The power steering assist warning light illuminated while driving over 35 mph. On another occasion, the steering wheel failed to respond, and the vehicle spun out and the vehicle came to a stop in the right lane. The vehicle was taken to a tire shop where it was diagnosed with rack and pinion failure, and the vehicle was aligned. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure persisted. The contact then took the vehicle to an independent mechanic who diagnosed the vehicle with a steering assist sensor fault. The brakes were calibrated; however, when the contact depressed the brake pedal, the brakes failed to respond, and the contact stopped depressing on the accelerator pedal to have the vehicle slow down to stop the vehicle. The dealer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired for the most recent failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 87,361.

5 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2010 Ford Fusion

Failure Date: 01/10/2021

I received an alert for power steering assist fault and immediately had no power steering. Now I have to purchase a rack & pinion assembly for the car because no longer safe to drive. I see where you all have already completed an investigation but Ford states they have not completed theirs. How long does this take? this part and labor to have this completed is very expensive!.

6 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2011 Ford Fusion

Failure Date: 12/30/2020

When I brought the 2011 Ford Fusion the power steering fault came on and went on and off and had car looked at they did not detect a problem this was like 11/2018 and then later on in fact years later the power steering fault came on and off and finally stayed on without going off. It was difficult to steer car. Was on the road had to be very careful driving home. I had the car looked at and found out that there was a recall but it has since expired for a rack and pinion and that I would be liable for the cost to repair. The first part of the recall was to try to reset it but in my case it did not work so I was out of 160 and had to pay for further repair a rack and pinion, which was in upwards of 1500. Had I known about the recall I would've got it repaired before I brought the car. They told me the recall had expired in 2019 they could not repair it. I am very disappointed in they way they handled it I think they should have at least covered the parts.

7 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2010 Ford Fusion

Failure Date: 10/20/2020

The rack and pinion is starting to get hard and making noise. My steering is not functioning as it suppose to be. Engine is starting to shake while on red light. My a/c doesn't work and lights do not work from the inside.

8 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2012 Ford Fusion

Failure Date: 10/07/2020

My car is having trouble with the power streeting wheel. As I was driving my car the wheel tighten up and it was hard for me to turn. Power streering at fault is what flashes on the dashbored. I use my car to go to school and work and right now it's hard for me to do so. I went to the car dealer ship and they want two grand to fix it! they say I need rack and pinion.

9 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2012 Ford Fusion

Failure Date: 10/04/2020

I was driving my 2012 Ford Fusion sel down a street on October 4th 2020 near where I live and this alarm started going off and it alerted me the power steering assist fault and I lost my steering and hit a curb. Luckily I didn't do anymore damage or hit someone. I drug it home and had a wrecker pick it up to take it to the nearest Ford dealership. They diagnosed it as a faulty steering box or rack and pinion, it all needs to be replaced to the tune of 1868. 00. The Ford dealership found a recall from 2015 that describes this same issue in 2011-2012 Ford Fusions but for some reason my VIN was not included, maybe by mistake seems how it's the same part that Ford knew was causing problems. It's just a good thing that I didn't hit someone and kill them with Ford knowing this was a issue with these cars and didn't do anything about it. I hope you will do your do diligence on these issues and fix every one of them before someone does get hurt. Trying to fork over 1800 in a time like this is very tough and I hope you can make it right with all involved. Thanks for your time. Marc sobeski.

10 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2010 Ford Fusion

Failure Date: 09/04/2020

My power steering went out on the highway I purchased the car with no problems maybe a wheel alignment now my power steering isn't working and in order to fix it the car shops are saying replace the entire rack and pinion which is expensive. I have also looked up this issue and many people share this same issue and nothing is being done about it.

11 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2012 Ford Fusion

Failure Date: 09/03/2020

2012 Fusion sel, 3. 0l v6, 112,000 miles: on 9-3-2020 I was pulling out of the local shopping center. As I was proceeding it appeared that the engine had stalled. In actuality the engine did not stall and there was a fault message displayed "power steering assist fault". I proceeded home with great difficulty steering the car. On the way home I stopped at the local autozone car care center to review the owner's manual for a possible explanation and remedy. The manual stated that there was no service for the power steering system on this model Fusion (fully electric). I proceeded out of the parking lot and as soon as I went forward a second alarm displayed "service advancetrac". Now the display toggled between these two alarms. The day prior to my service appointment I noticed that when I started the car only the "service advancetrac" alarm displayed, but the vehicle still had no power steering. The following morning I took the vehicle to the Ford dealership for diagnostics. Later that day I was contacted by the service advisor who informed me that the power steering rack and pinion assembly needed to be replaced. The cost was going to be in excess of $2000. By now I had done some research into this and found that there was a recall for this very problem (NHTSA id# 15v340000, Ford id# 15s18). I relayed this information to the Ford service advisor and he informed me that "yes there was a recall but my VIN# was not included". I am at a loss as to how this vehicle could not be included. The vehicle is very well maintained and has only 112,000 miles of mostly highway driving. I can say with a great deal of certainty that had this occurred on the highway, especially at an exit or entrance ramp, there would have been a different outcome to this. At this time, even after the repair, I am going to be unsure and worried about the vehicle loosing steering control.

