GMC Sierra 1500 owners have reported 524 problems related to equipment (under the equipment category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of GMC Sierra 1500 based on all problems reported for the Sierra 1500.
The vehicle camera camera system is sometimes not available at startup and will not reset until the vehicle is allowed to sit for several hours. This prevents the backup camera, forward camera and side mirror cameras from providing an in-dash video of vehicle surroundings, which is especially critical for reversing direction or backing-up. Typically the camera will reset after sitting from a period of time. I have reported it to the dealer, but their position has been that since camera has always been working when I bring the truck in for service, is that there is really nothing they can do to correct the intermittent issue.

I remote started my truck. I got in about 5 minutes later. When I shut the door the rear window, passenger side of the power sliding window blew out. Gm says my VIN is not affected by the recall but my truck shows that it should have been part of the recall or customer satisfaction program. N192265660 rear window defroster thermal events.

I was driving down the road the front piece of the grill flew off the truck and hit my windshield, then flew into oncoming traffic.
Driving down the road, the radio volume will randomly rapidly increase to full volume. There is no way to turn the volume down. This is very startlingly and can lead to an accident due to the driver panicking and trying to turn off the radio or turn the volume down. It has happened approximately 5 times since I have owned the vehicle. Thie first time was when the vehicle was only a few months old. It happens so infrequently that it cannot be reproduced. It has not been confirmed nor inspected by a dealer. There is no warning as to when it might happen, nor any similar circumstances when it happens. The only solution I have found is to stop, turn off the vehicle and open the door for a minute or two, which is difficult to do in traffic.
The front chrome grille deflector came off 9-10 months after the dealership inspected it.
My 2020 GMC sierra has had poor gas mileage problems I have taken it to gm a few times with them not able to dind anything wrong through diagnostic. A couple years later my horrible gas mileage came back and service ecs and stabilitrack message came back on and disappeared. I spoke to another shop and they advised me its the dfm lifter issues that everyone has been talking about. So the shop performed the well know fix and has fix the issue. A month after now the valve body gave me a p2817 code showing that the solenoid is stuck in the off and was also advised that this is a know issue being addressed. Currently the truck is in the shop. When is enough enough with all the issues across the nation whwn is gm going to make it right.

Transmission 10l80 stuck solenoid truck has hesitation delayed shifting. And will not shift after certain gears.
Tailgate is randomly dropping while driving without any tailgate drop buttons being pushed. It’s is starting to occur more frequently.
Onstar quite working, light nothing. Called onstar, told me I need to take to the dealer.
Tailgate opened on its own while driving, creating a safety hazard where items inside could have fallen out. The tailgate was secured prior to driving.
The grille deflector suddenly detached from the truck and flew off into traffic. It narrowly missed the vehicle behind me and could have caused a serious accident or injury. There was no prior warning or impact that would explain the failure.
Experience water leaking 3rd brake light and rear window. Leaking in both areas. Also concerned about mold that could be caused by this.

The onstar system completely shut down. The module stopped working while driving and now there is no communication to the vehicle.
Safety recall n242454440 momentary rear wheel lock-up was issued for 2020 to 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 but mine is not included. I drive a 2020 GMC Sierra 1500. It is experiencing harsh shifting and now there is a feeling in the rear wheels like they are trying to get stuck or hang up. Why is my truck not included?.
While driving in bumper-to-bumper traffic, my vehicle suddenly lost all engine power, the accelerator became unresponsive and the dash indicated "press start". There were no warning lights, no messages, and no prior symptoms before the failure occurred. I was in an active traffic lane when this happened, which immediately placed me and others at risk of being rear-ended. After several seconds, and pressing the start button, the vehicle regained power. But the odometer was indicating I was going 30+ mph when I was going less than 10 mph, so I pulled over to the side of the road. The vehicle is also was having issues with the lane keeping assistance was unavailable. This is is a new vehicle purchase directly from the dealer in August 2025, with approximately 4,500 miles at the time of the incident that occurred on, 11/18. The problem has not been reproduced by the dealership, and no diagnostic trouble codes were found. The vehicle has been at the dealer for inspection since 11/20, but I was informed that the issue would need to happen again before they could diagnose it. This type of sudden power loss while driving is a serious safety concern, especially because it occurred without warning and could happen again unpredictably. At this time, the cause it unknown, but the component or system responsible for the power loss should be inspected. The failure appears to be intermittent and without warning.

