Honda Accord owners have reported 89 problems related to alternator/generator/regulator (under the electrical system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Honda Accord based on all problems reported for the Accord.
Passenger side power window stopped working. Mechanic I spoke to said the window regulator is broken and needs to be replaced. Up until the day it broke, the window would get stuck and not roll back-up. This happened many times until it broke. The issue, in my opinion, didn't appear to be because of any weather. The car was never in an accident, nor was the passenger window ever tampered with or vandalized.

7/8/2013 approaching a stop sign on a flat residential street, the car suddenly died. It restarted right away. The next morning the car died as soon as I put it in gear. Again it restarted. On my way home from work that same day all the lights on the dash came on for a second, but the car did remain on, although there seemed to be a second or two where everything felt like it froze up. Ever since then, I have to hold the key turned for about 5 whole seconds to keep the car started. If I let go right away, the car immediately dies. Then on Friday 8/31, all the lights flashed on the dash, and then the car died completely as I was accelerating on the on ramp to the highway. I was able to pull over quickly and fortunately did not cause an accident. After a few minutes the car did restart and I was able to make it home. I called my Honda dealer in July after the first incident, and was told they would only look at it for $100 diagnostic fee. I had my local independent mechanic check everything they could think of a few days later , battery, alternator- and the last resort they had was the ignition switch. Honda has already had two recalls on my vehicle for ignition switch issues, 2002 and 2005. The Honda dealer was very unwilling to check anything this time around and made it very clear that I would be responsible for paying for the diagnostic check , and that did not seem appropriate given the ignition switch issues in the past.

I was driving on interstate 20/59 near ft. Payne, alabama with the cruise control set on 75 mph. I changed lanes to pass a slower car but did not touch the gas pedal. The car started to accelerate on its own. I tapped the breaks to turn cruise control off but the car continued to accelerate without touching the gas pedal. The acceleration was not a full throttle acceleration, just a moderate increase. I then shifted the car from drive to neutral and the rpm's jumped up to redline, again without touching the gas pedal. Luckily, a rest area was approaching and I managed to pull the car into the rest area parking lot playing with the drive/neutral of the transmission and using the brakes. Once I made it to a parking space I turned the car off and shifted it into park. I waited a few seconds and turned the car back on. The rpm's again jumped up to redline without me touching the gas pedal. I shut the car off again and put my foot underneath the gas pedal and pulled up. I cranked the car again and it acted normal. I checked under the hood and everything looked fine. After some deliberation, we decided to continue on our trip and the car was fine for the next 4. 5 hours. We drove back Sunday, may 19 and the car again drove fine for 6. 5 hours and hasn't had a problem since. The morning before the incident, I changed the alternator and oil. I strongly believe that this had nothing to do with the alternator or oil change. Also, I doubled checked the carpet mat in the car and it was not even close to the gas pedal. I am not sure if anyone else has experienced this problem with a Honda Accord. I am a mechanical engineer and I am dumbfounded by this. Being in a car with uncontrollable acceleration is quite unnerving.
The regulators of two rear windows made loud noise during window open operation on sept. 22, 2011. One of the window was not able to close all the way up after it was open. These two windows only are used less than a dozen times. It was raining that day. The windshield was smoggy while I was driving because the window was not able to close. The defrost was not able to clear the windshield. This defect can potentially resulted in fatal accident.

1999 Honda Accord v6 2 dr sometimes starts and not start. Ongoing issue for 3 months. Took it a Honda dealer who could not duplicate the problem. Told via internet it may be a main relay, coil or fuel pressure regulator. What's scary is Honda has no clue about this issue. All recalls (2) have been completed.
The headlights on my 2004 Honda Accord go dimmer and brighter about every minute while driving or parked. This headlight problem only occurs when the a/c or defrost is on. I believe the extra load on the electrical system with these components turned on is causing the headlights to dim about every 60 seconds. It could be related to a fan or other engine component turning on and off, not sure. The dealer replaced my battery and checked the alternator but the problem still occurs. The dealer says it is normal for Honda Accords to do this, but I think there should be a recall. This is very distracting to myself and the drivers in front of me. It looks like I am flashing my lights.

