1 Noises During Shifting problem of the 2017 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 03/12/2021

Manual transmission thumping/clunking sound when engaging into a 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th. Happens more often when coming up o a stop and I re-engage into a gear. Feels as if something falls into place after the thump/clunk noise. Has 58,000 miles. It's intermediate, and it happens mostly on city limits. Although I have heard it when downshifting at highway limits. I am close to hitting 60,000 miles which my warranty will up very soon. I am afraid 10,000 miles from here I will be stuck with a tranny bill to pay out pocket. Ford should at least acknowledge the issue, and provide information to its dealers so they can perform surgery on the vehicle, and weed out this issue. Doesn't feel right when you spend over 30k on a car, then a quarter into their lifespan there is major power train issues.

4 Noises During Shifting problem of the 2016 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 04/30/2016

Since I have purchased the car with 300 miles I had to take the vehicle in because the transmission was at times, hard to shift, would grind a gear. Locked me out of a gear, and in general can shake and produce loud thumping noises when engaging gears while sitting at a standstill or even while driving down the road. I was told at the time that this was normal behavior. I had test drove more than one car before purchasing this one. None of the others behaved this way. I have done more research and discovered that this is a very intermittent issue between builds of the transmission. I took it in again for service. They had removed the transmission and serviced some parts. Upon getting the car back it almost immediately went back to doing the same thing. This is not a big safety concern, but could cause bigger and more expensive issues down the road depending on what is happening to the transmission. This is one of four complaints I have with this particular vehicle that have not been resolved.

5 Noises During Shifting problem of the 2015 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 01/05/2015

I am also experiencing the thud issue in my 2015 Ford Mustang gt car. It's really noticeable when I shift from and to 1, 2, 3, 4 and it's quieter but still there shifting 5 and 6. Noise is very annoying, but my concern is will I have issues with my drive train, clutch or any thing else in the future.

10 Noises During Shifting problem of the 2011 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 07/04/2012

When shifting from 1st to 2nd gear transmission will not shift, it must be force into 2nd gear. Also 5th gear grinds at normal highway speeds. Vehicle will not shift into reverse unless engine is off, must shift to reverse, start engine and then vehicle will move in reverse. While driving there is no vibration, nor whinning noises. Once vehicle has been shut down and engine is cold, can not shift into 1st gear, after vehicle has set over night, can only place into 1st gear before startup.

11 Noises During Shifting problem of the 2012 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 12/04/2011

I was driving @ 60mph down shifted from 5 to 4 and lost all power from the trasmission and the clutch became hard to push. The engine did not shut off. I did not hear a noise of any sort. I had to call and get it towed. I have not gotten a diagnosis yet.

12 Noises During Shifting problem of the 2011 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 11/26/2011

The clutch makes a cracking noise. When I shift between 1st and 3rd it can be difficult at times depending on the temperature. The symptoms are not consistent.

13 Noises During Shifting problem of the 2011 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 11/19/2011

€¢ transmission notchiness • occasionally unable to get into gears (not due to skip shift) • clutch makes occasional clunking noises especially at low speeds • cold shifting exacerbates problems (will be taken care of by TSB) dangerous experiences: • November 18th: I was accelerating onto the highway to merge with traffic. Attempted to shift from third gear to fourth gear as I was passing a semi. I was unable to get into gear (shifting correctly: clutch depressed, calm smooth gear change), and I was forced to drive off the road at 35+ mph. This life threatening experience moved me to take these actions. €¢ December 5th: as I was taking the vehicle to a dealership for the third repair attempt, I was turning left at an intersection and had to shift from first to second (at 2000 rpm so no skip shift issue). I was unable to enter the gear and was vulnerable to accidents being stuck in the middle of the intersection for several seconds. I finally shifted into the second gear with a loud grind, avoiding a collision with a bus.

