My 1999 GMC Sierra developed, over the past four months complete failure of the brake rotors on all four wheels. The brakes pads did not fail but they caused a groove to form in all four brake rotors. The rotors are pitted, rusted and worn below minimun thicknesses on all four wheels. The brake rotors are flaking and chipping around the edges and display a groove that is more than 3/8" below the normal thickness of the rotor. The rotors appear on first glance to have come off of a truck that is very much older than three years. The Sierra truck is also exibiting the same characteristics as the trucks mentioned in NHTSA campain id number 00v232008. When the truck is almost at a complete stop, the abs system activates and the vehicle shudders to a stop. The description in the above mentioned id number is the exact behaivior that promted me to take the truck to my mechanic, this truck was checked in April of 2002 and no brake problems were spotted. The repair job cost more than $700 to repair and my mechanic stated that he believes that the brake rotors should not have failed in this manner, that the type of failure that is indicated usually occures with worn brake pads, the brake pads in this case were not worn to the point of needing replacement.
Vehicle vibrates when brakes are applied at any speed. Consumer's mechanic found that front and rear brakes were rusted. Dealer stated brakes were normal.
Vehicle went through inspection in may of 2001. Techician stated that rotors were pitted, showing spots where big pieces were broken off. Before inspection brakes made a squeaky and grinding noise. As problem increased brakes began to chatter. Rear brake rotors were replaced and the front rotors still remained on vehicle.
Vehicle did not pass inspection due to rusted brake rotors. This problem wore away the shoes which were only 50% of the shoes braking. The consumer was told that this was a gm problem.
Consumer stated while having vehicle serviced, technician noticed both rear rotors were rusted.
