Ford Mustang owners have reported 47 problems related to clutch pedal/linkage (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Ford Mustang based on all problems reported for the Mustang.
The clutch pedal of my Mustang failed at just over 90,000 miles. I was driving in my neighborhood when the pedal was no longer able to be operated safely and required twisting my leg in order to push the pedal down. After limping the vehicle home, I inspected the pedal and found that weld that joined one side of the pedal arm to the pivot bar had broken off completely, and the other side had cracked. This allowed significant lateral movement of the pedal, which caused it to hang up in the assembly when pushing it in. There was no abuse loading of the pedal through the life of the car. As a mechanical engineer, I can say with confidence that the weld that broke off was bad/cold, and that once it broke, shifted all the pedal loads to the other side, resulting in its failure. This design is not robust to typical manufacturing quality variations due to the welds being only 90 deg around the circumference. My failure is only one of dozens that have been reported in model specific forums and on social media. I have encouraged others with this issue to report theirs.

Car shakes when coasting between. 2k rpms and 3k rpms car starts to hesitate and only way to stop the shaking is step opn clutch and shift to another gear or step on the gas pedal and after a couple of seconds it will begin to accelerate and shake more aggressively before returning to normal operation without shaking which would be very dangerous if I were to try to match speed while entering a free way or avoiding a potential accident.

Clutch failed in 3rd gear while traveling down a four lane street. Car stalled in traffic and would not restart. Almost caused an accident with driver following vehicle due to sudden stall. Car would not restart due to being stuck in gear. Recently received service at two Ford dealerships. Notified dealers of strong burning smell coming from car and noise being made by transmission in 2nd and 3rd gear. Was informed that the problem was remedied. Two days later, car stalled in traffic and clutch pedal fell to the floor and stuck there.

Intermittently, the clutch pedal will be stuck to the floor after pressing it to switch gears. It happened to me when I was going from neutral to 1st gear and from 1st gear to second gear which is a huge safety concern as the car stalled and I almost hit someone and someone almost hit me. It has only happened to me 2 times in the last month because I found the source of the problem. The clutch return line is at fault because it seems to be very short. Because of it being short, it has a lot of tension on it. Because of the car having a flat plane crank, I believe the excessive vibrations that the engine creates might make this line back off over time. My car only had 5,000 miles when this happened and it was very frightening. The line is an interference fit on the fluid reservoir and its cause the line to slowly leak every time you touch the line because the seal isn't good enough. To temperately remedy this issue, I have just been pushing the line back on. This isn't a good fix and Ford needs to recall these cars because it can cause a bad accident especially at speed. The picture attached is a picture of the line that is in question. In the picture, the line was fitted correctly on the fluid reservoir. This is just to show the faulty line in question. I hope Ford can recall these cars ASAP because I'm scared to drive it really.

Same as everyone I know high rev lockout, can't shift past 7krpms clutch pedal sticks to the floor. Gears are rough to get into normal. Will hear loud clunking when changing gears sometimes. Car has 35k miles I bought it with 17k miles and the issue has always been there. This needs to be addressed this could cause transmission failure and accidents if it fails on highways.
2015 Ford Mustang gt premium with performance pack and all options. The car has 28000 miles and I purchased it April 15, 2015. At that time it had a little over 26000 miles. The following is what's happening. May 4, 2017 I heard a popping noise coming from the clutch pedal while driving to work. It did it during the day so I pulled the vehicle into my shop to look at the clutch pedal to see where the noise was coming from. The link from the clutch master cylinder to the pedal was lose and making a popping noise. I re secured the link by pressing the rod back onto the pedal. Saturday may 6, 2017 at 11:12 am the noise came back and while driving I pushed the pedal fast four times and the link came lose while driving. I coasted to a stop and look at the pedal again and saw that the master cylinder push rod came completely off. I reconnected it and before I continue driving the car contacted courtesy Ford in conyers, GA and set up an appointment Monday may 8, 2017 at 7 am. Also doing this time the vehicle cut off several times. It happens when I'm sitting at a light and the vehicle is idling, coasting in neutral, coming to a stop, turning. The vehicle has cut off at least 11 times and I have documented it. Also I recorded two videos with my phone. After the vehicle continued to stall, I decided to park the vehicle for the week end and plan to take it to the Ford dealer for these and other problems.
