GMC Sierra owners have reported 50 problems related to brake antilock wheel speed sensor (under the service brakes category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.

36 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2000 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 01/31/2005

With increasing frequency, I have experienced repeated failures of the abs brake system at low speeds. This has caused extended stopping distances and, on at least three occasions, near collisions. Dealer quickly identified the recommended repair as replacement of the rf wheel bearing assembly, which includes the abs speed sensor. Disturbingly, the dealer indicated that this problem is not uncommon, and that no recall currently exists. Dealer further indicated that future failures (either of the same bearing assembly or the other bearing assembly) are possible.

37 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2000 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 12/06/2004

While coming to a slow stop(-10mph and dry) the antilock brakes started to operate causing a failure for an assured distance . Wheel speed sensors to be cause ,replaced at dealership. Happened again 8 months later wheel speed sensors replced again. Should be looked into failure to stop causes accidents not tailgate cables.

38 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2000 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 11/06/2004

When coming to a normal stop and speed is around 5 mph the abs system makes a loud noise, the brake pedal becomes stiff and the vehicle does not stop. This happened 2 years ago (the first time - approximately 42,000 miles) and the dealer replaced the front wheel speed sensors. Now the same problem is occurring. The dealer states that the wheel speed sensors need to be replaced again and note that there were no codes in the computer. The dealer was able to reproduce the problem. The abs warning light does not come on. I contacted gm's customer assistance and was told that since the vehicle is out of warranty and the parts are out of warranty, they cannot help with the repair. My point is after the parts are replaced, this can happen again with no warning. The first time this happened, I was in rush hour traffic and had to veer off to the shoulder and hit the emergency brake. This time, I was exiting my driveway and was unable to stop and rolled into the road. Gm claims that this is not a "documented" issue, even after admitting there is a TSB for this repair. The repair is insufficient in my opinion. I does not prevent brake loss from occurring in the future without warning. After calling gm customer assistance back and complaining, they said to wait 2 to 3 days to see if they will cover the repair cost (wheel speed sensors). They avoid answering how this will be resolved so that it will not happen again.

39 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2002 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 10/11/2004

2002 Sierra rear brakes rusted. Front brake system had to have the rotors resurfaced due to rust and the speed sensors were corroded, calipers also rusted.

40 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2002 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 10/06/2004

This complaint is to support investigation pe05020 1 - events leading to failure: my truck has been driven in NY state since it was purchased in late 2001. It has been properly maintained and serviced. 2 - failure and its consequences: after 40,000 miles, every time I came to a stop the anti-lock brakes would kick in (under 10 mph in completely dry conditions). This made the vehicle extremely difficult if not impossible to stop. I almost became involved in an accident on 3 or 4 separate occasions until I pulled the fuse for the abs system. Pulling the fuse disables the system so I'm now driving without anti-lock brakes. Certainly better than the alternative. 3 - corrective measures and availability of parts I brought the vehicle in for service to patrick GMC in rochester, NY. Paid $85. 73 to have it diagnosed. They indicated both front speed sensors were bad and both hub assemblies would need to be replaced at a cost of $432 per side plus tax. The sensor itself is not available - it must be purchased with an entire hub assembly. I did not have the work done and continue to drive the vehicle with the abs fuse pulled. The vehicle is unsafe to drive in any other condition (except if the hubs were replaced). The defective parts are still on my truck.

41 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2000 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 08/07/2004

Abs malfunctioning abs would kick on due to a bad vehicle speed sensor causing a lengthing of stopping distance which could lead to accidents. As a temporay fix I pulled the fuse for the abs controller to eliminate the leghtened stopping problem.

42 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 1999 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 07/22/2004

(1) recall on wheel speed sensor causing increased stopping distances. (2) due to wheel speed sensor causing unwanted abs activation, the abs module turned defective. As a result, the module needed replacing due to over activation. A low speed crash occurred due to not being able to stop. (3) during the recall campaign, the manufacturer refused to relate the crash or the faulty abs module to the wheel speed sensor. They estimated repairs in the thousands of dollar range. They refused to fix the malfunction. I do not have abs on my vehicle at this time.

43 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2000 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 07/14/2004

Anti-lock brakes kicking in at low speeds (under 10 mph) when coming to a stop causing unexpected elongated stopping distances. Had to pull fuse to disable the abs module in order to brake normally (but w/o abs). Per GMC diagnostic, speed sensors not putting out correct reading at low speeds. GMC dealer replaced both front and bearing & hub assemblies. Truck out of warranty but dealer picked up half the cost, and I paid $352. 17. Filed complaint with gm - problem file # 1-236485201.

44 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2000 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 06/16/2004

Abs light went on during normal operation. Abs pump needed to be replaced. Within 3 months, abs were engaging at very low speeds during stopping, causing many near-accidents. Abs module replaced by dealer. Problem persisted, dealer replaced wheel speed sensor.

45 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2000 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 05/22/2004

The abs sensor in brake system has became a problem. It has been replaced once but now it is a problem again. Under 5 mph there is a total loss of the brakes. Cosnumer feels this is a safety related defect. Has been to dealer for repair for the first inciden. T was paid for out of pocket by consumer, and now consumer must pay for this 2nd repair again. Did contact gm manufacturer and suggested to take to a dealer for repair. The dealer noted this is an issue with abs wheel speed sensor and it needed replaced.

46 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 1997 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 08/15/2003

Wheel speed sensors failed, causing unsafe braking on uneven pavement. Numerous trips to the dealer were required before the cause of the noise/unsafe braking was discovered. Parts were replaced at a cost in excess of $800. 00. Now, less than two years later, the same symptoms have returned.

47 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2001 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 07/01/2003

Consumer has been having trouble with abs sensors. First incident was over a year ago. At slow braking at a speed of 5 mph or less the abs sensors activated, and this interefered with the braking itself. Was unable to stop. Had truck serviced in December 2003 for this problem. Dealer did scan test, removed wheel speed sensor, and removed rust and debris from it as well. Currently, having the same problem . Called GMC and dealer stated the consumer would be responsible for this repair until there was a recall. This problem was worse when trying to park truck. There was no braking power literally.

48 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 1998 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 04/15/2003

The anti-lock brake system will activate prematurely on dry pavement when slowing down from 10 mph-zero. It will do this ninety-nine out of hundreds times. Had to increase the stopping distance tremendously in order to keep it from hitting another vehicle. Noticed this on April 15, 2003. The abs light does came on the dashboard. Took vehicle to the dealer, the service technician determined that it was the front wheel speed sensor. This problem arose several times with the dealers. The brake pedal was soft and it had something to do with abs system.

49 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2001 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 08/02/2002

Brakes will go out while driving, and the pedal will go to the floor before the vehicle even starts to slow down. Contacted the dealer, and the dealer is not willing to do anything. The consumer states that the ride control will not go on; there is an internal short-replaced the ride control, the consumer states that the abs light stays on-faulty speed sensors, and right front seat belt is not retracting.

50 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 1997 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 01/01/2001

The contact owns a 1997 GMC Sierra k1500 pickup. The consumer was experiencing the same type of problem with the abs brakes as stated in NHTSA recall campaign 05v379000. The consumer stated that she replaced the wheel speed sensor as well as the wheel bearing several times, both where replaced in less than a year each time. The gm manufacturer was contacted and they said that the consumer vehicle was not covered under the recall at this time and I she would be receiving a recall letter. The contact did not know other people who experienced this problem as well. The contact stated has been having the abs brakes for about four years. The abs has been replaced five times. Some of these replacements have been done under warranty because they were within a year from the last replacement.
