One morning I started my car and the steering wheel locked up and a warning "power steering default assist" appeared. I turned the car off then restarted and the power steering was fine. This incident happened 2 more times in February. After the 4th or 5th warning appeared, I made an appointment with the dealership I purchased the car from. The informed me that they could not replicate the problem and that the could not detect a malfunction code. Last week it happened again not just once but twice while I was parked in a hospital parking deck. After the third try, the steering reset itself. The next day the power steering locked up and it did not reset. I had to have the car towed to the dealership. Now they want to stick me with at $2000. 00 repair stating that the problem is not covered under warranty and that Ford does not have a recall. I had the car in the shop three times in 2014 for a problem we thought was the rack and pinion. Again, because the service department could not duplicate the problem, the car now has had more damage to the steering. Thankfully, my son and I made it home across the mountain after his doctors appointment before the car's steering completely locked up.
Turning corner to park, loss of power steering. Service advancetrac light and also anti slip light came on. I took to dealer and they just reset codes. Worked for 3 days andnthen total failure of advanctrac. Suburban Ford now says I need whole new rack and pinion assembly. Looks like this is a major issue with units.
I placed my car in reverse and began to back up. The steering locked up and the message center indicated power steering assist fault. I turned the car off and re-started and the steering was normal. I drove a few hundred feet down the road and the steering locked up again. This time it remained locked. It was not easy, but I was able to drive to a near by Ford dealer. They said the rack and pinion steering went bad and needed to be replaced. I complained that I have heard there is a potential recall for this defect. The service writer told me don't believe everything you hear. The out of pocket cost to me for repair was $1,929. 44. I have been a Ford owner most of my life, but will never buy another one unless Ford makes good on this obvious defect.
2011 Ford Fusion has had multiple occurrences at low speed either parking or backing in reverse where steering locks up and a warning light for advance trac comes on as well as a warning message about "power steering failed assist. " ability to steer becomes very difficult. Vehicle has under 28,000 miles on it and has always been maintained by Ford dealership. Ford dealer says warranty has "timed out" and the repairs will cost $1,900 and are not covered by any warranty support. Diagnosed part by Ford dealership is replacement needed of the electronic rack and pinion. A case number and complaint was also documented to Ford motor company in December 2014.
A few days before the incident I had started my car and the steering wheel would not turn and felt stuck then a message popped up in my dash saying power steering fault. So I turned my car off and let it sit for about 2 minutes and started it back up and it drove fine. Then a couple days later I was arriving to a stop light and the steering just went out and luckily I was right next to a gas station and pulled into the side and turned the car off. I tried letting the car sit and see if it would re start fine just like the last time but this time when I started the car the message would appear again in the dash and the wheel was not turning. I tried multiple times turning the car off and on and it wouldn't change. I then had to get a tow truck and have it towed to a mechanic. I was told I had to replace the rack and pinion and it would take about 2 days for the parts and labor to be done.
Started my car and noticed error message on dash: “power steering assist fault”. I tried to turn the wheel and, sure enough, I had no power steering. After a few moments of confusion I turned the car off and then started it back up. The error was gone and my power steering had returned. I borrowed my girlfriend’s car and did not drive mine because I was going to be getting on the interstate. I took the car to the dealer the next day. They found no error code saved in the computer and were unable to reproduce the problem. The service rep said they were aware of this problem and that Ford was performing a 2-step troubleshooting process. Step 1 consisted of the tests they performed that day (“pinpoint test b for ctc c200c from pscm”). Step 2 (if problem recurred) would consist of installing a “new gear” inside the rack and pinion steering system. I told the service rep that consensus on aboutautomobile. Com site suggests the problem is in the epas (electronic power-assist steering) chip which is embedded inside the rack and pinion system – which can only be repaired by replacing the entire system (~$2000). So I asked what “step 2” (installing a new gear inside steering) would achieve. They had no explanation other than “Ford thinks maybe a faulty gear is causing the error”. My suspicion is the gear replacement will change the non-power steering gear ratio to make it easier to steer in the event of a repeat failure. I told him this “possible fix” (new gear) leaves me with little faith in driving my car. With so many reports of other’s having this happen to their Fusion while driving, and Ford having no certainty about installing this new gear being a definitive resolution, how am I to trust this won’t happen again while I’m driving? and am I really supposed to just wait until it does happen again? and just hope (pray!) that it’s not at a critical moment?.