The clutch pedal assembly broke at one of the welds while driving straight on a city street. The pedal lost total function and fell to the floor and I couldn't shift gears. While still in motion, I attempted to pull the pedal up using the top of my foot. The pedal then reverted all the way up under the dash and could not be reached at all. I was able to pull over and park the car into the nearest lot.

The contact owns a 2005 Ford Mustang. While driving approximately 25 mph and attempting to switch gears, the clutch pedal was depressed and a crunch sound was heard. The clutch pedal traveled all the way to the floorboard. The contact had to maneuver the vehicle to the side of the road. The vehicle was switched to the neutral position and came to a complete stop. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. The vehicle was inspected and a piece of plastic was found fractured into two parts on the floor of the vehicle under the clutch pedal. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer or independent mechanic for diagnostic testing. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 190,000.

Ford Mustang manual transmission, clutch / break pedal assembly - failure to function fmea failure mode: welded pin connecting clutch to clutch pedal broke making in impossible to disengage engine using clutch from transmission. Near crash avoided by evasive maneuver and pulling gear shift to neutral while applying maximum breaking. Occurance: estimate 4 - it appears this is a systemic problem as transmission repair facility advised replacement clutch / break pedal assembly are back ordered / difficult to obtain. Detectablity: 10 - not detectable until clutch pedal breaks, functional to non functional severity: 10 - failure of clutch / break pedal assembly can result in crash with possible death rpn risk factor 400 - death or serious injury may occur as result of clutch / break pedal assembly failure to function. Corrective action requested alert to be issued advising drivers of potential hazard investigation to confirm this clutch failure mode is a systemic problem with Ford Mustangs having manual transmission recall if investigation verifies systemic problem.
The clutch pedal assembly pin broke off and had to be tig welded by a mechanic. He indicated that the original weld was faulty. We were lucky that we were able to push the vehicle off the road safely in the midst of a very busy street.
Was accelerating to merge with traffic on freeway when my car would not shift and the clutch pedal depressed to the floor. I was in the middle of merging and lost the ability to shift or control why vehicle. It created a very unsafe situation and Ford issued a recall for this very same issues for earlier Mustang.

Vehicle was purchased 11/29/2013/ with 21851 miles on it . I questioned the functioning of my manual transmission within 2 days of delivery with problems such as notchiness in gear shifter / reverse, 1st, 2nd and grinding into 3rd gears. Vehicle sent to Ford. I received the vehicle back on 12/02/13, 25978 miles; was told the vehicle was repaired under Ford TSB- transmission fluid was replaced. The vehicle did present with some improvement. January 11 2013, returned the vehicle back to Ford/ problems again with manual transmission. I experienced gears grinding from park position in attempt to shift gears from reverse to 1st to 2nd, major grind from 3rd to 4th gears. Furthermore; due to awkwardness of the displacement of the clutch pedal ( I am 5'3 ) the vehicle will only function when the clutch pedal is displaced completely down to the floor board which makes my safety vulnerable considering I have to electronically ( electric seats) place my seat forward resulting in body positioned too close to proximity of the steering wheel with my knees located approximately 1 to 2 inches from the dash board. Upon exiting the vehicle, the seat must be positioned backwards in order to exit . Transmission issues was addressed by Ford/ extensive transmission work was performed on the vehicle. Again the vehicle was in Ford's shop from 1/11/14 to 3/10/2014. . . Almost 8 weeks!!. June 28, 2014 approximately 32300 miles on it, my vehicle is once again back to Ford due to notchiness of reverse, first, second and third gears/ close seating issues addressed.
Around 17000 miles the vehicle clutch pedal took a few seconds to disengage when shifting from 2nd to 3rd on higher rpms. Also, when shifting into 2nd and 3rd at 3-4k rpms, I would feel a notching feel on the shifter from the transmission like if it feeling a few teeth from the transmission's gears or syncros. I am still not sure, dealerships still haven't opened the transmission to find out. Car just hit 36000 miles, found out their was a recall or warranty coverage for the pedal issue, if car under 36000 miles. Was never informed from precious visits. Driver seat also stop working complete, doesn't move anyway.
