I was approaching an intersection where traffic was stopped for a red light. I applied the brakes and was decreasing speed from approx 35 mph. At approx. 10-15 mph the brake pedal went to the floor without any warning or sensor detection and the brakes failed. I held the pedal to the floor, immediately shifted to low gear and drifted to the right shoulder to avoid the stopped traffic. I slowly moved the vehicle to a safe place. In a short distance the service brake system warning activated but there was no warning prior to failure. The truck was taken to my mechanic where it was found that the brake line on the left frame rail had failed under pressure due to extreme rust. It was also determined that all the brake lines, emergency brake cable and brake plates were rusted far in advance of expectations for my model year and mileage. All brake lines have to be replaced because another failure is certain if only the blown line is replaced. I contacted the dealership that sold and has serviced my vehicle and they stated that there was no assistance or recall for rusted brake lines even though there are numerous complaints.

This is the continuing story of the unsafe braking system on my 1999 GMC truck. On 7/15/14 as I went to stop at a red light my brake pedal began to slow the truck and then the pedal travel almost to the floor, the red warning light came on and I had to use the emergency brake to stop. I was very close to home and managed to slowly make it safely back where I discovered, for the third time, that my brake line had rusted through. I had lost a pint of fluid and later found the leaking brake line. This will be the third time I have had to change the rusty brake lines on my truck. I realize my vehicle is old, but this has been a recurring problem for at least ten years. My 1976 pontiac firebird still has it's original brake lines that show no signs of rust. My GMC brake lines are completely rusted. I have spent more than $5000 on repairing the brakes on this vehicle since purchasing it new in 1999. I have had more than five very close close calls with assorted brake failures with the rusty brake lines, faulty abs sensors and defective wheel hubs. I am glad that I am writing this complaint and not my next of kin.

After exiting onto the highway and attempting to brake to make a right turn I experienced catastrophic brake failure. When the brake pedal was applied there was no pressure, and the pedal went straight to the floor. No warning lights or sensors were activated before the total brake failure. The vehicle was towed to a local GMC dealership. The dealership advised me that the brake line "blew out" from the front left caliper because of rust. I researched such problems and found that similar complaints were numerous and that the NHTSA had initiated an inquiry/investigations into excessive rust on brake components of GMC vehicles causing this type of total brake failure.
When operating at low speeds,I would turn the wheel to left and steering felt sluggish, felt like a rubbing and feels like vehicle would stall. Brought to local garage, they were able to duplicate problem but had solutions. They checked power steering pump, brake sensors, serpentine belt, fluids. . . All checked out fine.

Why is it that four people I know who own GMC vehicles all have had to disconnect their abs systems by pulling the fuse? the wheel sensors have become defective and are very expensive to repair or replace. Isn't the abs system supposed to be a safety feature? I think something must be wrong with the set-up or design. Gm should have to recall them.

The contact owns a 2001 GMC Sierra. The contact stated that while reversing from a residential garage and applying the brakes, the brakes would not respond. The contact then shifted into park in order to stop the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated that the anti lock brake sensors would need to be replaced under recall NHTSA campaign id number: 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic:anti lock). The vehicle was repaired under the recall yet the failure recurred within one year. The manufacturer was contacted who referred him back to the dealer to have a diagnostics test performed. The vehicle was not further repaired. The failure mileage was 90,000 and the current mileage was 100,000.
The contact owns a 2009 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact started the ignition and heard a loud knocking noise on the outside of the vehicle. The failure began one week after the vehicle was purchased. In addition, the brakes would shake and vibrate when they were engaged. The engine consumed an excessive amount of oil. The air bag sensor also caused the air bag warning light indicator to illuminate. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the engine and air bag sensors were replaced. The engine failure continued to occur after the engine was replaced. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to the dealer fifteen times. The manufacturer was notified of the failures and only offered her a free oil change for one year. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 1,000.

