My vehicle has a know issue with Honda corporate with the variable cylinder management that has lead to 7 miss fires in 4 years. The frequent and excessive miss fires are caused by carbon and oil leaking through the piston rings. Honda has attempted to repair the piston rings but that repair was a fail. I’ve experienced a miss fire after the repair and now require another change to my spark plugs recommended by Honda. I filed a reimbursement case with Honda and was notified they will not resolve the issue or reimburse me for the excessive miss fires, spark plug and coils replaced due to their faulty know engine defect. They announced in July 2025 that they were extending the warranty to cover repairs related to engine misfires (dtcs p0301 through p0304) and will last for 10 years from the original purchase date or 150,000 miles. However they have denied my reimbursement after sending proof of miss fire work and payment.

Rod knock diagnosed and confirmed by dealership July 15, 2025. Van is currently at dealership and is available for inspection. I have paused work to allow Honda (case 15705425) and now this team the opportunity to diagnose and inspect first hand. Inspection and first hand visuals have only been completed by certified Honda dealerships. All warnings and my concerns are documented in our ros with Honda dealerships. When any light or reminder came on, I immediately took the van to Honda for service. Safety: slow starts and sluggish acceleration. Noise that was not normal. Out to eat 30 minutes away from home July 13 and van wouldn’t start. Dealership thought initially battery but then kept van overnight and nod rock confirmed. Also repaired back suspension. Additional details: problem has been reproduced and confirmed. Have been experiencing slow start, van not driving properly. Our family went out to lunch July 13 and van wouldn’t start. Waited handful of minutes and then started. Immediately took to dealership next day. Honda dealerships have done all servicing and repairs on this van. (I was told there are 55 repair totaling $22k for your research purposes. ) Honda notified me July 29, 2025 that they will not offer any assistance and/or goodwill because of the age and mileage of the van. Escalating case 15705425 up Honda chain - we have been very loyal to Honda. As of today, July 31, 2025: van sits at dealership; has been there since July 14, 2025. I have been advised not to drive the van, esp on the highway. I want to keep the van and want to drive it for many more years. Took very good care of it and followed all of Hondas recommendations for servicing. Just put brand new tires front suspension (March 2025) and rear suspension (July 2025) on it as well. Appreciate your investigation. I’m working diligently to do the right thing and allow the proper people time to investigate the van before any work begins on the engine.

Vehicle is idling rough. Took to dealership and they said it has an obvious misfire. Over a total of six days they had it and performed diagnostics that were requested by Hondas tech line. The dealership told me that they were informed by Hondas tech line that is just how that vechile is. I got referred to Hondas corporate and spoke with them. I was then requested to bring the vehicle back to the dealership for further testing. They had it less than 3 hours. And again I was told that the vehicle misfiring is just a characteristic of the vehicle. I’m concerned about my vehicle misfiring and Honda not wanting to fix it. I don’t want to be driving down the road with my family and have an engine failure. Issue has been ongoing for a few weeks.

