Steering Problems of GMC Yukon - part 2

Monday 5th 2022, (2pm)I was driving with the ac on high as I had just left the mall. The interior was hot. As I left the mall and came to a stop light. . . The car would rev at stop, and continue to do so until the light changed. I had the oil and transmission fluid changed at 135000. It is currently at 138000. I turned off the ac because it did not seem to work (to cool the car down) and rolled the windows down and open the sun roof. Tuesday 6th, I was leaving the store (4pm) and again I turned the ac on and approached a stop light. When I stopped at the light, the car started revving or idling in pulses again as it did on Monday, however as I went to turn right onto the street, there was no power steering at all. Startled, I pressed the brake, shifted into park, turned the SUV off. Then restarted the SUV and the steering had returned to normal. I kept the ac off and drove home.

The contact owns a 2013 GMC Yukon denali xl. The contact stated that while at a stop light, the vehicle suddenly started fluctuating while idling. The a/c was activated and the contact noticed that the vehicle was not being cooled inside the cabin. The contact stated that the failure recurred the following day. The contact stated that while attempting to make a right turn, the vehicle lost power steering functionality. The contact turned off the vehicle and shifted into park(p). The contact restarted the vehicle and the a/c unit independently turned off. Additionally, the vehicle regained power steering functionality and the vehicle idled as designed. The contact had not taken the vehicle to the dealer to be diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 138,000.

My wife was driving at a low speed completing a right hand turn through an intersection and as she completed the turn the vehicle completely lost all steering. The vehicle ran up onto a curb but she was able to stop before she hit a poll. The vehicle was towed home and I found that there was no power to the steering wheel controls, the horn didn't work and there were electronic steering warnings. I also found that the steering wheel could spin freely like a top without any movement of the wheels. Upon examination in the engine compartment I found that the bottom of the steering shaft was completely disconnected and the single bolt that holds the 2 pieces together was missing. I took the vehicle to the local GMC dealership and they conformed that the bolt was missing and the shafts came apart which lead to the steering failure. The free movement of the steering wheel caused the internal malfunction of the steering wheel electronics. Prior to the steering failure there was no indications of any steering issues. The steering warning lights didn't come on until the steering failure. My wife and children were about to get on the freeway when the failure occurred and could have led to a fatal accident if this failure occurred while she was driving on the freeway. I contacted gm and opened a case but was informed that they would not provide any assistance with the repair which is about $2900. I don't understand how gm would design a steering shaft that has a single point failure that could lead to a catastrophic failure. The vehicle has 120k miles and has never been in any accidents. I expect a basic safety feature such as the steering to never fail during operation. I will never purchase another gm vehicle and will tell as many people as I can about the potential failure. Upon vehicle startup, dashboard displayed a warning about a problem with the power steering system. I attempted to drive the vehicle, and it appeared the power steering was not functioning. I did not believe I could safely handle the vehicle without the power steering functioning normally. I tried turning the car off briefly and then back on, which did not correct the problem. However, I then turned the car off for approximately 10 minutes. Upon restarting the car after being off for approximately 10 minutes, the error message was gone and the power steering functioned normally.

The contact owns a 2015 GMC Yukon denali xl. The contact stated that while driving at 75 mph, the steering wheel hardened as both a warning chime and a service power steering warning message appeared on the instrument panel. The contact stated that he crossed two lanes of traffic before gaining control of the vehicle's power steering. Excessive force was used to steer the vehicle to his place of work. The contact called several dealers as well as the manufacturer who all informed him that his vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 14v719000 (steering). The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 125,000.

After pulling out from parking lot into roadway, steering wheel locked up (right) and vehicle proceeded uncontrolled into a telephone pole - injuring driver. Driver stage 1 & 2 together with seatbelt pretensioner deployed upon impact. No warning lamps or defect symptoms prior to time of failure. Inspection revealed dtc codes for power steering of u0420:00 (invalid data received from power steering module) and u3000:49 (control module internal malfunction). Scanner evidences power steering position sensor data not being reported. Vehicle VIN indicates that it was included in NHTSA recall 21v455000. Power steering component part nos: 85103817, 848935231 and 85116776.

