The 2019 Honda Odyssey experienced an engine failure while driving on the highway in the chicago area in illinois. The engine began knocking, then failed completely. It was towed to a local Honda dealer, where the technician noted visible metallic flecks in the oil once drained. No check engine or other warnings occurred prior to the failure.
Since purchasing this vehicle brand new off the truck, we have had it back at the dealership multiple times ,we've taken it for the plug in console not working for firesticks, a sensor not working on the passenger side door and claiming it to be open, the sliding door not working correctly, the doors locking and refusing to unlock, battery draining, ac not working, stalling, dying at lights, slamming on its own brakes with nothing around, transmission acting weird, it putting itself in to sport mode, transmission sticking, doors not unlocking or not locking, sensors going off, random errors on dash, screens not working, car play not working, suspension popping, steering being wiggly and loose, brakes squeeling. Today we were told by the dealership "he saw the damage that is resulting in needing to replace the steering column. With that being said, it is considered a safety hazard to drive this vehicle with the condition the steering column is in. " this is after multiple times of saying nothing is wrong to we have to charge the battery to you need a new starter to this.

Auto start/stop system engaged, when given gas the engine did not start. Battery light came on and had to turn off and on the vehicle to start the engine. Ea25004 - investigation [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
Life-threatening acceleration lag: the vehicle is experiencing severe power loss during critical driving moments, for example, while entering intersections or attempting to re-accelerate into moving traffic. When I attempt to speed up, the engine fails to respond initially, leaving the vehicle stranded in the path of cross-traffic. The engine finally engages only because I am forced to floor the accelerator pedal out of necessity, which then causes the tires to squeal when power eventually returns. Intermittent starting issues: the vehicle frequently fails to start smoothly on the first attempt; a known symptom associated with the fuel pump impeller deformation described in recall 23v-858. Vcm shudder and hesitation: I am experiencing the distinct vibration and rhythmic shudder associated with the variable cylinder management system. This symptom is most prominent during deceleration or coasting; specifically, when I lift my foot off the accelerator without applying the brakes, the system triggers a noticeable shudder as it incorrectly manages cylinder engagement/deactivation. Suspected catalytic failure (codes p0420/p0430): both catalytic converters are exhibiting inefficiency codes simultaneously, which are highly atypical and occur well before the expected component lifespan. This clearly points to upstream defects. Specifically, the catalytic substrate has been poisoned by carbon and phosphorus deposits from the documented oil-burning defect and has suffered thermal damage due to the improper fuel mixtures caused by the defective high-pressure fuel pump (recall 23v-858).
A small "knocking" noise was noticed a couple weeks or so ago in my 2018 Honda Odyssey. Noise got progressively worse. Vehicle was taken to the Honda dealership for assessment/repair. Was notified by a service technician that a rod knock was present on the lower end of the engine and that the engine needed to be replaced. Options were: new engine, used engine, or trade in my vehicle towards purchase of a new one. All maintenance records are meticulous and performed by a certified Honda service department.

Repeated misfires despite repairs at a certified Honda dealership. The van has been under service since the end of August 2025. The vehicle is power off and shut down while driving or cause significant engine/transmission shuddering and stalling. I have had my kids in the vehicle when this has happened on a highway. All service records have been done by certified servicers.

Vehicle experiences engine stalling and failure to restart at intersections when the auto idle stop (ais) feature is engaged. This creates an immediate life-safety hazard as the vehicle becomes non-functional in live traffic. This has occurred 2 times. Once on surface streets and once on the highway in stop-and-go traffic. This issue persists despite service bulletins 23-008 and 23-009. Honda corporate and Honda dealership refusing to cover the repair. Separately, during a 37-day repair attempt (Jan 22 – March 2, 2026), autonation Honda chandler admitted the vehicle was sold with an 'incorrect' battery type (lead acid instead of required agm), which caused electrical instability. The dealership attempted a repair on Feb 13, but the vehicle failed to start again on Feb 11 during a pickup attempt. The dealer has since refused to provide accurate service records or further communication. The vehicle remains unsafe to drive as it continues to stall randomly.
The contact owns a 2024 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that while stopped and using the auto start/stop feature, the vehicle failed to restart as designed. While attempting to restart the vehicle, the battery warning light flashed on the instrument panel. The vehicle restarted after several minutes. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 41,000.

