1 Brakes Failed problem of the 2019 Honda CR-V

Failure Date: 08/22/2024

On 8/21/2024 my vehicle was parked in my driveway and my husband noticed that the brake lights were on. The vehicle was parked and the emergency brake was not on, and the vehicle was off. We turned the vehicle on and the brake lights went off. On 8/22/2024 I was driving on the service road at 45-50 mph when I noticed the traffic light ahead changing to amber I began to slow down, however; when I pressed the brake pedal there was a loud griding sound. The car would not stop and the dashboard said "brake system failure". I was inches from rearing ending another vehicle! I pulled into a parking lot and the following warnings were displayed, lane keeping assist failure, brake hold system failure, adaptive cruise control failure, power steering system failure, hill start assist failure, road departure mitigation failure, vehicle stability assist failure, collision mitigation failure.

2 Brakes Failed problem of the 2016 Honda CR-V

Failure Date: 05/02/2021

Pulled the car out of the parking lot and shifted the gear to drive. Even before I pressed the gas pedal, the engine roared and the car sped out of control. The brake failed. Fortunately was able to avoid other parked cars and the car came to a stop in a ditch at the edge of the parking lot. The car may have traveled about 100 yds before coming to stop. The airbag was deployed and the damage to the front of the car may be extensive. Reporting this failure to the NHTSA in case there are other similar events happening with the 2016 Honda Cr-v model.

3 Brakes Failed problem of the 2021 Honda CR-V

Failure Date: 03/04/2021

The brand new Cr-v had a brake system failure. The brakes were applied upon coming to a red light at an intersection. The vehicle slowed down. It did not come to a complete stop. I applied more pressure to the brakes and the vehicle continued to move forward. I had to put the vehicle in park in order to stop the forward movement. I then took the vehicle out of park and continued to apply the brakes. However, the brakes did not function properly and the vehicle continued to move forward. I put the vehicle in park again. During this time, several error messages popped up. When the light turned green, I put the car in drive and was able to pull the car to the side of the road. The vehicle still would not brake properly and continued to move forward after the brakes were applied. I put the car in park. I then recorded the error messages that popped up. Several error messages came brake system problem, tire pressure monitor problem, brake hold system problem, power steering system (eps) problem, vehicle stability assist (vsa) problem, hill start assist problem, adaptive cruise control problem, lane keeping assist problem, collision mitigation system problem, road departure mitigation system problem.

4 Brakes Failed problem of the 2017 Honda CR-V

Failure Date: 01/27/2021

2017 Honda crv ex-l awd, purchased new Dec 2017, about 37k miles on it currently. A couple of days ago- on 1/27/2021- I was driving with my family (wife and two toddlers) on highway route 4 westbound in NJ going about 50mph with moderate traffic, when all of a sudden - brake system failure and all error messages appeared on the dashboard. I frantically tried to brake but the brake pedal was stiff and could not be depressed. I tried repeatedly to slam on the brakes cause the car in front of me was approaching fast and thankfully after several attempts the brakes were able to be depressed and I safely pulled over to the nearest strip mall parking lot with all the error messages flashing and brake system illuminated, I took photos and video on my phone and just made sure we were all ok. My wife and I were totally freaked out cause if we weren't able to stop we would definitely have rear ended the approaching vehicle in front of us at 50mph causing an accident. In the parking lot, we turned off the car and back on and the error messages disappeared and I was able to cautiously drive back home. We are very concerned about our safety in this vehicle if this happens again. Error messages have occurred once or twice in the past in inclement weather and a few of the driver assist features were not working due to the weather. But nothing like this has happened before with brake system failure / inability to depress the brake pedal and all errors flashing on the dashboard. If I bring it into the dealership I read online that if they're not able to replicate the errors then it doesn't exist. Please advise. Thank you.

9 Brakes Failed problem of the 2018 Honda CR-V

Failure Date: 06/29/2019

Computer break system and applied brakes failed to stop our Honda crv 2018 as we were exiting the santa fe opera in a slow moving line of cars down an incline. The brakes were applied at least three times and would not engage. Car began to accelerate. At this time we made the decision to "select a pine tree" as a way to stop the crv. This was done to prevent a possible chain reaction of rear end collisions to a dozen or more cars and possible injury to the occupants. The air bags deployed. Car was totaled by the insurance company.

10 Brakes Failed problem of the 2017 Honda CR-V

Failure Date: 12/14/2018

Radio locks up and then indicator lights on dash flash - brake failure, vsa failure, tpms failure, ldw failure, acc failure, lkas failure, cmbs failure. Had it at Honda service two times and they reinstalled software and did a hard reboot. Issue reared its head again Dec 14, took to Honda service with lights flashing for a computer read. Service scheduled for Dec 19 to look into issues and perform recall repair. Check engine light has been on since I took it in Dec 14. Car seems to run fine even with indicator lights flashing. Issue happened first time while on interstate going 70 mph. Secong time on backroad going 45 mph.

