Ford Fusion owners have reported 68 problems related to engine shut off without warning (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Ford Fusion based on all problems reported for the Fusion.
On more than three occasions, the vehicle's engine has abruptly shut down while driving or coming to complete stop when the gear was in the drive position. This has also occurred while driving over 60 mph on the expressway and it poses a grave danger and safety risk. When the incidents occurred the console display read "transmission not in park". After the first two incidents, the vehicle was returned to rod baker Ford in joliet, illinois for service (purchase location). They stated that they could not identify the problem, but I believe that they did not contact Ford or take the necessary steps to fix this serious defect. Most recently on June 22, 2015, the vehicle's engine shut down while coming to a stop when the gear was in drive. There is a serious and potentially life-threatening defect with my 2015 Ford Fusion and it must be repaired or replaced. I also suggest that Ford be informed to ensure that other affected vehicles are either repaired or replaced.

Well just purchased this car a month ago and already in the shop. It was jerking and losing acceleration as I was pressing the gas also it shut off on me while I was driving. The check engine and wrench light came on. So I did a vehicle report on the car and it brought up the engine, transmission diagnostics. Also the recall for the throttle body. Since I have warrenty I took it to the shop where they say it was the transmission. Changed it. Picked it up today still doing the same thing and light still on. Have to take it to the Ford dealership where they can check the throttle body. Called them and told them the issue, they telling me it's just saying I have a warrenty. So I had my fiance call and they said for us to call in the morning. They giving me the run around. I don't have money to waste. I have 2 children I have to get back and forth to school. I have classes I have to get back and forth to. When I purchased a car I didn't expect this. Second time purchasing a vehicle. Never had a problem. This problem needs to be fixed I can be driving with my children and god forbid this car continue to malfunction.

Vehicle shuts down while cruising on the freeway. The wrench light came on. Lost control of throttle and had to pull over to the shoulder. The car wouldn't rev up or anything. After turning the car off and starting it back up again it drove fine and the wrench light disappeared.
I was on my way to the Ford dealership for work to be done on my vehicle. Once I got in the parking lot I was driving about 20 mph, my car just shut off by it self. I had told the manager that I need to get my car checked out because it just shut off while I were still driving. They said they did a diagnosis check and couldn't find anything and that everything is okay. This concerns me because what if I'm driving in traffic and it shuts off again. This could be very dangerous. Please help!!!!.

I was exiting a freeway when I experienced my first problem. In the middle of traffic, my car shut off and I lost most functionality of the vehicle. The dashboard displayed an alert ¿transmission not in park. I was driving normally and did not press any buttons or make any adjustments to the gears. He only thing that was functioning was the brakes and steering wheel, I had no control over the gas. The problem happened again the next day. I was speeding up to get on to the freeway when my car shut off again, displaying the same message. However, this time, because it was night, the lights powered off and it was difficult to see what was ahead of me. I turned on my hazards and was forced to pull over to the side, place the car in park and restart the ignition and continue on. I called about the issue as soon as the Ford dealership opened the next day. They told me to bring it right in. However, the problem happened again before I had a chance to bring it in. I was driving on the freeway when I was trying to pass an 18 wheeler. I successfully passed the truck, but after I did, the power shut off again and I was sandwiched between two 18 wheelers. The next day, I brought the vehicle into the dealership. They took it off my hands for about a week while they tested it for problems. I received a call and the representative said that they fixed a cable that appeared to be loose that might have led to the problem, and also gave the car a software update. I was pleased with the response. A week later I was driving back home when the car shut off again. I immediately drove the car to the dealership. I called the Ford care team and they said they would open a case for a buyback. On sept 23, I received a voicemail from the dealership saying that they could not fix the vehicle because when they tested it it was functioning as it should. They can and will not fix or replace the vehicle.

The factory ignition coils began to short against the interior walls of the engine head above the spark plugs. As they shorted it burn the power control module (pcm). With no pcm my spark plugs failed to light, causing my engine become flooded with gasoline, which washed away the lubricants on my cylinder and heads causing all of my cylinders and heads to become damaged. As this happened before I was able to pull over my engine shut off. Causing me to lose power steering and all of the other electrical functioning components. Luckily I was on a fairly quiet road and at somewhat low speeds, but for the many others that have or could experience the same problem might not have been or be as lucky. 2006 Ford Fusion 3. 0l v6.