12 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2010 Ford Fusion

Failure Date: 08/24/2020

I was driving my 2010 Ford Fusion se on a highway and suddenly the steering wheel locked up and became extremely difficult to turn. I was fortunate enough to be able to turn into a local shopping mall. An alert popped up in the dash that said service electrical power steering. I called my local Ford service company and the service technician explained that this was a recall on the rack and pinion/ steering gear for my car model. He explained to me that this was a recall and unfortunately a common issue with the vehicle I had. However, I found out that my VIN was not included in this recall, and was informed that I would have to pay for the repairs myself. I called the Ford company and explained to them the issue thinking that they would simply add my vehicle and I was told that my VIN wasn't included. I explained to them how they could call my local dealership where my car was being repaired to confirm what I said was true, however, I was told they wouldn't do that. I asked to speak to a supervisor and the supervisor called a day later. She told me that at this time my car would not be added to the recall. I asked her how and why they came to this conclusion and she informed me that this was protocol. I asked her if they did any research into why my VIN was not added the first time, or double checked to see if there was an oversight as to why my VIN was not added and she told me that they did not look into my issue or claim, she just listened to the call, and called me back to inform me that at this time the would not add my car to the recall list. I asked her who decided to add the vehicles was it Ford or NHTSA and she informed me she did not know. I again ask her how I can get someone to review this issue as this is a serious recall and matter. I explained to her that I could have been on the interstate when the steering went out. She told me to contact NHTSA.

13 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2015 Ford Fusion

Failure Date: 08/13/2020

I was driving at appx 30 mph on a city street, upon starting to stop, I hear a loud noise and I lost the ability to steer my car. The bolt that holds the power steering assist motor to the rack and pinion broke and left me with no steering capabilities. Ford issued a recall (15s14) for this bolt corrosion problem. It was replaced in 2016, however the same exact problem occurred again and upon inspecting bolt it was determined that it was in fact corroded and cracked 3/4 of the way before the final break. This is a serious safety issue within the Fusion line of cars, the recommended "fix" action that was taken is not adequate to mitigate this problem from further happening and potentially causing serious consequences to drivers who assume this issue has been "fixed" because they've taken their car in for recall measures. This issue will cause serious damage or loss of life if not remedied by Ford immediately. ## #vpic# 1 - check digit (9th position) does not calculate properly; 4 - VIN corrected, error in one position only (indicated by ! in suggested VIN), multiple matches found; 14 - unable to provide information for all the characters in the VIN. #vpic#.

14 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2010 Ford Fusion

Failure Date: 07/23/2020

Power steering fails while driving, was on the interstate and it just stopped working. I was able to manually steer vehicle with no power steering, however if this had happened to my wife or daughter they would have lost control, it was not easy. Vehicle has been checked out and the rack and pinion with the electronic power steering is bad. I had this replaced at approx 70k miles and the replacement has now failed. Obviously there is a design flaw.

15 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2011 Ford Fusion

Failure Date: 07/21/2020

16 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2010 Ford Fusion

Failure Date: 06/30/2020

The vehicle has no power steering or traction control. It is displaying the power steering assist fault and service advance traction control. According to the dealer, the only way to correct the problem is replacing the rack & pinion which is $1400. I've researched a recall on 2011 Fusion's with the same problem. Why is the 2010 excluded? I do not feel the vehicle is safe to drive, but is the only transportation I have. The fault occurs all the time, sitting, driving, etc.

17 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2012 Ford Fusion

Failure Date: 05/02/2020

The electric rack and pinion has failed for the second time I contacted Ford the 1st occurrence. . While driving luckily other vehicles was not near !!! other 2012 models have had the problem fixed by Ford but for some reason this specific VIN isn't covered this is a very unsafe situation because as I have read with the other Fusion they recalled some where involved in accidents due to loss of electric assist steering.

Upon starting the car, the car was without power steering and the following message appeared on the dash steering assist fault, service required. the car was in a stationary position when this occurred. This is a safety concern, as if this would have occurred while driving, an accident could have happened and the operator, passenger and/or other persons on the road could have been seriously injured, or worse. The car was repaired at a auto repair shop and the result of this issue was that the steering gear, rack and pinion, needed to be replaced, as it was faulty, and the car needed to be reprogrammed. Failure Date: 02/13/2020

My car was in motion while driving in NY city traffic; the power steering went out and we received the advanctrac / service power steering now message. It was diagnosed that the rack and pinion needed replaced. My mechanic told me it was going to cost 400 dollars alone for the part. 21 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2011 Ford Fusion

Failure Date: 01/30/2020

While driving approx 25 to 35mph my service power steering and service advancetrac light came on at the same time, after turning the ignition off then back on then the car no longer had power steering and showed service power steering now and service advancetrac dealership replaced rack and pinion control arms, and checked all electrical connections and cannot find the problem.