Onstar module is out. No wifi, speed reporting or maps access.
On October 23rd at approximately 0900-0915 hours I arrived at a friends house located at [xxx] . As I normally do, I pulled up into the driveway which has a pretty significant incline. I shifted the column shifter into park, and turned off the vehicle via the push button ignition switch. The parking brake/hill brake system automatically engaged as per normal operation. I exited the vehicle and before I could shut the door, the vehicle began to roll backwards. The driver's side door hit me in the right shoulder which pushed me to my left and caused me to roll my left ankle due to the down slope of the driver way. While I felt immense pain in my right ankle, I was able to jump back into the truck and slam on the brakes, causing both rear wheels to lock up and skid in the driveway. I then turned back on the vehicle, noting that the transmission position was still in park, and the parking brake/hill brake was still engaged. I had to disengage the push button parking brake/hill-brake, shift the vehicle from park into drive to move back up the driveway. This time I ensured that the vehicle did not move after following the exact same steps. My truck under went an approximately 30 minute software "upgrade" approximately 2. 5 weeks ago. I believe there was an issue where the park sensor did not fully engage, leading the vehicle to believe it was still in an operational gear, however it does not explain how it was able to not only over-ride the parking/hill-brake itself, as well as allow me to shut the vehicle off and exit the vehicle. This safety hazard has caused me an injury that has already caused me to miss 48 hours of work (I am a federal firefighter) and will require more missed time should surgery be required. There were no warning lamps, the backup camera was not engaged, the only audible sound was the beep that the vehicle makes when engaging the parking brake automatically. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

I was traveling home from work and lost all power to the vehicle while driving. No warning lights, check engine lights came on. I was able to cross traffic and park it in a business place. I had it towed to a chevy dealership for diagnostic. They said that the timing chain came off and I would need a new engine. I had it towed to a auto mechanic shop for a second opinion and they gave the same result. The vehicle is only 4 years old with 92,000 miles on it. When I lost all power to the vehicle, I did not hear any strange noises.

