36 Tire Sidewall problem of the 2000 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 10/24/2000

My company owns 5 Ford Rangers. Over the past two months, I have been fighting with northpoint Ford and with firestone to get these tires repaired or replaced. I have had two trucks where the tires have split and got no response. One truck with less than 25,000 miles on it, the tires are worn out and the truck today that blew the sidewalls out and once again contacted firestone and northpoint Ford and they both are telling me it is the other ones responsibilitie to replace. So I am contacting you to see if you can help me so that I don't have to buy twenty tires to keep my drivers on the road safely. Thanking you in advance for your help. Carey gill. 41 Tire Sidewall problem of the 1999 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 09/23/2000

I was checking the air in the tires when I noticed visible splits, tears, and peelings on three of the sidewalls. I went to Ford they said they could not do anything because they are not under recall and the tire warranty has expired. Obviously there is a major problem. I have notified my insurance company of the problem and the local newstation. I do alot of driving but cannot afford to put new tires on right know. If the defects are as visible as they are now why can't anyone do something about it? (tiresize: 75r15 225)( dot number: tire size: 75r15 225 ).

42 Tire Sidewall problem of the 1999 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 09/22/2000

Tire sidewall blew out while backing up at slow speed. No evidence of any cut or abrasion on tire. The entire circumference of the tire at the sidewall on both sides appears to be soft and uneven. The remaining tires appear to have the same uneveness around the sidewall. I am aware of the recalls on wilderness at tires but it does not seem to include these 16 inch models. Should it? also please note that my vehicle was shipped from the factory with 4 of these tires but the spare was a 15" wilderness at. Ford notified me by letter that my tires were not part of the recall. There is clearly something wtrong here. ( dot number: tire size: p245/75r16 ).

43 Tire Sidewall problem of the 1998 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 09/18/2000

Appears to be a structural failure of tire between sidewall and tread, partial tread delamination, sidewall torn in several locations. There was no prior damage to the tire, and nothing was hit prior to blowout. Alloy wheel damaged, likely will need to be replaced. ( dot number: vnfc 1p4 tire size: p225/70r14 ).

45 Tire Sidewall problem of the 1998 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 09/04/2000

Driving along, luckilly not very fast. Tire shredded. I do not beleive I hit anything. The other three tires sidewalls right around the lettering are also starting to look funny. The black around the letters is coming off. ( dot number: d2uu tire size: p225-70-r1 ).

46 Tire Sidewall problem of the 1999 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 08/18/2000

Actual tread separation. It looked like the tires had cracked around the outside edge of the tread at the sidewall, and the two front tires looked like they had been "plugged" several times per tire. Firestone wanted to "sell" me tires. I finally got Ford to replace them. ( dot number: tire size: p245/75r16 ).

47 Tire Sidewall problem of the 1998 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 08/10/2000

All tires are showing cracks on sidewalls, this problem was reported to thomas Ford in beverly,MA. And the truck was dropped off for mant. And to check the tires, all Ford would say is that the tires were not on the recall list, when I asked if they looked at the cracks they said no,all they would do is check the dot code, I under stand that if they are not on the recall they would not do anything, but I feel theyy should have at least look at the cracking, I had provided them with photos and they said they would not even look at them ( I can email the photo to you if it would be of any help ) firestone was contacted by email but all I've gotten is an automated responce ( tracking # wt20000815_0000000266 ) when I have tried to contact them by phone it's just a long hold, and like you I can't stay on the phone for an hour just waiting to talk to someone my boss will kill me, tahanks for any help with this problem!!!( dot number: vnhl tire size: p235/75r15 ).

48 Tire Sidewall problem of the 2000 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 08/09/2000

Tires are showing signs of catostrophic failure. The tires are splitting at the tread /sidewall interface. Additionally the tires started to "thump / vibrate, and cause a steering wheel shimmy, and also caused a low speed rocking of the vehicle". I contacted two firestone dealers, and a Ford dealer, but they refused to replace the tires. I purchased new tires (michelin ltx) and that eliminated the previously mentioned problems. (dot number: w2 tiresize: p235-75r15).

49 Tire Sidewall problem of the 2000 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 08/08/2000

Firestone (p245/75r16) wilderness tire experienced a blowout on the right rear tire sidewall, the tire had 874 miles on it. Nlm.