Since I've owned the hybrid Yukon, I've had nothing but issues. GMC only made a limited amount of the hybrid models but due to the issues discontinued manufacturing them. Why weren't the vehicles taken off the market? started with the jolting from a stop, to not wanting to go into reverse, check engine light, to hybrid battery not shifting into gear, last power steering locked while driving then not starting at all. Had sat at the dealership for 4 weeks now sitting at another hybrid shop awaiting for the inverter converter control to be delivered and put in. Have spent thousands in the last 2 months repairing trying to figure out issues.

Vehicle has been in for repair on (4) separate occasions for the same issue. Without warning, several error messages will pop up indicating problems with power steering, suspension, air bags, etc. In all there are 7 or 8 different error messages that all appear at once, but as soon as they do appear the power steering stops working. This has happened both from a cold start and while driving. In total the vehicle has lost power steering on 12-15 separate occasions. The service department at the dealership has had a hard time diagnosing the problem, but recently said that a faulty serial gateway module was to blame. After waiting 1. 5 months for a replacement part, I was told that the repair had been made and the vehicle was ready for pick up. Within 5 minutes of leaving the dealership the power steering failed again while driving, forcing me off to the side of a busy road. The same 7-8 error messages appeared on the screen.

When driving my steering wheel jerks causing vehicle to veer, stabilitrak snd traction lights flash, lights flicker all the while driving. Vehicle nearly lost control while doing so. Auto shop cannot duplicate the issue nor any codes pop up . Very dangerous for a family while we are driving and saw many complain about this issue.

Last Friday evening, while driving the vehicle on the highway, the power steering suddenly stopped working. I heard a warning chime and saw an indicator "service power steering" message on my display. I managed to steer the vehicle into a parking lot to inspect the engine bay and fuses. When I restarted the engine, the power steering was functioning. The power steering failure has not reoccured since it initially happened. My vehicle is a 2019 year model. I noticed that gm has a recall for 2021 year models for this very same problem. I'm wondering if the recall shouldn't be expanded given my experience.

The largest issue was today, 2/22/2022, when I was driving doing 56 miles per hour it felt like it wouldn't accelerate. Then all of a sudden, the wheel kind of jerked right and the car shifted down all on it's own and I was doing 25 mph. The check engine light came on immediately after the violent jerking happened. I was on a 4 lane highway and had to immediately pull over onto the shoulder. It was jerking forward and back as I was trying to pull over on a freeway where the speed limit is 70 mph!!! I had my 80-year-old mother in the car with me. And yes!! it put us both at great risk! I had to call a tow truck and they towed it to a dealership 9. 8 miles away. When I talked to the assistant manager, he said that there were 3 other GMC Yukon 2016 that had come in today - all were 2016 GMC Yukon models with 125k miles. My GMC has 124,700 miles all with transmission problems. This can't be an anomaly. So I got online and there are many, many complaints about this transmission. As a matter of fact, it appears in 2019 there was a class action lawsuit about this very thing. I will not know until tomorrow for sure what the issue is - because the dealership could not get to it today. However, something significant happened. As a side note, recently I had an electrical problem where sensors, etc are all saying need to be serviced and none of them are working. I had appt today at 10:30 am to have them check this. On the way there, the violent jerking and sudden downshift and check engine light came on. I was scared to death and so I pulled over and called a tow truck. The dealership did not tell me this is a common issue, nor was I aware. The dealership told me if it is in fact the transmission - cost is $6,000!!! I need someone to contact me to discuss this. Multiple times upon starting my Yukon I get a message on the dash that states power steering disabled drive with care. I have no power steering until the computer has enough time to reset itself, usually about 15 min. This issue has been confirmed at our shop with the code being for the power steering. We have had it into the dealership and they found the same code but were unable to get it to recreate for them. It is not something that happens every day so I would have to leave it with them for a long period of time and that is not an option. This started happening within a couple weeks of buying the vehicle. It started for me in March 2020, with less than 17k miles on the truck.