The auto on/off while idling will randomly fail. The car stalls, all emergency lights turn on and the car won’t start for a few minutes. This has occurred at stop lights and in traffic after coming to a complete stop and the car turns off when idling. The car is only 6 months old. The first occurrence happened at the 3 month mark and has become more persistent. I’ve had my battery checked and that was not an issue.
I bought a 2018 Honda Odyssey new. When the recall for the fuel pump came out, I had it completed on the emergency basis because it said if you had been experiencing the engine cutting out, to call and get it completed soon. I had had issues with the engine cutting out. Recently, I noticed a loud engine rumbling and rough noise during idling and acceleration. I took it to a Honda dealership, and they diagnosed a failing high-pressure fuel pump that required immediate replacement. There were no warning lights. The most frustrating part is that so many other 2018 Odyssey owners are reporting the exact same issue. It’s all over forums and reddit — people with Odysseys from around this year are dealing with premature high-pressure fuel pump failures. This is clearly not an isolated case — it's a widespread defect that Honda has yet to acknowledge. While Honda recalled the low-pressure fuel pump, they’ve ignored the high-pressure pump — even though it presents serious drivability and safety concerns. I am being forced to pay $1,775 out-of-pocket at a Honda dealership to replace this failed part. I’m urging NHTSA to investigate this pattern and hold Honda accountable. This is not normal wear and tear — it’s a systemic failure that deserves a recall and reimbursement for affected owners.
I was stopped at a red light for a long time. The idle on/off feature engaged, turning the engine off as expected. However, the engine would not turn back on; the vehicle completely stalled. It took several attempts to get the vehicle to turn back on. I was on a very busy 5-lane road with my child in the car. This was very dangerous as we were in a middle lane. We would not be able to safely exit the vehicle. I was extremely worried we would be rear-ended.
Honda has been serviced at Honda of ames #190 since 2022. 2023 - issues with the engine stalling when it goes into idle mode at a stop. September 2023 – contacted Honda of ames, IA dealer. They indicated it’s the battery which will need replaced. Took the car to interstate battery on 9/26/2023 where it tested at 12. 5 volts out of possible 12. 6 volts. Then took the car to dealer who insisted it was an issue with the battery. Replaced battery for $391. Problem continued. In 2024 there was a recall a known issue with the engine idle functionality requiring a software update. Took the vehicle in for the software update. Complained to the dealer that I unnecessarily spent $390 on new battery when that wasn’t the issue. They refused to refund any money. Problem persisted. On 5/21/2025 the car was brought into dealership for 100k service. I complained again that the auto-idle feature still stalling. Was told that it's not a universal known problem, they don’t have a fix that he’s aware of other than to check the battery. I explained we’ve been through this before and brought up sept 2023 battery situation. He stated that the quick/handheld battery testers are not reliable; repair shops have “the big testers in the back” that are more reliable – that is what they will test my battery on. I asked if they could turn off the feature permanently and was told no. When car was ready I was told that the battery life tested fine. They did a software upgrade and I will need to drive it and just see if the stall issue continues. He repeated that it’s not a “universal known problem” and there was nothing further he could do. 7/5/2025 – the auto-idle has stalled twice since the service on 5/21/2025. Stalling in an intersection, at a red light, bottom of an off-ramp, etc. I s a serious and highly concerning safety issue.

Intermittent hesitation to accelerate.
I bought a 2018 Honda Odyssey ex-l with around 80,000 miles. Not long after, I noticed a loud engine vibration and rough noise during idling and acceleration. I took it to a Honda dealership, and they diagnosed a failing high-pressure fuel pump that required immediate replacement. There were no warning lights or messages — just a sudden failure. The most frustrating part is that so many other 2018 Odyssey owners are reporting the exact same issue. It’s all over forums and reddit — people with Odysseys from around this year are dealing with premature high-pressure fuel pump failures, often between 70,000–90,000 miles. This is clearly not an isolated case — it's a widespread defect that Honda has yet to acknowledge. While Honda recalled the low-pressure fuel pump, they’ve ignored the high-pressure pump — even though it presents serious drivability and safety concerns. I was forced to pay $1,273 out-of-pocket at a Honda dealership to replace this failed part. I’m urging NHTSA to investigate this pattern and hold Honda accountable. This is not normal wear and tear — it’s a systemic failure that deserves a recall and reimbursement for affected owners.
High pressure fuel pump makes loud noice. Fuel line vibrates. Check engine light on, shows error code low fuel pressue.
The auto idle stop system causes the engine to stall or fail to restart after being stopped. The error that comes on sometimes says "collision mitigation system problem" on the dashboard, or sometimes "transmission problem. Apply parking brake when parked", but either way it happens when I release the brake to drive again after a stop when the auto idle stop comes on. To fix, I'll have to turn off the car and turn it back on.
Engine has been running very rough the last 20k miles, and east coast Honda in surfside beach, SC noted engine bearing wear prior to the rough engine performance during a service visit in may 2023. In June-July 2025 driving on interstate 95 driving between washington d. C. And surfside beach, SC, we went to pass and the engine cut rpm's drastically and went into 'limp mode' nearly causing an accident with the sudden decrease in speed. We have asked american Honda customer service [800-999-1009] to provide an engine evaluation but they have declined and have stated our VIN is not included in the rod bearing recall/TSB. We did mentioned about the further investigation for 2018 Honda Odyssey's but was advised any action we take would not be compensated since the vehicle is out of warranty by date and mileage (73,000 miles).
Upon coming to a complete stop on the freeway, the idle engine feature stopped the engine. Upon letting go of the gas, the engine wouldn't restart and the electrical systems in the car malfunctioned showing a restart of the car would be needed. After trying to restart the car, the engine wouldn't turn over. After pushing the off button and starting the car again, it finally restarted. This created a hazardous situation as there was the potential for the car behind us to rear end us since we were at a complete stop on the freeway. After the software update, this happened again at a right turn on a local street.
Auto stop start feature caused car to stall at a traffic light. Could didn’t not restart when brake pedal was released. Car did not restart until door was opened and key was cycled several times.
I’m reporting a repeat engine misfire on my 2013 Honda Odyssey (p0303 – cylinder 3). Honda repaired this issue in 2018 under service bulletin 13-081, which followed the soto v. Honda settlement. Now in 2025, the exact same failure has returned—same code, same cylinder, same symptoms. Honda issued a new bulletin, 25-061 (June 17, 2025), covering 2013–2016 Odysseys with misfire codes p0301–p0304. It extends powertrain warranty coverage to 10 years or 150,000 miles, and includes a grace period through Jan 31, 2026 for any affected vehicle, regardless of mileage or age. My vehicle meets all criteria, yet Honda refuses full coverage, saying my VIN isn’t flagged and they can’t override that due to NHTSA restrictions. This seems inconsistent. The bulletin clearly applies to my make, model, year, and exact engine fault. The misfire affects drivability and long-term engine health. I’ve been a loyal Honda customer, servicing the vehicle at authorized dealerships and covering related repairs myself. In addition to the engine problem, I’ve experienced electrical instability due to a faulty battery cable, which required replacement. I’ve also had to address a damaged transmission drain bolt—caused during prior dealer maintenance—which complicated fluid service and added cost. I’m asking NHTSA to review whether more vins should be included under this bulletin, and whether Honda is limiting support too narrowly despite formally acknowledging the defect. I’m providing invoices, diagnostics, estimates and service records to support this including the video inspection.