50 Tire Sidewall problem of the 1999 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 08/05/2000

While driving on paved road at 45 mph sidewall blew out on right front tire. Vehicle swerved to the right and into the bar ditch along the side of the road. Ability to stear and brake the vehicle was drastically reduced. Upon taking the tire to the local firestone dealer I was told that I would have to pay $50. 00 to prorate the tire and have it replaced. I do not feel I should have to pay for a factory defective product. ( dot number: ).

51 Tire Sidewall problem of the 1999 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 08/01/2000

My tires haven't failed yet, but I wanted to advise you of my unusual tire wear, which may help you in your investigation. The door panel calls for the tires to be inflated at 30 psi, however, I got the truck from the dealer with the tires at 35 psi, the maximum recommended pressure on the tire's sidewall. I check the pressure every couple of months and they have never lost pressure, so I have never added air. I have always kept my tires inflated near the "maximum" level because I enjoy the improved fuel economy and a little road feel. Anyway, on the rear (drive) tires there is much more wear in the middle of the tread, as if the tires were over-inflated. I have also begun to notice an intermittent waffling of the tires on smooth surfaces, which felt almost as if I had a flat. I wonder whether this uneven wear, with the two edges having more tread than the center, can cause this "waffling" effect, which, in turn, can cause the tread to separate from the rest of the tire? just trying to help. Thanks. ( dot number: tire size: p22570r15 ).

52 Tire Sidewall problem of the 2000 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 07/25/2000

All four tires since purchase have problems holding air. No warning was given, the passenger side rear tire simply exploded (sidewall blow out) while driving on highway at approx. 50mph. ( dot number: tire size: p225/70r15 ).

53 Tire Sidewall problem of the 1999 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 07/12/2000

Tire underwent complete sidewall faliure, and partial tread seperation while driving at normal highway speeds. Entire sidewall of tire shreaded and seperated from tire, while there was partial tread seperation. Other than replacement of tire and minor damage to rim, there was no apparent damage to vehicle, possibly due to the slow speed at which the truck was proceeding at. After contacting a local Ford dealership(mullinax Ford, now renamed maroone Ford of margate), I was informed that while there was a recall on firestone wilderness 15" tires, the type on my truck, wilderness ht's, were not covered by the recall, and even though I had an equipment faliure, I would not get replacement tires for my vehicle, nor be compensated for the tire I had to replace at my own expense. ( dot number: tire size: p225/70r15 ).

54 Tire Sidewall problem of the 2000 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 05/25/2000

55 Tire Sidewall problem of the 1998 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 04/05/2000

Tire failed on freeway when sidewall ripped (about 7 inches) just under the tread line. ( dot number: tire size: 235/75 r15 ).

56 Tire Sidewall problem of the 1998 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 03/16/2000

Please add my name to the list of people who have experienced trouble with their Ford Ranger factory installed tires. My bad experience occurred while driving a straightaway on the local highway (h3) at approx. 55-60 mph. It was around 10:30 am and the temp was 80-85 with sunny skies. I had earlier noticed strange wear patterns, but my dealer informed me this was normal. The right rear tire completely came apart leaving only the sidewalls -- the tread detached completely. At the time I assumed it was merely a bad tire and purchased an identical replacement (at a local firestone dealer) to maintain a complete set. The dealer kept the faulty tire so I cannot provide it for inspection. Thankfully, no one was seriously injured although it was quite scary when the vehicle lost complete control. There didn't seem to be any danger of rollover, but my pickup bed was empty at the time so I'm unsure of the potential danger with a full load. I'm pretty sure I have no legal recourse against the manufacturor, but my experience is similar to the recent reports I've been hearing. I hope this info assists you in your investigation. The remaining tires on my truck are exhibiting strange wear patterns and an alignment doesn't seem to be the problem. If you need any further info please don't hesitate to contact me. The thought that these tires are responsible for deaths is very disturbing considering I drive on the highway daily and hawaii is typically hot and sunny. Thank you, jim delacy( dot number: tire size: p22570r14 ).