Car is shaking when accelerating. Feels like it will cause more damage.

The contact owns a 2015 GMC Yukon. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle, the power steering malfunctioned causing the steering wheel to become very difficult to turn in either direction. The contact indicated that recently when the failure occurred the vehicle also shut off nearly causing a crash. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who diagnosed that the battery cables needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The contact indicated that the vehicle was previously serviced under the NHTSA campaign number: 18v586000 (steering) however, the failure recurred intermittently. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 75,000.

The steering wheel doesn’t always turn back straight like the electric power steering has a momentary lapse in working.

This is the second time it happened the first time I parked my car while the engine was on and I got down real quick got back on my car and when I tryed turning all of a sudden my steering wheel keept turning the opposite way and parking control light appear saying it was off and it keep moving my steering wheel I all of a sudden turned my car off and back on the second time that happened I was going in a parking when it did the samething I was turning in the parking and it started turning my steering wheel the opposite way it started saying again parking control off and the system started going crazy and my car completely turned off I was left in the middle of the parking lot had tu put my car in parking and turn my car off reall quick and turned it on and was able to park but I did get really scared and been really scared to drive my car ever since because I don’t know if it will do the same thing again while driving . I have not taken it to get checked but will be making an appointment because it is a really scary situation.

Driving down road car locks and unlocks, breaks lock up, slows down, radio went off ac starts going high and low took to dealership they said bad negative battery cable was told had a short got vehicle back driving down road ac starts going from high to low steering wheel goes up and down on its own breaks lock up again says service traction control flashing almost got hit by a semi my wife was driving and had three kids in car dealership will not do anything have owned car for 1 week. I have read now this is a common occurrence, this is not safe in anyway shape or form someone is going to get killed!!!!!.

Hello, I am a repair technician for a general motors dealership in reno nv. Vehicle in question has no ability to to placed in neutral without the engine running. Per gm repair guides the vehicle must either be placed in neutral with engine running or a special tool is needed to placed trans into neutral in to move vehicle. This is a major safety concern as vehicle became engine became disabled and the vehicle could not be moved. Steering is locked, parking brake automatically sets and neutral position on gear selector cannot be selected. This happened at our dealership. But I can only imagine this happening to someone on the highway. Stuck blocking the road with no ability to move the vehicle to safety. I feel this is extremely dangerous and I am sending an email to general motors technical assistance also.

The vehicle was stationary and upon turning it on a message showed up on the display stating to immediately take the vehicle for service and to drive carefully because of a power steering issue. Once the vehicle was placed in reverse to begin to leave the parking spot, it was evident that there was no steering available on the vehicle. It would only move forward and backwards but the steering wheel would not move in any direction at any degree making the vehicle impossible to drive safely or carefully to any location. Attempting to drive the vehicle for service would have caused an accident and ultimately was impossible so we decided to have the vehicle towed. The dealership service department informed us that this was a problem with the system/software and that the vehicle had many more history codes for this issue. After informing us that the update for the steering system was completed, they also said it may not be the fix based on the multiple history codes. The car is still being inspected as they are unable to be sure the cause or that it will not occur again. Records of service can be provided once the vehicle is returned to us and messages of communication with the service department can also be provided upon request.

On 3/20/21 I went out with the family out got to our destination well but when I started my vehicle to go back home I got a message on the display "service power steering drive with care" when I went to turn the steering wheel to drive I couldn't because it was too hard, after fighting it, I was able to drive my car back home with my family in it. Today 3/22/21 I called GMC to do a complaint and ask if there is a recall for this issue on this type of vehicle since I don't have any warranty anymore on the vehicle due to passing the 36 months by 1 month but not by mileage since I have 28500 miles on it. I was told by the GMC representative that at this time GMC does not have any recalls for this VIN number. After doing much research I found that this is a very recurring problem with GMC, Chevrolet and Buick vehicles. On the past they have done recalls for this type of problem but the lovely automakers and lobbyist are finding the loop holes so they are held accountable for known mistakes until some family tragically dies in an accident due to automaker not being held accountable for known issues. Please do something about this issue, tooooo many customers having this issue and no accountability on automakers behalf.

