2 Cooling Fan problem of the 2005 GMC Envoy

Failure Date: 04/17/2012

I have been reading a lot and it seems to be a common problem in the 2005 series GMC Envoy, chevy trailblazer. Basically the cooling fan clutch goes bad easily and quickly. When you start the engine it is fine but after the clutch needs to engage it either clicks, and doesnt engage or it just makes that common jet engine roaring. This is all to common and gm needs to do something about it. There have been people with 40,000 miles or 140,000. I my self am on my second one and it is already doing to the same thing after 5 months.

6 Cooling Fan problem of the 2003 GMC Envoy

Failure Date: 10/30/2007

Vehicle cooling fan clutch making ticking sounds due to the "pulsing of the solenoid as described in the technical service bulletin released by general motors (#05-06-06-004), which specifies not to replace fan clutch, but reprogram the pcm. This should be a recall covered by gm, since no parts are broken and the only problem is with the manufacturer's software. Consumer can only get this fixed by gm dealer. This expense should be covered under a recall by gm since it involves only the defective computer program. The are not parts to replace, just a reprogramming of the computer.

7 Cooling Fan problem of the 2002 GMC Envoy

Failure Date: 08/31/2007

A couple of months ago I took my vehicle in for several complaints and a repair under warranty. I explained to the dealer the loud fan noise, loss of power during this noise, which happened occasionally upon start up and disappeared after a mile or two of travel. At this time I was told they could not locate the problem. Now the noise is constant. I had a mechanic drive it during this noise and he indicated it was a failed clutch fan. In my research to find a TSB (aka technical service bulletin) related to my issue, I was able to find such a bulletin, amongst many customer complaints with the same issue.

Failure Date: 06/05/2007

I have a 2003 GMC Envoy which developed a problem with the fan clutch going bad which an extremely large number of people who own this model and the trailbrazer had also. The dealership service manager told me that they were completely backed up for a few days and could not get to my problem but without even checking it out, he knew what the problem was and said they have had to replace many. I feel as though there should be a recall due to the high volume of this problem. . Read more...

10 Cooling Fan problem of the 2002 GMC Envoy

Failure Date: 05/07/2007

Already replaced the fan clutch at 39000 miles. It cost me close to $800, $300+ for the new fan , and $400+ for labor. The dealer installed the new computer software. Now at 42700 miles the fan clutch, the thermostat broken. The bad news, I shipped this Envoy to the dominican republic , already talking to the local dealer. My question to all was, in observation of all the fan clutch problems, did this require a recall. Now , that I knew about so many people having this problem, either the dealer and GMC refund me for the first fan clutch and repair or replace with current one, or I will definitely sue them. Has anyone taken this action?.

11 Cooling Fan problem of the 2004 GMC Envoy

Failure Date: 02/09/2007

I purchased a 2004 Envoy with 18,000 miles in the summer of 2006. Beginning in January 2007, my 3 year old son let me know that he was cold while riding in the back seat and begged that I turn off the air. Turns out that the vent in the back of the car was blowing ice cold air on my son. The temperature outside was approximately 10 degrees. I called and scheduled a time to take my car into the dealership, as it was still under warranty. I found out that the vehicle had a "bulletin" stating that GMC was familiar that there was heat failure in the back of the cars, but the company was choosing not to do a full recall. Instead, they were waiting for customers to discover the problem and bring it in for repair. They had to install a special pump, however, this still did not fix the problem. Instead, it just modified the temperature of the air from approximately 20 degrees to maybe 50 degrees. Not a lot of comfort in a minnesota winter. I was informed that bottom line, it was a design flaw with the vehicle, and that I could just try to force the air from the front of the car to the back seat. What is the point of having vents in the back of the car, and having a separate heating element specifically for the back of the car? I purchased this car because I thought that with the vents in the back, it would help heat the car faster in the winter, helping to keep my son warm. I do not believe that heat should be a luxury, and am disappointed that GMC would not do more to correct the problem. I want it to be known to the general public that this is a problem in the Envoy and trailblazer, especially for families with small children who do not have a voice to let their parents know the icy air blowing on them.

12 Cooling Fan problem of the 2002 GMC Envoy

Failure Date: 09/23/2006

I drive a 2002 GMC Envoy and for the last 2&1/2 years during the summer, I usually notice that the fan seems to run very frequently. After a few minutes it usually stops and I don't think about it again until we restart it. We've taken it to two different dealerships including the one we purchased it from and they tell us there is nothing wrong with the car-it's just hot outside and the engine needs to be cooled by the fan so it runs longer and louder. Today, I took it in because it would not quit running and my check engine light came on. They want $700 to fix the fan clutch which we've been trying to tell them wasn't operating correctly this whole time.

13 Cooling Fan problem of the 2002 GMC Envoy

Failure Date: 07/15/2006

Last year (2005) the clutch fan locked up and stayed locked up until we took it to a gm dealer. They said there was a bulletin on this and the pcm needed to be re-programmed. That solved the problem. The vehicle looses power, won,t shift properly and this happens without notice. One minute it's fine and then it's not. Now one year later the same problem has occurred. This is ridiculous!! I now have to take it to a dealer and pay to have it re-programmed. If this is a continuing problem, I don't understand why gm can't just replace the chip that holds the code, and be done with it.

