I've experienced 2 power steering failures in the last 6 months. First, the eps failed (which was recalled for many of the same model--but not mine) which I replaced. Now, power steering failed again, this time the steering gear per the dealership. This is a safety hazard! with the most recent failure, if your hands are not grasping the steering wheel firmly, the car will veer sharply to either the right or left. And steering this beast with no power steering is nearly impossible. Many drivers would not be able to overpower the dead electric steering system. The first warning came as loud screeching sounds from the steering at low speed. It felt as though the power steering motor was intermittent, and "jolting" the steering wheel. The screeching stopped at speed, but the jittering/jolting of the electric system continued. This is a serious malfunction, especially with so few miles on the vehicle.
Driving approximately 40 mph entering a turn, the power steering failed, causing the vehicle to go off road, and damage the lower front portion of the bumper (minor). My wife is uncomfortable driving the vehicle, even we we have it repaired. There was no warning, until after the failure, when the on board diagnostic system, stated "service power steering".

I live in san francisco and was driving down my street. I live on a steep hill and my brakes and power steering failed. I had my truck towed to the nearest repair shop and found that there is a known defect in the gasket between the power steering and the brake system. It fails. GMC knows this. I have had this gasket replaced three times in 5 years and it has failed again. What can I do?.

Making 3-point turn on dirt road, power steering failed. Upon inspection at repair shop, found that shaft on power steering pump had fractured. Required replacement of power steering pump. This corresponds to NHTSA campaign id number 05v005000 and NHTSA action number ea04012, although GMC has told me that my VIN is not included. It should be.

Upon completing a 400 mile vacation, I pulled into my driveway at home, while pulling a large camper, and the power steering failed, good thing I was not on the highway when this happened. I had the vehicle towed to the nearest gm. Dealer and they ended up replacing the power steering pump. The pump shaft sheared in two.