11 Brakes Failed problem of the 2017 Honda CR-V

Failure Date: 10/26/2018

A situation in which the dashboard lights show multiple system failures including failures of the rdm, cruise control, brakes and cmbs. This has happened twice, including a second time immediately after the dealer "fixed" the problem. The car has beed stopped but idling in both situation. I drove immediately to the dealership the first time and did not even leave the dealership the second time. An indication of a "brake system failure" is disconcerting even though there seems to be no affect on vehicle performance, other than these safety features being rendered inoperable.

13 Brakes Failed problem of the 2015 Honda CR-V

Failure Date: 07/09/2018

I was test driving the subject car in question from a Honda dealership (sport Honda in silver spring, MD). The car is certified pre-owned and during the test drive, we drove from the dealership to a nearby neighborhood. 5 minutes into the test drive within the neighborhood the brakes failed while we were driving at a relatively low speed (10-15 mph). More specifically, the brakes became very mushy and had to be depressed all the way to the floor in order to initiate braking. The following dash lights then became illuminated: tpms, traction control, and power steering. Upon returning the car to the dealership, the salesperson merely pointed out that the car is under warranty. No comment was made about how unsafe that situation was.

Tl the contact owns a 2018 Honda Cr-v. While driving 45 mph, the brakes failed and the vehicle stalled without warning. The abs indicator illuminated after the failure. On another occasion, while driving 25 mph, the brakes failed and the vehicle stalled without warning again. The vehicle was able to be restarted after a few moments. The vehicle was taken to darling's Honda Nissan Volvo (114 sylvan rd, bangor, me 04401, (207) 941-1460) where it was diagnosed that the engine software needed to be updated. The manufacturer was notified. The failure mileage was 2,485.

15 Brakes Failed problem of the 2017 Honda CR-V

Failure Date: 03/03/2018

Just as we were approaching the 4000ft descent to the valley floor, the instrument panel lit up with multiple warnings, the first being major brake failure. I stepped on the brake which was first soft, then immediately became hard to press down to stop the car. A small turnoff allowed me to get the car off the highway and stopped. Multiple warnings continued across the screen. Shut off the car to restart the computer, then restarted the car. Same messages. Checked exterior of car, tires, oil. All well. Towed to Honda dealership where it was tested for ebb and esb failure, ecu failure. Electronic booster was replaced and the brake system bled. Honda had the car for 7 days. Yesterday we picked up the Cr-v, having been told that it was repaired and ready to go. We drove away, but less than a mile from the dealer/service location, the exact same problem occurred - instrument panel lit up multiple warnings with brake the most emphatic. I was not braking when the warning came, but immediately braked to get off the road. Again the grinding sounds and difficulty pressing hard enough to stop the car. Car is back at the dealer for service. The problem is not fixed and we do not trust any repair at this point. We could have been seriously injured on the mountain highway and are not willing to risk our lives again.

16 Brakes Failed problem of the 2017 Honda CR-V

Failure Date: 12/28/2017

Honda crv 2017 collision system failed, led to brake fail and accident, feel unsafe driving now- on Dec 28th 2017, while driving my 2017 crv, I had to stop at stop sign, I tried to apply brakes but they failed completely as in no response by pressing the brake pedal. The collission mitigation system on Honda malfunctioned and messed with the braking, as a result the brakes failed and I hit the car in front. Now my question is what will Honda do in this case. I am also worried now for future, today I was driving at 10-15 mph in a small street and was alone in the car. What if my entire family was in the car and this happened on a freeway at 70-75 mph. My driver airbag was also deployed due to the collision today. I now feel unsafe driving my Honda crv 2017.

The contact mentioned that the failure mostly occurred during cold weather. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 650.

20 Brakes Failed problem of the 2017 Honda CR-V

Failure Date: 03/03/2017

Driving my 2017 crv ex home from work. Stopped at red light, foot on brake pedal. When the traffic signal turned green, I took my foot off the brake pedal, and a message came up on the dashboard screen "brake system failure". The engine was still running. I turned onto a side street and tried to depress the brake pedal, but it was frozen and the vehicle would not stop. I pulled into a parking lot and put the vehicle in 'park', and called the dealership where I leased the vehicle. The sales rep suggested I turn off the engine and restart it. I did that and all systems seemed to function properly. I later took my crv back to the dealer, and they did a diagnostic check but found no definitive problem. The technician could only say the computer indicated something had occurred but could say what, or why, or whether it might occur again. The service advisor said they could not find a problem, and everything seemed ok, and "have a nice day!" now I am anxious when I drive wondering if, or when, the brake system might fail again. Is it just my crv, or has this issue been reported by anyone else? this issue, should it occur again while driving in traffic, could result in a serious crash situation.