My car shut off while at a red light when trying to give it gas. Restarted after a few tries. Had the battery and alternator checked and both were fine. It continued to give issues and finally would shut off while going between 1-10 mph. Took it to Ford to have a test ran on it, and they showed it was a faulty throttle body and would need to be repaired. We purchased the part and paid for a repair for this even though 725,000 other vehicles in the same make have been having these issues. It is quite frustrating.
Driving up a hill when my engine lost all thrust, then the wrench and battery light turned on. Vehicle engine shut down in the middle of an intersection. I shut off the car and restarted it with the same end result. Took car to a mechanic and I now have to get my throttle body replaced.
Basically the car shut down driving down the pennsylvania turnpike on Friday morning at 65 mph, the car totally shut down. This happened 2 times at 65 mph and one time at about 25 mph while entering the turnpike. I was very lucky that the tractor trailer behind me going about 70 mph, saw something was wrong with my car and had time moved over into the passing or he would have hit my car and killed me. This happen one more time during my morning commute at that speed. I took my car yesterday to the Ford dealer and he repaired the throttle body motor assembly. I have notified Ford customer service case # cas-#0545001-r9v2p4, but I believe this is an immediate life & health safety recall issue. Sincerely michael m. Smith 400 edgewood drive exton, PA. 19341.
Car loses power and stalls at city or highway speeds (have to pull over). Car shuts down when idling. Ford was contacted by our service center and we're told we need a new throttle body, but they are on back-order. There are at least 5000 orders ahead of us. Service person said he is not aware of a recall for this problem. Car was purchased new.
The first incident I was driving down the highway doing 55 mph and my car shut off. I was able o start the car again and get out of the road. I replaced the battery since later that day my card wouldn’t turn on. The second incident I was headed to the airport on my morning commute; I came to a stop sign and the car accelerated and the engine began to reave very loudly then I my car stalled out. I have my car in the shop and they advised that I have a bad throttle body and it will require replacement, the cost is $345. 00 for the part and $190. 00 for the labor. All while I am still paying on the loan.
I was driving home from the store today on a 4 lane road and was making a left turn when the car powered down to 1 mph and stayed there. Thankfully the car I turned in front of had plenty of time to slow down to avoid me. I traveled two blocks home as the car only allowed me to go 1 mph with the wrench light on and with a slightly jerky ride. I called my local repair shop and they got me in to take a look at it. I assumed bad gas or a fuel line needed to be cleaned, but also thought it was odd that a three year old car needed any work. They troubleshooted and cleaned the fuel lines and took out the moisture they thought was causing this. The mechanic then took it for a test run in the local parking lot where the car shut down on him and once he restarted the car ran fine. He said no codes came up but with investigating online he found it to be the fuel throttle needed to be replaced and he would call me for an estimate and that I might want to join the complaint issue online. I will receive my estimate on Monday. Ford really needs to take care of their customers. I have no problem paying for a wear and tear issue. I do have a problem with companies ignoring customer complaints and not tackling the issue before a death insues. Is it really worth someone being severly injured or killed over saving your name? funny part is that I choose to go back to an american made car after wanting to support the recovery and fellow family members that work for Ford. I will never forgive Ford if they do not take care of this and if my car is $400. 00 or more in repair. This has happened 4 times now and I am afraid to drive the car. Please help.
Last Wednesday, 7/24/13, I was on the interstate coming home from work in the far left hand lane when my engine shut off and put me in a really bad situation. I had to cross multiple lanes of traffic, while not being able to accelerate, to get to get back to the shoulder. The car seemed to being working fine, but when I hit the gas there was no response. The lights, gauges, and radio still worked and a wrench light came on. I was nearly rear ended twice and barely made it to the shoulder. Today, 7/30/13, on my way to work the same thing happened. Thankfully this time I was not on the interstate, but rather on a busy city street, and was able to quickly and safely get out of the way.
I was traveling about 45mph when the car just shut off. Had to coast to side of the side of the road almost got rear ended. This has happened at least three more times in less than a week. The service department claims to know nothing about this problem. I'm sure the service managers are told to act dumb about this issue. I have read that other people have had this same issue. What will it take to get action, someone hurt or killed??.
