car seems to have a mind of its own. When I am completely stopped my car will automatically lunge forward and even stall when I am turning my wheel. I have a 5 year old child who I drive everyday to school in this death trap and it scares me to death. I have tried talking to my Ford dealership about this since the car was like this when I bought it but of course they want me to spend all this money I do not have on repairs. . . After internet research it appears there are hundreds of people that have the same problem with this vehicle. Why isn't anyone doing something about this to protect the consumer? it is very scary and I do not understand why the car is lunging forward and backwards if backing up when my foot is clearly on the brake as well as stalling . I hope someone will do something about it before someone ends up in an accident or even dead because of this!! that would be a serious lawsuit I am sure. This is a serious issue please please do a recall on it now if not for me for the sake of someone's life who is driving one of these unsafe vehicles.

50 Car Stall problem of the 2007 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 08/20/2010

On several occassions beginning on this date while driving under 10 miles per hour, the car would lung forward and then when the brakes were applied the car would stall. This "surging" problem would occur once you took your foot off of the brake after being stopped for a period of time but would happen before you pressed the acelerator. Because of the severity of the issue and after almost hitting another car while in a parking lot, we took the car to a Ford dealership. They diagnoised the problem and we had to have the throttle body replaced which was a significant cost. Since this issue is currently under investigation, we wanted to submit our experience to be considered and so that we would be notified in the case of recall.

51 Car Stall problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 08/10/2010

My 2006 Ford Freestyle has had an increasing number of incidences where the car has just come out of park and into forward or reverse, where all of a sudden the throttle will surge even when applying the brake. When it is hot out, it is now occurring several times a week. Yesterday it did the same thing and then stalled completely. When I turned the car back on, the 'wrench' light was on and the car lost all its power. Then I disconnected the battery and everything was back to normal. I checked the problem online and it seems to be a very prevalent and extremely dangerous situation for this car. The dealers are unable to repair it at this time because the problems are happening so often that the needed parts are on back-order. I am forced to drive the car until the parts become available, constantly fearing that it will cause an accident.

52 Car Stall problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 07/25/2010

The throttle body in my 2006 Ford Freestyle was causing my car to either stall or lunge out of control. Trying to pull into traffic, the car stalled in front of oncoming traffic. Then began working as normal. A few days later the car began to lunge forward or backward when the transmission was shifted. Would lunge when in drive and stopped. Took to dealer, and they replaced with a new throttle body. I do not have the old one. Ford knows there is a problem. They have been backordered for most of 2009 and into 2010 on this part. They have changed the replacement part to a new one, with different part number. Thousands of cars have had this issue. Cars can stall at highway speeds, in traffic. Or can suddenly lunge forward even when the brake is depressed.

53 Car Stall problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 07/24/2010

First incident resulted in the car stalling multiple times, when started it would stutter, rpms couldn't get into normal range and when trying to put in gear it would stall out. The wrench light came on and I was finally able to start while keeping my foot on the gas pedal. Once driving could only reach 40mph. Since the first incident the frequency of problems has increased. Shortly after that first incident it started surging (rpm's rev way up when putting it in to gear) to the point that it happens now practically every time I start the car. At times, the surge is so strong that even with my foot firmly pressed on the brake, the car still moves. A huge concern of ours is in parking areas, it is very scary to have the car surge with people moving in front or in back of the vehicle. I recently had a collision with a tree while backing up. I firmly believe the car surged after I had started backing up resulting in the collision. I have called the dealership multiple times and understand that the throttle body linkage is thought to be the issue. My sister has a Lincoln LS that was recalled for this exact issue - she had the part replaced as a result of the recall even though she had never experienced the surging/stalling described. After doing some research, I found that this problem is much more prevalent than I thought and hope that a recall will be issued to get this corrected before someone gets hurt.

