In may 2014 Ford recalled 900,000+ vehicles due to an issue with the power steering torque sensor. It affected escape, mariner, and explorer models (including model year 2011 on all vehicles). I have a 2011 Ford Fusion and my vehicle has had the same issue several times. Around five times when I've put my car in reverse the power steering has gone out. The first three times it happened there were no lights or anything that prompted me there was an issue. I put the car in park, shut it off and restarted it and then the power steering was back working. The next time it happened, the warning message board on the dash showed a message that said "power steering default". I took the car to the dealer and they said it would cost $1,800 to fix as the torque sensor code appeared in their diagnostic test. The entire steering column needed to be replaced. I've contacted Ford and told them I'm having the same issue as the recalled vehicles; however, they said that because the issue isn't prevalent in my model and year vehicle that they'll just look into a "goodwill" discount on the repair. I've asked them to replace the steering column at no charge which they won't do which confuses me as I'm certain the technology they use in all their vehicles is similar, if not the same, and thus if they fixed the issue in other cars they should fix it for me as well at no cost. I'm now waiting to hear back from Ford or my dealer as to what discount they'll offer off the total repair cost - this however doesn't seem right to me so I'm contacting NHTSA in hopes they can provide some assistance.

I was driving sw bound on hwy 20 in loganville, GA when my car surged and powered off at 50 mph¿the vehicle turned off on a very busy road. I just bought this car last year. This is the second time this has happened¿this first time it happened Ford replaced my entire steering column. I had zero steering capability, the engine was off and unresponsive and all of my electronic panels went dark except for a message saying "transmission is not in park" and the engine warning light (yellow) came on. I was able to hit the hazard lights and barely inch to the right side on the highway. There was a truck behind me that had to make an evasive lange change maneuver to the left in order to avoid collision. Once I came to a stop I immediately turned my video camera on my phone and started documenting what was happening in the vehicle. I have this video readily available for you if you need it to further your investigation.

2011 Ford Fusion sel, 26k miles: power steering assist fault locked up my vehicle on a main road, sending myself and my little sister into oncoming traffic during our commute home. Now my car has no power steering, and I'm left trying to comprehend just how lucky we are to be alive. There have been recalls on the 2011 Ford escape for the exact same problem I am facing. As I understand it, the power steering assembly/module is the same, if not extremely similar to that in my vehicle. It's time someone added a recall for the 2011 Ford Fusion to the recall list of faulty power steering columns. . . Before someone like my little sister gets hurt. I sincerely hope whoever ends up reading this takes it upon his/herself to protect those of us who still invest our money and well-being with Ford products. -thomas h. Jones.
The advance trac power steering on my 2012 Ford Fusion cut out in the middle of a left hand turn leaving a traffic light. It had done this once before, a year prior at around 34000 miles while it was still under warranty, and the dealership sent me away telling me it was an isolated incident as the steering recovered when I turned the vehicle on and off. This time, when I reset it, it cut out again driving through the parking lot at the shopping center I was at less than 500 yards travelled later. This time when I took the vehicle in for repair they acknowledged the issue was real and claim the entire steering column needs replaced or this will continue to happen. They will not cover it under warranty despite the fact I had made a claim related to this exact issue while it was under warranty previously. The steering has thankfully only cut out for me at low speeds and in places I was able to quickly and easily pull over even without power steering. If this were to occur at higher speeds or in places I was less able to pull over I am not sure I could have maneuvered the vehicle safely for any extended amount of time.
On starting the car, the steering column was locked up and would not turn. Towed to Ford dealership, they assessed that the whole steering column had to be replaced. Cost me $2000. This is a common problem and I am surprised that Ford has not issued a recall.
The contact owns a 2011 Ford Fusion. The contact stated that while driving 25 mph, the steering wheel became difficult to turn. The dealer was contacted who advised the contact to merged to the side of the road and turn off and restart it. The failure recurred and was towed to the dealer. The technician diagnosed that the steering column and a torque sensor were defective and needed to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 38,000. The VIN was not available.
2007 Ford Fusion - cracks in front subframe effecting steering
yesterday I was informed by a Ford dealer, don reid Ford in maitland florida, that the likely explanation for the "notchy" feel in my steering wheel on my 2007 Ford Fusion is probably due to cracks at weld seams in the front subframe of the vehicle. I was told by another Ford service tech that the issue could also be a bad steering column intermediate shaft as a result of this condition. This vehicle is 1 1/2 years old and so far the dealer is thinking it is not covered under warranty. I was told by this Ford tech that the weld cracking problem is a "known issue" at Ford and he agrees 100% that it is a safety issue. I can feel looseness / clunking in my steering when going over bumps and turning. This is not an alignment issue since, on the Ford Fusion, the front alignment is not adjustable. I am very concerned as to the safety of the vehicle and am being told it may cost over $1,000 to repair this obvious manufacturer defect. I first noticed this issue a few weeks ago on Friday, August 1st while making a 3 point turn in a tight parking lot. The condition is progressively getting worse. Please help.