I was driving in the right lane of a major, heavily traveled (with many tractor trailers), divided highway, traveling at a speed of between 55 and 60 mph. All of a sudden, without warning, the engine seemed to shut down. I could not accelerate; the engine would not respond. This was a very scary situation as trucks and cars had to break, while I steered the car to the narrow shoulder. The car didn't seem to lose power steering and the engine was still running (tach showed 900 to 1000 rpm). However, engine was totally unresponsive to my depressing the accelerator. I shut off the engine, put the flashers on and waited a few minutes and attempted to start the engine. The engine started normally, and I was able to pull out onto the highway. However, after driving about one-quarter mile, the same engine shutdown occurred. Called aaa and had the car towed. The auto repair center checked for trouble codes. The throttle body assembly had failed and had to be replaced. I have not had a problem since the repair was made. Subsequent to the repair, I checked on the internet to see if anyone else had this problem. I was very surprised to see that this problem is not uncommon to Ford owners. I was gratified to see that your agency has opened an investigation into the matter. I called customer service at Ford motor company to see if there has been a recall. Ford customer service said there was no recall and did not acknowledge that there is a problem with the throttle body unit. I then called the service department of a local Ford dealership. The service rep said that "they have seen problems with the throttle body unit", but confirmed that there has been no recall.
I was driving my 2010 Ford Fusion on the interstate at approximately 65 mph when without warning the car began to jerk and decelerate. A wrench light came on. I was not able to accelerate at all. I was able to get the car safely off of the road at which point it shut off. Upon restarting the engine the car continued to jerk and the engine light came on. I waited approximately 10 minutes and restarted the car again. This time the engine light stayed on but the car was driveable and I was able to make it home. I had my car to the Ford dealership July 1 and was told that the car needed a new throttle body which the dealership said was on backorder. Upon learning this, I researched this issue on the internet and found that others have had this some thing happen to them. This is a major safety hazard and it needs to be corrected before someone is not able to get their car off of the road when this situation occurs.
Was driving down highway approx 40 mph and vehicle shut off, coasted to side of rode, turned key twice, no luck, then 3rd time it cranked back up, then drove slowly another mile to home. Scared me, having recently been in an auto accident (no fault of my own) could have easily been rear ended again!!! maybe a throttle body issue that needs to be recalled???.
Was driving interstate speeds and vehicle shut down, wrench symbol came on on dash board. Has happened 3-5 times since, in traffic or at highway speeds. Extremely dangerous.
While vehicle was in motion on highway, there was a sudden error light flash and then vehicle shut down. Motorist was able to pull vehicle to the side of the road. Upon mechanic's inspection, it was found that an engine coil was blowing a fuse, causing the vehicle to shut down.

While driving to work one day my car shut off right after a turn going down a hill, the dash was illuminated and no lights were on other than the dash. I put the car into park and turned it off then started it right back up, it ran fine after that. There is another issue as well though, while driving it hesitated by shifting at higher rpm's than it should and took it to dealer on Monday February 25, 2013 and they still have it with no explanation as to why it did any of those things that I mentioned. The only thing that the service guy says is "well until it is billed out I do not know what is going on with the car. " I am very frustrated and just bought this certified pre owned two weeks ago. There should be a lemon law on certified pre owned cars, this is not cool. It has caused a headache for me and now I am stuck paying for a car I cannot even drive right now.
On the morning of February 7th 2013, I noticed the vehicle's acceleration and deceleration was ridged and jumpy. Prior to this problem, the vehicle has shut off randomly approximately 3 times while in drive and in motion. This prompted me to bring the vehicle in for maintenance at a Ford dealer auto center. They determined the power takeoff unit and drive shaft were faulty, replaced both parts and returned the vehicle to me on February 15th 2013. On March 18th 2013, the vehicle shut off again while driving at highway speeds on a busy road, forcing me to navigate cautiously to a shoulder. The engine light and wrench light were illuminated this time. I shut the vehicle off, waited 5 minutes, and restarted. The engine light remained on and the vehicle was drivable. I quickly returned the vehicle to the previous Ford auto center, in which they discovered the throttle body was faulty. They replaced the throttle body and returned the car to me on March 21st 2013. On March 22nd 2013, the engine cover fell off while the car was in motion, I immediately returned vehicle to the previous Ford auto center, they replaced with new engine cover. As of today, the vehicle is again showing hesitation at acceleration and deceleration, rpm dash meter needle bounces plus minus 500rpms during acceleration and deceleration. Breaking is not smooth or instant, the vehicle tends to jump during breaking. At coasting speeds, the vehicle also jumps. These are similar problems that occurred prior to the vehicle spontaneously shutting off. This problem is alarming and an extreme safety hazard to yourself and others around you, notably at high highway speeds. Ford has been presented with the issue and has claimed that the issues are all unrelated, even though the vehicle shuts off each time. I am concerned for my safety and the safety of others driving this model, 2011 Ford Fusion sel awd.
