2 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2015 Honda CR-V

Failure Date: 11/01/2016

Lost my power steering because Honda wraps the electronic power steering wiring harness in soy based material which attracts rodents to chew. As I've seen and heard seems to be a common problem. Honda wouldn't cover the cost or issue recall. Not even under the vehicle warranty. Fortunately I wasn't driving at the time I lost my steering or the situation could have been a lot worse for me or someone else if it caused an accident because I lost my steering. Definitely a safety issue that I think needs to be a recall because it's such a common problem.

3 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2009 Honda CR-V

Failure Date: 07/31/2015

On July 31, 2015, while exiting I-95 northbound crossing from the florida to georgia state line from high density high speed vacation traffic, my 2009 Honda Cr-v serpentine (drive) belt snapped. I immediately lost power steering and other functions associated with the drive serpentine belt. I was traveling at least 45 mph as I had just exited the highway; my knuckles were white I was grabbing the steering wheel so hard trying to assess, at high speed and with vehicles in front and behind me going the same speeds, how to bring the vehicle to a safe stop. My wife and two young girls were with me and I feared that me and my entire family were be seriously injured or killed. Subsequent inspection clearly identified a failed air-conditioning compressor clutch, that is the subject of Honda TSB 12-072 (service bulletin sb-10056005-7115), that my VIN is the subject of Honda's extended warranty associated with TSB 12-072. The compressor clutch caused the compressor to wind-up/damage the belt when it could not travel over the drive wheel of the compressor. The only warning we had, in hindsight, was we lost air conditioning earlier in our trip to florida and the ac was blowing warm air and there was a noise coming from the compressor area. My entire family was terrified by what happened here - this seems like a defect that presents an unreasonable risk to safety and should be a recall, not an extended warranty. I could have been killed. Had this happened on the highway 1 minute earlier, I could have been rear ended at high speed by car or, worse, truck. Given the numerous blog posts about this problem, and the Honda dealer service tech who said he said this is a common problem that can result in the drive belt getting destroyed by a failed ac compressor clutch, it seems that it should be a recall.

4 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2012 Honda CR-V

Failure Date: 05/20/2013

My 2012 Honda Cr-v (awd, ex trim) has, on 5 separate occasions, locked up the electric power steering (eps) system while driving in neighborhood streets (<25 mph) or parking lots. I am lucky this has not happened to me while driving on a city street or highway, but I fear it may happen at any moment. On today's occasion (the 5th out of 5, at 6372 miles), my car was sitting in bright sun all day, and when I drove it a few miles and parked in front of a store, I lost power steering right as I turned to park. The steering tended to harden up as I drove through the parking lot to find my spot. The eps indicator on the dash did not illuminate at all, even though my steering was lost. I had to wait 5 minutes before I was able to maneuver the vehicle into position. On page 355 of the owner's manual, a notice states that: "if you repeatedly turn the steering wheel at an extremely low speed, or hold the steering wheel on the full left or right position for a while, the system heats up. The system goes into a protective mode, and limits its performance. The steering wheel becomes harder and harder to operate. Once the system cools down, eps is restored. Repeated operation under these conditions can eventually damage the system. " what kind of steering is this? you tend to use your steering most when in parking lots or tight neighborhood streets. In conclusion, normal driving habits will "eventually damage the system. " I demand Honda to fully reimburse me for the remaining negative equity of the vehicle lease, and provide me a safe, paid-in-full rental vehicle (non-Honda please) to drive until my new Mini countryman arrives from europe in a few weeks. I find it appalling that a company known for "reliability" and "durability" would skimp on the most important aspect of driving: the steering.

5 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2010 Honda CR-V

Failure Date: 12/01/2011

Gears began to crunch and the car began to shake. Slowed down at a light and lost the power steering. Pulled over and the engine stalled. Could not re-start for 10 minutes. Engine then re-started, traveled approx. 10 meters and stalled. Re-started again - no further problems. 2 similar occurrences, 2 months apart. For the first event, the car went off the road. On each occasion the dealership stated they had checked everything and there was nothing wrong with the car. Took it for a second opinion. Dealership had not checked recall 11-001 (January, 2011). They checked it, but again found no issue.
