1 Steering Column problem of the 2021 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 01/14/2021

Gm changed the travel of the steering column so now it's only a few inches from the dashboard. In prior models, the steering wheel (sw) travel was much more. Due to gm's desire to save money and complete disregard for driver, passenger and other vehicles safety, the driver has to reach out to the sw resulting at dangerous elbow angles. In performance cars, the sw is designed to be close to the driver because physics principles of torque reveal: the greater the angle of reach, the more torque it requires to turn the sw. So reaching out with the elbow at zero to 10 degrees requires a much longer reach, thus greater force/torque and longer reaction time, than having the sw at a 30-40 degree 'elbow bend'. The point is, for a driver to turn the sw on this vehicle, it takes too much strength and too long a reaction time to safely operate it. I do not feel safe driving this model like I did with prior model years. With this 'land yacht' having an even longer wheelbase than before, the distance to the sw is even more critical in regards to reaction time and safe driving! plus, since the sw is so close to the dashboard, when I raise my leg to step on the brake pedal (which now I have to do because gm also took away the foot pedal adjuster!), my leg hits the bottom of the sw! the time it now takes to bring a foot up over the brake pedal, to look down to see if your leg is going to hit the sw and cause the sw to either stop moving or re-direct the vehicle into an unplanned direction, all while trying to stop this over 7,700 lb vehicle with mushier brakes than any model ever, is dangerously long. The overall reaction time to generally stop this model is at least 5 times that of my 2018 Yukon xl denali. The travel length of the sw needs to be increased 2-3 inches to safely operate this truck. Gm must be held accountable for increasing dangerous situations with their vehicles!.

3 Steering Column problem of the 2015 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 10/05/2018

Was driving about 7-10 mph in a wal mart parking lot when the steering on my 2015 GMC Yukon denali completely gave out which caused me to scrap a pole on the back door behind driver. Finally when vehicle came to a complete stop the steering wheel would freely spin and not in gauge the tires to rotate. Had the vehicle towed to the nearest GMC dear ship to have them asses the problem and told them this has to be from the root cause of a recall that a sensor will lose temp connection with steering and may cause an accident. Which did as well as injury to my wife who was driving. Now the vehicle is at the GMC dealership giving me a run a round that the steering column magically snapped and needs to be covered through extended warranty. I have an open complaint with the dealership as well as GMC it self. Please if you own this year vehicle be very careful this could have been a really horrible situation.

4 Steering Column problem of the 2015 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 09/14/2018

I give!!! now break lights not working!!! right break light is out and left driver is intermittent. Vehicle has 37k on it and was just picked up from the dealer after having 1 of many issues through the past year rectified and now this! this is a significant safety hazard and could tremendously injure someone. Right now my car cannot even pass inspection due to the faulty equipment installed by the manufacture that is a danger to my safety. I have owned many GMC's (6 total) through the years and this being the worst!! the latest, I have had the torque converter replaced in Aug 18 - due to shuddering and vibration. Then the steering column replaced due to popping , back hatch hinge replaced due to popping and malfunction, back glass door rubber gasket replaced due to leaking, sharkfin antenna replaced due to leaking, sunroof gasket replaced due to leaking, new tires at 500 miles due to excessive vibration. Back door adjusted due to slamming, and additional slight issues. The radio has a constant glitch on the screen since day one that after being taken in numerous times, of course the dealer cannot replicate the problem and keeps performing a flash update which never helps and as soon as I drive off it glitches again. I have contacted gm regarding the brake lights, radio, and now my passenger step is malfunctioning not to mention a recall was just released on the power steering. Will the repairs ever end? guess once I trade it in on another manufacture as this will most likely be the last GMC I will ever purchase!! I do not have time to live my life at the dealer for a high end purchase that is the worst mistake ever!! not to mention being a safety hazard!!!.

7 Steering Column problem of the 2015 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 06/16/2016

1. While driving steering wheel was making a clicking noise when turning. Dealer replaced upper steering column bearing and turn signal. Three months later dealer replaced steering column again due to same issue. 2. One month later both front coil springs were replaced. 3. When replaced springs, dealer found that left front upper ball joint was loose so replaced upper ball joint and upper control arm. 4. After replacing above mentioned parts, noise was still present when driving so dealer replaced both left and right front struts. 5. The following month right front strut was replaced again due to noise while driving. 6. One month after that service the radiator began leaking while on the road and the dealer replaced the radiator. 7. 07/12/2017 left front strut was replaced again. This is the 4th strut put in this vehicle. 8. 07/12/2017 a/c stopped working. Dealer said it needs new condenser which is on back order indefinitely at this point so not able to fix at this time. These issues happened over a period of 18 months. Not at a specific time. The steering column is still making a clicking noise while turning. We have taken the vehicle back, however the dealer says they are unable to duplicate the noise. If they end up replacing the steering column again it will be the third time. This vehicle is not trust worthy to drive long distances or cross country. Very disappointing for a $70,000 new vehicle.