22 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2010 Ford Fusion

Failure Date: 01/22/2020

Car was parked. Turn the car on and no power steering. Sudden failure. Told to I have to get a new rack and pinion which is over $2000. The power steering came back on after the battery was unplugged over night. Same parts as the recalled 2011 Ford Fusion. Now I am scared to drive this car and the repairs are almost more than the car is worth. 88k miles on it.

23 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2010 Ford Fusion

Failure Date: 01/21/2020

In December of 2018 while car was in motion; the power steering went out and we received the advanctrac / service power steering now message. It was diagnosed that the rack and pinion needed replaced so we replaced the rack and pinion. In oct; the power steering went out again while driving and after diagnosis; we had the rack and pinion changed again. In Nov. ; the power steering went out again while driving. This time the mechanic accidentally left his scanner on the car over the weekend and it drained the battery. When the mechanic charged the system and started the car; the message "service power steering now" was gone and the power steering was back. In Dec. The power steering went out again while driving. We once again had the rack and pinion changed. Now it is January 24th and the power steering is gone again. Each time; the driver of this vehicle has been lucky because it has happened at low speeds. If this happened while going around a curve greater than 45 degrees; this driver would not have been able to control the car. Now all we want to do is get rid of the car; unfortunately, we cannot keep the power steering from going out and I will not pass this issue on to someone else.

26 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2013 Ford Fusion

Failure Date: 11/26/2019

"steering assist fault service required" I have a 2013 Ford Fusion and this light came on. I have lost any and all power to my steering. I can still drive it, but it is very hard to turn the wheel in any direction unless I give it gas. I called Ford to see if this was under warranty, but they told me that they needed to look at it before they can tell if there were any recalls. They also charged me $150 and then proceeded to tell me that it needed $4396. Half of that amount was to replace the rack & pinion. They never even told me if there were other recalls. After doing extensive research on the internet, I have seen many complaints about the "steering assist fault". I am 20 years old and I am in the navy stationed in norfolk, va. I bought the car in michigan so it has seen winters and salt from the roads. Is the Ford dealership that I took my car to trying to get out of taking care of the recall? I called my mother in laws mechanic and he told me that he could get all the parts for me himself for less then $800. But I have a $4300 bill?? I am on military pay, I don't have that kind of money!.

32 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2013 Ford Fusion

Failure Date: 09/12/2019

I am writing today to share with you an issue we are having with our 2013 Ford Fusion. We were driving down the road during the rain. When the power steering abruptly failed. Luckily, we did not have an accident. This is the second time this has happened to me. The first time was 7 months ago and we had to replace the rack and pinion both times. There obiviously is a problem with them and I feel something should be done before somone is seriously hurt because of this issue. After doing some research I found that there was a recall on 2012 Fusions for the steering rack, but our vehicle was not included in the recall even though it was built at the same plant, during the same time period, as the recall originated from in hermosillo mexico. I sure hope something can be done to stop everyone from having this problem.

33 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2010 Ford Fusion

Failure Date: 09/10/2019

I was driving down the highway on the interstate at a speed limit of 60mph in motion on my way home and it started getting hard to turn my steering wheel which made it hard for me to make a left or right turn when I was exiting the exit. The service power steering popped up on my dashboard and advance trac. So then it ended up changing to say service power steering now which it made it very hard and difficult to even be able to drive my car period. I got a estimated of $1811. 94 for my car to be repaired at wynne Ford at 1020 w. Mercury blvd hampton va 23666 and for me to get a estimate of that price I can't afford to pay that it's like buying a used car at that price. I just find it hard to believe that it's a recall on a 2011-2012 Ford Fusion but not a 2010 when the same exact defect is going on with that same carjis a different year. Which basically I would be paying to get a electrical power steering rack and pinion in order for my car to be able to drive and function correctly.

34 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2013 Ford Fusion

Failure Date: 09/02/2019

While driving at 70mph on a crowded highway, the electronic power steering went out on my 2013 Ford Fusion with the error message of "steering loss stop safely", there was no early warning. The message was freighting as I was then afraid to turn the wheel as it said steering loss, not "power steering loss". I pulled over and figured it was power steering and nursed it to a safe place. If I had been turning into a crowded intersection I would have wrecked. According to the diagnosis I need to replace the entire electronic rack and pinion assembly. This was a similar issue with NHTSA campaign number: 15v340000 for the 2012 Ford Fusion. I contacted Ford and they said its not the same issue.

35 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2012 Ford Fusion

Failure Date: 08/18/2019

I was driving at highway speeds and the service advancetrac message appeared and the traction control light came on. I quickly noticed I had no power steering. I pulled over and did some quick research and come to find out that there had been other recalls for this problem with other vehicles but mine was not included in this recall but it was for the same problem and the same parts (rack and pinion).