The contact owns a 2005 Honda Accord. While driving approximately 65 mph, all of the warning lights illuminated on the instrument panel. The engine abruptly shut off and the vehicle could not be restarted. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who stated that the failure was related to the battery. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred twice more. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic again and the alternator was replaced; however, there was no resolution to the malfunction. Recently, the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer and they stated that the failure was related to the air condition system component. The vehicle was repaired and there had been no further occurrences. The failure mileage was 34,000 and current mileage was 34,300. Updated 10/14/08 updated 10/23/08.
Car idles high and eratic since a new alternator was put on due to light(in and out) flickering along with fan and radio cutting out when a/c unit is used and cooling fans kick on and off. Since then car idles high, surges went fron tacking 1100 cold to 1500. Went from warm idle at 600 and is now 8-900rpms. Lights still do the same thing but they agree there was a voltage drop after two dealers said it was acharcteristic. After two month the cars going back in for a second seat track and a syl plate that was damaged. Now along with a list of problems the front bumper is pealing in same spot on left and right side near headlights. I alreadt complained about the bumpers not fitting. Dealer did idle relearn procedeure that did nothing. Check fuel cap message comes on and check engine light was on. They claim after 20 years of driving and 4 Hondas,I don't know how to put a gas cap on. Worst car I ever had. The worst part is the attitude of the dealers and Honda. I have been waiting for over two months for a rep,las time dealer snuck a note in that I refused to see the rep. I faxed them a demand letter to see the rep and another dealer was also supposed to set a meeting up. They claim he is out with a bad back(philadelphia area rep,)I am suing Honda under the lemon law. I had enough. The suit was filed and my court date is in October, contact me with any questions or comments. Car alo smell like a rotten egg.
Car idles rough and stalls, check fuel cap message comes on. This was after they replaced alternator due to lights flickering and radio and fans going in and out. Alternator did not help and now the idles is high and eratic, system that detects missing fuel cap is inop. When car comes to a stop the idle stops real hgigh and comes down as you sit at the light. The dealer says the owners maual is wrong about the way system works. I drove two identical ones and while the cars were still of poor quality, the idle was the same as before they messed with car. Other issues include bad seat tracks, bad upulstry, paint on bumpers improperly finished. Honda refuses to fix these issues. I am taking it under the lemon law and urge all others to do the same.
Ongoing isuues with electircal system, lights flickering, accessories going in and out, seat uhpulstry and paint and seat frame. Had into another dealer and they said bad paint ,bad fabric and flickering lights are chacteristics of the 2008 Honda Accords. Service manager varified all problems and then I get a call later to pick up car because they tried to fix the seat and couldnt so they ordered another seat frame. I picked the car up next day with fraudulent paperwork, wrong dates and mialege. I was wondering why seatbelt did not feal tight. I get home and see that when they took seat out to try and fix, mechanic did not install seat belt back on the frame and he distryed the syl plate taking seat in and out and now the bolt cover is also missing. Dealer picked up car from and brought it back. Did not send car back with paperwork or even an apolagy. They claim they ordered replacement parts to fix what they damaged. Please email me and I will let you know anything youd like. Honda was no help. Fourth time Honda owner and last! Hondas quality and attitude is so poor, I am going back to american cars.
Vehicle passenger seat creaks and is not stable, lights on car continue to flicker and dim in and out when a/c and headlights are on. Very dangerous. Someone will think you are brightening them or stopping suddenly and will either cause a crash or road rage incident. Today eddie milan, general manager of sloane Honda called me (can verify by cell phone bill) and "told me not to come back to sloane Honda anymore" great attitude after multiple purchases and sending multiple customers. Honda refuses to admit they have problems>I will complain everyday that it gives me problems. I urge all consumers who have these problems to keep complaining until Honda fixes this issue. Cars have problems. But flickering headlights and taillights are a danger.
There is a large voltage drop that can be seen in the lights at night . . . The lights really dim as the alternator cycles . . It occurs every night when driving and happens at steady rpms and when decelerating . . I know this is not a major complaint but the car is new and it may turn into something down the "road" , time wise for owners . . What worries me that in a few months that the voltage drop may cause a problem and stall engine or lights dimming may pull excessively on battery and charging system and cause failures in other areas . . Thank you very much in advance for your help and the forum to pass on concerns that maybe safety concerns.
Cars lights dim and blink everytime the cooling fan kicks on and off, this includes headlights, brake lights, all interior lights,a/c fan dims, radio gets softer. This is dangerous to drive at night. People think you are flashing them and jamming on my brakes. I also have problems with upholstry, side air bags, right seat track, out of line bumper and pealing paint. Honda has to do something with my 2008 Honda Accord ex coupe before someone gets killed. Please someone help me.
