My vehicle is a 2004 Ford Ranger XLT pickup truck with 4 wheel drive. The vehicle is in excellent mechanical condition. The brake system malfunctioned, allowing the brake pedal to hit the floor. This incident occurred while I was pulling into a parking spot on a snow covered parking lot. The air temperature was very cold (0 deg. F) at the time, and the 4x4 system on the vehicle was engaged. When I applied the brakes as I was pulling into the parking spot, the brake pedal hit the floor so the vehicle did not slow down and there was no pulsing sensation from abs. As a result, my vehicle collided with a parked vehicle immediately in front of my vehicle. My vehicle and the other vehicle were both damaged as a result of this brake system failure. I have tried to reproduce the problem many times and have been unable to do so. The Ford dealer in my town was unable to reproduce the failure and did not find any mechanical problem with the braking system. Also the dealer stated that the abs controller on my vehicle cannot be upgraded with new firmware. The dealer invoice for the brake inspection is attached. I have found other reports on Ford auto enthusiast forums of this same problem occurring to other Ford Ranger and explorer vehicles when the driver was making a tight turn at very slow speeds. So it seems there is a design defect with this particular Ford braking system.

Emergency brake failed completely. Emergency brake on this vehicle would occassionally freeze to brake drum while parked in wet, freezing conditions. This is with the emergency brakes fully released. Normally, a slight application of power would "pop" the brake free and then operate normally. On one occassion, the brake shoes were well frozen to the emergency brake drums (this vehicle has disc brakes with small brake drums only for the emergency brakes) and more power was needed to free the vehicle, associated with a louder "pop". After that, the emergency brakes were completely non-functional. The emergency brake pedal goes to the floor with no actuation of the emergency brakes. This vehicle is equipped with a manual transmission. There was a previous emergency brake recall on some vehicles of this model/year type with manual transmissions (NHTSA campaign id number 10v202000). In that recall, the consequence item states "a manual transmission vehicle parked in neutral without a fully applied parking brake may have unintended movement which may cause a crash. " I used the emergency brake everytime I drove the vehicle. My driveway is sloped and I applied the emergency brake when I exited the vehicle to open/close the garage door. Now I must shutoff and restart the vehicle everytime. I've done some research and found some things that may be useful. The emergency brake cables are intact and functioning properly all the way back to entry into the brake drums. The brake shoes are arranged in a top-bottom setup instead of the normal forward-aft shoe setup. This allows the lower shoe to set in any water that may accumulate on the lower area of the brake drum, freezing it to the drum in cold temperatures, even with the emergency brakes released. I'm reluctant to have this repaired back to its original condition since it will break again without a redesign.

Purchased this vehicle in 2007 with 8k miles and had some rust on the frame. Now, 2013 I have 24k miles and the frames is completely corroded and my brakes are failing due to the rust. Have already sanded the frame and painted, but the rust comes back. This a big safety concern because parts can break while driving.

Complete brake failure due to a leak over the rear driver side wheel. This occurred at low speed (10 mph), and I was able to stop the truck with the emergency brake. I thought the braking systems in modern trucks have redundant lines so that if there is a leak, only half the brakes fail?.
1996 Ford Ranger truck had equipment failure and was unable to slow down. The driver swerved to the right berm and got wedged between another vehicle and the bridge wall. The consumer stated his brakes failed. When he attempted to slow down, the brake pedal went to the floor. (ohio traffic crash report # 10-0535-91) letter updated 03/17/bf.

On slippery hard packed snow and/or ice on driving surfaces, my 1999 Ford Ranger brakes fail to work at all. I have 4 wheel abs. Just the idle of the engine will move vehicle along, even though I had 2 feet on the brake.

When applying the abs brakes, the vehicle brakes failed, causing consumer to lose braking power. Please describe.
Front brakes fail because they lock up upon stopping, and vehicle has only rear brakes to stop with.