14 Noises During Shifting problem of the 2012 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 09/27/2011

Problem: abnormal vibration/noise in stick shift/driver seat during deceleration. Car: 2012 Mustang v6 base model (no add on's) manual 6 speed. Purchased new. Had control arms replace within 2 weeks of ownership due to creaking front end (392 miles on the car). Approximately 3 months after control arms were replaced I noticed vibrations in shifter and driver seat as well as rumbling noises when on highway during deceleration. Sounded and felt like when you ride over a rough patch of pavement or a metal grated bridge. Problem continued off and on and I could not duplicate. I have recently been able to reproduce the problem. What I discovered was when I ran the car up to 2750-3000 rpms then let off the accelerator I could feel an abnormal vibration and hear the car rumbling. The vibration/noise would stop as the car decelerated to about 2500-2000 rpm's. Severity of vibration/rumbling noise has ranged from mild vibration/noise to stick slapping back and forth violently and very loud rumbling. Car does this in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th gear. I don't get to 3000 in 5th or 6th gear so I don't know if problem exists in these gears. Road conditions do not appear to lessen or increase rate of incident.

15 Noises During Shifting problem of the 2012 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 09/20/2011

As I was turning a corner from a red light I went to shift into 4th gear it would not shift at all almost causing me to crash. This transmission locks rarely locks me out of gears but this time was the worst. I also have many grinding noises from 1st-2nd-3rd gear. One time I went put it in reverse and it popped out. Another time I was at a stop light and put it in first went to go and it grinded the gears really loud then it popped out lucky it was at night an no one was behind me. Multiple missed 3rd gear shifts as if it is locking me out. This problem keeps getting worse and worse the more I drive it and I only have 1100 miles on the car. This is not fair and this transmission needs to be recalled complete garbage. Please do something about this. Thank you!!!.

16 Noises During Shifting problem of the 2012 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 09/01/2011

My manual trans Mustang have shifting problems just like other 2011 and 2012 owners. Sometimes it has huge noise going into 2nd gear and sometimes it simply refuses my shifting. Please have it recalled after investigation, I am so frustrated. Thanks!.

17 Noises During Shifting problem of the 2012 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 08/07/2011

I own a 2012 Mustang, purchased 06/13/11 . I have had the car for about two months and have experienced many problems with the car. The check engine light care on the second week I bought the car, it stayed on for a day then went away , I figured it way bad gas, but I may have been wrong. The transmission has been very notchy when shifting from first to second gear ever since I purchased the car. Normally this notchyness goes away when the car is warmed up , I try to baby it as much as possible in fear of damaging the transmission. On two occasions, when shifting from first to second I have had the transmission pop out of second gear, this was under slow acceleration. Luckily this has only happened in my work parking lot and not when merging onto traffic or pulling out of my driveway , etc. . Where it could be a major safety concern. I have a concern with the clutch is very noisy and rough when engaging/disengaging , it feels as if something is loose or not working properly. This noise worries me, as I don't recall hearing/feeling it on the cars I test drove before this purchase. This next issue is an odd problem but a problem non the less, I have had my emergency flashers turn by themselves when I adjust my ac/heat settings, this has happened a few times since purchase and is annoying. The most recent problem happened last Sunday when I was on the highway in 5th gear, I went to accelerate but the car didn't go anywhere, the rpms increased however the car did not move faster. . It seemed to not have power after 3k rmps . I shifted into 4th and tried to accelerate, same thing, no power. I shifted back into 5th and continued to drive home worried about my cars health and my safety. . . . . Few minutes later the check engine light came on. Thankfully, I made it home with no problems . But the car is still not running right. I am bringing the car into Ford this Wednesday and I will let them know about the problems I have been having. More information to follow.