21 Brakes Failed problem of the 2016 Honda CR-V

Failure Date: 08/10/2016

On 8/10/2016, my wife was driving the vehicle slowly on a street with a downward slope towards a crossroad. My daughter (a kid) was sitting at the back seat. When she saw the traffic light was red, she tried to stop the vehicle by pressing the brake. But the brake did not work. She felt that she was pressing a rock. She was planning to go straight across the juncture, but in order to avoid running into the red light and a potential accident, she turned the vehicle right towards the street on her right side. Then she turned off the engine, and the vehicle stopped. It was a very scary experience for my wife. Clearly the brake failed. So the next morning (8/11) we took the vehicle to our local dealer, and asked them to check the brake. After checking, they told us that they could not replicate the incident, and could not do anything. Therefore I called american Honda motor CO. And requested that they send somebody to check the vehicle. After a long delay, their district services manager visited the local dealer, and instructed the dealership to bleed the brake fluid. This is not the right solution to the problem. If there is air in the brake fluid, you need to bleed the brake fluid. But that's not the problem my wife experienced when the incident happened. The problem was when she pressed the brake, she felt she was pressing a rock. The brake failed at that time. So we requested american Honda motor CO. To replace the brake system, but they declined on the basis that they could not replicate the incident. It has been one and a half months since we took the vehicle to the local dealer. American Honda motor CO. Did not solve the problem, and the dealer now asked me to take the vehicle home. How can we drive the vehicle again if there is a potential risk of this incident happening again. The brake may fail again, and somebody may die.

The vehicle was included in NHTSA campaign numbers: 15v370000 (air bags) and 15v320000 (air bags). The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 69,000.

26 Brakes Failed problem of the 2010 Honda CR-V

Failure Date: 12/15/2010

I purchased my crv from herson’s Honda on January 28, 2010 with 13 miles. I did my a1 maintenance service on June 14, 2010 with 4,676 miles and my b1 service was done on sept. 18, 2010 with 9,853 miles. Both services were completed at herson’s Honda service department. In Nov. I called herson’s Honda service depart. To report problems with my brake pedal sinking to the floor and sliding forward while I am waiting at a traffic light. Much to my surprise, the service depart. Informed me that it was not unusual with Hondas and they assured me that there is no need for concern. On the contrary, the problem became worse. On Dec. 14, my colleague and I were driving down a ramp in a parking garage when the brake pedal again failed and caused me considerable distress as I feared for my safety and that of my passenger. On Dec. 15, 2010, I took my crv to herson’s service depart. For inspection. They informed me that my brake fluid was contaminated, all the seals are swollen, it was unsafe to drive the car and it will cost me $5402. 00 to repair it. I asked to speak with the service manager to find out how my brake fluid got contaminated and when they could repair it since my car was only 12,566 miles and still under warranty. The service manager told me that they would not fix the problem with the brakes, suggesting it was my fault and that it was not covered under warranty. I requested for the phone number of american Honda and reported the problem. American Honda said that they will investigate and come back to me. To date my car has not been corrected and it has been with herson's Honda for over 30 days.

27 Brakes Failed problem of the 2008 Honda CR-V

Failure Date: 08/15/2010

Hydraulic sounding noise from brake pedal when car was stopped. Determined to be brake booster failure at 40k miles on 2008 Honda Cr-v. Dealer was "very surprised" and said they submitted to Honda - and that Honda would cover all but $100 of the repair. Honda has not returned my phone calls regarding this issue.

28 Brakes Failed problem of the 2002 Honda CR-V

Failure Date: 07/01/2007

While the engine is under load in a 2002 crv-ex Honda, if the driver pulses the brake pedal twice rapidly there is dramatic brake failure. In a panic stop, if the driver presses on both the gas pedal and the brake pedal in this timing, there would be no braking power. If the driver suggested the brakes failed, there would be no other evidence to support the claim without performing this test as the brakes will thereafter perform normally. I have demonstrated the failure to Honda mechanics with a privately owned car and they duplicated the occurrence in a dealer car. They have researched the Honda technical databases and could not find any references to the brake failure or a way to fix it.

29 Brakes Failed problem of the 2002 Honda CR-V

Failure Date: 01/10/2007

Rear brakes failed on our Honda crv at less than 22,000 miles.

The contact stated that when she applied the brakes they failed ,and the pedal went to the floor without resistance. The contact smell edsmoke and rubber. The contact stated that the police was called, and while waiting for a police office she did apply the foot to the brakes and the pedal was stuck in the same position from the crash. Complete brake failure twice-- pedal to floor. Problem not identified because dealer could not duplicate failure. Car not repaired and still dangerous.

32 Brakes Failed problem of the 2004 Honda CR-V

Failure Date: 12/30/2004

I was driving a new 2004 Honda Cr-v, stopped at a stop sign and then turned left onto a one way street. I saw an SUV in front of me and applied the brakes. Nothing happened. I hit the vehicle in the rear. That vehicle was knocked forward. I applied the brakes again. Nothing happened. I hit the vehicle again in the rear. The air bags deployed. I yanked my vehicle to the right, and stepped on the brakes again. Nothing happened. I was finally able to straighten and stop the vehicle by pulling as hard as I could on the parking brake--and even then, I had to pull it twice, as far down as I could get it. The other driver wasn't injured and her vehicle had damage on the rear side. My left knee hit the dash and my hands hit the wheel and dash--sustaining some injury, and my right arm was burned by the air bag. My vehicle was totalled. The mechanic who looked at my Honda said that he couldn't tell for certain if the brakes had failed, or if the throttle was stuck full open prior to the accident. After the accident, the throttle was stuck full open.
