1 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2008 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 01/15/2020

Intermittent power steering loss, low speeds. The steering rack was recently replaced. I see online that there is an electric panel that might cause this. Will bring back to local shop tomorrow. Not sure how that is tested vs pump/line or the new rack defective.

8 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2000 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 07/02/2006

I have a 2000 GMC Yukon (non-xl). I was turning around in a parking lot and heard a crunch in the front engine compartment of the vehicle. When I went to straighten out and continued onto the street, the power steering was gone. I had to strong arm it home. I did some research on recalls and found that the 2000 GMC Yukon xl had in fact been recalled for the exact symptoms that my vehicle had (non xl). I called GMC the next day and explained the situation. I asked them if the same recalled power steering parts are used for the standard and the xl Yukon. The GMC representative would not say yes or no, just not necessarily is all he would say. I told them regardless that they should do a recall on the standard Yukon due to the fact that ours did the same exact thing as the Yukon xl has been recalled for and that this was a life or death type failure in the right circumstances (ie; driving on the road when the failure occurred). GMC requested that I take my Yukon to the dealer and find out exactly what had broke. I drove it to the dealer the next day (more sore arms) and left it for them to determine the damage that had been done. The dealer got back to me and told me that the power steering pump, shaft, actuator, as well as the mounting bracket had failed. The dealer had talked to the local GMC representative and they decided that they would help with the cost of the repair. They however told us that they were not buying the part or the labor but they would offer $200 toward the cost of the repair and we would have to come up with the balance $350 for a total of $550 to repair. I am also curious if GMC will be replacing my broken parts with the exact same parts that are destined to break again in the future. I would expect upgraded parts, but maybe they just want our business again a year or two when it breaks again, that is, if we live through it next time.

9 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2002 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 02/06/2006

While making a tight left turn, the power steering failed completely. The Yukon only had 72000 miles on it. When I had it repaired at the dealer, GMC denied warranty service due to mileage. I complained that a power steering pump should never fail in such a catastrophic way. The service advisor said that the new power steering pump was of a different design so we should not have to worry about another failure. He said it was not uncommon for this failure to happen. The shaft broke inside the pump. The pulley was still intact. Had my wife been driving, she would have had a very difficult time controlling the car.

10 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2001 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 09/07/2005

Wife was backing out of the driveway and heard a loud popping sound and the power steering went out. It was hard to turn the vehicle and she eventually made it home. I checked the steering and it was malfunctioning. I have heard this has been recalled in the past and we notified the manufacturer GMC and they stated our vehicle VIN was not on the list and could not be repaired unless we paid for the vehicle repair. I believe this is a safety hazard. If they had recalled this in the past it should have been rectified with the vehicles sold after the recall. I believe we should not have to pay for this and the manufacturer should take responsibility.

11 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2003 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 07/19/2005

The steering column of my 2003 Yukon denali with 50,910 miles got loose. I took vehicule to a GMC dealer to get it check and they told me that the upper steering bearing was failing and recommended immediate repairs that would cost me $698. 12. I contacted GMC and they decide to fix this problem at no charge to me. When I took the vehicule to get the steering column fix I mentioned to the service department employee that my steering wheel started to get tight during turns and if this problem was related to the other one. They inspected vehicule and found out that the power steering pump is failing too. I called GMC again to let them know about this and they told me that they would not fix this problem at no charge because they just fix the other one at no charge and that I have not spend a lot of money out of my pocket yet for repairs on this vehicule.

12 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2000 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 02/16/2005

The power steering pump failed while driving in the mountains. Fortunately not while on the curvy, side of the mountain roads. The vehicle required towing down the mountain to the nearest GMC dealer. The dealer replaced the pump and charged $200. Much inconveience was incurred, we had to be retrived from the mountains(65 miles), taken to the dealer by others to retrive vehicle, etc. There's a recall(id 05v005000) of 98,221 of this exact model and year for the exact same failure. GMC claims my vehicle is not covered by this recall and will not reimburse me the $200, which does not include the shuttle cost from the mountains to home and other incidentals.