18 Noises During Shifting problem of the 2011 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 08/06/2011

Car: 2011 Mustang v6 with manual transmission miles: 3600 the problem: the gear shift is very notchy and rough, especially from 1-2 and 2-3. There have been times when I wanted to make a left turn at a light and mistakenly gone into third gear from neutral because the gear refuses to go into 1 easily. So I end up not having enough acceleration to beat oncoming traffic. I have almost had three crashes this way. Other times shifting from 1-2 or 2-3 causes an incomplete shift because of some resistance in the gear box. This leads to a jarring, loud grinding noise emanating from the gear box. This also leads to loss of acceleration and I have been almost rear ended a few times. These problems occur on and off mostly when starting off from a stop (from neutral) and at high rpm gear changes. Resolution: I've taken the car into the dealership and they changed the transmission fluid as per the Ford TSB. This fixed the problem for a mile and the problem started occurring again. I took the car in again on the insistence of the service manager and he drove it around and acknowledged the issue as well. He said he would get in touch with Ford to see if there was any fix. He got back to me a few weeks later and said that Ford doesn't have any resolution and doesn't seem to even acknowledge the issue. Final thoughts: I think the trasmission problems is an accident waiting to happen. I am extremely disappointed that a new car has these issues. It is a great car otherwise. Ford needs to acknowledge the issue and fix it soon. I've also found that some 2012 Mustangs have the same issue with the gear box. It is appalling to think that the company would continue to use the same transmission parts in spite of the issues in the 2011 models. This is amounts to a blazen disregard to consumer safety and experience. I strongly suggest the NHTSA pressures the car company to fix this issue and if no such resolution is forthcoming to force them to issue a recall. Sincerely an unhappy Ford driver.

19 Noises During Shifting problem of the 2011 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 07/30/2011

Since the car has been in my possession, 3rd gear has always had issues. It grinds from time to time, and the transmission pushes me out of 3rd gear when my foot is completely down on the clutch. It has also developed an increasingly loud whining noise throughout all the gears while accelerating. The shifts when cold are rough, doesn't feel as it should.

20 Noises During Shifting problem of the 2011 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 07/27/2011

Loud whine from under hood area, possibly mt82 manual transmission, heard from 2. 5k-3. 5k rpms and in gears one to four when up shifting. Whine only heard when car is in motion. Whine is not heard when in reverse gear. Clunking noise can sometimes be heard with 1st to 2nd up shift and is somewhat difficult to shift at times. Engagement of gears can be audibly heard and 'felt' in the drivers seat during the rough 1st to 2nd shifts. Have had this trouble since new with 112 miles on the car starting out. Now car has approximately 275 miles. Whine noise has become noticeably louder over a short period and more frequent already. 1st to 2nd hard shifts becoming more frequent even over short period of time. Regardless whether car is warmed up or not, whine and hard shift frequency seems unaffected. I have not ran the engine speed over 4k rpms since purchased. Have reported to the service department at cavalier Ford of chesapeke, va, left cell and work number including work times and have had no feedback as promised from any tech as of the time of this writing. I have read and heard of many 2011 Mustang owners with the manual transmission having these same symptoms; sometimes with dangerous results on the road.

21 Noises During Shifting problem of the 2011 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 07/01/2011

Problems shifting car into gear. Gears are notchy and almost impossible to shift into first when car is cold. Transmission making whining noises in 1-4 gears.

22 Noises During Shifting problem of the 2012 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 05/31/2011

I bought a 2012 Mustang gt premium in April. Starting at about 2000 miles, my car has had a large "thunk" when shifting from 1st to 2nd gear, occasionally causing a "lock-out. " usually, this lockout occurs at low speeds (I. E. Under 15 mph) or occasionally will occur when stopped this issue has been reported to the local dealership a total of 3+ times, with the first action being a replacement of the fluid per the TSB. While this improved the issue, it did not resolve it. The second time it was dropped off, one of the service consultants recognized the issue. I removed the car from the dealership since I was going on a long vacation with the car. After dropping it off the third time, the issue was recognized again (after much delay). The dealership tested another car of similar miles, which was "notchy" but not to the extent of my own vehicle. Regardless, it was not found to be "excessive. " I escalated my claim through a Ford service rep who subsequently called and explained that it was not "excessive" enough and that the dealer could not replicate the problem to the extent I experience. I proceeded to request a test drive with the other vehicle and noticed the similar feel, but none of the noise or "lock-out. " I agreed to drive another collection of miles, but the lock-out is still present at regular intervals, leading me to believe this is a systematic safety issue.

