36 Engine problem of the 2007 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 06/01/2010

I own a 2007 Ford Freestyle sel and am having a surging problem that is causing safety issues with driving the vehicle. It has surged so badly to the point that I have almost hit a car in front of me and almost hit a pedestrian while backing up. This has been a frequently reported problem and I understand that there is currently no fix for this problem. This happens every time I drive the car and has gotten progressively worse. The dealer ran a "test" and claimed it was a harness and that they "think" they fixed it which cost me 215. 00. It did not fix the problem. They claim the next step is to replace the throttle body. Apparently it is well known that this does not necessarily fix the problem either. That will cost me over 1000. 00 with no guarantee it will work. People state that cleaning the throttle body will alleviate the problem temporarily. This is unacceptable and needs to be addressed by Ford. This is a known, dangerous, problem which Ford is failing to own up to. I need to drive my car back and forth to work 5 days a week and need a safe, reliable vehicle to do so, however it is cost prohibitive to keep guessing what the problem may be.

37 Engine problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 05/30/2010

My 2006 Ford Freestyle occasionally experiences engine rev and sudden acceleration when operated at low speeds, usually when the ac is in use. Occurs only after idling or operating at low speeds in excess of 3 minutes. Each time I had sufficient clearance to avoid an accident, but it's been close. It has happened a total of 5 times in the past 6-8 weeks, pretty much since it had gotten warm enough to use the ac. Never happened in the past 3+ years of ownership until this year. Most recent occurrence was yesterday, 30 may 2010.

38 Engine problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 05/17/2010

When sitting idle with a/c on, engine revs on it's own and has gone into failsafe mode. When going from park to reverse, car lunges while in reverse causing a significant safety issue if the brake is not applied quick enough. The car also lunges forward when going from park to drive. The car has a tendency to lunge at a stoplight and then shut off and go into failsafe mode forcing a restart of the car once it has been taken out of drive and back into park. This has been going on for a few months, but we can't afford to fix it until next month. Even when we do go to order a new throttle body through Ford, which is what was recommended to fix the problem, it's apparently on a horrendous backorder until further notice.

39 Engine problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 05/15/2010

Sudden acceleration when putting car into drive or reverse. Seems to happen most often when running the ac. Parking and pulling out of parking spaces is very dangerous as acceleration happens at slow speeds when usually in close proximity to other cars and people. 2006 Ford Freestyle with 60,000 miles.

40 Engine problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 04/12/2010

Sudden acceleration when putting car into drive or reverse. Seems to happen most often when running the ac. Parking and pulling out of parking spaces is very dangerous as acceleration happens at slow speeds when usually in close proximity to other cars and people. 2006 Ford Freestyle with 60,000 miles.

41 Engine problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 01/11/2010

The contact owns a 2006 Ford Freestyle. The contact stated when shifting in reverse or drive, the contact noticed that the engine would exhibit an unusual increase in engine rpms. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was 50,000 and the current mileage was 72,000.

42 Engine problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 10/11/2009

Sudden loss of power while driving, has happened 3 times already. Happens when it's rainy, after not driving the car for a day. Can be really bad if happens on the highway - you step on gas and there's no response (the engine is running) - the car can essentially stop by itself in the middle of the road. Date of first incident reported, mileage at the time - 90,000.

43 Engine problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 08/18/2009

I bought a used 2005 Ford Freestyle and it has been a good car up until the past 6 months. Within those months I have had the engine mounting bracket break and the car, during stop and go driving, will randomly lunge forward or backward. When the car decides to lunge, even with your foot on the break, it is not stopped completely. I have contacted Ford about this issue and have done numerous hours of research myself. All of the research that I have done points to the throttle body going bad, however, Ford denies that there is any kind of a safety issue and that there is no recall. Ford will however, gladly charge me 600. 00 to replace it. When there is a safety problem with a vehicle, and random, uncontrollable lunges are a safety problem, the dealer should take responsibility and fix the defective part. With the hundreds of posts that I have read by other Freestyle owners with the same problems, most of which have been in the past 2 years, the part should defintely be recalled and fixed by Ford.

44 Engine problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 07/27/2009

2006 Ford Freestyle - throttle body on engine malfunctioning, causing engine to rev. On own and car lurches forward in forward or reverse.