The car was diagnosed as needing a new rack and pinion. Car makes loud noises when turning, stopping, and hitting small bumps. Possibility of power steering failure which can lead to crash.

When starting my car the power steering assist warning was displayed. When I shut the car back off and restarted it the problem went away. This happened about 3 times in about 3000 miles. About the fourth time this happened, shutting it off did not correct the problem. Service advancetrac was now also displayed. The car has no power steering or advancetrac at this time. The codes that were stored in the computer were for the pinion sensor failure. This sensor is used by both systems and is not replaceable by itself. The entire rack and pinion needs to be changed. The quote from my dealer was about $1400.
On three separate occasions within the last two weeks, (two while pulling out of my driveway, and once while leaving work), my steering has "locked" on me. The code that appeared on the dash was power steering assist fault. Not being too sure of what this was about we took it to the dealer who told us it was the rack and pinion that had gone out. The dealer then stated in order to fix it the rocker arms as well as the rack and pinion would have to be replaced to the tune of 2700 in repairs, that was not including labor and tax. While our vehicle is still under warranty, I feel this should be part of the power train, as without steering you cannot drive. This is also a huge safety issue. I cannot imagine how this would have gone if I had been in traffic, let alone if my children had been in the car. I have seen how many complaints there is about this situation. When will there be results?.
Driving at city speeds and the power steering completely fails. Turn the vehicle off and then on again and it fixes the problem. Drive some more and a few days later, it happens again. A few days later, it completely goes. Take the car to the local Ford dealer and am charged $1832. 35 for a new rack and pinion. Ladies and gentlemen, a rack and pinion won't fix itself if you turn the car on and off. I did some research on this problem on line at Fordfusionforum. Com. It seems to be an abs module, not the rack and pinion. Called Ford today and they said no reimbursement was possible. A new rack and pinion for a car with only 21 thousand miles on it? crazy.
The steering of the vehicle went out and locked while driving. This is a fairly new vehicle and I see some trending of complaints and similar descriptions of the failure. Extremely dangerous. Very thankful I was not on the highway. Was advised by Ford that rack and pinion needed replacement and they could not diagnose cause. $2000 repair. Not covered, outside warranty period of 36k miles. Seems to be more of a recall issue?.
Drove the car for about an hour, for about 20 miles. Parked the car. Turned on car after it was parked in a parking lot for about 1. 5 hours. As we attempted to pull out of our spot, it was apparent that the power steering was not working. Seconds later, the warning message appeared that there was a power steering failure, check the advancetrac system. We attempted to turn the car on and off to no avail. We added 3 bottles of power steering fluid and it didn't seem to fill up the tank nor did it help the power steering. Car was towed to the dealer, where they told us the rack and pinion needed to be replaced.
Power steering went out when driving. Had it fixed to the amount of 1300. 00 replaced the rack and pinion steering. Six months later while driving again the power steering failed again. Replaced the rack and pinion again. Not even two weeks later, and not having driven it no more than fifty miles, the power steering failed again. This is a serious problem.
I was driving home on the highway all of a sudden power steering froze. Warning light "service advancetrac" and "power steering failure came on. Next day 8/8/12, took it to the dealership where it still sits. Was told that the part that is bad (the rack and pinion) is on back order. Was just told today 8/17/12 that it will be October before the part will be shipped. Called Ford (company) and was told that my case was made a priority and I would have to wait until September 10th for a follow up (ridiculous). A customer who is spending this kind of money shouldn't have to wait a month to get help or wait two months to have his/her vehicle fixed. As of next Thursday Aug. 23 it will be 16 days without my car. I will then send a letter to the Ford for a "last chance to repair my car. " after that they have 10 days to fix it. After ten days I can demand a refund or a new car. If Ford doesn't comply then I can file a suit against Ford according to the mississippi lemon law (consumer protection division of the mississippi attorney general's office) Ford I will see you in court! sincerely a disappointed customer.
