1 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2001 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 12/20/2015

05068a product safety recall front wheel speed sensor corrosion. My vehicle was serviced for this recall in 2006 which involved removing and cleaning the abs sensor and reinstalling it. No redesign was created to improve this flawed design. I'm having the same failures described and covered in this recall. While moving at slow speeds in dry conditions abs kicks in and increases my stopping distance. I hit a parked car in a parking lot due to this defect. My vehicle was in motion at <5mph on dry pavement when the breaks went into 'abs mode' and hit a stationary parked car. Luckily no one was hurt. When I contacted GMC I was told that this would not be covered under the recall because it was already serviced for this recall in 2006 and that the issue was therefore closed. In my case the original recall was not adequate and my car breaks still failed even though serviced in 2006. I hope this doesn't start to occur with all of the vehicles that were serviced ~10 years ago which is why I'm filing this complaint. . Read more...

2 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2001 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 01/01/2015

Tl- the contact owns a 2001 GMC Sierra. The contact stated that when coming to a stop the abs system will fail and the vehicle will pull to the right. The contact is a mechanic and was able to determine the cause of the failure was a wheel speed sensor. The contact's VIN was not affected by NHTSA campaign number: 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic), the contact should have been affect by this regional recall because he had always lived in indiana. The manufacturer was not made aware of the problem. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 105,000. Az.

3 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2002 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 12/06/2013

The accident happened in a parking lot. As I was turning at the end of row of parked vehicles ,a pick-up truck was backing out of a parking place. I applied the brakes but there was no response only a ratcheting noise coming from the front end of my pick-up. I put the truck in neutral but it continued to go forward until my truck ran into the other one. This happened at a very low speed but there was still quite a bit of damage to the trucks. It almost felt like the truck was being pulled forward on its own. I got my truck in to a mechanic and he replaced the left front wheel speed sensor. This accident was small but I could just as easily run into someone in a wheelchair or someone that could not get out of the way. I found out later that the truck was recalled before I owned it (at 43000 miles) for the same problem. The truck now has 103000 miles on it and it appears that the original problem has not been solved.

6 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2002 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 08/01/2010

Everytime the brakes are applied and the vehicle slows down to under 10 mph, the vehicles abs system kicks on. I did some research and found that this has been recalled on many GMC models but not the Sierra denali I have. I have also found that many others with Sierra denalis have had the same issue and it greatly increases stopping distance. Further research into the issue has led me to believe this could be caused by a faulty speed sensor due to the abs kicking in while stopping at low speed.

7 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2004 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 07/05/2010

I experience brake pedal pulsation (low speed abs activation) when rolling to a stop. My GMC onstar report says there is nothing wrong with my abs braking system yet I have this problem. The problem seems to be rusted and/or froze up wheel speed sensors as verified by two different mechanics. I understand they were recalls by GMC of other trucks experiencing this same problem. I really hate to pay $750 for new front wheel bearing assemblies. I want my truck recalled for this problem. There is a GMC technical bulletin 03-05-25-007d. I am not sure the abs will function properly when really needed??.

10 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2000 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 10/18/2009

On or about 18 oct 2009 as I was turning into my driveway as I applied the brakes on my 2000 gme 1/2 ton truck it failed to stop as normal. I almost hit my travel trailer. The brakes made an unusual noise that sounded as if it came from around the brake booster. I had it replaced, this did not eliminate the problem. This vehicle was not driven again until around 15 Jan 2010 this braking problem occurred again. After taking the vehicle to a Chevrolet dealer and talking with a service mgr. With some 33 years experience,he recognized the problem. He explained that the anti-lock brake system was activating resulting in increased stopping distances during low speed brake applications. He removed the wheel speed sensors and cleaned the wheel speed sensors mounting surface and applied a rust inhibitor and reinstalled the wheel sensors at a cost to me of $252. 00 I believe GMC should bear this cost as there is a recall on this problem. Recall id# 43621 dated Aug. 29. 2005 this recall did not cover va. ,but the abs brake problem does not know that it is in va. . GMC should recall all vehicles with this abs system regardless which state the vehicle is in.