Our 2018 Honda Odyssey (elite) has been diagnosed by our local Honda dealer with engine failure due to rod knock (rod bearing failure). This vehicle is well maintained with only 72,500 miles when the issue became noticeable. The dealer has verbally quoted $8,800 to replace the engine with another used engine, which I refuse to pay given the relatively low mileage and age of this vehicle (and history of other costly inexcusable issues). I opened a complaint/goodwill case (#16188784) with Honda corporate, which was denied. This Honda Odyssey was our primary family vehicle (the only vehicle we can all travel together in), and it is now siting in our garage completely inoperable. Honda America's lack of care here is beyond frustrating.
Engine has a rod knock problem at 72,000, miles. Vehicle will likely need a full engine replacement.
My 2025 Honda Odyssey features a standard auto idle stop system designed to improve fuel efficiency by shutting off the engine when braking to a stop. While intended to restart upon releasing the brake, my 2025 models have reported issues with failing to restart or stalling.
My Odyssey has a no-restart issue related to auto idle stop. Engineer did not restart at red light and I had to push the button twice. We were caught in traffic and was not safe.
Idle stop failure. This has occurred many times. Presents itself failure to restart upon releasing the brake. Rough restart. Sometimes have to completely turn off car and restart.
While driving, the vehicle loses power, hesitates, and jerks, then stalls and shuts off without warning, especially in extreme heat and stop-and-go traffic. The failure occurs more frequently when the fuel level drops below approximately half a tank. After stalling, the vehicle will not restart until it cools down for 20–30 minutes, then temporarily operates normally before the issue repeats. Warning symptoms prior to failure include loss of acceleration, hesitation, and engine overheating. A fuel pump–related fault code has been detected. The vehicle has stalled while driving, creating a serious safety risk due to sudden loss of power in traffic. This condition matches NHTSA recall 23v858000, which states the fuel pump may fail and cause engine stall while driving. The fuel system component believed to be involved is available for inspection upon request. The issue has occurred multiple times and is reproducible under similar conditions.

2018 Odyssey exl engine seized up at 111k miles. There's now a bunch of metal shavings in the oil. The engine will not turn over.
My car needs a complete engine replacement due to "rod knock" or "bottom-end failures. " it's my understanding that some Honda vehicles were recalled due to this (recall 23v-751). And that there were other vehicles having issues beyond the scope of this recall (query rq24013). I'm disappointed because my Honda mechanic and independent mechanic have cited my impeccable service records and have told me there is nothing more I could have done. This feels fraudulent.
Car doesn't start, has needed to be jumped almost 20 times in a year. Auto start stop has shut the car off in intersections.
Over the past month, I have experienced several incidents where my 2025 Honda Odyssey’s auto idle stop (ais) system failed to restart the engine after stopping at traffic lights. Each time, the engine did not turn back on when I released the brake, leaving me stalled in traffic and prompting error messages on the dashboard. There is currently no way for owners to permanently turn off this feature. When I took my vehicle to the dealership, I was told my starter was already having issues despite the car having less than 10,000 miles on it. This ongoing problem has made me concerned for my safety and the reliability of my vehicle.
When the auto idle stop is engaged, I have now had 3 instances of the engine completely stalling when at a stop. Not only has the engine stalled, but I have difficulty getting the engine to restart. It has been very scary, as it has left me disabled at busy intersections while I struggle to get my van to start so I can move and pray nobody hits me while I sit there. I've even had to open the driver's door to get the van to restart. We've made a habit of manually turning the auto idle stop feature off every time we drive it. This problem has not occurred when the feature is turned off. The first incident of this was several months ago, and I already took it to my local dealer but they couldn't replicate the issue and did nothing about it.
Vehicle shuts down and will not restart. So far this has happened three times. After a long delay, took foot off gas, held brake and pushed start and would not start. On third attempt vehicle was very labored on start.
My 2025 Honda Odyssey has been completely shutting off after the stop-start shuts the engine off. When the car actually “stalls” is when I let off the brake and it’s time to start going. Then I hear a ding, the dash lights come on, and I have to frantically hit the ignition button. This is happening at stop lights where there is the risk for other cars to safely go when the light turns green. I have to completely shut off the car and restart the engine while traffic is going on green.
My 2022 Honda Odyssey experienced a sudden catastrophic engine failure at approximately 154,000 miles while driving under normal conditions. The failure involved the vehicle’s engine and resulted in a loud knocking noise followed by loss of engine power and the vehicle becoming inoperable. The Honda dealership diagnosed the engine as having internal engine failure with metal contamination present in the oil, indicating severe internal engine damage. Based on the symptoms and the diagnosis, the failure appears consistent with possible connecting rod or connecting rod bearing failure. The failed engine remains installed in the vehicle and should be available for inspection upon request. Prior to the failure there were no warning lights or messages, and the oil pressure warning light never illuminated. The vehicle had proper oil levels and no indication of low oil pressure before the failure occurred. A sudden internal engine failure that causes loss of engine power while driving presents a safety concern because it can occur without warning and may leave the driver unable to maintain speed or safely maneuver in traffic, particularly at highway speeds. The problem has been confirmed by a Honda dealership, which documented the condition as internal engine failure with metal contamination in the oil and advised that the engine must be replaced. The estimated repair cost exceeds $6,000. The manufacturer has been notified of the failure through a customer assistance case, but the vehicle has not been physically inspected by the manufacturer, police, or insurance representatives. This complaint is being submitted to document the sudden internal engine failure and possible connecting rod bearing failure in case similar failures are occurring in other vehicles equipped with the same engine design.

