Engine Shut Off Without Warning Problems of Honda Odyssey

Sometimes (no discernible pattern) after stopping at a red light or a stop sign, the car shuts off and will not restart for several minutes. The Honda service center at the dealer where we leased the car said they have heard of similar problems with newer model Honda Odysseys and Honda pilots but there has been no formal recall. This is a clear safety hazard. The battery has been tested and it is fine. The mechanics cannot find anything wrong with the car.

I was driving the car in heavy traffic when the engine shutdown and was almost run into by several cars behind and beside the car. The cars engine has been determined to be seized up even though there was no warning of either low oil pressure or high engine temp or any engine malfunction indicator. The engine has been regularly maintained. This cold have been a disaster had the driver of the vehicle had not taken heroic measures to get the vehicle safely pulled over and stopped. This action could have caused the driver and possibly the other vehicles beside and behind serious injuries and or possibly a fatality. I have done some research on this issue and there are others that this has happened to. Something needs to be done about this issue before someone loses their life over it.

First incident in 2018, the minivan came to a quick complete stop unnecessarily. A car in front of me had made a quick turn, I was not in danger of running into the car. I had a driver behind me honking his horn. I could have been rear-ended. Next incident occurred this month, March, 2019. Driving down a street, 25 m. P. H. The car shut down completely. I had to pull over, the wheel was hard to turn. After pulling over, I started the car again and drove home. Good thing I was not on a major interstate. Both occurred on city streets. August 16, 2018 first incident. March 11, 2019.

While driving my 2007 model Honda odessey, on June 5th 2018 without any warning signs, vehicle shut off, dash went off. Tried to apply brake, it didn't work. Somehow managed to put the park gear to pull over to a left turn line to avoid collision with other vehicles on the road. 911 was alerted since the vehicle was blocking the left turn line and was not able to even open the door to come out of the van. After few minutes I was able to turn it on and there was no engine sign. No injuries or damage was sustained. I continued driving the van home. After two weeks the engine sign came up and we took it to the Honda authorized dealership. They couldn't find anything wrong which causes this engine shutdown abruptly. They were unable to duplicate the problem. After two days the battery went down. So we replaced the battery with a new one. On July 21, my cousin was driving the van and the same happened again. He pulled over to the side and after few attempts it started again and he rode back and parked at his house. On July 24th, we tried to turn it on but the battery was down. We jump started it on 27th and took it to the same dealership. They kept it doing several tests until July 31st and found nothing wrong with it. They ok'd us to take the vehicle since they couldn't duplicate the issue . We are very much concerned to ride it again fear of safety to our own life and the other innocent fellows on the road. We reported the Honda customer service and they suggested to take it to another dealership. They are not willing to take any responsibility if something happens when we drive the van. We searched online and found few others has reported the same kind of incidents for the same model but different year. I am requesting NHTSA investigate on this issue and give your recommendations.

While driving my 2004 Honda Odyssey would completley stahl without any warning, just shut off. . I got the fuel relay replaced and it still stahled numerous times but started back up soon after. . Almost causing numerous accidents just stopping while driving. . Now my van has stahled and this time it will not restart. I have looked up recalls and found one that made sense for a 2004 Honda Odyssey for a fuel pump wire thst has corrosion causing the car to stahl. My vans VIN doesnt fall under this recall. . . . ???.

I was driving in motion in a neighborhood and the engine cut off and could barely pull over cause the steering locked up. Before that, I was leaving a gas station and again the engine shut off while in motion.

On 10/10/2014 while driving the car through an intersection going 45 mph the dashboard lights and the engine shut down. The vehicle would not start and we narrowly avoided an accident while coasting through the intersection. The vehicle would not start again and we pushed the vehicle into a parking lost space. While waiting for someone to jump the car the vehicle start again. Again on 10/11/2014 while turning into a shopping center parking lot the vehicle's engine shut off without warning and would not start again. This again almost resulted in an accident. At this time we consider this vehicle no safe to operate if the vehicle will shut off while driving without warning. There are numerous stories like this happening with Honday Odysseys on the internet.

Tl- the contact owns a 1992 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that while the vehicle was in turned on and in park, the vehicle shut down. The vehicle started after several attempts. The manufacturer was not notified. The private mechanic diagnosed the vehicle as faulty ignition switch. There were not repairs made on the vehicle. The failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 185,598.

On 9/3/13, while driving five children to school in our leased 2011 Honda Odyssey, the engine shut down abruptly and without warning while I was turning through a major 4-way intersection. The steering wheel and brakes immediately locked, leaving me completely paralyzed and unable to control the vehicle. The Odyssey coasted into a yard, narrowly missing a large pole, where I was able to place it into park and restart it. I drove back onto the street and exercised great caution to proceed the short distance to school. Approximately one mile later, the engine completely shut off once again. This has occurred a total of 5 times over the past year (twice while stopped at a red light and three times while the vehicle was in motion - twice on city streets and once on the highway). I delivered the vehicle to our leasing dealer, ganley Honda in north olmsted, ohio, on 9/3/13 for service, where it remains to this day. Ganley Honda's service department has been unable to identify and/or resolve the cause of the engine problem. They have indicated that unless they have "evidence" of the malfunction, the vehicle is fine and safe to drive. Since their computers have generated no error codes and road tests have not replicated the potentially latent malfunction, they maintain that there is no problem. They are now ready to return the vehicle to us for the duration of our lease (we have five months remaining). This is the fifth vehicle over the past 16+ years that we have purchased through this dealership. Given the engine's pattern of shutting down unexpectedly and without warning, leading to the steering wheel and brakes locking, we feel the vehicle is unsafe to drive and are unwilling to place ourselves or our children into it unless the cause of the engine malfunction is identified and the problem is resolved.

While at a stop or while driving the vehicle shuts off. The vehicle was diagnosed with a faulty ignition switch. Honda had a recall on the ignition switch in 2002 for the 1998 Odyssey. The switch was replaced on September 17, 2002. The replacement ignition switch is now having the exact same problem.

The contact owns a 2006 Honda Odyssey. While driving 30 mph, the vehicle shut off. The failure occurred more than five times, twice while making a turn. The contact was able to shift into neutral, which allowed the vehicle to immediately restart. The most recent failure occurred while driving approximately 30 mph. He had an appointment to take the vehicle to the dealer at the time of the complaint. The manufacturer referred him to the dealer. On four occasions the vehicles engine shuts off unexpectedly and without warning, all four occurances happened in heavy traffic.