11 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2001 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 05/01/2009

Anti lock braking kicks in when it should not. We have found where vehicles sold in certain states where recalled for this. Pa is one of those states but our truck was not sold in PA until it was a year old. Gm says the speed sensor is not covered due to the VIN number. Then they told me it was not covered due to mileage. But my point is if I had been notified of the recall seven years ago I would not be faced with an $1100. 00 repair now.

12 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2003 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 11/17/2008

The contact owns a 2003 GMC Sierra. While driving less than 10 mph in a busy parking lot, the contact depressed the brake pedal before completing a left turn and felt the brakes shaking. This incident occurred after repairs indicated in recall # 05v379000 regarding service brakes, hydraulic:antilock were performed at the dealership. The absence of braking action at low speed happened due to malfunctioning of the speed sensors. The manufacturer was contacted and the outcome was a referral to customer service where a representative was supposed to be called back in 48 hours however no return call was received. The contact expressed dissatisfaction with the recall performed in the vehicle because the dealership indicated in the job order inspection or replacement of the affected sensors but no replacement were performed.

19 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2002 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 02/08/2006

The brakes on my GMC Sierra were recalled because they can fail between 3 and 10 miles an hour. I took the truck in to be fix, however, I am still having trouble with the brakes- (I believe it is with the front wheel speed sensor -this is how it was listed on the recall paper). They seem to fail more under damp/moist/slippery conditions. When I called the dealership to tell them that the truck was still having problems after they had worked on the brakes their response was "deal with it". I am sorry but I cannot just deal with brakes that you cannot trust. What kind of help can I get with this. They have worked on the brakes four times. . . . And they are still not good. Yesterday they took it and drove it. . . . It was a nice and not bad conditions and they brought it back and said there was not a problem. I am sorry but there is a problem! they are very temperamental brakes!.

20 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2001 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 01/27/2006

Brakes working poorly at slow speeds and abs engaging on dry pavement at stop signs. Replaced all pads and rotors, still little change in braking. Took vehicle to precision auto in mayville WI, to have them check brakes. Technician keith pastorius recommended replacing abs sensors and hub assy's on both sides as this is a common problem on these trucks. Charged $60. 00 for scan tool diagnostics. (invoice#7964) I did research on the web and found recall 05v379000 matching same symptoms I have. I took vehicle to holiday auto, fon du lac WI they said it was definitely the sensors corroded, but my VIN number was not included yet in the recall. They found "document 1748482-wheel speed sensors need to be cleaned. " they tried to remove sensors, and they broke. Charged me $200. 00 and said if the recall includes my vehicle in the next few months, I could be reimbursed. (invoice#257356) Jan 27 2006. I feel this repair should be covered as a warranty recall (as did the service advisor at the dealer) because symptoms and defective parts are synonymous with other recall vehicles of the same year, and when the dealer drove the vehicle in they almost went through the service bay door from poor braking. Thank you in advance for any investigating you do on my issue. I will be glad to help with any other information if necessary.

21 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 1998 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 01/23/2006

My wife and I own a 1998 GMC k1500 4x4 pickup truck. This vehicles suffers from the stopping problem due to fouling of the speed sensors in the wheel hubs that was the subject of a recall for similar 1999-2002 vehicles. The NHTSA has encouraged gm/GMC to recall similar 1999-2002 vehicles. The 1998 vehicles with the same brake system design was not included in the recall - you guys missed the boat. Why didn't you suggest that gm/GMC recall all vehicles regardless of year with the same problem?.

Consumer' lived in maryland and his was not listed for the recall he almost had an accident last week because of this problem with the wheel speed sensor. He almost ran into trailer because he had the brakes on, and at a certain speed, released them. He had to swerve to keep from hitting the trailer. When he let off of the brake pedal and pressed the brakes again it stopped the vehicle. The estimated speed at the time of this incident was under 10 mph. There where no injuries.