8 Steering Column problem of the 2015 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 07/01/2015

Piping in the steering column. Not consistent. Happens daily.

9 Steering Column problem of the 2010 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 04/07/2015

Over a month ago I noticed a huge crack above steering column, the raised part. Knowing it was not a user error, I was planning on contacting GMC. Last week I noticed another crack on left side of air bag. I decided to look online and see if this happened to others. And yes it has. There are several years affected, 1993, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011. There are thousands of GMC owners who have contacted GMC as I have just done, without assistance. No recalls have been issued. This is a huge safety issue and I'm very very upset, frustrated and disappointed in GMC. I should not have to pay out of my pocket to get this fixed as it is GMC's responsibility! the sad thing is it will take a serious accident for them to resolve this situation.

10 Steering Column problem of the 2010 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 01/10/2015

A large crack appeared on the dash hump behind the steering wheel and grew larger leaving a hole exposing the steering column electrical wires. Another crack developed on the dash beside the upper left corner of the passenger side airbag. I am concerned with both electronics being exposed and jagged edges beside the airbag deployment area, the airbags may fail in a crash. I am also concerned that steering could eventually become impacted. I contacted gm customer service and they refused to provide assistance even though they know it is a common, well documented problem in their vehicles. Someone needs to hold them accountable for defects that can lead to safety issues. No impacts or collisions have led to this issue. It just simply appeared. It was stationary when discovered one morning. Although I am not certain the exact date, the problem was first noticed in January 2015.

Failure Date: 06/20/2006

: the contact stated in November when the vehicle was taken to the dealership for routine service, the dealership noticed the rear rotors were hitting the inside of the backing plates inside the hub. Also, the rotors were rusted. The front end was also observed to be shaking. The dealership determined the shaking was normal 4x4 characteristics; however the dealership installed a lube kit that goes on the steering column underneath the hood. The shaking returned and the dealership informed the contact the lube kit was no longer a remedy for this shaking problem. There was not another remedy offered.

22 Steering Column problem of the 2002 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 10/29/2005

I am writing to talk to you about my recurring issues with my steering column in my 2002 Yukon xl. In short, it rattles. On the road, it rattles at a low thud, thud, thud sound. Turning corners, it rattles with the same sound. Initially, when I took it to berglund Chevrolet, in roanoke, va, they attempted to remedy the problem with a lube kit. When the problem surfaced again, I brought it back and the intermediate steering column was replaced. 20,000 miles later, I face the problem for the 3rd time. I drive on the road, never off road. I have owned a number of vehicles, and always hold on to them until they exceed 150,000 miles. Never have I had to replace one steering column, in any vehicle, and I obviously have never heard of a vehicle requiring more than one. I have learned from GMC that there was a first generation fix and a second-generation fix. I really don't know which generation I got, but I do know it was not a fix. After some arguing, the first repair was covered. The second was covered, as well, but only after arguing once more. It seems perfectly clear to me that this should be repaired again, at no cost to me, because I have never received a satisfactory remedy to this problem ã‚ a problem acknowledged by GMC as needing to be remedied. It is obvious that my vehicle has not got the steering column solution that works. I have safety concerns. No one should expect to replace a steering column on a vehicle every 20,000 miles. It is not a filter or fluid that needs changing at intervals, and I refuse to have this treated as if it were regular maintenance. I am worried about the safety of a unit that wears out so quickly, and am very disturbed by the complacency of GMC about subjecting me to continuous repairs, and apparently hiding behind policies rather than doing the right thing with a customer.

23 Steering Column problem of the 2003 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 09/17/2005

We have had problems with steering knuckle/column from the very beginning. Dealer would diagnose as "just the way those cars are, nothing is wrong". Steering does not feel safe for a large car like the Yukon. I purchased an SUV to feel safer with family. But steering always feels loose especially when turning or going over bumps. Noises also when turning. Over time it just gets worse. It occurs every time you drive. I would like to purchase a newer model Yukon but refuse to waste money if this is how they drive. I don't think it's safe. This problem should be corrected by manufacturer.

24 Steering Column problem of the 2003 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 07/19/2005

The steering column of my 2003 Yukon denali with 50,910 miles got loose. I took vehicule to a GMC dealer to get it check and they told me that the upper steering bearing was failing and recommended immediate repairs that would cost me $698. 12. I contacted GMC and they decide to fix this problem at no charge to me. When I took the vehicule to get the steering column fix I mentioned to the service department employee that my steering wheel started to get tight during turns and if this problem was related to the other one. They inspected vehicule and found out that the power steering pump is failing too. I called GMC again to let them know about this and they told me that they would not fix this problem at no charge because they just fix the other one at no charge and that I have not spend a lot of money out of my pocket yet for repairs on this vehicule.

