29 Brake Electric Antilock problem

Failure Date: 11/13/2003

I have owned this vehicle for about 18 months. Shortly after buying the vehicle (certified), I took it to the dealer complaining of what I thought was unusual attributes of the abs system. I was told they could not find any problems. About one year later, in may of 2003, my abs problems became severe, in that at low speeds, such as turning into parking spaces or stopping at intersections, the abs would come on and stay on for 3-4 seconds, rendering the brakes useless for that time period. During this time period, this did result in my vehicle striking a chain link fence with no damage. To prevent this problem from occurring further, I pulled the abs fuse and took the vehicle to the dealer, after first complaining to gm. The dealer was very helpful, and diagnosed the problem as a faulty left front hub. Gm and the dealer limited my cost to $100 on the $500 repair. This appeared to fix the problem, until recently. During the past several weeks, the problem has returned, and again rendered the truck very dangerous, and again I pulled the abs fuse and took it to the dealer. Again, the dealer was very helpful, and diagnosed the problem this time as a faulty abs electronic brake control module. Again, they offered compensation, but to a lesser degree. I paid $500 for the $1000 repair. It appears through my research on the internet, including the NHTSA site, that I am not the only one this has happened to. I believe this is a safety issue that is not limited to my vehicle. I am lucky in that I did not cause injury to myself or others in any of the many instances where this problem surfaced. I was very lucky a few times.

The road and weather conditions were hard and salty. This is in maine. Consumer keeps having a dead battery, and back end has swung around because she can't use the abs system, because it has been disconnected. If the abs system was not disconnected the vehicle would have a dead battery. Consumer contacted gm, and filed complaint twice. They responded by saying "good luck". Consumer even suggested that gm send a new brake system by mail, and they would install personally. Consumer has not received a response.

35 Brake Electric Antilock problem

Failure Date: 06/28/2002

At slow speeds there is a clanking sound in the brakes, and can be felt in the brake pedal on the consumer's foot. This has been a problem since 2002. The vehicle has been in the repair shop 3 times for the same problem. The first time, the vehicle was involved in an accident in the parking lot. The owner was driving 5 mph or less and had no brake control, and the pedal was working against the driver. The owner took the vehicle back to the shop 2 more times for the same problem. Gm, the manufacturer came and inspected the truck. Gm would not allow the truck to be fixed by the dealership until they inspected it. The dealerships report stated that they replaced the right front hub bearing after testing and the found bearing caused unwanted abs operation during slow speeds. There were no injuries in the crash.