On June 23, 2025, while driving my wife to the rdu airport, our Odyssey's engine failed to restart after an auto idle stop (ais) at a busy intersection in greensboro. Instead of starting, the dashboard displayed a collision mitigation system problem alert, the drive ("d") indicator light started flashing, and then the dashboard displayed a "shifting to park: apply brake pedal" message. We were stranded at a busy stoplight, at the front of a dedicated left-turn lane, unable to drive or shift to park as instructed. The only way to resolve the issue was to hold the start/stop button for several seconds to shut the vehicle off. And the vehicles behind us had to swerve around us because our malfunctioning vehicle was blocking the lane. This problem has recurred semi-regularly since June 23, forcing us to manually disable the auto idle stop feature on every drive to prevent being stranded in traffic. An independent mechanic found no stored diagnostic codes but identified relevant Honda technical service bulletins (23-008 and 23-009) addressing similar ais failures. A Honda service center misdiagnosed the issue as a faulty battery, but subsequent testing by the independent shop confirmed the battery was in excellent working order. The actual auto idle stop malfunction remains undiagnosed. The vehicle and its auto idle stop system remain available for inspection. This issue appears to be part of the ongoing NHTSA engineering analysis ea25-004.
Piston failure - vehicle has always been properly maintained by Honda dealer and we have adhered to their suggestions for maintenance/repair. It has been driven in a safe and legal manner. There is no reason why this should have happened under the conditions without a defect. Vehicles currently at regal Honda, lakeland FL incurring $6000 worth of repairs.

2021 Odyssey exl shuts off completely in traffic stop and go conditions. Happened three times in a 2 week period. Twice in city roads at traffic stop light and once in highway when the cars are in stop / go mode due to heavy traffic. Engine switches off completely and puts itself in "p" mode, all light comes on as if in accessory mode, radio switches off, all doors unlocked. To get going, the driver had to press brake pedal and start the car again (via engine start /stop button). This issue started in the car at 43k miles. Never had any issue with mine before that. But it is scary especially the engine switch off in highway and traffic stop light.