23 Noises During Shifting problem of the 2012 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 05/28/2011

Brand new 2012 Ford Mustang boss 302, 5. 0l, mt82 6-spd transmission. My understanding is this car has a revised clutch mechanism vs. The 2011 model year. Regardless, I've begun to experience the same issues 2011 model year owners report. I've owned the car less than two weeks and with less than 200 miles on the car at a stop light the transmission failed to engage into first gear fully. This results in a grinding coming from the transmission. Nearly rear ended, vehicle was at a light at the end of a freeway ramp and was unable to accelerate until the car was placed into neutral and re-shifted to 1st. 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd shifts tend to be hard, rough or clunky. On occasion shifts to 5th exhibit a clunky sensation as well. At 295 miles was unable to shift into 2nd gear, you could hear the synchros winding up in the transmission during the attempt. Likewise moving back to first, even at speeds of less than 5mph in this instance, resulted in a rough engagement and synchro whine from the tranny. Driving in 2nd gear at 20mph and pushing the clutch in to coast results in a rattling noise intermittently. This rattling just started within the last 50 miles of driving. The build date on the vehicle was 3/31/2011. I've not yet reported this issue to my Ford dealer but intend to shortly! very very worried at over $42,000 this is the most expensive vehicle I've ever purchased and am gravely concerned I may have a lemon on my hands. My previous Mustang with a 5 spd manual never exhibited these tendencies. Ford must resolve the issues the mt-82 6 speed transmission immediately or replace it with a properly designed alternate unit. I won't entertain having my special edition vehicle damaged due to a faulty transmission. Likewise I understand the fix offered to 2011 owners only makes matters worse, I refuse to try anything that will worsen the current situation. Deeply fearful that continued use of my 2012 vehicle will result in considerable drivetrain damage or accident.

24 Noises During Shifting problem of the 2012 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 04/29/2011

The contact owns a 2012 Ford Mustang. The contact stated that she was unable to shift between third and fourth gears and would hear a loud grinding noise from the vehicle. In addition, there was smoke coming from the vehicle abnormally. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and the transmission was replaced yet the failure recurred shortly thereafter. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The current and failure mileages were unknown. The VIN was unavailable.

25 Noises During Shifting problem of the 2011 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 04/01/2011

Rough, irregular shifting, most noticeable shifting from 1st gear on this manual transmission. Seems to lock you out of gears at any given time. Also while down shifting, I. E. Exiting off the highway onto an exit ramp, have experienced a similar problem. From 6th gear, the transmission locked me out of 4th gear and forced me into 2nd gear. This caused a massive and sudden decrease in speed causing the vehicle behind me to slam on their brakes in order to avoid rear-ending me. Persistent grinding noise and feel while the car is being shifted, as if the gears are not meshing when shifted. Noticeable in the feel of the stick and audible at times as well. This is noticeable in most gears in particular 2nd thru 5th. The transmission constantly makes a hard clunking noise when it is put into first gear from neutral. This clunk can be heard and felt in the car clearly. I've had this vehicle to the dealer several times, keep getting the run-around, I. E. , "that is normal", "our tech's couldnt reproduce the problem" etc. . . Standard dealer deflection.