Documentation on this vehicle was previously posted on 12/5/13. As noted; ongoing to transmission/ clutch problems post TSB repairs continue. My vehicle requires the clutch pedal to be engaged completely down to the floorboard during the initial key start process, thereafter; the clutch pedal must be engaged at a minimum to floorboard to the maximum of approximately 1 -2 inches off floorboard. Due to my height ( 5'3"), I am not comfortable seated so close to the steering wheel. I am concerned about possible bodily harm or injury due to airbag deployment beyond potentially common injuries due to air bag burns. I have taken the vehicle to my local Ford dealership to explore the option of clutch pedal adjustment, to no avail . I was told by the service advisor that the clutch is hydraulic, therefore clutch pedal height cannot be adjusted to accommodate. I personally have owned several manual transmission driven vehicles which include past ownership of a Ford Mustang gt convertible without these issues or problems.
I accelerated from a traffic light, from a full stop. At approximately 20 mph I depressed fully the clutch pedal in order to shift into 2nd gear. The clutch pedal remained in the fully depressed position and did not return to the raised position. The gear shift lever could not be moved into any gear, but could be moved freely within the neutral position. I raised the clutch pedal by placing the tip of my shoe under it and pulling upward, but no change was observed in the operation of the gear shift lever. I could start, and turn off the engine as usual, thus I had power brakes and power steering as I pushed the car and then coasted to a store's parking lot. I had the car towed home. There was no change in the operation of the gear shift lever or the clutch pedal after the car had been parked overnight. The clutch pedal remains fully depressed, unless one raises it. The condition described above has not affected the operation of the starter interlock, thus the engine will not start unless the clutch pedal is fully depressed.

(2nd owner) ever since I purchased this vehicle I have had nothing but problems with the shifter/ shifter linkage. The vehicle misses shifts and won't engage mainly during 2nd-3rd shifts. For a performance automobile this is the worst clutch and shifter combination I have ever seen. Shifter constantly will not engage and on a number of occasions has popped out of gear due to not being fully engaged. Linkage sounds clunky and is not smooth in any way.
Today is Nov. 16, I have my car at the dealer now because it won't shift into 3 gear at red line and the fifth gear syc is out, Ford says they can fix problem, there pulling the wool over your eyes, this is the second time I had my car at the dealer, they put another clutch pedal and spring in it to solve 2 to 3 shift. Took it out same problem, bought a expensive replacement shifter top brand still has problem,so it has to be the tranny. Don' let them bs you there is a manger problem when entering traffic or trying to pull out to pass this tranny won't respond and your in trouble with the other traffic. Now there fixing the syc and the 2 to 3 shift again, somebody has to investigate what is Ford hiding. Look on the web sites there are hundreds if not thousands of complaints of the same 6 speed, thanks for letting me blow of some steam, [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. I drive a 2012 v6 Mustang 2dr coupe base . I was merging into traffic onto i40/i85 when tried go to second gear when it would not go. I tried forcing it but was afraid I would snap the shifter shaft so I was forced to slow and then it finally went into 2nd gear. This was the other day 1/12/13. So this is not first time it has happened it has happened several times same thing when you get on the pedal this happens and on occasion it will go into 2nd but will grind. This has happened maybe 10-20 times both grinding and just not going into 2nd gear. So I know this is an ongoing problem with Ford and the Mustangs of 2011 and 2012 from other Mustang owners I have talked to either on forums or in person. When I attended Mustang week in myrtle beach SC in 2012 several people had this issue as well. So what can I do? the dealers that I have brought this up to in my area have told me it was the way I push in clutch ( classic response) I find hard to believe since I am 34yr and have had 9 vehicles in my life all manuals and I shift all the same through every gear. My hands are tied cause now my warranty is out. I have my 4yr son who rides with me alot and I am a daily driver of this vehicle and I am concerned of my sons and my safety. Please help.
