GMC Yukon owners have reported 15 problems related to steering gear box (under the steering category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of GMC Yukon based on all problems reported for the Yukon.
At 45729 miles we had to have the gear box replaced at the cost of $1044. Have been told by other mechanics a gear box is a part that is seldom replaced on any vehicle. I find it ridiculous to have to spend so much money on repairs for a newer vehicle especially when the vehicle cost was over $31000.

The vehicle has power steering but steering to the left became very difficult. There is no problem with right side steering. The dealership was contacted ,and because the vehicle was out of warranty, they would not make any corrections unless the consumer would pay for it. The consumer owns an auto repair business and determined it was the steering gear box. He purchased a new steering gear box and replaced the old one. This failure occurred at 47,000 miles. There have been no problems since the repair.

At aprox 6000 miles vehicle started making a loud squeeling noise every time vehicle was turned to the left. On first visit to dealer was told that some of them do this and there's nothing they can do. On second visit for same concern they put a "conditioner" in the steering gear box. On third visit I was told there was nothing else they could do. The avm (area vehicle manager) declined to make the repair. GMC customer assistance was useless. Took the vehicle to another dealer. They replaced the steering gear box. Problem has not reoccured. Was told by dealer that this has happened before and that the noise is caused by a pressure relief valve in the steering gear box relieving pressure. This has happened to one other person that I know of.
While driving at any speed, there was a twitching feeling in the steering column. Dealer examined the vehicle, and replaced the power steering gear box. Three months later the same symptoms were present again.

I have experienced intermittent loss of power steeringi in my 1997 GMC Yukon when making left turns. I took the vehicle in for service on 10/24/2003 (trouble not found). I took it in again on 10/31/2003 and they replaced the power steering evo sensor ($213. 60). Still have trouble. Again I took the vehicle for service on 11/19/2003 when the power steering pump was replaced ($648. 50). The vehicle still ng. Took it in on 12/1/2003,can't isolate trouble. Again on 12/10/2003, this time they changed the power steering box? so far the trouble seems to be fixed. Then I saw an article showing the exact same trouble I'd been experiencing with other GMC vehicles. However, my vehicle wasn't listed as one of the models they were looking at. This should be checked out.

A noticeable pull to the left when going around a curve that goes to the left, it will startle you at first. Possibly the steering box or related steering column. Has happened to many times to remember. Freinds of mine also experienced the same problem with 98 tahoe, I thought it was just my vehicle, then I did some research and there is a recall on this problem, which GMC says there is a potential for only like 45oo vehicles involved , but I believe there is a lot more. Please help .
Any recall on this vehicle? no safety defect listed.
On right turns steering wheel/ gear feels it is sliping on occasions, it feels as if the front wheels are sliding on ice for a second . GMC garage in el paso replaced steering pump, did not solve the problem.
While making a left or right turn on a curve, the steering feels like it goes away and there is no steering control at all. The steering gear box has been replaced by the dealership.
At higher speeds when traveling over 50 mph the power steering releases and the Yukon wanders all over the road. The steering box has been replaced twice. The problem still exists.
When driving at a speed of 30 mph and over , the steering releases for a few seconds and the vehicles wander all over the place . Also the steering feel loose at all times. Also when stepping on the brakes sometimes the truck doesn't stop , I also don't think the abs is working properly. I tried it in slippery conditions and I never felt the pedal shake . I had a 1995 Yukon before and it worked fine. 8ak.
Intermittently while driving, the steering wheel slightly turns either to the left or right. The dealer has replaced the gear box, the steering sensor and the computer module, but the problem still exists. Manufacturer has been notified.