25 Steering Column problem of the 2003 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 03/01/2005

GMC Yukon 2003 looseness in front suspension. There was a rattle and or looseness in the front end. The problem had grown progressively worse with time. The dealer inspected the vehicle and suggested that the intermediate steering column should be replaced. The problem returned and had not been remedied. Recently the problem turned to creaks and groans when stopping, when accelerating from a stop there was a metal on metal sound.

26 Steering Column problem of the 2002 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 11/27/2004

We are now replacing the bushing in the steering column for the second time with less than 42,000 miles. This component was replaced originally at 28,000 miles and has failed again. With this failure has caused left wheel bearing to go out. At 58,000 mile the right wheel bearing is now in need of repair, should have gotten the extended warranty, none of this is covered after 36,000 miles. Also, the rear air will either blow cold until the thermastat is change to the red setting completely. When taken in with the initial failure of the steering column, I was told that the setting worked fine but would be noted incase of later failure so it might be covered under warranty.

27 Steering Column problem of the 2003 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 09/27/2004

While driving 65 mph and pulling a trailer vehicle stalled. Prior to stalling there was some hesitation and jerking as if not getting fuel to engine. The dealer took vehicle to dealership in arizona, and fuel pump had to be replaced. This was the second occurrence for fuel pump problem. Also, experienced steering problem. The steering would be sticking, and it would jam when making turns either left or right. The mechanic at dealership had to replace a seal in column shaft of steering wheel. The light clunk noise in the steering, low voltage, and insufficient fuel pressure on aceleration intermittently.

28 Steering Column problem of the 2003 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 09/11/2003

Excessive "play" in steering column of 2003 GMC Yukon, after 26,000 miles and 8 months of driving was repaired under warranty or maintenance service agreement. Dealer indicated that repair involved a lube kit for "interim steering shaft". Dealer advised that GMC issued a maintenance circular regarding this problem, which was caused by a defect or mistake by factory. Owner contacted GMC consumer affairs. A representative from detroit stated that no government recall issued on this specific vehicle/VIN#, but that perhaps GMC had issued a "special policy" to address this problem. GMC policy on "special policy" problems is to wait for maintenance problem to manifest itself and be idenrtified by owner, instead of informing owner and/or taking preventative maintenance.

29 Steering Column problem of the 2002 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 08/12/2003

Purchased a new 2002 GMC Yukon xl, at about 6800 miles the steering developed a rattle, dealer under warranty regreased the steering shaft, this helped for a about a year and it started again. Dealer re-greased with what they said was a new grease that should solve the rattle problem. It has started the rattle again and only has 38000 miles. I understand there is a redesigned steering shaft that solves this rattle problem. Here is the bulletin to solve the poor shaft design, should be a recall but looks like gm is only replacing on a case by case issue waiting for your warranty to be out, at which time they charge you for the poor design steering shaft. GMC tech bulletin 00-02-35-003m (latest revision) subject: clunking noise under hood and can be felt in steering wheel and/or steering column (replace upper intermediate steering shaft (I-shaft) assembly) #00-02-35-003m - (01/31/2007) models: 2002-2006 Cadillac escalade models 1999-2007 Chevrolet silverado models (classic) 2000-2006 Chevrolet suburban, tahoe models 2002-2006 Chevrolet avalanche 1999-2007 GMC sierra models (classic) 2000-2006 GMC Yukon, Yukon xl models 2003-2006 hummer h2.

Failure Date: 08/01/2003

Headlights fail to come on sometimes if steering wheel is tilted, it will have to move tilt on steering wheel sometimes they will come on in a certain position on the wheel and the interior dial will not make them come on, if they are on and high beamed or used it will make the lights go out all together, will not come on until tilt is readjusted.

31 Steering Column problem of the 2002 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 07/14/2003

On 07/14/03 at 22602 miles, we took our 2002 Yukon xl (regency edition) to suss pontiac in denver, colorado, to investigate a clunking/knocking sound coming from the suspension when turning which caused the steering wheel to vibrate. On occasion, the steering wheel had excessive play in the wheel and would hesitate when turning. Suss pontiac verified the complaint and found the "intermediate steering shaft" dry and clunking. The shaft was then lubed as per bulletin #ii-00-02-35-003b and we were told at the time that the problem should not reoccur. The problem recurred during the fall of 2005 while vacationing in texas. After discussing the incident over the phone we were told that it was not a safety concern, more of an irritation to those inside the vehicle and we should have no problem getting home. We made it back to denver without incident, but very annoying. On 10/25/05, the vehicle was taken to a different dealership (len lyall of aurora, CO) only to learn that a new bulletin (# unkwn) had been issued requiring that the "intermediate steering shaft" be replaced. Len lyall then pulled a vehicle service inquiry listing all services performed on the vehicle. However, it was noted in the summary that the shaft had been replaced, but my copy of the invoice referred to the shaft being lubed. I am now troubled by the fact that GMC found it necessary to replace the shaft and still telling me that it is not a safety concern. I would think that anything having to do with the essential component (brakes, steering, tires, etc) is a life safety issue. Does it take someone to be seriously injured or die to institute a mandatory recall?.