I am getting a failing fuel injector that is not covered in Hondas opentsb. I am unsure how it was determined that only VIN are covered when it is the same engine for all 18 &19s. Honda is denying work but reporting because many others are having same problem and not covered on an Odyssey forum. I believe it is an issue with more than the vins in the extension. Recommending that nysb collect data on all Odyssey and see the failures.
Engine turns off by itself at stop. Auto idle stop was not turned on. It also happened when I pressed the reverse button. When it turns off by itself, I have to turn it back on and put it back into gear. It happened 4 times today.
Idle stop engine turned engine off at a stop light. When the foot was removed from the brake pedal the engine struggled to start up. It took several attempts to get the engine to start up. This has occurred before and the dealer replaced the battery. However, it is now happening again. There were no warnings .
I own a 2018 Honda Odyssey elite. While driving to er for my daughter engine started making weird knocking sounds, when I stopped at a red light to turn left off the interstate Odyssey just died and began to smoke. My daughter and I were advised to get out of the vehicle for safety reasons, due to smoke. There was no warning lights or any other indication that the Odyssey had a problem. 911 was contacted fire and police responded, it was determined that engine reached max temperature. Odyssey was towed to Honda dealer for diagnostics, it was determined that connecting rod bearing was bad and long block needed to be replaced, starter also imploded and needed to be replaced. I contacted manufacturer to ask for a "goodwill repair" due to NHTSA campaign number 23v751000. Per manufacturer Honda would not offer any assistance for the engine repair even though recall matches exact part affected in the recall. All regular maintenance oil changes, 100,000 mile service, new tires, have been performed on the Odyssey. I can provide receipts and records. The failure mileage was 167,384.
After driving for 2 hrs in single digit temperatures I entered the on ramp to interstate freeway. I lost power, couldn’t accelerate further and the check engine light was flashing. I pulled over on the 4 lane interstate, turned off my car and restarted. Cel went away. This is the 2nd time in 2 winters this has occurred during cold weather. Both on exit/entrance ramps when trying to accelerate after turning with traffic behind me. This can only be reproduced in specific situations and diagnostics are not stored. Honda has a service bulletin on this issue 24-085. I feel it should be covered on all vehicles, regardless of warranty status due to the safety risk.

The contact owns a 2018 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated while driving 60-62 mph, there was an abnormal sound coming from the front of the vehicle, and the vehicle lost drive power. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The contact pulled over to the side of the road. The vehicle failed to restart and was towed to tire choice auto service centers, where it was diagnosed and determined that one of the engine banks had failed. The mechanic determined that the engine needed to be replaced with a used or brand-new engine. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact related the failure to NHTSA campaign number: 23v751000 (engine and engine cooling); however, the VIN was not included. The dealer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that he would receive a call back later. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that a case would be filed, and the contact would receive a call back later. The failure mileage was approximately 132,000.
I was stopped at a stop light and the idle stop function activated, turning off the engine, as designed. However, when the light turned green and I released the brake, the vehicle stalled out. I had to completely turn off the vehicle and restart it.
My vehicle repeatedly and unexpectedly shifts into neutral while in drive, causing a sudden loss of power in traffic. This has happened multiple times without any input from me and has nearly caused a crash.
A rattle noise when initially pressing the accelerator pedal. When starting a vehicle, I had to press the start button multiple times. Kept stalling. All the lights on a dashboard started flashing. Saying check engine! we took it to the dealership and they confirmed engine problems. This was their diagnosis: confirmed concern - found noise coming from engine internally due to cyl no 2 rod knocking - oil heavily contaminated w/metal particles - recommend engine replacement! mileage is only 93805.
2019 Honda Odyssey (VIN: [xxx] ) - fuel injector failure at 51,000 miles, November 2025. Cost: $1,260. Known manufacturing defect: Honda service bulletins 20-100, 21-002, 22-002 acknowledge widespread fuel injector failures in 2018-2019 Odysseys caused by debris from manufacturing process. Honda extended warranty to 10 years/150,000 miles for certain vins. My VIN excluded despite identical failure. Evidence: (1) same symptoms/codes as covered vehicles (2) fuel pump replaced under recall same visit - proves manufacturing defects (3) proper maintenance with receipts (4) dealer admitted injectors shouldn't fail at this mileage (5) hundreds of similar complaints online Honda denied coverage: american Honda denied goodwill because I don't have dealership service records. This makes no sense - manufacturing debris in injectors isn't caused by where you get oil changes. Safety issue: sudden power loss, multiple warning lights, stalling risk while driving. Request: investigate why Honda excludes certain vins from warranty coverage for acknowledged manufacturing defect. Require expansion of coverage and reimbursement program. Pattern of defects (fuel pump recall + injector failure at 51k miles) indicates quality control problems. Thousands of owners affected. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
The idle stop feature sometimes fails to reengage / restart the engine. One time, the van failed to restart and the vehicle completely locked up while I was in an exit ramp to the freeway. I had to turn the van off and turn it back on to get it to shift into drive and go. Similar events have happened a number of times, since the summer of 2025. We have taken it to the dealer twice now, and have been told to "monitor" it. We found the NHTSA report #ea25004 and believe this is the issue we are experiencing. Occasionally, the idle stop will restart, but it's a very violent restart (car sputters and chokes in restart, sounds like it might stall). The car will make a warning light flash and give an error message, but it always clears too quickly to read it.
Car would randomly die while I was driving, causing my children and I to be in severe danger in the middle of a busy road multiple times.