There is a recall on other 18 model year vans for the rod bearing failure. This happened to me on my van and it has had regular oil changes and has around 139000 miles on it. This could have been catastrophic for the ones around me if I was driving on the interstate and the bearing gave out and hurt my family due to the engine seizing. The vehicle has not yet been inspected due to this just happening. I am not the only one with this model year having this issue and my VIN not being covered by the existing recall. There were no warnings prior to the issue. Oil was always clean and changed on time. This vehicle has a good history report and records.
Check engine light came on while driving and engine making rattling noise. Stopped vehicle and restarted with difficulty starting and loss of engine power. Towed to nearest Honda dealer and diagnosed with cylinder 3 rod bearing damage. Engine replaced under Honda extended warrenty with used engine per warrenty company preference. Called Honda customer service to report the incident. They confirmed my VIN was not included on the recall for vehicles of the same year with similar issues. They confirmed over the phone that they would file a NHTSA report on my behalf, but I have not seen the report on this website.
Bought our 2022 Honda Odyssey in November of 2021. Vehicle has the idle/stop feature. That feature never worked properly. Always said, warming up or charging and didn't work. Recently, June 7, 2025 my wife driving was at the light with the stop feature activated, she took her foot off the brake for it to start up and it was shifting weird. Happened several times. On June 11, 2025, I was at a light and when I let my foot of the brake for the feature to start the vehicle, the vehicle stalled and I couldn't get it in gear. Eventually it went in gear. I could've gotten into an accident. I called the dealership on June 11, 2025 to make an appointment. After seeing something else on the news about a recall, I decided to look up my issue. I found that there is an investigation and lawsuits about it. I had no idea. I had no idea a letter was sent to owners. I never received it!! I looked at my service records and on February 15, 2024, at an oil change, the dealership fixed a recall per Honda for auto start and says updated. My vehicle is still having issues.

The contact owns a 2019 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that while starting the vehicle, the contact heard a ticking sound coming from the engine compartment. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the rod bearings had failed, and the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 103,000.
Automatic idle stop function causes car to stall in the middle of roadways. Idle is initiated when car comes to a complete stop at intersections, traffic lights, etc. Instead of rolling back on, engine stalls and brake seizes up, causing us to block traffic in the middle of roadways, intersections, traffic lights, etc. Car does not restart when power button is pushed. Only solution that has worked is to completely turn car off, open driver door and pretend to be ending trip by getting out, closing the door, walking away so car locks, waiting 30 seconds, then reapproaching the car and starting over from the beginning. This obviously causes major issues in the middle of roadways. On one occasion, no solutions worked, the brake pedal completely seized, and the battery had to be jumpstarted, despite the fact that it was a fairly new and undamaged battery. Problem persists even after changing battery.
Vehicle will fail to restart after auto idle stop engages at times. Dealership performed reset, but issue continued afterwards . Safety issue due to delayed acceleration. Has been brought in twice for this issue with no resolution.
While driving, the battery indicator light illuminated. Suddenly, the power turned off. The vehicle could be steered and brakes used, only. Then, as quickly as the power turned off, it restored and momentarily powered the accelerator. Then the power stopped again. The lights within the cabin and on the dash flickered and chimed like they were possessed. Then nothing. When the power would flicker on, the engine/transmission would "catch" and jerk the vehicle. Fortunately, I coasted to my residence without an auto accident. I reported this issue to williamsburg Honda who will address the issue tomorrow when the vehicle is towed there. I was at risk along with my two school-aged children for a deadly auto accident since the power to the vehicle was lost. I have to use another vehicle and am uncertain of my trust for the van with myself and my family after this terrifying incident.

