38 Ignition Switch problem of the 1999 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 03/15/2011

While driving on the highway the engine just quit, causing a loss of power, power steering, power braking, etc. . . . Fortunately I was able to nurse the car to a spot along the highway to pull over. I was able to get the car restarted after a couple of minutes, and it continued to run fine until I was exiting the freeway, and the engine quit again while approaching the exit ramp. I coasted to the top of the exit ramp and was able to get the car restarted at the top of the exit ramp and drove home. I subsequently took the car to the Honda dealership, where they diagnosed the problem as a faulty ignition switch.

42 Ignition Switch problem of the 1999 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 08/09/2010

On August 9, 2010, our 1999 Honda Odyssey ex stalled while we were idling on an open drawbridge, on hwy 42 in sturgeon bay, WI. This is a two lane bridge, probably nearly a mile long, with no shoulder, so we were looking at a major traffic problem had we not been able to restart the car about a minute later and drive off the bridge. Two days later, August 11, the car stalled while moving on port washington rd, in glendale, WI. At that point the instrument panel went dark. This time, we were able to coast to a stop in the right lane of 4 lane road, and were again able to restart the car, this time within about 30 seconds. The Honda dealer's service department traced the problem to the electrical portion of the ignition switch and replaced the switch. We had the identical problem in 2004, with the Odyssey once stalling on a busy freeway at 60 mph in the center lane. At that time there was recall in effect for this problem and the faulty ignition switch was replaced free of charge. The safety recall needs to renewed for this problem as these switches seem to last about 5 years and then go bad again. We are lucky we did not need to be towed a mile across a bridge, with 4 miles of cars backed up behind us.

44 Ignition Switch problem of the 1999 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 06/28/2010

On June 28, our 1999 Honda Odyssey lx lost all electrical power and engine power while traveling on I-94 e bound between battle creek mi and the exit to I-69. The emergency flashers would not activate. We were able to coast to a stop on the shoulder, then after placing the car in park and switching off the ignition, I was able to restart the car. It ran fine for the next two hours, but the same thing happened while traveling south on I-75 north of dayton, OH. This time, I noticed the gauges came back on and was able to resume the cruise control and proceed with out stopping. In got case, traffic was not so heavy as to be a danger, and luckily we were not in the passing lane. The same failure occurred just before we made it onto our street, but for a shorter time and we continued home. The next night, while returning home on local streets, going about 35mph, this failure occurred again, but this time, we had the headlight on (it was about 9:15pm), and we lost all lighting (interior gauges and exterior). On June 30, the dealer was able to locate the problem - failed ignition switch electrical contacts. The dealer claims this car had been serviced for this problem previously as a result of a recall. I checked your online notices: may 16, 2002 NHTSA: 02v120000. Electrical system ignition switch. This recall needs to be re-issued for this safety related problem. We would have had serious problems in bad weather; loss of windshield wipers as well as lighting and brake lights. And at night, it could have been very bad on the highway. 45 Ignition Switch problem of the 2003 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 05/10/2010

I am the owner of a 2003 Honda Odyssey. I have been having trouble with the ignition switch. I am able to remove the key without the van being placed in park. I do not have to struggle the least amount to get the key to come out; it slips right out of the ignition whether the van is in park or in gear without hesitation. This has occurred accidentally on a few occasions only to be realized when I return to my vehicle. After the first incident, I tried to duplicate it with knowledge and sure enough, the key came right out while the van was still in driving gear.

46 Ignition Switch problem of the 1999 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 05/01/2010

Almost had a real live auto accident. Then researched and came across NHTSA recall #03v423000. Called Honda, and they said, "not our problem, it doesn't apply to your VIN". End of conversation. So, what recourse do I have? what are your recommendations? is there someone else higher up I can contact as opposed to the Honda 800 #? thanks.

47 Ignition Switch problem of the 2004 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 05/01/2010

2004 Honda Odyssey van. The ignition switch and turn signal switch fail to operate correctly. The turn signal switch assembly had to be replaced by the local dealership because the relay switch in the steering column would begin to activate while driving producing an electric odor. The turn signal relay switch was replaced at approx 110,000 miles. The ignition switch is now being replaced because the ignition key cannot be inserted to start the car routinely without being manipulated. When this car was relatively new and under warranty the fan switch had to be replaced. The car now has 150,000 miles. My concern is that the electrical components in the steering column are defective and that the turn signal relay switch had the potential to burn; and the ignition switch could fail during operation of the car. The ignition switch is a defective part, or the part is from an a prior recall of 1999 to 2003 ignition switch's recalled by Honda that were used in later year models. Potentially, the 2004 models should have been included in any recalls of the ignition switches.