Mild to violent vibration from manual transmission upon downshifting for deceleration on exit ramp in the range of 5500-2500 rpm. Mild to violent shaking felt through car. . . Steering wheel, shifter, pedals. . . Seats. . . Engine speed is matched to transmission speed prior to clutch engagement. I've been driving manual shift cars , Mustang gt, small british and american cars for over 35 years. When staying in third gear for example in traffic that speeds up and slows down, vibrations come on above 2500 rpm this is an intermittent problem. More noticeable now in the warm weather. I drive about 35 miles each way to and from work. When the car is thoroughly warmed, I experience it everyday now in the warm weather. Placed into Ford dealer in decatur, al. He kept the car 4 complete days and after waiting for news I went and got it back. As I was leaving the dealer, the service manager who never looked up from his paperwork, said "we couldn't find anything". When I put the car in for service it had 34000 miles on it. Now it has over 36,000. This is getting worse with age and mileage. I wonder if at 50000 miles if the car will be undriveable?.
I was driving my 2011 Ford Mustang gt at approximately 6pm on 1 March 2012. I shifted from 2nd to 3rd and when I did, the clutch pedal stayed on the floor. I could smell excessive clutch wear after the incident. I am thankful that I am an experienced driver and was able to stop the vehicle safely. Now the clutch stays engaged and you can not shift in to any gear while the car is running. Ford has refused to warranty the repairs. Mileage at the time 27,000.
The transmission was shifted into 4th gear and popped out of gear approximately 2 seconds after releasing the clutch pedal. (this happened once) the shift from 1st to second has not been 100% reliable, it has on several occasions not been going into 2nd gear unless I rapidly move the shift lever very slightly side to side to find the gear. This is not a 1st to 4th (fuel economy) shift issue. I read and experienced this enough times to know that the vehicle suggests? this at a low accelerator input. I am referring to knowing about this and accelerating enough in 1st gear as to not see the dash prompt for 1st to 4th! although you are assuming that this is not a safety issue, what else would you call a transmission that will not shift into a gear one hundred percent of the time! you may also assume driver error for one or maybe more occasions but not the same issue on the same car after having it happen several times and consciously trying to avoid it only to have it happen again. Although several occasions of not being able to shift into 2nd out of 100 seem low, when will it happen at the most inopportune time? I am sure that I am not the only driver with years of experience in manual transmission cars to start a report. My 2nd car currently has over 100,000 miles on it and has not had one single issue with the manual transmission or the clutch. Same transmission and same clutch. Never been worked on.
I was driving my 2011 Ford Mustang gt at approximately 8pm on 6 Jan 2012. My car is now parked and I will not be able to drive it for almost one month due to waiting parts coming from the states to where I am stationed in south korea. The Ford service center here has been very friendly and willing to help resolve the issue. They identified the issue as my clutch. Finally, something gave with my Mustang and hopefully can get the problem finally resolved and can enjoy my car.
When I first purchased my car I started to notice that shifting didn't seem right. One morning I walked out to my car to start it and the clutch was on the floor. I pumped the clutch several times to get any kind of pedal pressure back. This happened one more time and I did the same thing the get pressure back. On 6 Dec was the first time I brought it in to a Ford service dealer to have it looked at. But before I got to the dealer, I started to notice a lot of noise from the transmission. The noise sounded like a whine. Then noises also came from the rear brakes I started to hear a lot of noise from them, like they were still touching the rotors. When I got to the Ford dealership I told them about all the issues I was having and and left the car with them. Later that evening the service center said the car was done. When I picked it up the same issues were happening with the transmission and the brakes. I returned to the Ford service center and dropped off the car again the next day. The service center keeps on saying the transmission and clutch are fine, everything is normal and there are no other reported issues with this problem on the transmission. On the brakes, the service center did find that both rear pads had broken guides on them and they were allowing the pad to move around in the caliper. The service center fixed the brake issue and I haven't had anymore issues with that. Now on 10 Dec, I left my house and went to put the car in sixth gear and it wont go in, the gear will just grind. I pulled over and went through all the gears and sixth gear will not work. I have contacted my local Ford dealer and service center and have yet to hear anything back from them.