54 Car Stall problem of the 2007 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 07/16/2010

Vehicle would suddenly accelerate when idling or coasting (especially when turning) into a parking spot or driveway requiring hard braking to regain control of vehicle. Vehicle would stall when it came to a stop. Ford dealer diagnosed the problem as a "defective throttle body assembly" and charged $1200 for the repair and replacement. I recently discovered that Ford acknowledges this problem is frequent with the 2007 Freestyle model year and now performs a free throttle body "cleaning" to address the issue. Ford corporation and dealer refuse to refund the $1200 they charged for the "repair. ".

55 Car Stall problem of the 2007 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 07/14/2010

The contact owns a 2007 Ford Freestyle. The contact stated that the emissions control light and a wrench light illuminated at times. The vehicle would stall at a red light or stop sign. At times the vehicle would jerk and lunge forward. Diagnostics testing was performed on the vehicle; yet, no failures were found. The vehicle was not repaired. The current and failure mileages were approximately 70,000.

56 Car Stall problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 07/10/2010

My 2005 Ford Freestyle has been having problems with surging forward especially when moving slowly back and forth into a parking spot. Sometimes right after the idle surges, the idle will also suddenly drop, and now at times it even stalls. The surge causes the car to accelerate and I'm forced to modulate the brakes to avoid unexpected movement of the car. It usually happens when conditions are warm, the car is warm, and the ac is on. I have taken this car to Ford in the past, and they have not been able to correct it. I am taking it in again as the stalling problem has become more pronounced. When I googled for problems with Ford Freestyles doing this, I found others have registered complaints exactly the same as mine.

57 Car Stall problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 07/08/2010

05 Ford Freestyle surges at low speeds, particularly in reverse and/or when the ac is turned on. Car began stalling while driving. Auto mechanic indicated that the cause was a faulty throttle body and needed to be replaced but not available from Ford for many months. Very dangerous considering car can stall or surge at any moment.

58 Car Stall problem of the 2007 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 07/05/2010

We purchased this vehicle new 8/18/07 from palm coast Ford. In may or June 2010 I began noticing the car lunging when backing out of parking spots or once you have backed out and then placed into drive. I also encountered an issue with the car stalling if parked on an incline. On 7. 5. 10 the vehicle was left for several days with palm coast Ford for diagnostics and they claimed nothing was wrong with the car as they could not duplicate the "issues. " as this "issue" did not seem appropriate I visited the daytona beach Ford dealership but this was not a documented visit as was the palm coast Ford visit. The daytona Ford service manager indicated it was a just the way the car was designed to prevent stalling when backing up or pulling forward. So I lived with this problem hoping that it wouldn't lunge and hit someone in a parking lot. My brother finally rode with me and said this is not correct so I took the vehicle to a non-Ford repair shop who recommended a tune-up be accomplished. This occurred oct. 25, 2011 and corrected the problem. However, now whatever they accomplished with the tune-up is now wearing off as the vehicle has begun it's lunging problem again in the past few weeks. That's when I researched and found these incident reports so I want to report my problem to help you document there is definitely something going on with this make/model car. I like my Freestyle but there's definitely an issue with the lunging situation.

59 Car Stall problem of the 2007 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 07/01/2010

I drive a 2007 Ford Freestyle. This summer it started to have problems lurching forward. Specifically if in areas where I was sitting, like at a light, or in a parking stall. And more frequently during really hot days. After the wrench light would come on. A few times my car stalled and I had to wait to start it again. I had it fixed, under warranty, thankfully and they said it was sensor that needed to be replaced. But, I have heard that this is becoming a common occurrence with this vehicle and because it is such a safety issue I wanted to send my complaint in as well. My vehicle has 60,046 miles on it.

60 Car Stall problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 06/23/2010

Our 2006 Ford Freestyle has been giving us problems for the last two summers. It seems that when we run the a/c the car will sometimes surge forward when pulling into a parking space or coming to rest at a stoplight/drive-thru. There have been a couple close calls with hitting other vehicles in front of us. It has also stalled and the transmission light has come on numerous times. It seems that we must turn the car off to rest and then start it back up for the issue to be fixed. We are now very careful when we run the a/c because this seems to affect it somewhat. We recently took our car to the dealership and they told us we needed to replace the throttle body which would be $500 for the part without labor. We simply cannot afford to fix the problem now and are praying for safety. We will no longer buy a Ford and when contacting Ford we were told there was nothing they could do about the problem.