2021 Odyssey exl the electric parking brake 'issue' warning comes on while driving and collision mitigation warning / lane assist switches off and flashes in console; when this happens the car continues to run but the dashboard warning lights comes up for parking brake / collision warning and or lane assist. It gets cleared after I turn on/off the car couple of times and drive for approximately 5 miles. Those features had to be turned on manually, once the car is in parked mode, again. The issue started in the car at around 48k miles. Never had any issue with it before that.
Nothing has happened yet, but I have been unable to get the connecting rod bearings inspected per the Honda safety recall notice. I contacted the Honda dealer in January of 2025 to have the bearings inspected, as well as to have the fuel pump replaced (also under recall). I wanted them both done at the same time. I set up an appointment for may 21st of 2025, because that date was the first mutually available date for the dealer and me. Later in the day, on may 21st, I got a call from the service department that my fuel pump was done, but they did not do the bearing inspection. I went to pick up the vehicle at the dealership only to find that the check engine light was on, so I had to leave the vehicle overnight so that the check engine light problem could be corrected. It was then that I was told that they could not do the connecting rod bearing inspection because the procedure requires a "special tool" and Honda had to send it to them. I find this strange because of the number of months that went by, from when I first contacted the dealership until the appointment date, and I thought that they would have been better prepared to complete the work. I was also informed by Honda that all of the parts necessary to do the bearing inspection were available. I received that notification on September 4th of 2024. I also find it strange that, out of nearly 250,000 affected vehicles, I am the first to request this service at this dealership. I was not told how long it would be until the dealership service department would receive the tool. In the recall notice from Honda, a connecting rod failure could potentially result in ". . . A fire, crash, or injury". That's the risk. I was told by Honda to continue driving the vehicle if I was not having any symptoms of failure. I have had no indications, but I would like to have this recall taken care of as soon as possible.
A poorly designed engine leads to misfires even after proper maintenance, increasing the chances of a crash. On Monday, may 12th, 2025, the mil indicator came on and began flashing while I was driving. The engine began to misfire so violently that the vehicle was nearly undriveable; acceleration was dangerously poor. After I got home, I used a obd-ii code scanner and pulled a "p0301 - cylinder 1 misfire" dtc. Then, I did some research, and found that a poorly designed engine causes oil to burn inside the cylinders and foul the spark plugs. I inspected the spark plugs and found multiple fouled plugs, specifically on the cylinders on which Honda's variable cylinder management activates on, cylinders 1-4. I replaced all six spark plugs, and the issue went away, as expected. Photos of the fouled plugs are attached. Honda is aware of this problem, as it recently extended the warranty of the engine in this vehicle. I received a letter on July 31, 2025, titled, "warranty extension: 2013-15 pilot & 2013-17 Odyssey mil comes on with dtcs p0301 thru p0304. " (see uploaded file. ) spark plug inspection and replacement is part of the repair, in addition to a partial engine rebuild and software update. However, the warranty extension only applies *after* the misfiring has started, which is no help to the safety of this vehicle, as the issue can start at any moment while driving. Furthermore, the warranty extension only adds an extra six months to many of the affected vehicles. Therefore, any vehicle this extension applies to is an unsafe vehicle unless the safety issue already occurred and was repaired. If the issue presents itself after this time period, the owner is left with an unremedied vehicle and with an expensive repair bill.

The contact then continued driving 20-25 mph. The contact stated that the vsa (vehicle stability assist) and tpms warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to auto zone, where it was diagnosed with battery voltage, brake sensor, ecm and pcm failures. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 238,133.

I am filing this complaint to report a recurring and costly defect involving the starter system in my Honda Odyssey. The vehicle has been experiencing starter failures every few months, requiring repeated repairs and part replacements. Each time the starter fails, I am left stranded without warning, creating a serious safety hazard, especially when the failure occurs in public areas, on road shoulders, or during emergencies. The defect has caused extreme inconvenience, financial strain, and raised serious concerns about the reliability and safety of this vehicle. Given the frequency and cost of the problem, I believe this constitutes a systemic defect that should be investigated for a potential recall or manufacturer responsibility. I urge the NHTSA to thoroughly investigate this matter to determine whether this ongoing issue with the starter poses a broader public safety concern and qualifies for regulatory or enforcement action.
Subject: urgent vehicle safety concern – sudden malfunction and safety risk on [xxx], at approximately [xxx, I experienced a traumatic incident when my vehicle unexpectedly malfunctioned while I was driving home. After making a left turn on a green signal from [xxx] toward the community, the car suddenly stalled. By god's grace, I managed to cross woodbridge avenue before stopping, avoiding a major traffic obstruction. However, it came to a complete stop in the middle of the street, creating a hazardous situation. After a brief pause, the car moved approximately 10 yards before stopping again, becoming completely immobile in the middle of a public road. Attempts to jump-start the battery failed. All warning lights turned on, but the engine would not start. The vehicle could not be restarted or moved under its own power. 911 was called, and police responded promptly to the scene. With the assistance of my wife, police officers, and local neighbors, a tow company was called to remove the vehicle from the roadway. It was then towed and parked in a nearby lot. This incident was highly traumatic and posed a serious threat to my safety, my family's safety, and the safety of the public. Diagnostics and expert assessments indicate the issue may be related to a manufacturer defect, which is deeply concerning given that this is a new vehicle. At this time, the vehicle is no longer drivable. I am seeking urgent assistance to resolve this matter with the manufacturer and to ensure that other consumers are not exposed to similar risks.