45 Engine problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 07/21/2009

When I am driving my car with the air conditioner running, the transmission will surge when the car is at a stop, causing the car to lunge forward. Last summer I brought the car to the dealer to have them look into it and they said it is just due to the cvt transmission and the way it is tuned. They told me it was just characteristic of this type of engine. There was nothing that needed to be fixed. This happens every time the air is running. Most recently, my car lunged into another car in line at a red light causing rear end damage.

46 Engine problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 06/01/2009

While stopped and in gear at a light or while parking the engine revs and the vehicle surges forward (or backward if in reverse). This has happened several times in the past week almost causing damage to vehicles near-by. After the "surge" a yellow wrench light on the dash comes on. When the vehicle is restarted the warning light goes off and the vehicle operates normally.

47 Engine problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 05/15/2009

I have a 2005 Ford Freestyle with a cvt transmission. The car did not show any previous signs of problems or engine indicator lights. In may of 2009 the car had approximately 42,000 miles on it. I was driving approximately 30 mph when the transmission "slipped a rod" causing the transmission to explode leaving pieces of the transmission on the road way. During the explosion, pieces from the transmission damaged other parts of the engine. A new transmission was required.

48 Engine problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 05/10/2009

The vehicle will jerk and buck when backing up or going forward and then go into failsafe mode and shut off. This is very dangerous but yet there is no recall on this particular problem. It also accelerates by itself when in park for a long period of time and you can barely stop it. Almost hit someone because of it. Nothing has been done as of yet spoke with Ford and they said there is no recall so they're not fixing it.

49 Engine problem of the 2007 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 04/15/2009

The vehicle surged when coming off of idle, both in drive and reverse. This was especially noticeable when parking. This happened in the spring of 2009 and again in the spring of 2011. Both times the dealership replaced the throttle body, which did seem to resolve the problem. No accident or injury resulted from this problem.

50 Engine problem of the 2006 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 07/20/2008

Two separate occasions car has suddenly revved the engine. Once while attempting to back up, had to slam break to keep from smashing into row behind us. Once while setting at red light. Engine suddenly revved to 6k rpm, then dropped then surged again.

51 Engine problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 06/15/2008

Failure of roll restrictor bushing on top engine mount of 2005 Ford Freestyle.

52 Engine problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 06/03/2008

The contact owns a 2005 Ford Freestyle. While driving various speeds or approaching a complete stop, the vehicle excessively vibrates. It is difficult for the contact to maintain control of the vehicle. The dealer stated that the motor mount bracket and the stabilizer were defective. They further stated that the part (part# 5f926f055ca) to remedy the failure would be unavailable until August of 2008. The failure and current mileages were 45,000.

53 Engine problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 10/18/2006

My 2005 Ford Freestyle sel turned off when I turned a corner. I was turning a corner from one road to another and my Freestyle shut off and all of the gauge and warning lights came on. I pulled over, shut it off and turned it on again with no problem.

54 Engine problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 05/18/2006

2005 Ford Freestyle throttle body problem led to intermittent sudden loss of power in traffic, engine surging and car lurching at idle. Frequency of incidence increased during snowy weather. Took my local Ford dealer nearly 8 months to correctly diagnosis & repair problem. (date listed is first incident. ).

55 Engine problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 10/22/2005

I have been driving at various speeds when it happens. The vehicle just dies for no reason and without warning. This has happened at least 3 times. I have had it in the shop but they could not find anything wrong. I am afraid I or my son could be trying to pass another auto and this one die again and could cause a head on collision.

56 Engine problem of the 2005 Ford Freestyle

Failure Date: 09/01/2005

We just bought a used 2005 Ford Freestyle and the dealer we bought it from told us the awd malfunction alert would come on, but it would not stay on long enough for a mechanic to check what was wrong with it. We did notice the alert coming on, but on our 4th day of driving the vehicle, we were pulling away from a drive thru window and preparing to maneuver around two vehicles stopped in front of us and I had just taken my foot off the brake and not even touched the gas pedal when the car lunged forward. I applied the brake and then slowly took my foot away again and the car lunged and the engine died. The car still had enough momentum after the engine died to allow me to coast away from the two vehicles in front of me. I tried to start the car again and it lunged and died again. On the third try, it started and I was able to get out of the parking lot, but I was very frightened. I did make it home alright, but the awd malfunction alert stayed on and at times the alert would also read "failsafe engine mode". Also, the traction control alert icon lit up and a wrench was lit up under it in the instrument panel. We hope Ford will help Freestyle owners soon before someone has a terrible accident.