61 Car Stall problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 06/20/2010

2006 Ford Freestyle car surges/accelerates forward on its own then will stall. Told the problem is a faulty throttle body assembly.

62 Car Stall problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 06/03/2010

My 2006 Ford Freestyle surges forward (or back) when taken out of park. Occurs more frequently when placed into reverse. Occasionally, the car will also stall after surging when the brakes are slammed to stop the car and a yellow wrench light will appear on dash. Brought to dealership and they can not replicate. No codes. Has happend about 20 times in the past year.

63 Car Stall problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 06/01/2010

I purchased my 2006 Ford Freestyle in December 2009. As soon as the weather got warmer I noticed that when parking, backing up, or trying to stop, the vehicle would surge as if I still had my foot on the accelerator. Soon it also started surging/sputtering when I first started out and would occasionally stall, twice in heavy traffic. I took the vehicle to the Ford dealership to discover that the throttle body position sensor doesn't work properly & that all Freestyles were having the same problem. I was shocked to find that a new unit could be put in but was not covered as a recall and was going to cost $1000. As a single mom, that was just impossible. Luckily my disabled father was previously a mechanic and was able to use carb cleaner to clean the sensor and temporarily stop the problem. Since then, every spring the problem comes back and I have to have the throttle body unit cleaned several times before winter. Another problem I have with this vehicle is that the brakes wear out unusually quickly. I don't know if it's because of having to fight the throttle position sensor to stop the car, or if it's a flaw in the design of the brake system. I do know that when it starts to feel like they are wearing out I have to replace them ASAP because the more they get worn the faster they wear out, if that makes sense. Something I've just recently noticed is that the lights (interior, exterior, display, all of them) have been almost blinking. . . Getting brighter/dimmer and at the same time my a/c blows harder/softer, like they are surging as well. Upon further examination I found that the top and bottom driver's side motor mounts have cracked/rotted bushings. Ford should absolutely replace these throttle bodies without question; my children ride in my Freestyle every day and one close call is one too many. I want this fixed once and for all.

64 Car Stall problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 06/01/2010

The contact owns a 2006 Ford Freestyle. When the vehicle stopped the rpm's began to increase and decrease excessively. She also stated the vehicle would intermittently stall while driving forward or in reverse. When the vehicle stalled and was restarted, it would function normally. The failure was not diagnosed and the vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 75,000. The current mileage was 83,000. The VIN was unavailable.

65 Car Stall problem of the 2007 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 05/12/2010

The contact owns 2007 Ford Freestyle. The contact stated that the vehicle stalled while driving. If the contact was at a stand still the vehicle surged forward and made it feel as if they were hit from behind and shut off. The failure became progressively worse over time. The vehicle was not inspected. The failure mileage was 64000 and the current mileage was 67000.

66 Car Stall problem of the 2007 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 04/01/2010

My vehicle has 110,000 miles on it. It has for the past 4 years jolting/launcing forward. It sounds like an airplane. It stalls when the weather is hot. Waiting patiently for a recall, feel that will be driving down the road and transmission will fall to the ground. Worst car I have every owned. I have seen many complaints on this vehicle. Have also had at on point trouble turning the steering wheel. Thinking should trade car in, but recently paid the car off.