48 Ignition Switch problem of the 2004 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 04/13/2010

I have an 04 Honda Odyssey with this same problem as this recall. You can remove the ignition key without shifting to park. It has happened a few times and the van starts rolling. Since the engine is off the brakes are very hard to press. In one incident I was out of the van when it started to roll. You do not have to force it to turn to lock, there is no resistance. The interlock lever of the ignition switch may unexpectedly deform, which can allow the interlock function of a vehicle with an automatic transmission to be defeated. Consequence removal of the ignition key when the gear selector of a vehicle with an automatic transmission has not been shifted to the park position can allow the vehicle to roll away, increasing the risk of a crash. Remedy dealers will remove the original interlock pin and lever within the ignition switch, and replace them with new, designed components. This service will be performed free of charge. The safety recall is expected to begin on or about September 29, 2010. Owners may contact Honda at 1-800-999-1009. Potential units affected 384220 notes Honda (american Honda motor CO. ) r44.

50 Ignition Switch problem of the 1998 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 03/31/2010

Ref: NHTSA campaign 02v120000 for 1998 Honda Odyssey. The ignition switch in my car was replaced in the recall of 2002. I was not having problems then. However, last fall (2009) and this winter (2010) I was experiencing sudden stalls and in some cases dangerous situations when accelerating at intersections, pulling out into traffic etc. My Honda dealer, in March 2010, could not id the problem. I took the car in the same month to an independent mechanic who first thought it was distributor related. They replaced that part. The problem continued. I returned it right away and they did the research to id the problem as the ignition switch. It is now may 12 and there have been no instances of sudden stalls. Problem fixed.

57 Ignition Switch problem of the 1999 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 08/26/2009

1999 Honda Odyssey. Ignition switch failure. Contacted Honda and they told me it had already been addressed in 2002. I asked why wasn't it replaced with a switch that was of newer design and was told again that it has already been addressed. They will not replace. My complaint is that if they replace a recalled item with an item of the same defective design then are they honoring the recall? I would say no, they are only masking the problem without fixing it.

58 Ignition Switch problem of the 1999 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 08/14/2009

While driving down the highway the instruments on the dash went to zero and the engine shut down followed by all of the warning lights illuminating and the engine restarting. This cycle was repeated several times over an approximate five mile stretch. Shedding the electrical loads didn't seem to help the problem. The problem has returned on other occasions but is very intermittent. Now the engine is developing a starting problem. The van starts but dies immediately when you release the key. It sometimes takes multiple attempts before the van will remain running once the key is released. I found a recall from Honda for this issue. The faulty ignition switch was to be replaced with an improved issue for this very issue. I contacted sterling mccall Honda in kingwood, TX to have the switch replaced. They informed me that my van has the new style switch already installed so they refuse to cover the replacement of the faulty switch. Obviously the new switch that was supposed to fix this safety issue is not much better than the original. I feel that Honda should continue to replace the switches until they are able to design a switch that remedies their design flaw.

61 Ignition Switch problem of the 1999 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 05/05/2009

The minivan stalls and losses power (engine turns off and lights go out on the dash) while driving on the road (intermittently). We have already done the wire hardness recall and the ignition switch recall. The symptom takes place every couple of days. I guess I need to take the minivan to the dealer again. What a lemon. I am very dissatisfied with the Honda minivan. I would expect this issue from someone else but not from Honda. My wife almost crashed the first time it happened.

62 Ignition Switch problem of the 2000 Honda Odyssey

65 Ignition Switch problem of the 1999 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 10/13/2008

First incident occurred before stopping in an intersection, as this driver was applying brake the dashboard just flickered and the vehicle stalled and lost power while the key was still in the ignition switch and the vehicle was in drive gear position. The car behind us almost hit us. The van restarted when the gear was put on park and restarted. Second incident occurred this same night, this driver was driving the vehicle at 35 mph when the key dashboard display flickered 3 times then the vehicle lost power and stalled. The engine was not running and driver unable to maneuver vehicle. We were lucky because I was able to pull over without us being hit from behind. We have owned this vehicle for almost five yes and this is the 1st time it happened at the same night. I am very concerned about this because this is the primary transport for my pregnant wife and my 2 kids. As far as I know as the dealer told me before my vehicle was part of a recall with regards to ignition failure 02v120000 and 03v423000. My question will be is the replacement part that they have put on was defective too or is this a new problem. What will be my course of action now? I'm planning to take this vehicle to the dealer tomorrow. My Honda vehicle has always been service by Honda. I would appreciate your reply.

67 Ignition Switch problem of the 1999 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 05/13/2008

My 1999 Honda Odyssey exhibited all the symptoms of the existing Honda safety recall for ignition switch failure. My van stalled many times in traffic causing a road hazard. My van was originally repaired under this recall in may 2002 but, obviously, this repair did not correct the defect. Honda has refused to cover the additional repair under the safety campaign stating they only cover one repair per vehicle.

68 Ignition Switch problem of the 1996 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 03/31/2008

Vehicle began having starting problems - would crank but not always catch and run. Then engine stopped while driving several times, an unsafe situation. Finally would not start again.