My Ford 2010 Fusion, when at a traffic light, stop sign, etc. . Would stale when I put my foot on the accelerator with very little response. Then it will finally pick up speed. I have not experience the "engine shut down" as of yet and I hope I don't. After reading the other "complaints", now I know what the problem is. Will take care of it as soon as possible!.
While driving to work on the highway 65-mph the engine shuts off without warning, the instrumental panel starts acting up as if you are turning on and off the key. They found a lose wire to the instrumental cluster on the second time they replaced the instrumental cluster. It has been taken back six times and now the dashboard shuts down and I lose lights, signals, and other electronic features. I have lost power steering and brakes in between. They offered me an extended warranty??? it is a shame that a consumer who buys a car from a dealership has to go through the grinder just to get out of their lemon. I just want to get out of this vehicle.

Actuator control system: throttle plate stuck open - vehicle shut down on freeway would not start only after 5 min wait then happened again 10 min later stopped again waited 5 more min next morning car started fine then after a few mins of driving stopped again having trouble staying on. . .
1st time engine @ 60 mph just shut down, came to stop, restarted and thought all ok, thinking maybe bad gas. 2nd time wife driving, while making turn in front of traffic engine just quit again, came to stop and was able to restart. Next day decided to try to drive to dealer. Engine quit 3 more times while driving to local Ford dealer. They said they could not even look at it for 6 days. Drove home, engine stopped one more time. I finally I had it towed to dealer 30 miles away. Good news: they quickly diagnosed as a throttle body assembly bad news it would take 3-4 weeks for them to obtain part as so many, many Fords were experiencing the same problem. . I had to rent a vehicle . . Very dangrerous situation and this should absolutely be a recall from Ford. I have gotton no where with dealer or so called "customer servce". . I was told by the 800 cs dept that they had never heard of this problem. I go on-line and find hundreds and hundreds of complaints with the exact same issue. I want reimbursement (I have all my out of pockets costs and receipts) and a formal apology.
There is a serious problem with this car in that it will completely shut down while traveling at any speed whether 15 mph or 70 mph, with no warning. This could cause serious harm especially traveling on the interstate where you can be hit from behind at a high rate of speed. The car will restart after a few minutes, but when doing so will cancel the engine service code p2111 so that the dealer cannot id the problem. If you experience this problem, make them keep driving it until it happens to the service person. Issue is defective throttle body -potentiometer. The computer can't tell how much the throttle is open so it shut down. My teenager was driving this car and was almost re-ended twice. Very dangerous problem. Car should be recalled for this issue!!!!!.
On Saturday June 16th I was traveling north bound I-75 from rockcastle CO. Ky to madison CO ky which is about 45 miles. Was traveling 65 miles mph and suddenly the engine shut off. There was a semi in the right lane, we were in the middle lane with one semi in back of us. We were able to coast to the emergency side of the road. The semi in back of us locked his brake and almost hit us. I shut the car off and restarted it and drove in the slow lane and it happened 3 more times. I then left the car at my mother in-law's house and borrowed a car to get home in as I was afraid to drive it and put myself at risk plus someone's life at risk. On Monday, 6-18-12 I got the car to the dealership and the mechanic test drove it and it happened to him. I pulled up on the internet and saw that I am not the only one this has happened to. It definitely is a life ending crash getting ready to happen. Of course my vehicle is out of warranty as of 35000 miles, but that is not my issue. I would hate to see someone lose their life due a malfunction of a throttle body. Ford needs to step up to the plate and admit that know of this issue and fix it before someone loses their life or a child's life. The foreign makers such as Toyota stepped up and Ford needs to do so also. This is the fourth automobile I have brought from them and try to stay with the american made cars. Safety should be their concern instead of the almighty dollar.