Front driver side and passenger side wheel bearings and abs sensors went bad. I have spoke to other owners of similar vehicles and they also had trouble.
The contact owns a 2001 GMC Sierra c3. When the vehicle approaches a stop, the abs grab and make it harder to stop the vehicle. The contact stated that this failure occurred one year earlier while driving at any speed. The emergency brake also failed, which caused the vehicle to fail inspection. A local mechanic informed him that the wheel sensors possibly needed to be cleaned or replaced. The manufacturer stated that the VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign id number 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic:antilock). The repairs would cost approximately $1,500. The failure mileage was 35,000 and current mileage was 47,000. Updated 06/25/08. Updated 06/25/08.
The contact owns a 2002 GMC Sierra denali. The contact noticed that the abs wheel hub was pulsating, which indicated that the abs hub sensors had engaged at low speeds. The contact was able to stop the vehicle, but he lost all sense of braking control. He drove home and called the dealer, who informed him that the abs sensors were dirty and needed to be cleaned or replaced. No repairs have yet been made. Nhtsa campaign id number 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic:antilock) was related to his year, make, and model vehicle. The failure mileage was 55,000 and current mileage was 56,000. 2000 GMC Sierra pick up truck. Abs sensors are corroded and the truck will not stop properly. It was in for recall 1 and a half years ago at 40,000 miles. Now at 48,500 it is doing the same thing with abs. Dealer will not pay for the repair for the fix. In addition the dealer now wants me to replace rotors that are under recall.
1999 GMC Sierra. Consumer states that when the brakes were applied the pedal did not move causing the vehicle to hit a parked vehicle. Mechanic replaced the abs control valve. The consumer stated he took the vehicle to the dealership so the recall could be performed on Dec 28, 2006, however he experienced a failure 1 month later. The consumer was informed that the front left sensor was damaged which was probably the cause of the control valve failure.
1999 GMC Sierra pickup truck customer states that after getting car fixed due to a recall on brakes the next day the brakes stop working causing a accident* the recall was performed on Dec 28, 2006 and on January 3, 2007 when the consumer applied the brakes, the pedal was extremely hard, the consumer was unable to stop the vehicle and consequently hit a parked vehicle. The next day the consumer took the vehicle to a mechanic who said the anti-lock brake valve had burned out. The mechanic stated there was damage to the front left sensor and wanted to know if anyone had been working on the abs sensors recently. The mechanic stated that someone had pierced inside the sensor and damaged it, which was the probable cause of the control valve failure.
: the contact stated the abs activates at low speeds, below 10 mph. The vehicle was taken to an independent repair shop and the abs sensor was replaced. A year later, the contact received a recall letter for the abs, #05v379000. The vehicle was taken to the dealership and the abs was cleaned.
Regards gm recall on brake sensor corrosion. Dealer (jim causley pontiac-GMC mt. Clemens, mi) claims gm is wrong about repair taking 1 hour. Dealer claims repair takes minimum of 4 hours. Who is lying? is dealer giving 4 hour estimate to discourage repair? is gm not reimbursing dealer enough to encourage dealer to do repair?.
My 2001 GMC Sierra 1500 (VIN 1gtek19t31e136226) was recalled for unwanted abs brake system activation. I paid for the same repair ($363. 20) out of my own pocket last oct. 28, 2004. Recently they started acting up again and the recall notice came out. (campaign #05v379000). I took my truck Nov. 2, 2005 to harbor pontiac Buick GMC, 9911 w. 300 north, michigan city, indiana. They confirmed that the sensors were bad and replaced them. They then told me that the problem still existed and that it would cost me $85 just to put it on the computer to check what the problem may be. They then told me that if it was the abs module, it will cost me $1,111. 99 to replace it. I am a mechanic and feel that if the module is bad, the defective sensors caused it and I should not have to pay for it. My vehicle is still doing the exact same thing it was recalled for. I feel they should have to do whatever it takes to fix it at no cost to me. In addition, when I took it in yesterday for the repairs they only had (1) sensor in stock and refused to let me take the truck home for "liability" reasons. But today they are telling me that I can take it even though it is still doing the same thing it was recalled for. I can't aford to pay what they want to fix it so I am forced to drive it the way it is.
On 01 Nov, I was pulling into a parking spot when my brakes totally failed causing me to crash into a parked car. I was entering the parking spot below 5 mph when the brakes failed. I dropped my truck off at a repair center on 03 Nov and they informed me that both the left front hub bearing was shot and the anti-lock brakes sensor was shot. Both items were replaced.
My 2002 GMC Sierra 4wd p/u with 28,570 miles had "abs brake" failure. I came close to going through my garage door because of this and am glad it didn't happen at a busy intersection!! there is a recall on my vehicle for this problem, however it only applies to the "salt belt" states and wisconsin is not included!! unbelievable!! the dealership (von holzen) in ashland WI. Replaced abs sensors p/n 15112379 ($225) also they had to replace both front brake rotors which could not be refaced as they would have been below specs. The whole bill came to $513. 61!! I can't believe GMC doesn't have a recall for all states on the abs problem before there are abs caused fatalities!! von holzen dealership phone # 8003415440 has the old part.
Both front brake abs sensors on my 1998 GMC Sierra 4 wheel drive half ton pickup truck failed during a 90 day period in 2005. This caused the abs to activate at low speed stops nearly resulting in accidents and requiring the replacement of both front wheel bearing/abs sensor assemblies at the cost of about $800. This vehicle was purchased new in August 1998 and has about 65,000 miles of use. The local gm rep and GMC's customer relations tells me that there is nothing gm will do about it. The local dealer tells me it is a common problem and has been for many years!.