The contact owns a 2008 Ford Mustang. The contact stated that the vehicle was placed in reverse and the clutch pin fractured. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was confirmed that the clutch pin and the pedal assembly were fractured. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and the current mileage was 104,000.
The contact owns a 2011 Ford Mustang gt. The contact stated that while driving 55 mph, the vehicle would not shift into gear. The contact mentioned that there was and increase in engine rpms and the clutch pedal was depressed into the floorboard. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the clutch had burned out. As a result, the clutch needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure who did not offer any assistance. The VIN was not available. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 12,000 and the current mileage was 36,700.
Change gears from 3rd to 4th. Clutch pedal stayed on the floor and transmission would not shift. Nearly hit by another car due to sudden loss of acceleration. This has happen 3 times previously.
My 2012 Ford Mustang v6 with premium package has a 6 speed manual transmission. I can't get the vehicle into some gears. I have noticed this problem to happen when starting the vehicle the shifter does not go smoothly into 1st or reverse gear when pressing the clutch pedal. I have to press the clutch repeatedly and play with the shifter to get it into 1st and 2nd gear when starting from a stopped position. In addition, I have had difficulty changing gears when traveling more than 25 mph. The transmission does not let me go into 3rd or 4th gear without having me put it into 5th or 6th gear while pressing the clutch pedal. I had a 20 year old Acura integra that never gave me a problem and it had a 5 speed transmission with worn out synchros. My vehicle is fairly new and I never expected to have any issues with a car this new. This is a saftey hazard especially during emergency situations where I may have to downshift to gain more acceleration in order to avoid hitting something or getting me out of a dangerous situation. Luckily I have not been in a position where I have to downshift quickly as I will be put in a dangerous situation and can seriously injure myself or someone and maybe even be killed. I have noticed the shifting problem to get worse as I put more miles on the vehicle. I currently have under 2000 miles on the odometer. Please look further into this matter.
I have the mt-82 6 speed manual transmission in my 2012 v6 Mustang. It is very hard to shift into 1st and 2nd gears regardless of ambient temperature. I have driven manual transmissions since I was licenced 15 yrs ago, I have never experienced this kind of hard & grinding shifting from a new/newer vehicle. It's like shifting a 50 year old farm tractor! I have to use excessive force to shift into 1st gear from a stop even with the clutch pedal to the floor; sometimes requiring a "double clutch" just to get it into 1st gear. This extra effort to get into 1st gear from a stop takes my attention and eyes off the road and I have even rolled backwards while fighting the transmission. Then, once moving I have the same problem getting into 2nd gear; again causing me to divert almost all of my attention and eye sight from the road to inside the car getting into 2nd gear. Most shifting into 1st & 2nd gears are accompanied by metal grinding that I can feel and hear. The shifter has popped out of 2nd gear a few times causing the engine to red-line while getting on the freeway. Also, I have almost caused accidents while turning left at intersections fighting the transmission into 2nd gear. I have only experienced this shifting problem in 1st and 2nd gears; 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th shift very smooth for my vehicle. There is also a vibration while decelerating in 2nd and 3rd gears. I can feel it in the shifter handle, steering wheel, seat, and foot pedals. Not only am I disappointed in the shifting problem with my 2012 Mustang with 1,000 miles; I feel it is unsafe to drive.
(note: car is a Mustang gt 5 liter) this incident followed my initial drivetrain complaints to my local dealership and their replacement of my clutch pedal assembly. Entering a highway, I approached a speed of approximately 75 mph in 3rd gear, taking the engine close to 6k rpm. When attempting to shift into 4th with the clutch pedal fully pressed to the floor, the stick would not budge into the 4th gear slot. As the car was slowing down, I tried other gear slots: 5th, then 6th, 4th again, to 3rd. Nothing. Finally, I removed my left foot from the pedal altogether and noticed the pedal was stuck to the floor. After pumping it to no avail, I wedged my foot under the pedal to kick it back up. My drivetrain was once again responsive. I was already aware of a rumor that later model Mustangs had high rpm gear-shifting issues, but this was the first personal occurrence for me. Based on this suspicion, I attempted to recreate it on the way back home and I was once again able to freeze my clutch to the floor. My car is currently in for repair, and I believe they are replacing the clutch and pressure plate for their next fix attempt.
