GMC Envoy owners have reported 41 problems related to car stall (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Failure of the dod lifter, also known as the active fuel management system. While at speed on the freeway, the dod lifter on cylinder #7 failed causing a misfire on the cylinder which caused teh engine to shake violently. This is the 2nd failure of a dod lifter on my truck. In Nov 2014, a dod lifter on cylinder #6 failed, causing a engine misfire and a violent shake. The cause of the failure was determined to be lack of oil pressurize the dod lifter. Upon deciding to rebuild the motor rather than replacing the motor, we decided to replace all internal components of the motor simply because the motor would need a full tear down anyway. The lifters, oil pressure solenoids of the dod lifters, rockers, rocker arms, springs and camshaft were all replaced thinking that we might as well rebuild the block with new components to save off any future issues. After 1 month in the GMC service center, the vehicle was back on the road in Dec 2014. This repair was $5,900. 00 in March 2016, yes 14 months later, a 2nd failure of a dod lifter occurred on cylinder #7. The vehicle exhibited the same issues as in Nov 2014. This failure occurred on the rebuilt motor on new components installed in Nov 2014. This repair will cost $2500 just to replace the 1 lifter. No other components. This leads me to believe that a the dod failure is more common and is a design flaw of the active fuel management system. This issue is more than a TSB issue, it should be a recall.

While driving the Envoy at about 45 mph, a warning light saying "reduced engine power" came on suddenly, the car dropped down to about 20 mph, and that continues to occur. I can turn off and restart the car, but the problem returns within a minute after driving it again. I started investigating what that means online, and, as with anything else on the internet, I see many opinions, guesses, and possibilities. Could be a bad sensor, bad throttle control, bad wire connections, etc. But this much appears clear: (1) it is a gm problem, and a very, very common one. (2) it is a dangerous problem. This seems pretty obvious - the car suddenly loses speed and evidently sometimes stalls out altogether. But hearing about so many other people's scary experiences just confirms this. (3) it can be difficult and expensive to diagnose and fix. When I think of these facts, coupled with gm's recent history, I immediately think "recall. " this certainly appears to be an appropriate situation for a manufacturer to step in and fix the issue before more people get angry with gm, get hurt, or get killed. I called the dealer who sold the car (I am the second owner), in columbus, ohio. I was told that I can bring it in for a diagnosis for $110. (gee, thanks - wouldn't have thought of that. ) the customer rep looked up the VIN and said that the vehicle was not eligible for recall or any special policy. Therefore, I am contacting you in hope that something else can be done.

When stopped in traffic or at a stop light, my vehicle will idle roughly and sometime stall. It does this in drive, neutral and park. I've had it checked and they couldn't find anything wrong. There are no codes showing a problem.

In the morning the car run fine, but once the engine is warm and I start to run arons it stalls. If I wait about 10min or so. . . I must speed home or to a safe area to let the egine cool. If I come back in a few hours, the truck will start with no problem. It has been to the shop more often then I remember. Is there anyone having these same issues?.
On 12/23/13, while parked the vehicle died. When restarting, it was a little slow but did end up starting. On 12/24/13, I had the battery tested and it showed that the cca's just needed a good charge so I let the vehicle run for 45 minutes. A few hours later, the vehicle would not even turn over. On 12/25/13, removed the battery and reinstalled it. The vehicle started fine and ran well for a few days. On 1/1/14, vehicle stalled while driving. Ended up restarting but I had to give it gas to do so. On 1/2/14, I started the car to warm it up and it started fine. I let it run for 20-30 minutes before attempting to drive it. When I got in the vehicle, it said that the brake system was not working and the stabilitrack light was flashing on and off intermittently. I had to get a cab to work & have it towed to the shop. I'm hoping to hear back tomorrow in regards to what is going on. Also, had to get a rental vehicle in the meantime for transportation.
In March 2012 I had motor mounts installed on my 2005 GMC Envoy at the dealership jay GMC Buick columbus georgia. On August 26,2013 they are telling me I need new motor mounts because of the age of vehicle and miles they need to be replace. I guess parts are old and professional installing is old to. During this same time had a tune-up {major} and now have to have coil and plug install. This make it seem paying for professional serve is a waste of time. My fuel injector also needs cleaning again. In the future I can only expect 40,000 miles on anything fixed by dealer.