67 Car Stall problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 03/01/2010

Our Freestyle has experienced mild but worsening unintended acceleration for two years now, but it was always "mild" and did not cause the car to lurch forward even when the driver's foot was hard on the brake pedal. Then we had a new problem: no cold air from the ac at idle. We responded (6/11) to a mailed promotion from hertrich Ford (easton MD) for an ac "tune up. " they did nothing but add dye to our refrigerant and "clean" our air ducts with disinfectant. So we turned to the owners' forum, myfordfreestyle. Com, and quickly diagnosed the problem: a seized-up pressure control valve. Apparently Ford dealers refuse to perform this simple repair (part cost $40) and will only replace the entire ac compressor ($800 + labor). So we ordered the valve online and had a competent local mechanic replace the valve (1-hour labor plus cost of refrigerant). The ac is "good as new", but the unintended acceleration is now much worse. The incidents always occur at very low to no speed and when maneuvering the car (I. E. Parking, k-turning, etc. ). In all of these situations, both the ac and the power steering pump are demanding/drawing near-maximum power from an essentially idling engine, nearly stalling the engine; the electronic engine/idle control then kicks-in and hugely "over-reacts" by revving the engine to 2,000+ rpm. Even with your foot on the brake, an automatic in drive is going to surge quite far at 2000+ rpm. Please look at the myfordfreestyle. Com website: note that almost all of the complaints about unintended acceleration come during hot weather months and a few also note the problem is much worse with the ac on. It took us less than 30 minutes on the website to diagnose both the ac problem and unintended acceleration problem. It is inconceivable that Ford has not been aware of both of these problems for years. (surely Ford's customer relations staff monitor owner forums).

68 Car Stall problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 08/25/2009

I have a 2005 Ford Freestyle. I have had several lunging incidents where the car feels like it wants to lung forward or backward when backing out a parking space etc. . The first time I reported this incident was on 08/25/09. The next time was on 09/22/09. The dealer ordered a new throttle body. There were so many issues with the throttle body on this car that they were on back order. The dealer allowed me to drive for 5697 miles before the part arrived. I requested a rental under warranty and they said they could not justify a rental. On 02/08/10 my new throttle body was installed. Today is 02/22/2012 and I am having the same issue all over again. The Ford Freestyle is by far the worst vehicle I have ever owned. I am on my second set of (rear) brake pads and rotors. I have had the engine mounts replaced. Our air conditioner only works properly during the winter. I have found numerous pages of forums with people from all over the united states dealing with the exact same issues on the exact same cars. I recently discovered that a class action law suit has been filed against Ford for the throttle body issue. I have pages of documented issues with this car.

69 Car Stall problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 08/03/2009

I was in a parking space in my 2005 Ford Freestyle. When I put the car in reverse the engine revved up and the car went back very fast before stalling out. The dash board read "fail safe mode". I brought the car to my local Ford dealer and they said it's the throttle body - a part on back order until Nov 09 and costs $700 plus $300 labor ~ and they sent me home with my car!! very unsure of driving my vehicle until then with my 2 young children nevermind the dangers to other people. Ford issued a technical bulletin back in Dec 05 for this exact issue. A simple google search on line shows that their are many complaints regarding this issue. Why has there not been a recall yet. Clearly there needs to be an investigation into this issue that seems to be a common occurrence for the 2005 Ford Freestyle.

70 Car Stall problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 07/18/2009

When the vehicle was put in reverse the car would jerk and almost stall, then when shifted to drive the car would stall, when the car was shut off and the put into drive the car ran rough, I had taken it to the dealer the first time , they told me there was water in the box, I am a certified mechanic, and I never heard of this, I had taken the car back, to the dealer and they had the car for two weeks before they found out it was the throttle body, they didn't have one in stock, they searched across the country , not one to be found , they called Ford motor company , they didn't have one either, they said they are trying to find someone to make the part, , it is a die cast part, then it has to be machined then fitted with the sensors, , wire ports and vacuum sockets have to be machined, they are supposed to call me sept 30, 09 to let me know the status, I have a very bad feeling about this, I can almost guarantee the part is not going to be right, as of sept 30 09 they have had my car two months, I think they are going to wait until my extended warranty expires, then the car is good for nothing but a planter in the front yard, I have terminal brain cancer and need my car to carry my wheel chair around, the dealer first gave me a focus, then a taurus, I still cant lift my wheel chair to lay it flat in the trunk, I have asked for something comparable to my 2005 Ford Freestyle, , which I just lift my chair strait up and put it in, but what this whole problem has created, is a serious safety problem, if this part lets go on the freeway the car will jerk the wheels will lock up and hopefully the car behind is watching , otherwise , this is going to be a serious accident.