57 Tire Sidewall problem of the 2000 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 03/15/2000

This is the current recall tire. I have a slice in the tire that was pointed out at the time I bought the truck. At that time, the dealership said that this would not be a problem. Since that time there has been much talked about problems with these tires. Some talk about the slices in the tires, as well as the seperation problems. Now I have a slow leek in the rear left tire, (the one with the slice in it). It is a recall tire but the dealership said it would be at least 2-3 months before the replacements would be available in our area. So I took the truck to a tire repair shop to fix it, they refused to repair the tire due to this slice in the sidewall. In the meantime I am adding air to this tire every day to maintain it untill I can get my replacement tires. My question is, do I have any other options or recourse. No safety defect. (dot number: vd70 tiresize: p24575r16).

58 Tire Sidewall problem of the 1999 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 06/22/1999

Mail route includes sand, clay, & surfaced roads. I first heard a strange rubbing sound while on private sand road. I got out and observed a bubble on the sidewall of the right rear tire. I had no safe place to change the tire so I slowly drove the 1 mile back to the surfaced road. As I drove down the surfaced road, I noticed a lot of vibration in the rear of the vehicle. I pulled over to the shoulder to change the tire, as I was exiting the vehicle there was a load "pop" and the tire was flat! the service personnel at mike shad Ford let me see the tire as they took it from the rim. There was a generous amount of rubber powder, the steel belts were shredded and rusty. It appeared to me that the tire had come apart from the inside out. Myself, the technition, service advisor could not believe the tire had only 6700 miles on it. But it was original equipment. The dealer tire manager determined due to the amount of wear on the tread that I had to buy a new replacement. When I complained that the tire had to be defective he dissagreed. Not defective, abused! he authorised a $15. Adjustment and a free all wheel alignment. The second failure was nearly a year later but on the same wheel and same surfaced road. At 55mph I felt something slip or go loose in the rear end, followed by severe vibration. I pulled over to the shoulder immediatly, stopped, exited the vehicle and looked at the right rear tire. I found simular damage as the first time, a large bubble on the sidewall, smaller bubbles a ridges were the sidewall and tread meet, and a large bubble under the tread. This tire did not blow but the tire & wheel assembly were very hot! I had to let them cool about 25/30 minutes before I changed the tire. This tire is now my spare. At 19625 miles the original set of tires had to be replaced. With 14500 miles on this replacement set Ford notes all 5 tires require replacement due to excessive wear. Ford has told me they are warrentied for 50000 and firestone is responsi.

66 Tire Sidewall problem of the 1998 Ford Ranger

Tires are cracking at sidewall, indicates tire defect and not vehicle defect - I read recently that firestone is claiming it is a vehicle defect with the Ford explorer. These tires prove the problem is with the tires themselves. These wilderness ats have never been on an explorer, yet they are cracking and show the initial stages of tread separation. Although Ford is replacing these tires, I was told about a long waiting list that prevented immediate replacement. I went to sears auto center the other day and they can have them in under five days. Since these tires could fail me at any time, I am having to replace them at my own expense and seek reimbursement from Ford later. Although Ford is offering only $110 per tire, I will still be out $114. 78 (the difference) of my earnings to resolve this issue. I can assure you from my experience, firsestone/bridgestone's claims are not to be taken seriously. I have four tires that are proof that these tires are defective regardless of vehicle type. If they ague that the Ford explorer has a design defect and is unsafe, they must be willing to argue the same thing about the Ranger. These tires were kept at 30 psi and maintained. Please look into this claim for me. Thanks. (dot number: p235/r75 tiresize: 15-inch).

68 Tire Sidewall problem of the 1998 Ford Ranger

Dealer told me these tires was not part of recall, but the sidewalls appear to have a problem. From several feet away I see wavey places in the walls. There are no scuff marks on the walls. It seems the walls are very thin . Im fearful driving at highway speeds. (tiresize: 225/70/14)( dot number: tire size: 225/70/14 ).

69 Tire Sidewall problem of the 1996 Ford Ranger

Tires sidewall came open. (firestone p225/70r14).

70 Tire Sidewall problem of the 1999 Ford Ranger

This vehicle was owned by my brother who has since passed away. The vehicle was returned to Ford on a voluntary return. I have contacted firestone about these tires, but they said they are not going to do anything. One of the tires had a sidewall blowout one week after the truck was purchased. My brother bought 5 new tires for the truck when Ford and firestone balked at doing anything. This was before the recall came out. I still have the 5 firestone tires that are in question. (tiresize: 225/70r15)( dot number: tire size: 225/70r15 ).