29 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2001 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 08/17/2005

The breaks on my 2001 GMC 1500 Sierra began kicking back during stops on dry clean pavement near the end of the stop. This caused me on numerous occasions to nearly hit cars in front of me at stop signs and in parking lots. I also use this vehicle for work around my property and have nearly run into trees and equipment near my vehicle. I took the vehicle to a local dealer, hawkins Chevrolet Oldsmobile, inc. And was told the abs speed sensor was corroded and not working properly. They replaced the abs sensors on the two front wheels on 8/17/05 under invoice ctcs85615. I was especially concerned with this problem as my other vehicle, a 2002 Chevrolet suburban began to have this same problem at the same time. I had two vehicles which were unsafe to drive at the same time. I filed a complaint with NHTSA about the suburban (odi number 10132681) on 8/12/05 and also contacted gm customer service. I was denied any help with my problem and was given a file number 1-355599627 and therefore did not contact customer service about my Sierra truck. I conducted some internet research and found that these model type vehicles in the years 1999 to 2002 were recalled in canada for this same problem. I also spoke to my sister's family about their 1999 GMC Sierra and were told that they too have replaced these sensors, but did not file a complaint with NHTSA or gm.

31 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2001 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 08/13/2005

My 2001 gm Sierra truck has a problem with the anti-lock brake system. When stopping at low speeds the anti-lock brakes activate and the truck will not stop. My problem seems to be, exactly as reported in many news sources, with the wheel speed sensors. (ref: detnews. Com may 27, 2005 by jeff plungis).

32 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2000 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 08/01/2005

Poor braking performance, complete deterioration of braking surface of rotors front and rear leading to premature failure of braking system. Replacement of all four rotors and pad sets front and rear. Also unwanted antilock activation at low speeds due to sensor or abs component failure or mis-programmed abs module not diagnosed at this time.

33 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 1999 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 07/26/2005

Abs activated on dry road while stopping on a slight grade . This resulted in a loss of brakes as if a brake line failed. I shot forward about three feet then all four wheels locked up. After the accident the abs light came on so when I got home I had my mechanic check the codes. The abs control unit was bad but gave no indication until after the accident. The mechanic told me that this wasn't the first time he had someone with a99 - 02 gm truck in his shop with this same problem . For me this failure resulted in $5000. 00 damage to my truck as well as damage to the vehicle in front of me (which luckily we also own). I just got a recall notice today almost three months after the accident for the abs speed sensor that causes this same type of malfunction but what about the control unit on the frame rail ? in this case it also failed and costs almost $1000. 00 just for the part alone before it is replaced. That's over $6000. 00 by the time every thing is fixed.

34 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2001 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 07/07/2005

My abs system pumps the brakes as I slow to a stop. This often happens as I approach a stop sign. I press the brake pedal to stop, the truck slows, and just before it stops, the abs pump pumps once or twice. I can hear the pump and feel it in the pedal. I own a 2001 GMC Sierra 1500, 4wd, extended cab. I removed the 2 front wheel sensors, as well as the vehicle speed sensor, cleaned them and replaced them. I also tested each sensor to verify that it showed the proper resistance value. None of this fixed the problem.

35 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 1999 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 05/18/2005

I was pulling into my driveway, applied the brakes to my 1999 GMC Sierra 4x4 pickup truck, VIN no. 1gtek19v4xe552750, and I could not stop and hit the rear end of my girlfriend's 2001 chevy blazer. I was advised to contact gm of the accident as there is a recall in canada (product safety bulletin [psb]- front wheel speed sensor corrosion #04094 dated January 25, 2005) for brake failure. Gm representatives sent a fact finder to determine if the problem was the wheel sensor. The body damage repair estimate to my truck is $2,902. 86 and $1,907. 79 to the blazer. The estimates were faxed to gm and we were informed that the report indicated there was a problem but, since the damages were over $1,000. 00 the case had to be referred to risk management. Risk management stated the fact finders report did not indicate a problem which was contrary to what I was told previously. I requested a copy of the report and was denied as it is considered proprietary information. I informed risk management that a TSB had been issued which they claimed they were unaware of. Risk management offered to pay 50% of the damages. I called the original contact person at gm and was told the report indicated that there was not a current diagnostic problem however, the history code shows that the left front wheel speed sensor was missing - dropped out of circuit - indicating that there has been past problems with the wheel sensor. Since the accident I borrowed my mother's car and was asked to return it so, I drove my truck through a 40 mph zone, my hood flew open breaking the hinges. I have not had my truck or my girlfriend's blazer fixed as I am uncertain what to do. I feel it is wrong to request my insurance company to pay for damages that are clearly the fault of the manufacturer. In addition, if this type of incident occurs in a crowded area someone could get seriously hurt or killed. I ask for your assistance in resolving this issue for the safety of everyone. Thank you.