I was stopped at a traffic light , I was listening to my radio . The light changed I put my foot on the gas pedal and truck didn't move. . It was then I realized the it stalled. I put in neutral and started it back up. And continued to work. After this initial time it was happening two to three a day , atleast three times a week for months. . I took it back to dealer 15 times . I have a paper trail for this. They told me they could not find anything wrong with it. I have had my vehicle for going three years and have only put 11,000 miles becauseii am afraid to drive it any long distance . I don't want to break down and be stuck alone. I have already put a complaint into gm about this and they have done nothing . It is total bull. All I want is my car fix so I can enjoy it. I am paying for a car that just sits 80% if the time. Look st on star if you don't believe me. Please help me get my car fix right.

Vehicle has been losing voltage when car is started and in idle position. When car is driving the voltage is always reading ok but when your at a stop light then all the instrument lights dim and the battery gets down to 10 and sometimes the car starts to stall. Brought the car to darcy motors in joliet, IL and they said its normal and the Envoys experience this. I don't believe this and the car is 3 yrs old and has 80k for miles and its been running fine up until the past 2mo since we have been experiencing problems. We even went to sears and purchased a new battery and it still has the same problems. I brought the Envoy to autozone and pepboys and both places checked the alternator, battery and all cabled and connections and all tested good. I don't know what the problem is but GMC needs to resolve this issue ASAP.
I purchased a 2005 GMC Envoy sle in March of 2006. Since I purchased the vehicle it has stalled several times. Once while stopped waiting for traffic to resume and numerous times while driving at a very slow rate of speed. I have taken it to the dealer twice and both times they have said that they can not find what the problem is.
: the contact stated while driving 35 mph under normal road conditions, the vehicle stalled. There were no warnings prior to the incident. The vehicle was taken to the service dealer, who was not able to find the problem.
GMC Envoy SUV (4. 2) inline 6-cylinder. Vehicle has stalled five times intermittently over the past six months. It stalls out when you begin to stop or start to accelerate from a stop or just while idling. Luckily it hasn't been when I was trying to pass or merge in traffic. The first time was around 23,000 and the second time 23,500. The next occurrence happened while it was sitting in a parking lot idling and it died after running for 5-8 minutes. I took it to the dealer and they said it was the throttle body that needed cleaning - done. Six weeks later and 1500 miles it stalled when I was trying to make a u-turn in st. Petersburg and I nearly got rear ended. Dealer kept it two days and did nothing since they couldn't duplicate problem and couldn't get anything from the computer. I took it back to the dealer on 7/21 for regular maintenance (oil change, fuel filter change, and a/c repair-bad clutch). The dealer said they had two computer module updates, one to fix stalls. Three days later it stalled in jacksonville traffic at a stop light. I have taken it back for a fourth time to the dealer and left for a week. Dealer said vehicle idling rough but computer not registering problem so nothing was done, again. I e-mailed gm and I have had no reply in two weeks. I see where a person with a v8 version is having the same problem. This is an accident waiting to happen.
My 2002 Envoy has stalled 3 times now while traveling on the highway. Each time the engine quits and will not restart until disconnecting and re-connecting the battery. Since this last time the car displays abs light and speedometer does not work even after disconnecting battery. Dealer says I have to replace a computer now. Sounds like recall 04v289000 but my VIN is not included in that recall.
2004 GMC Envoy stalls when accelerating from a stop. This problem occurred while in drive or reverse. The vehicle has been taken to be repaired five times but the problem still exist. During the most recent incident the vehicle stalled while making a left turn into traffic. The vehicle was taken to be repaired again and was given back tot he consumer two days later, supposedly fixed.
My 2004 GMC Envoy xuv (v6) has an engine problem. It has stalled on 3 occassions. We told the dealer service department about the incident and they did a diagnostic test on it. They said the computer on the Envoy didn't have a record of the incident. On the 1st incident it happened when pulling out of a parking spot. The 2nd time was after reversing out of a driveway and then driving forward out of the driveway. The 3rd time was attempting to drive forward after waiting for the garage door to open.
Consumer 2005 GMC Envoy has a defect that can not be repaired. Vehicle stalled. The hazard lights came on when the turn signal was in use. The dealer replaced a bad flasher.
The contact owns a 2004 GMC Envoy xuv. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle suddenly stalled. After restarting the engine, the vehicle would operate as normal. The contact also stated that after turning the engine off and removing the ignition key, the instrument panel and gauges would continue to illuminate causing the battery power to drain. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed that the ignition switch failed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 24,000.
While driving 70 mph vehicle stalled. As result, vehicle coasted to the side of the road. Consumer stated he had to wait 30 minutes before starting vehicle again.
I was driving along at highway speeds when my 1998 GMC Envoy with 43162 miles stopped accelerating. When I stepped harder on the gas, the engine would not rev and power began to run out from the engine. The motor stalled and yet the electricity was still on in the car. I began to lose braking power and steering became harder. I was able to pull off the road, turn off and turn the car back on again. But the car stalled again and again, five (5) times in six (6) miles. This happened several years back, and has continued to happen intermittenly. I always thought it happened when I got below 1/4 of a tank of gas, but tonight I was at half a tank. The only thing I noticed was the ooil pressure gague was at slightly right of middle, like around 60 I think, which happens only occasionally. Finally I got home and, with the car in park, put continuous even pressure on the accelerator but the number of rpms was varying, by up to 1000 or 1500, from 3500 down to 2000 -- up and back continuously but not on an even cycle. It's very dangerous when this happens unexpectedly at highway speeds and I have brought it to the dealer before to report this (since around 1998 or 1999) but this keeps happening. I only had those few seconds when the motor was not accelerating but the car had not yet stalled to react -- put on the hazard lights, pull off the road, come to a stop -- and luckily I knew what to do or else I could have been killed by someone rear-ending my car. Please help, I am terrified of the car and have lost all confidence in it, yet again.