I purchased a 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 denali (VIN: 3gtu9fel5mg467929) from j. C. Lewis Ford in pooler, georgia. The dealership did not disclose an active federal safety recall (NHTSA campaign number: 24v-xxx / gm n252494000) related to engine connecting rod and crankshaft defects that can result in sudden engine failure and loss of propulsion. The blue certified delivery document they had me sign includes a section requiring disclosure of any open recalls, but they left the recall section blank and checked that all recalls were explained to me. No disclosure of any recall occurred during the sale. The vehicle developed engine problems within days and is currently in GMC service. The nondisclosure put me at risk of driving a vehicle with a known safety defect. I am reporting this as a dealer nondisclosure of a federal safety recall.
I saw the report regarding models of Chevrolet trucks not receiving owners manuals from factory. I purchased a 2026 GMC at4 in early October 2025. It didn't come with a manual either. I emailed my sales person at ewing GMC in plano, texas informing him that it was missing the manual and I was told that gm had decided to only include physical manuals with denali grade trucks. This didn't make any sense whatsoever. I would prefer to have a physical manual available to reference in the event of vehicle issues.
Trailer brake control is junk, it is a known problem! while driving the control shut of the brakes of the trailer. Had a fully loaded trailer 14,000 pounds with no trailer brakes, ended up going through red light, because the trucks brakes where not enough to stop trailer!.
Recently, I just purchased my vehicle from wally edgar chervolet with no open recalls on the vehicle. As of September 29th, 2025 for my very first oil change on the vehicle I was made aware for 4 open recalls which was told to me at the time of purchase. The dealership closed the all recalls without actually checking my make the vehicle was safe to drive. The recall numbers are: n252510321, n222362040, n212356230, n222357620.
I received a new engine. Went in 8/15 - 9/10. Truck was dead on 9/22 when state farm sent out a guy to replace the windshield that came back broken from the dealership. I had put in a new battery on 4/17, before I even knew about the recall. I got the battery out and replaced under warranty from autozone. Before we connected the 2nd new battery, my friend checked the oil. . . Just for fun. There's barely any oil on the dipstick. Service guy told me I'm checking the oil wrong, that it needs to be running for a while, so that's why it's reading low. Okay!!!! lol. 7 days later, truck was dead again. Last week, 10/21, I'm told by gm customer support to not have it towed in yet until I hear back from a senior advisor, after telling her my long winded story. She said it would be within 48 hours. 72 hours passed and nothing. Supposedly I'm receiving a call at 12:51pm today, yes that's correct, that's literally what they told me when I called in yesterday. I'm having the truck towed in today, 10/29. I continue to be jerked around, ignored, lied to from all angles of gm. My truck has been inoperable and/or unsafe to drive for over 6 months now, costing me all of my income from my 2 jobs that require my truck. Gm needs to be held accountable.
In the past few months this truck has been worked on twice. First was the valve body and now it is the coolant control valve. These things have caused my truck to completely slow down or shut down without warning.
Ac not working properly. Ac blows air to defrost vents foging front windshield and side windows causing bad visibility.
I was driving at highway speeds probably doing 55 and another vehicle pulled out in front of me forcing me to slow down rapidly. That’s when my wheels locked up and my vehicles wheels locked up in the middle of the highway. Screeching tires, almost like the vehicle went into park for a second. After about two seconds, I was able to continue driving a highway speed no check engine lights no error codes. It felt like I just hit something nearly gave me a heart attack. My family was in the car. It felt like we all almost died. It was terrifying. This transmission issue recall situation has happened to me more times than I can count. Now it’s almost a guarantee that if you have to shift too hard too fast it locks up the differential and it is terrifying. Every time.
The onstar system and wifi connectivity stopped working over a week ago. The vehicle is less than two-years old, but it had three recalls which we took it in for this past week. We were told by the GMC dealership that one of the recalls would correct the problem with the onstar and wifi connectivity. However, it did not and now we are being told that the onstar module needs to be replaced, and the dealer says it isn't under warranty. GMC has tied the warranty of the onstar module to the miles instead of the time in-service. Many other customers are experiencing the same issue. Gm markets onstar as one of their safety features and as such repairs should be covered by the manufacturer.
The front chrome grill indicated in the recall came off while my wife and I were driving at 70 miles per hour. A big rig was passing in the on coming lane at the time. The part came off striking our front windshield almost causing a wreck and causes emotional trauma. It was a very scary experience. Our local dealer supposedly ordered the part two months or more ago from gm. They told us two days after the failure the part was still not available. I called gm who stayed the part was shipped well over a month and a half ago. Someone isn’t telling the truth. This incident should never have happened to us since it was a known safety recall. It should have been replaced.
I was sitting outside , and then all of a sudden my tailgate on my truck opened upped. And I heard there’s a recall on the latch but apparently it’s not on my truck when I looked it up on google. It does say some 1500s have the problem. I am very worried that it’s gonna open up in a parking lot on a car or a concrete bumper. Can you please look into this? my truck is going in for service next month and I would like to get it fixed with no charge of course because of the recall. Please call me if you have any questions. Onstar module in-operable, bought the vehicle expecting the system to work as it is another safety feature in case of an accident. Technical support will not continue to respond when contacted. Will not assist with any technical support to diagnose issue.
I am experiencing a recurring issue with my 2021 GMC sierra where the dashboard displays a “shift to park” warning even though the vehicle is already in park. This typically occurs when I attempt to shut off the vehicle. The doors unlock as expected, confirming the truck is in park, but the warning prevents me from turning off the ignition immediately. After a few seconds, the warning usually disappears, allowing me to shut off the truck. This issue is more frequent in cold weather, suggesting a temperature-sensitive electrical or mechanical fault. Based on research and community reports, this appears to be a known issue across multiple gm vehicles, often linked to a faulty micro switch or wiring harness in the shifter assembly. I am concerned about the safety implications, especially if the vehicle fails to shut off properly or if the issue worsens over time. Gm has not issued a recall for this problem, and I believe it warrants further investigation due to its widespread nature and potential risk.
I heard a ticking noise coming from the engine compartment. I took it to the dealership that I purchased the truck from and that have been using consistently for service. I was told that the noise was coming from a lifter on the driver's side of the engine and, on further investigation, it was determined that the camshaft had been damaged. I was told that it could seize up as I was driving and that my safety and those with and around me would be at risk. At 85,000 miles, the engine had failed and would have to be replaced. There was no prior warning or no check engine light and the vehicle has been in for oil changes and all maintenance at the dealership. The new engine cost me $15000 including diagnosis and towing.
Noticed the bed of my truck was touching the cab when looking under truck the frame is total structural failure rusted all the way threw on the driver side and beyond.

1. While driving slow or making a right hand turn the vehicle turns itself off 2. Periodically the car does not start/no power and does not respond to keyless car lock 3. Periodically the dashboard panel lights will not turn off, flash or some will go off but not all all of the above have been a twice repaired GMC recall 17276 and has been occurring since 2020.