14 Cooling Fan problem of the 2002 GMC Envoy

Failure Date: 06/17/2006

Engine tended to rev at a high level until warmed up. Finally would not come down to a normal level due to a failed fan clutch. Vehicle was out of warranty, and dealer quoted $800 for repairs. Had the fan clutch replaced independently, which now has us back to the original high level of revving for several minutes before running normal. Disappointed to see the number of similar failures, and yet the dealer acts like this is an unheard of event.

15 Cooling Fan problem of the 2002 GMC Envoy

Failure Date: 05/01/2006

1) periodic loud, but not sustained, engine fan roaring noise for 1-2 years. 2) noise finally would not stop and was diagnosed as seized fan clutch, after warranty expiration. 3) replacement of cooling fan clutch at a cost of $630. 16 on a vehicle with only 37,188 miles.

16 Cooling Fan problem of the 2006 GMC Envoy

Failure Date: 04/14/2006

: the contact stated that the vehicle does not accelerate smoothly and makes a loud noise during the first 3 minutes of driving. The accelerator pedal must be depressed all the way to the floor for the vehicle to move, and then normal acceleration begins after driving 3 minutes. The vehicle was taken to the dealer on 05/02/06 who could not duplicate the problem. The dealer representative inspected the vehicle on 07/20/06 and determined that the clutch fan that cools the engine created the noise but could not determine the cause for the acceleration problem. The manufacturer was alerted on numerous occasions who finally identified that it is normal for the vehicle's acceleration to perform in the documented manner. Updated 08/15/06. 8jb.

18 Cooling Fan problem of the 2004 GMC Envoy

Failure Date: 11/01/2005

Headlights, driving lights and all interior lighting dim and flicker approx every 30 seconds. Has been this way for over 10 days, dealer cannot diagnose problem until the "service engine soon" light comes on, which it hasn't. It is nearly impossible to drive at night with dim, flashing, headlights, and is confusing to other drivers. Also, a fan can be heard blowing off & on approx once every minute, and this is with the vehicle completely turned off and the key out of the ignition. This is constant, I'm concerned the battery will be dead and the car won't start, or that the lights will completely go out while I am driving at night. Rear passenger door locks suddenly stopped working with the remote and the door unlock switch on the driver's door. I have to climb over the front seat into the back to physically unlock the door to remove my children from the car.

Air conditioner intermitentlly blows warm air. 23 Cooling Fan problem of the 2003 GMC Envoy

Failure Date: 01/01/2003

2003 GMC Envoy with a list of problems ** the consumer began to hear a knocking and pinging in the engine on cold starts and felt a hesitation when the automatic transmission shifted into gear. After many complaints, it was finally discovered the engine knock was due to shorter pistons in the re-designed engine and the hesitation in the transmission shifting required reprogramming. The consumer was told he would have to live with the engine knock, because it could be more trouble taking the engine apart. On a separate occasion, the engine stalled due to the battery dying. From April 2004 to October 2004 the battery failed several times and had to be re-charged. During that same time the engine light illuminated and each time it happened, the dealer would have to reprogram the engine computer. The radio was not functioning properly which primarily consisted of static. The driver information center control knobs as well as the radio knobs wore out. The front center console was loose. It was discovered that the engine light was coming on because the third stop light that's on the top of the liftgate malfunctioned. There was a short circuit in the stop light. The cooling fan broke, the brakes and the left front head lamp had to be replaced. The rear tail lights, directional and signal lights have been replaced several times. The lug nut broke while a replacement tire was being mounted on the vehicle. The front stabilizer linkage was replaced. The gas tank had to be replaced along with the fuel lines and a seal on the tank due to a leak. The seat belt was designed poorly and the belt cuts into the consumers neck. The drivers side door didn't close properly, the windshield wipers were replaced within the first 2 years.

24 Cooling Fan problem of the 2002 GMC Envoy

Failure Date: 12/31/2002

This is my second letter to your company GMC. Plain and simple all I am looking for is the value of my investment. I have no desire to get anything free nor am I just trying to get a new vehicle. The 2002 Envoy I purchased from you a year and a half ago would be fine if I did not have so many problems with it. About a month ago it had to have a new motor and this past week it had to go back to the shop to have a fan replaced at a cost of $800. I expect that next month I will be paying $500 plus dollars for some other repair. I knew that once this repair was done to the most important system of the vehicle I would have major problems for as long as I have this Envoy. I am not going to allow this company to keep me in this situation. This is my final attempt to reason with GMC to work out some way for me to get a dependable vehicle that affords me the years of service any reasonable person would expect for a 30k investment. My GMC sr # is 1-5521-9927. I am quite aware of your assertion that you replaced the engine out of warranty free of charge. I would counter that claim by saying that the problems with the engine started long before the warranty expired. I have the service contract to show this. My point is I am still stuck with a 2002 GMC truck that has suffered a major engine failure and all the problems that come with that failure and this is just 2003. I would also say that the very fact that the engine failed so soon does not speak well of this vehicle or your company. I hope this is not the standard you have established for your vehicle. Now only a few weeks after the engine is replaced I am faced with the truck going back to the shop for a major repair. I still have not mentioned the other problems I have had with the Envoy. Letters to the better business bureau, and consumer protection agency will also be written. Please send me a written response to this letter. Kelvin oneal buck, customer.