When I let go of the brake the vehicle accelerates on its own. It's a scary feeling, I feel like don't have control of the vehicle. Another problem that I have is that I can not put my vehicle in gear right away when I turn on the engine. Another problem that I have is rattling sound and vibration on the gas pedal when I accelerate.

Our GMC Yukon locked into 4wd while accelerating/driving (approx 15-25mp) the kids to school through the neighbourhood, jerked violently as though braking hard, and steering was extremely impaired. The "service 4wd" message appeared on our dashboard. The Yukon is locked in 4wd, and extremely difficult to steer and maneveur. It jerks violenly when turning. We are unable to drive due to safety concerns.

The power steering locks up and the display on dash reads power steering losethis has happened 6 times and each time I've had to go rescue my wife this is her car. I found out that I could remove the battery cable from battery to reset the problem but it only last for a short while.

While driving on highway institute steering power and could barely control the steering wheel while power assist warning, stabilize,airbag light and passenger windows wouldn't go up.

Car is not performing as it should.

Complete loss of power steering assist, after crossing over a set of railroad tracks. Service power steering message displayed on dash. After turning vehicle off and back on, the power steering worked fine. Happened a 2nd time after hitting a pot hole. Vehicle is in motion on busy street, and complete loss of steering assist makes this very unsafe.

When I get to a red light or a parking spot sometimes the power steering gets hard and it gets hard for me to steer it doesn't do it all the time but I has done it more than 3 times and scared vehicles power steering might stop working one day.

Power steering loses power temporarily, power goes off and come back on when I'm coming to a stop and making a slow turn.

Driving truck and couldn't gain control and was driving on its own.

I can turn the steering wheel side to side and the car dies power goes low air conditioning fans blow less and get warnings on dash to roll down drivers window and then back up.

Steering locks up at lower speeds or when turning into a parking lot all the ligths shut off at the same time the steering does it has happened more at night lights flicker both interior lights and exterior lights a/c shuts off radio shuts off I have went to different dealers and have not been able to fix this problem even doh I show them videos of what it does both my wife and I have almost had a few accidents because of this.

While driving at approximately 65 mph on a highway, the locks engaged, the radio shut down, power steering was lost, and the vehicle slowed down/braked on it's own. Thankfully we were able to move to the side of the road without getting hit. The only message on the dash was "service stabilitrack. " the dealer and an independent mechanic have been unable to replicate the error message.

Power steering lost momentarily after operating for 45 minutes and returning when vehicle is shut off for 10 minutes.

While driving on the freeway at 75 mph I felt significant reduction in speed and the rpms went pretty high. It felt as if I had my foot on the accelerator and the brake at the same time. There was also a burnt smell. After a few minutes it went back to normal. This continued to happen sporadically so I took it to my mechanic he inspected the vehicle could not find an issue he also ran a code scan. No codes pertaining to this issue only knocker sensor and O2 sensor. I replaced those anyway. Then a few days later I was driving to work at it happened again going about 55 mph it felt like the transmission had downshift to a very low gear there was smoke and really bad burning smell. I pulled over immediately and called my mechanic. He towed the vehicle to his shop still could not find a problem. After several months of sitting I had to drive the vehicle home. After approximately 5 miles there was smoke and small flames coming from behind the front drivers side wheel. My mechanic checked the brake, it had engaged without me pressing the pedal and stuck. Now we are having issues getting brake fluid to the rear brakes. Possibly the proportioning valve.

Vehicle will jump forward when going into auto stop as if you are sitting at a light behind someone you would hit them, sometimes going down the road when going into hybrid mode it will stall and start jerking forward and steering locked up wouldn't turn witch would cause to run into someone.
