36 Fuel Pump problem of the 2003 GMC Envoy

Failure Date: 02/09/2008

We smelled gas fumes and was losing fuel out of the top of gas tank. The fuel tank was removed and we found gas standing on top of the tank. We found the fuel pump had rusted and the metal lines coming out of the pum was leaking. We order a new pump and filter installed them and put fuel tank back in truck. Now it is ok no fumes or leaks.

Failure Date: 02/04/2008

We have a 2002 GMC Envoy with approx 77,000 miles, the truck has strong scent of fuel in the garage and out doors. I understand that the fuel pump module corrodes and is common problem on these vehicles. I believe that gm should cover this under recall could have serious fire. I believe it is an engineering defect.

40 Fuel Pump problem of the 2002 GMC Envoy

Failure Date: 09/14/2007

Noticed the smell of gas. Took to dealer where purchased. Fuel pump was fine, but the tube had corroded. Extended warranty purchased will not cover this because the pump did not fail. Failure was due to corrosion. The vehicle is only 5 years old! cost estimate is over $600. 00 to fix. Have to replace pump also. When repaired, I will ask for the old part. This vehicle has been in shop for repairs more than any one I have ever owned. (front wheel bearings went at about the same time, but were covered under the warranty).

41 Fuel Pump problem of the 2003 GMC Envoy

Failure Date: 05/19/2007

Smelled fuel for several weeks. It gradually got worse, from just smelling it when I was outside the vehicle to smelling inside. Took to gm dealership in town. The dealership replaced the fuel sending unit. It had corroded to the point that when fuel was pumping it pumped fuel onto the top of the tank. $750. 00 was the bill.

42 Fuel Pump problem of the 2002 GMC Envoy

Failure Date: 03/26/2007

2002 GMC Envoy fuel smell. Took to 2 different gm dealers before problem was found. The 2nd gm dealer found it to be the fuel pump module which was rusted and leaking gas. Gm would not stand behind this problem as she was the second owner. The problem is the way metal fuel pump module sits in the recessed portion middle of the plastic fuel tank invites moisture, rust , salt, corrosion etc. Replaced at our expense of $520. 00 this is a design problem.

43 Fuel Pump problem of the 2003 GMC Envoy

Failure Date: 03/01/2007

Fuel pump module (fuel sending unit) corrodes and leaks fuel. And give faulty reading at the gas reading gauge. Not able to check if tank is empty.

44 Fuel Pump problem of the 2003 GMC Envoy

Failure Date: 02/22/2007

2003 GMC Envoy xl fuel leak, my 2003 Envoy xl developed a smell of gas, became stronger as time went by. The vehicle was taken to a GMC dealer, who found that the fuel pump module was leaking because of corrosion. We had to have the fuel pump module replaced at a cost of $953. 10. The vehicle had 40,754 miles on it, and is 4 years old. The old part is not avaliable, the dealer kept it (mike smith Buick GMC transit road lockport n. Y. ).

45 Fuel Pump problem of the 2002 GMC Envoy

Failure Date: 01/28/2007

Gas smell both in and out of vehicle. Within a couple of days gas would leak after car was driven. Fuel pump leaked due to rusted pipe on fuel pump to fuel line. It is the only exposed steel fitting and sits on top of the gas tank where water and moisture can collect, which is then conducive to rusting.

46 Fuel Pump problem of the 2003 GMC Envoy

Failure Date: 01/15/2007

Gasoline odor outside and inside vehicle. Dealer found severe corrosion of fuel pump module, requiring replacement. They stated it was a common failure and had many prior examples.