2012 Ford Mustang boss 302 with 4500 miles on the car. The clutch pedal sticks to the floor at high rpm only on the 3-4 shift. The pedal just hangs making it impossible to get the car into any gear until the rpms fall and then the clutch pedal will suddenly spring back to the fully released position with an audible sucking sound. I took the car to the dealer and they claim to not be able to replicate the issue. Every single time you try to shift at high rpm 3-4 the problem happens. The dealer also refused to perform the transmission fluid swap TSB to fix the crunch on 1-2 and 2-3 shift when the transmission is cold.
Here's what I'm experiencing. 1. Clutch pedal sticks to floor at higher rpm shifts (5000 plus) and will not release until rpm has lowered to less than 3500 rpm. Doesn’t matter what gear i’m shifting into. 2. I was locked into 2nd gear when clutch pedal was stuck to floor. The shifter would not allow me to pull out of 2nd to go to 3rd until I slowed down (less than 3500 rpm) and clutch released. Then once I pushed the clutch back in after it released I was able to shift from 2nd to 3rd. 3. At a higher rpm shift (5000 plus) I was not able to shift from 2nd to 3rd. I was locked out of 3rd gear. I was getting onto the interstate and I had to slow down and then at a lower rpm (about 3500-4000) then I was able to shift into 3rd. 4. Transmission will not allow me to go into reverse and 1st gear sometimes when clutch is pushed down to floor while the car is at a stop. If I let the clutch out and double pump it then it will let me but the transmission feels and sounds clunky. 5. Not allowed to shift from 1st to 2nd sometimes and when it does finally go into gear, it feels like the shifter doesn’t fully engage into 2nd. 6. Really hard sometimes to down shift back to 1st from any gear while driving with clutch fully depressed to floor. 7. Sometimes there is a slight grinding noise going into 2nd with clutch fully depressed to floor. 8. Slight grinding into 3rd sometimes with clutch fully depressed to floor. 9. Slight grinding into 5th sometimes with clutch fully depressed to floor. 10. Transmission feels and sounds clunky when shifting into all gears.
Car get stuck in gear, clutch wont work so you cant put in gear at a stoplight or slow down!,rough shifts, trans whines real loud, clutch pedal sticks to the floor!.
This issue has been going on for roughly 6 months (I have owned the car for almost a year as of this writing) when the vehicle is in motion, shifting from 4th to 5th gear causes a loud grinding noise. The clutch pedal was fully depressed at this time. This occurs at least once a week. Also, at one time the shifter got stuck between two gears when stopped at a stop light when trying to shift from neutral to first. At this time a car could have run into me while I was trying to get the car into gear. So far I have not taken the car into the shop to correct the failure, as I have learned Ford does not do anything to correct it. All they do is replace the transmission with the same defective part and/or put new fluid in. I am waiting to see if they will issue a recall and perform a proper repair for people who are running into these symptoms on the 2011 Ford Mustang gt's.
Well, my car just nearly got me into an accident today on my way to work. Uphill curve onto a state highway, run first out, go for second and. . . . . Nada. Go to third, lug-lug-lug, because I missed the opportunity to get to 2nd. Speed still descending. Traffic at my rear is closing in on me, and fast. This is a 60mph onramp. Go for first, walled out. Second, grind. I wound up having to pull off to the side of a curve and turn the car off, then back on again before it would let me get into 1st gear. Still can't get into second. I crawled all the way up the onramp in first, until I got to flat ground, then nearly redlined first before shifting to third to get back on the road again and headed to work. My car was just in for service on this shifting issue last week. They swapped the fluid and said they needed to order parts (I'm assuming clutch assembly, because mine feels like it is on its last legs, and probably the clutch pedal one too, because I noticed that the clutch pedal sticks on rev-matched downshifts. . . ). I almost parked it on the side of the road so I could call Ford roadside and have them tow it, but I had to be at work. These things never seem to happen when it's convenient enough to just send it in from exactly where it sits. The dealership I am dealing with has not called me back about the parts, even though they said the parts should be here in the middle of this week.