The 2008 Honda Accord ex-l nav 4 cylinder suffers from poor headlight performance. While driving at night, the headlight intensity frequently fluctuates causing distraction and reducing nighttime visibility. My interpretation of the local Honda dealership diagnosis is provided below. Poor headlight performance is normal due to the operation of the electrical load detector (eld). The function of the eld is to provide electrical system demand information to the onboard computer module. The onboard computer then uses the provided information to adjust alternator output which ultimately results in fuel savings. Honda is assuming that customers are willing to sacrifice normal headlight performance for the possibility of increasing fuel mileage. The operational design of one system produces a side affect in another system that results in a safety risk. Risks of operating a vehicle with poor headlight performance are provided below. 1. Reduced visibility and driving concentration could result in a collision. 2. Other drivers could mistake a headlight intensity fluctuation as aggressive driving behavior resulting in driver confrontation.
Exterior lights flicker noticeably when the a/c engages and disengages. This happens every 10-15 seconds. I have taken to my Honda dealership, and they did not want to admit that this was an issue.
My headlights and taillights flicker dim to bright approximately every 30 seconds when the a/c is on. This is a new 2008 Honda Accord ex 4cyl. Honda has checked the vehicle and says this is normal. This is a safety issure to the driver and others.
I have a 99 Honda Accord in which the engine stalled while driving. I didn't realize it until I tried to turn the wheel and realized that the steering wheel locked. It took several times to restart and took it to the mechanic. I thought it might be the alternator but the mechanic said no because the light would have come on. He said it was the ignition switch. Honda had a recall on these in 2003. I was never notified of the recall because Honda said my switch was not apart of the recall. I am having the same problems with my car stalling while driving as the switch with the recall. I called Honda to rectify the situation and to find out why they didn't notify me of the potential problem. I have two little girls who ride in this car which by the way is my only car and we could have gotten killed due to this manufacturing defect.
My car was parked for two weeks, as I just purchased another vehicle. I went to drive my 2001 Honda Accord ex sedan and all of my lights on the instrument panel were lit and the car was making a funny noise. After towing the vehicle to the shop I was told my alternator bracket bolt had broken off inside. After researching online I found a couple of complaints in regard to the same issue:
broken alternator bracket or lower mounting bolt. Honda. Tech line summary. . Read more...

Check engine light came on. Had the dealer check for the code which came up as p1491, egr valve issue. There is documented recall/note for this major design defect part, but only for 8yr/80k miles. I called american Honda and asked for "good faith"/if they would pay for the repair. Am/Honda refused my request. My 99 Accord ex v6 has 130k miles. This is a known documented design flaw. Emission parts should last the life of the car. Had to shell out $300 for that repair. I have owned 7 other Honda's plus this car. This is the first time I have had this type of issue. American Honda needs to do better. I am seriously considering changing car brands, possibly switching to Toyota.
Alternator bracket cracked twice in one year.
Driving home at night in heavy rain with family when the srs light came on followed less than a minute later by the abs light. Less than 1 minute later car died on the road. Battery was so dead that starter would not even turnover. Had to be towed home. It was determined the next day that the delphi alternator was putting out no voltage. It had blown open 4 of its 6 diodes in the rectifier assembly. Behind the back cover of the alternator when opened up. Car needed a new alternator at 68,000 miles. I was told by many that this was a very common problem with the '1998 to '2002 Accord v6 models which used this delphi built alternator. Complete alternator failure caused the srs and abs lights to come on due to a low voltage condition in the car's electrical system possibly rendering both of these important safety systems useless with the warning lights on. The battery light never came on. I replaced the alternator with a bosch unit as I did not want the problem to occur again. I called Honda in CA to inform them of this problem on 1/18/06. I still have the defective oem alternator.

While the consumer husband was driving, the vehicle stopped with no warning. He was sitting in traffic and then pushed the vehicle to the side of the road. It was then towed to the dealership, and they found the alternator failed. The alternator was replaced. Updated 12/07/05.