47 Fuel Pump problem of the 2005 GMC Envoy

Failure Date: 01/01/2007

Repeat problems since car was purchased brand new at dealers. Air /O2 sensors defective/replaced. Defective fuel pump/fuel sensor/electronic gas gauge; flickering/dimming headlights; freezing/inability to control driver's side seat and controls. 1/4 of front instrument panel lights out; drivers side seat control lighting 1/4 out; check engine light and low fuel light on continuously since 1997. Tie rods both replaced as well as both front sway bars. Immediately following vehicle purchase, check engine light would continuously go off. I would call onstar at which point I was told to take car in for repair w/I 7-10 days (often told a problem w/powertrain or transmission) . At dealers service dept, told over and over again after tons of worry, concern and time spent, that electrical system on this car tends to trip/trigger check engine light and they would just reset it so after awhile, I began to disregard the light as I was in the dealership almost weekly. Approx 2 yrs after purchase, filled up gas tank and fuel light showed "low fuel". Went back up to full, dropped to 1/2 and back to empty. Went back to full after car was turned off and continued to do this. After about 2 weeks, constantly stays at empty. Called repair shop and was told approx $700-800 to drop tank and replace fuel sensor which I could not afford and began to track odometer and refill tank after 200 miles driven after fill up. Have been doing this for 5 years. Jan 29,2011, I go for emission test. Fail d/t low fuel and check engine light being on. Go to mechanic, approx $950 repair. Check engine light goes off. . . And back on next day. Read thousands of posts online and am finding many, many Envoy owners experiencing same problems as mine. These are safety issues and gm should issue a recall on entire fuel and electrical system. Please call for questions/clarification.

48 Fuel Pump problem of the 2002 GMC Envoy

Failure Date: 08/12/2006

The GMC Envoy XLT experiences a total loss of power under the following conditions. When the fuel tank is at or below a quarter tank of gas the vehicle's gas pedal becomes inoperable and the forward velocity is lost to the point that if you are in traffic the vehicle will immediately began to slow down resulting in a completely hazardous and unsafe situation where the driver has no choice but to pull off the road or be rear ended. This has occurred on several occasions only under the conditions described above. Several GMC Envoy XLT owners have expressed the same situation. This has been reported to GMC in 2005 but it appears that the problem is known but they aren't accepting responsibility as a manufacturer. Possible indicators may be the fuel pump assembly, fuel pressure regulator, or some other vital componet in the fuel system. I am sure gm knows.

49 Fuel Pump problem of the 2002 GMC Envoy

Failure Date: 11/12/2005

Was driving at 65 mph on highway. Depressed accelerator and vehicle did not accelerate. Went to pull over and noticed there was no power steering or power brakes. Motor had stalled. The vehicle behind me nearly collided with me as I could not maintain speed and I had to swerve amongst traffic to get to break down lane. Tried to re-start in breakdown lane and incident repeated within 100 yds. Vehicle was towed to GMC dealer for service. Dealer had vehicle fail at least 3 times on roadway under same conditions over a period of 4 days. Dealer diagnosed failure of fuel pump module (pump, sensor, filter). Parts are being replaced today. After an internet search, I learned this is a "common issue" with this model vehicle. Should be a recall or preventive maintenance bulletin.

50 Fuel Pump problem of the 2005 GMC Envoy

Failure Date: 04/18/2005

My son was killed in a rollover accident on 4/18/06. He was ejected through the driver's side door in which the top part of the door was pulled away from the roof of the car during the rollover. By looking at the tire tracks of the accident, he was just entering the on ramp of the road and the tracks show no skid marks, swerving, etc, just a straight line into the ditch as if he didnt have control of the steering or brakes, possible stalling ?? both tires on the driver's side were flattened. Air bags were never deployed.

51 Fuel Pump problem of the 2004 GMC Envoy

2004 Envoy xl VIN [xxx] started as fuel smell, now leaking in the area where fuel pump attach's to tank milage 126224. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

52 Fuel Pump problem of the 2003 GMC Envoy

Failure Date: 11/27/2002

I bought a 2003 Envoy xl 11 days before the incident. We went into a restaurant, came back out after eating and the car would not start. I was 150 miles away from home. The car had less than 1000 miles on it and had to be towed away. I had to leave the car, get a rental (which was paid for), and was told it was the fuel pump, which the dealer stated they had never had happen before. I told the dealer I was not comfortable with that car, but was told this was a unheard of problem.