2010 Ford Fusion car stalled and engine shut off in heavy traffic 2 mths ago. Had to pull over. Cranked it was fine. Days later, engine begins to crank every few days, slow at first but will start. Been going on since. 3 wks today, car powers down while driving 65 mph this morning on main int. Hwy. The wrench light came on dashboard. Car would not accelerate when I pressed the gas peddle. Had to "coast" to er lane. Car was running, but could not accelerate at all. When stopped, turned car off. Recranked engine. Wrench light went off, and drove to work fine. Took to dealer today. While explaining the issue, an employee overheard and said "do you drive a Fusion?" I said yes, he said its your throttle body. He says this without even looking at the car! confirmed it was throttle body part after inspection. Part was not in stock. Told I could drive car home. They would call when part comes in. Dealer called this evening and said my manf. Warranty was past time, and additional warranty tech would not cover throttle body part. Part expense $261 plus taxes and 30 minutes labor time to install. I'm disturbed to know Ford is aware and others are having this problem and I am extremely scared to drive this car knowing it stalled at 65 miles an hour!!! someone needs to pull these cars off the road and make the repairs to these vehicles. I have never owned an american made car. This is my first one. Some first impression. I will be trading this car as soon as I can. I am just so disappointed in Ford claiming the "built Ford tough" motto. This isn't tough, its dangerous! I've never owned a car where being less than 2yrs old, a part already has to be replaced? seriously?? Ford should pay attention to their complaints. How many complaints does it take to get a recall??????????? mine makes number 320. . . . . . . . A recall should be after 2 people are claiming the same thing.
I was driving down the highway at 70 mph when my car shut off I was almost hit by another car then a semi truck because I didn't know what had happened. My car had no throttle response. After having my car looked at it, it was diagnosed to have a bad throttle body. So I did some research and its a common thong with 2010 Ford Fusions, but for some reason Ford won't either find a way to figure out why they seem to have throttle bodies that are malfunctioning and putting their drivers lives in danger. They need to recall this before it causes someone to lose their life. For people who don't know it cost about $500 to get it fixed if your vehicle isn't under warranty.
I have a 2010 Ford Fusion s, I was driving home for christmas break when my car shut off and had no throttle response. I didn't drive the vehicle for like five days and the car was fine but it started back up in janurary and again in the beginning of March. It has a code of p211 which is the throttle body issue. I have done some research on the problem and multiple Ford Fusion's are having the same issues as I am. For some reason Ford is trying to avoid hearing the issue on the fact that they have faulty throttle bodies. It is a saftey issue when you are traveling down the highway or interstate at 60-70 mph and all of sudden your car no longer has a throttle response. You have to pull off the road shut your car off and restart it. This doesn't fix the problem it just does it all over again within the next mile or two. Ford should realize the issue and make a recall for the throttle body. There are people throughout the united states that are paying between $400-$600 out of their pocket if their car is no longer under warranty to fix a common problem that people are having with Ford Fusions.
Since I purchased my Ford Fusion in 2010, I have had nothing but problems. Not only mechanical but, also with the dealership. My car shuts off while driving all the time. Additionally, it shakes and jerks. The dealership initially was responsive to my calls and concerns. For the last few months, that has not been the case. The car has been in the shop five different times, to include today ? all for the same thing as listed above. Each time, I was told they had fixed the issue. In addition, they said they would wash/fill up the gas to where I left it. This was done correct once. At one point, my car was in the shop for a month. They decided the transmission needed to be replaced ? which they would do free of charge. On the day this repair was to be made, they all of a sudden changed their minds and reneged on that commitment - claiming they had found the real issue which, as it turns, out they did not. When I had come to pick up my vehicle, I found a pack of cigarettes in my middle console all half smoked. Obviously, someone was smoking in my car which should not be allowed. Since I was getting nowhere, the service manager suggested I file a claim with the Ford replacement car program. I was told by dj, koon? sales manager, the replacement process should take only a week. He even suggested that I should not make another payment on my vehicle. I started this claim process on December 1, 2011. I was finally sent a breakdown worksheet from corporate, in particular, jeff terrell, on February 3, 2012. He stated I would need to pay nearly $6,000 up front for the used miles on my car. Also, he said in order for them to set me up with a replacement vehicle, I would have to take out another loan. I wrote him back immediately on February 3, 2012 and again today, February 7, asking how he came to that amount. I have yet to hear back from him.
