Ford Fusion owners have reported 46 problems related to transmission slip out of gear (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Ford Fusion based on all problems reported for the Fusion.
Events leading: normal driving operation. Failure:transmission slips after reaching 35 mph+, occurs anytime I am on the highway going uphill or trying to pass. Have seen many forums with others that are having similar issues. Causes my car to slip out of gear until I let off the accelerator or causes a very hard shift causing the transmission to bang really loud. What has been done to fix: nothing currently, have only done research into the issue and found many forums with individuals that have similar issues and have had their vehicles in to the dealer only to have their car worked on and still have problems.

Automatic transmission slips out of gear when going up a hill or when passing another vehicle. The car make a rough noise and you have to brake in order to get the car to change gears. When the cruise control was set at 65 mph the car approached a small hill and the gear would not change and made a awful noise. I took the car to a Ford dealership for diagnostic check and it revealed that I need a transmission. The cost was quoted at 4900. 00. This started approx 2 months ago and is still happening.
When driving the automatic transmission sometimes slips out of gear and goes to neutral. This problem happens from 10-40mph at 0-50% throttle. Loss of power happens between 5-10 seconds and the engine rpms will increase to 7,000 rpms. Depressing the throttle allows the transmission to engage again with an abrupt and hard shift. Accelerating again after this is very slow and sluggish and is believed that the car is in an upper gear. Almost caused a wreck that could have ended my life between two tractor trailers because of loss of power and failure to accelerate.

Hard shift/clunking noise, left wheel hop then no gear (neutral) usual shifting from 2 - 3. No passing in this vehicle, will jump out of gear when shifting from 2 - 3.
I purchased a 2010 Ford Fusion in August of 2009. The car always shifted out of park and into gear very hard, especially after sitting for several hours. I thought nothing of it. Then the transmission began to "flare" between gear shifts. Essentially the car would shift out of gear (into neutral) and then hard shift into the next gear. A Ford engineer gave me the term they use "flaring". Ford reflashed the transmission without resolving the problem and then reflashed it again without resolving the problem. This is a safety issue.
Transmission slips out of gear.
I have had my 2006 Fusion for two years. My transmission started slipping around 60,000 miles. At first it only slipped when I tried to accelerate quickly, but over the last few months it has gotten worse. I am afraid to drive it on the highway because when it slips it jumps out of gear and I can't accelerate at all. I just pray that the person behind me can slow down in time not to hit me and my children. It takes a few miles for it to jump back into gear. I have had to pull over on the side of the road to wait for it to get back into gear. I cannot afford a new transmission! this car replaced my Ford econoline which I drove for over 200,000 miles before its transmission went out. If I wanted to buy a transmission I would have bought one for the vehicle I was replacing. This is the only car I have to get my kids and myself to work and to school. I cannot afford expensive repairs on a relatively new car; and I shouldn't have to. These cars are dangerous.
Our 2006 Fusion sel's transmission has been slipping out of gear since around 44k miles. While in forward motion, regardless of the current speed or rpms the transmission slips out of gear and the following may happen, sometimes all in the same occurrence: (1) a sudden transmission surge then a jerk resulting in high revving rpms with no forward power. The gas pedal only revs the engine with no forward acceleration (2) a sudden grab/slam out of and back into gear jolting anyone in the car significantly (3) gear slippage resulting in high revving rpm into the red zone, no forward acceleration, and no return to previous or any other gear (4) bucking surges of acceleration and deceleration making the car impossible to control and drive safely. While advancing from a complete stop such as a stop sign or traffic signal (1) transmission may not come out of high gear and car will move only slowly until stopped and restarted (2) transmission stays in high gear and the car moves slowly only to uncontrollably jolt forward while slamming into a lower gear. All of the above may or may not be solved by stopping and restarting the car. The above issues happen regardless of the type of roadway, speed traveling, and whether the car is traveling in a straight path or turning. We were told by a Ford dealership that it was a known issue that presents itself around 40k miles and usually after the warranty had expired. Estimates to repair ranged from $2,500 to $4,500. In addition to the repair costs, there is the much higher potential costs of lost lives due to the lack of control this issue puts the driver in. When a driver immediately has no control of forward momentum and suddenly has no way to direct the vehicle to a safe location at current traffic speeds, there is a sudden potential for loss of lives for the occupants of the car and potentially the vehicles following behind.
Several problems with 2006 Ford Fusion se ignition on/off, key removal and gear selection. When starting car, comes out of gear. On startup, gear shift will not engage/disengage fully. On startup, cannot start motor because gear shift will not fully engage "park". Key cannot be removed from ignition when turning car off. When at stoplights, transmission will slip out of gear.
Automatic transmission slips out of gear during acceleration. When downshifting it slips and sometimes slams itself into gear. Starting from a stop sometimes the transmission doesn't seem to know which gear to start in and slams into 1st. The most frequent problem is that of the transmission dropping out of gear upon acceleration or trying to top a grade. If you are not careful the rpms will reach 5000+ rpms. This issue began around 50k miles. Ford dealership in sterling heights michigan checked the transmission in approx may of 2008 and they only offered a complete transmission replacement at a cost of 4k+, they could not determine what the problem was.
My 2006 Ford Fusion 3. 0l v-6 is experiencing severe problems with the transmission. This all started at 55,000mi. It will slip out of gear at acceleration and clunks and thuds when it is downshifting. This is an extreme safety hazard, especially if you decide to turn quickly if front of on coming traffic. The trans just may not catch. Ford engineers know what the problem is. It is the transmission which Ford purchased from "aisen" in germany. They have a defective control body which has extreme spool bore wear. Someone better require Ford to fix this issue before someone gets hurt. . . . I have many close calls since I owned this car. The dealer wants to charge me 5000. 00 to fix their issue. Why is Ford so hush hush?.