My 2000 Honda Accord v-6 has approximately 85,000 miles on it and I have had very few problems. Always took to dealer for maintenance/repair. I had the alternator replaced in June 2005, and within 2 weeks of getting the car back, the srs light came on. I called the dealer and they said I should bring the car in right away. I paid $68 to have the system "tested" and was told I needed to replace the entire computer system for the air bags at a cost of $575, or I could have them reset it and it may or may not come back on. I asked what happens when the light was on and was told that the airbags just won't work. I opted for the reset. Now, 2 weeks later, the light is back on. I have done some internet research and have found that not only is this a known problem, but the "cures" that are suggested by the dealer are all over the map. I find it incredible that Honda is not responsible for this defect in a mandated safety device. My family will hold Honda responsible if I am injured or killed due to a non-inflating airbag. I do not believe the company is taking the airbag issue seriously. My daughter was thankfully not killed in a serious accident last June in her civic, whose airbags did not deploy when she was hit with such force that it tore the front engine housing off her car and resulted in a total loss. The Honda folks told us then that sometimes the car isn't "hit the right way" and the sensors don't register that the airbags should deploy. I think the same government that requires these devices be installed on all cars (and the ones we pay for when purchasing the cars) should hold the car makers/dealers responsible for making sure they are operable.
1999 Honda Accord developed a problem with the alternator. The vehicle begun to lose power, braking and steering. There was no indication of a problem. The dashboard light was supposed to illuminate when the alternator was not charging the battery. The dealer refused to consider any compensation.
The bolt backed out of the pulley in the engine, resulting in ruined pulley/ bent the crank shaft/loss of power steering/ defective alternator, and air conditioning (a/c) failure. Dealership was surpride. Consumer, had to pay out of pocket for the new pulley.
While driving approximately 40 mph engine stalled. Cause of problem was undetermined. The dealer said they forgot to hook the alternator to the battery. Consumer didn't like the way the car was driving and didn't feel comfortable. The brakes also performed poorly.
The seat belt, brake, door, emergency and srs lights were constantly burning at different times on the consumers 200 Honda Accord. The dealer replaced the alternator.
I purchased a new 2000 Honda Accord v6 in June of 2000. It is now 4 1/2 years old and has fewer than 18,000 miles. About 1 week ago I started hearing a whine or whirr and took it to the dealer today (12/15/04). It checked out to be a bad alternator, and they said it would be over $500 to fix!! I found seven complaints on this site and all of them (including mine) share a defective air bag light which comes on intermittently. Mine has been coming on since almost day 1. Honda dealership told me back then it was due to some clothes or cushion blocking some sensor at the back of the seat and was nothing to worry about. I have had maintenance done every 3 months or so, the most recent of which was December 4, 2004. At that time, there was no whine, no engine warning lights, or any indication of anything wrong, but I was told I needed a new battery. I was surprised to hear that, but now I know why. It was a few days after that I began hearing the noise that was today diagnosed as a bad alternator. Again, good maintenance record, fewer than 18000 miles, no warning lights, bad alternator. I am driving 300 miles this coming Saturday and am scared to death--hoping that it is fixed completely and that nothing else goes wrong. I hope this gets some attention from NHTSA!.
Purchased new 2000 Accord ex v-6, 4 dr-replaced transmission at 10,000 miles, then again around 55,000 miles. Now on third transmission and wondering how long this one will last. Also, now the srs light is on and they say the seat belt has to replaced, as well as now the alternator and tensioner are being repalced ($600 job!). Based on some other complaints, it seems the two are related, as well as the alternator problems being a result of the transmission problems.
The srs airbag light came on at approximately 69,000 mi. The car was taken to dealer and no fault codes were found on the computer. I had the delphi alternator load tested and determined that could be the culprit. During this time, I also had both of my headlamps burned out within weeks of each other. I replaced the alternator with an aftermarket one and have not had any problems since.
Various problems with 2000 Honda Accord. The alternator failed, the egr valve failed, the srs light illuminated, the driver's seat back panel had fallen due to s defective plastic anchor pin, the a/c stopped working, and the front passenger door seal at the bottom was falling off.
The vehicles automatic transmission would slip between first and second gear. The interior lights were intermittent, the alternator was found faulty and made noises, and there was moaning coming from the engine area at times. The consumer requested reimbursement.
Alternator failure. Driving 60 mph alternator failed along with battery. Vehicle completely shut down at 60 mph at night in the desert. Vehicle almost caused major accident. Alternator replaced three times already. Possible passenger side air bag issue.
While driving altenator failed. No lights illuminated. The consumer stated that there should be a warning light when altenator stops charging. Vehicle had to be pushed off the roadway. The vehicle drove until the battery failed resulting in a sudden stop.