My Envoy xuv (8cyl) has engine trouble, which GMC says is normal. It occasionally has extremely rough idle, more times than not, it hesitates as if trying to decide if it'll stall out or not. Usually this happens when attempting to resume driving after sitting at a light or after other complete stop. I feel that this one day may get me rear ended or t-boned by another car. Sadly, I noticed this since the first day I drove it off the lot brand new.
I am concern about safety defect that exist in my GMC Envoy 2002. I own this vehicle since March 2002 (1 year) and it stalled 5 times already when driving. It happend 3 times when I stopped my vihicle at red traffic light and 2 times when breaking to slow down, driving downhill before a curve. This 2 times have scared me so much that I am affraid to use this car again. I drive cars for 28 years and nothing like that has happend to me in my life. Engine stops working, all lights go out and there is no control over the car whatsoever. I am happy no one got hurt in those incidents. This car has only 16k miles on it and has been in service numerous times already, including power steering leak - 2 times repaired. I do not think driving this car is safe and for that reason I cannot use it anymore.
The vehicle stalled without warning.
Vehicle stalls without warning while driving, posing a safety hazard for other motorists. Dealer originally diagnosed and replaced ignition switch, but problem is still occurring. Ph.

Vehicle stalls intermittently while driving. Dealer has serviced 4 times, but has not been able to duplicate or diagnose cause.
Vehicle lost power with owner 1 traveling down a hill at 35mph, then stalled again with owner 2 traveling at 60mph. Brought to dealer, said couldn't replicate problem. Also said unaware of any bulletins and that they called technician assist and no one knew of any similar problems.