26 Noises During Shifting problem of the 2011 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 12/14/2010

The contact owns a 2011 Ford Mustang. The contact was driving approximately 10 mph when a grinding noise was heard from the vehicle. In addition, there was a delayed response from the manual transmission when shifting into second or third gear. The failure recurred when driving between 10-30 mph. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the old transmission fluid was removed and replaced with a higher grade. The failure continued to recur. There was a technical service bulletin under NHTSA action number: 1003914 (power train: manual transmission) that was possibly related to the failure. The manufacturer was not notified of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 10.

27 Noises During Shifting problem of the 2011 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 10/20/2010

The contact owns a 2011 Ford Mustang gt. The contact stated that when attempting to shift gears manually from first to second, the vehicle would skip second and shift into third gear, distorting the vehicles speed. Also, when shifting from first to second gear, the vehicle would exhibit a clunking and grinding noise. The dealer was notified of the defect, but the vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 2,000 and the current mileage was 7,500.

28 Noises During Shifting problem of the 2011 Ford Mustang

The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who stated the transmission operated properly. The manufacturer was notified of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 75.

29 Noises During Shifting problem of the 2011 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 07/12/2010

Since the first day that I bought this new Mustang, the automatic transmission shifts hard and there is a clunking noise. This happens mostly when slowing down and then starting to pick up. Also when just slowing down and the car shifts to 1st gear. The shifting is erratic and noisy. When the engine is cold, it also bangs into 2nd and 3rd gear. The dealership checked it out and said that this is part of the computer programming and is the way the transmission was designed, until it gets used to my driving habits. That was 17, 000 miles ago. They said there might be a computer upgrade in the future. In the meantime I fear a rear end collision when I am unable to pick up speed because of the hesitation and clunking.

30 Noises During Shifting problem of the 2010 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 06/15/2010

I purchased a 2010 Ford Mustang v6 coupe and have had several transmission issues. The hydrolic clutch has been replaced, the slave cylander, throttle body unit, and thermostat have been replaced. My car has difficulty shifting from 1st to 2nd gear, and reverse. I have to coast the car and re-engage the clutch while shifting back and forth to get it into reserve. My transmission sounds like its grinding and the shifter makes a knocking noise. When shifting the car likes to jump foward. My shifter shakes and wants to pop out of 5th gear while on the free-way. I have been telling the Ford dealership this as well as Ford motor company customer service in dearborne mi. When involved the dealership says it's normal for my car and that all I can do is wait for a 'catastrophic' event to occur or I can trade in my car. I should not have to wait for something castastrophic to occur for Ford to take me seriously. In addition to my current problems my tie rods, both inner and outer are bad and need replaced, I have a high pressure stearing hose leak, the housing is now leaking an needs replaced, my car is leaking coolant and my clutch is going bad again.

32 Noises During Shifting problem of the 2005 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 01/22/2005

Problen 1: when slowing to a stop, maybe 5 mph or so, then pressing on the gas pedal to accelerate, the engine rpm's increase as if the transmission is in neutral, then jumps into gear causing a sudden jerk forward. The problem has been reported and confirmed by Ford dealership. Problem 2: started vehicle, with foot on brake put in reverse and heard a strange noise and blue smoke outside passenger window. The right rear tire was "burning rubber" pulled shift leaver back to nuetral and engine rpm normal. Possibly related to the problem above or I could ahave had my foor on brake and gas pedal at the same time but can not that easily.

33 Noises During Shifting problem of the 2000 Ford Mustang

Failure Date: 11/19/2003

As I was driving and reached 30 mph it sounded like the transmission would not shifting to the next gear. It made a screeching noise and would not pass 30 mph mean while the rpm was to 8. Then it jumped and passed 30 mph. This happened every time it reached 30 mph. The automatic transmission was slow to shift. This 2000 Mustang only has 40,000 miles!!- and I was told by Ford that the transmission was damaged--on top of that the warranty does not cover the $1,600 cost. I've heard a lot of the same complaint about Ford Mustang 's transmission. For a 3 year old Mustang we should not have to pay for a defected transmission !!!!even thought the warranty has expired -- Ford should help cover the cost.