Noticed on August 30, 2005 that the brakes did not work properly. There was a recall for the brakes, but the state of wisconsin was not included, when touching the brake the sensor did not read it and the pedal pushed foot off of the brake. Could come up to a stop sign and could not keep the pedal pushed down. There was no forewarning, and no matter what the road conditions were the vehicle still did this. Contacted the dealer, and they said the consumer had to to pay out of pocket, but they had a lot of complaints on this.
The contact stated while driving vehicle made a jerking motion when stopping or slowing down . Vehicle was taken to the dealership on 8-23-05. The dealership found the hub was defective. Also, the front left side wheel sensor needed to be replaced. The consumer was told his vehicle was not a part of the recall. Updated 01/04/06.
Pulling 5th wheel camper along interstate tried to stop at toll booth. Brakes fine until about 10mph when pedal went to floor and vehicle wasn,t stopping. Trailer brakes stopped truck. Dealer said rust on sensors. Rotors and pads replaced at 48,000 miles due to rotors rotting away. Pads were damaged by rotors.
First showing signs of brakes not working when I was pulling into a parking space and the brakes would not stop the vehicle properly, about a 5 day period before they were getting to the point of not able to stop without it failing. I had all brakes repaired thinking that was the issue. I didn't get into an accident but, it was very close to me rear ending someone at a stop light, had to apply emergency brake to get truck to stop completely. Took to dealer and they put in two front sensors for the abs systems. They state they have had to few they have replaced.
In the summer of 2002 my GMC Sierras pu truck VIN 1gtek14vxxz526539 began to experience brake chater at very low speed. It then began to continue to roll when the brakes were applied. This problem became more pronounced and more pronounced as time went on. I had numerous very close calls with this truck involving buildings, trees and other vehicles. I took it to a local repair shop and they could not find the problem over a two week period. I finally took it to bowser GMC in pleasant hills PA. They repaired the truck by replacing the front hubs and sensors. With this repair and the previous complete brake job including brakes and rotors this episode cost more than $1400. At the time the truck had 36,000 miles on it. On 7/20/05 I began to notice the brake chatter returning. Just a slight chatter coming to a stop at red lights on inclines, then on the level and finally on 7/23/05 I almost crashed into my house as I pulled into the driveway. The same problem had returned, the truck now has 47,000 miles. It appears that my $800 hub replacement was done with the same faulty hub assembly. The same problem has returned only in less time. This is not the only problem I have had with the brakes on this truck, I just recently at 46,000 miles had to have the rear rotors and pads replaced due to rusted brake parts. So over the course of 5 years I have replaced 6 brake rotors, 6 sets of pads, two hubs and two sensor assemblies. I have had numerous close calls with this truck coming within inches of crashing into buildings and other cars. At times I have had to throw the vehicle into park to stop from hitting something. I have no other means of transportation and I am disgusted that nothing has been done to rectify this problem since I first reported it in 2002. The NHTSA action number for this truck is pe05020.
Brake failure when applying brakes at slow speed over irregular( bumpy) surface. The abs activates, the brake pedal goes almost to the floor and the vehicle does not stop within a safe distance. The vehicle was returned to the dealer and they cleaned the mounting surface for the abs sensors. This was after two failures. The dealer wanted to charge me until I explained this is a design safety flaw and they agreed to collect from general motors. The brakes have failed in this same manner two (2) more times exactly as described above.
1998 GMC Sierra experiencing problems with the front abs sensors. Red grease was inside of the sensor area. The brakes would pulsate just below 15 mph. The vehicle would shake and pull to the left each time the brakes were applied below 15 mph. The brake pedal would bounce up and down creating an uneasy feeling to everyone in the vehicle. The abs would activate prematurely. The consumer felt that he should not be charged for a faulty brake system.
Dt:the consumer staed there is a problem with braking at low speeds. . The service dealer replaced the abs sensors due to corrosion. This did remedy the problem with the abs.
Consumer stated when driving slow the abs kicked in. It caused the consumer to have no brakes. The consumer could hear the abs kick in and no had lights come on. The consumer took the vehicle to the shop. The dealer informed the consumer the sensor had failed and she should contact gm.
I have a 1998 GMC Sierra pick-up truck. I have experienced ongoing anti lock brake sensor issues since last spring. They engage at low speed and make it hard to stop if you are not prepared for the failure at low speed. The dealer I took the vehicle to (capitol Cadillac-lansing mich. ) said they "couldn't recreate the problem". This was a ridiculous statement because it "recreated" itself twice as I was leaving the dealership parking lot. They were just not interested in dealing with it. There is an active recall for this problem. Why does it not include my truck?? I don't see why I should have to spend hundreds of dollars to have this fixed if gm is taking care of other owners with the same problem. I am very disappointed.
Vehicle had brake antilock problems when first purchased. Loud sound when attempting to stop and pedal becomes stiff resulting in slow/no stopping. Dealer replaced wheel sensor. Within a few months the problem is happening again. Same noise same results. Dealer states sensor needs to be replaced. This would seem to be something that would last much longer than a few months (less than a year!) it has the strong potential to cause serious harm/accidents as this happens with no warning.
2002 GMC Sierra anti lock brakes engaged when consumer attempted to stop. On another occasion the anti lock brakes would not allow the vehicle to stop. The service department informed the consumer that the vehicles hub on the drivers side needed replaced. There was no light indication. Rust would get under the sensors and lift them.