14 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2000 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 02/12/2005

I spoke with a larry at the NHTSA back in February of this year. Faxed him a copy of the bill I had for the power steering in my Yukon xl says there was going to be more investigating and this recall for the power steering may be expanded to my truck. . The 1500 series but I haven't heard anything. Just a funny thing that this is exactly what happened to me the power steering cut out in the middle of a turn, but it doesn't concern the 1500.

17 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2004 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 06/26/2004

In my 2004 Yukon denali the steering wheel pump went up. The vehicle was purchased on may 8, 2004 and to my discovery the failure occured on June 26, 2004. While driving I noticed a loud humming sound coming from the truck. It was noticeable when I depressed the gas petal and also while turning the steering wheel. I contacted onstar to perform a diagnostic of the vehicle in hopes they could determine the problem. Onstar was able to assess my truck and informed me that nothing was malfunctioned electrically which indicated a manual dysfunction. For a matter of this magnitude to have gone wrong in such a short period of time, leads one to believe that the dealership sold me a lemon or did not perform a thorough assessment of the vehicle prior to selling it to me. On the next business day, June 28, 2004, I drove my truck into the service center, anderson automotive of hunt valley maryland from which it was purchased. To begin with, when I researched and choose the SUV of my liking, I went to anderson automotive of hunt valley and test drove the truck I wanted. The stock number of the test driven vehicle was 4j269973. The dealer assured me that the vehicle was in excellent condition and would not be sold to anyone and was on hold for me. At the time of purchase, the stock number of the vehicle sold to me was 4j195367 (a clear mismatch from the one I test drove). My concern is that this dealer intentionally switched and sold to me a fifty thousand dollar defective vehicle. This incident has raised red flags in my trust with this dealership and their consumer practices. I am so disturbed by this experience and how the clear deceptiveness in switched vehicles occurred, that if necessary, my next step will be to contact the dmva (dealer compliance) as well as the state's attorney general for further investigation into this matter.

18 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2001 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 02/05/2004

Power steering pump failure 2001 Yukon xl. Dealer determined failure to be a sheared shaft on the power steering pump, which caused immediate loss of power steering. Fortunately the failure occurred at low speed in a parking lot. Dealer and gm conclude that failure was due to cold weather . Temperature (according to log from local airport) was 21. 2 degrees f at the approximate time of failure (about 5:30 pm on 2-5-2004). Vehicle mileage was approximately 46,000 miles at the time. The loss of power steering was immediate turned one direction, everything was fine, turned back and had no power assist. Attempted to remedy through gm and was flatly denied, although dealer service manager admits that this is not a rare occurrence on vehicles of this platform. I am personally aware of one other failure on similar vehicle (chevy pickup), which was covered under the standard 36,000 mile warranty. Gm apparently does not consider this immediate loss of power steering on a 5500 pound SUV a safety issue I on the other hand am just glad it did not occur at highway speeds.

21 Power Steering Pump problem of the 1997 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 05/01/1997

The first time the power steering unit went into a hyper-super-squirrely(only mometary) mode was at 5000 mi. Vehicle has been to the dealership several times with the same response from the dealership every time, could not duplicate problem. The evo sensor has been replaced but the problem manifested once again after a few hundred miles. Steering has gone "hyper" at speeds above 30 mph, turning left and right, as well as on straight sections of roadway. It is a very frightening feeling to lose control of several thousand pounds of steel traveling at freeway speeds. Luckily I have always managed to regain control before going off of the road, I hope my luck continues. I suspect GMC will not remedy this situation unless numerous people are killed first.

22 Power Steering Pump problem of the 1997 GMC Yukon

Power steering assembly leaked. Certified mechanics have replaced assembly 4 times now. It is thought that the seal area between the pump assembly and fluid resevoir was warped. Resevoir replace this last visit. Am really interested in knowing if this problme has been common to Yukons.
