The fuel gage is broken, it reads empty when full. The abs light came on and took it in to fix it. $400. 00 later it was fixed. Now I hear clinking sound from engine. I think the pistons rings are bad. I've read other similar complaints about this vehicle. Nhtsa needs to investigate!.

3 Engine Clicking And Tapping Noises problem of the 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 02/18/2021

My daughter was traveling on the freeway I-80 and 60 miles outside of laramie wyoming, the engine made clunking noises the the car slowed down and she pulled over to side of I 80 this was 18 Feb 2021. She was towed to laramie tire and auto repair. They let us know they found metal shaving in the oil and oil filter and thought it was the lower engine berring that failed. And the engine would need to replaced or rebuilt at a cost of $5500 to $45000. We had the oil changed before she left on the trip to CA. After I complained to Hyundai by email then they sent me a notice of safety recall for her car. Which I got on the 3 April 2021. We owned the car since may of 2019 and did not get this notice in the 2 years we owned it. Now after a total loss of the car we paid 7,000. 00 in may 2019, she traded it in, they would only give her $65. 00 trade in to get another used car. If we would have had this safety recall before the engine failed all this could have been avoided. I am very disapointed in Hyundai and their notification of the safety recall.

4 Engine Clicking And Tapping Noises problem of the 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 12/20/2020

I was driving in colorado on I-70 and as I slowed down to exit, heard a clicking sound. The sound got louder/quicker when I accelerated. I pulled over and checked but saw nothing. I checked the oil and had a service guy at a superstore check it too. He saw no metal parts in the oil. No indicator lights were on. It was a Sunday and nothing was open. I tried to drive farther and was going 35 miles per hour up a hill behind a truck but as soon as I tried to accelerate to pass, I heard a pop. The engine light and the oil light came up. I pulled over and tried to at least accelerate to the freeway exit, but had an immediate loss of power. I had to have the car towed twice - once to the closest town and then back to denver to the dealership (which was again closed on Sunday). The tow truck driver told me there was oil everywhere under the engine. The dealership looked at it a week later and said there was a hole in the side of the engine block.

5 Engine Clicking And Tapping Noises problem of the 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe

6 Engine Clicking And Tapping Noises problem of the 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe

Car had 79000 miles. When driving, motor started making ticking sound. I stopped the car and checked the oil. The broke rod had a number 4 stamped on it.

7 Engine Clicking And Tapping Noises problem of the 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 06/04/2019

Driving down the road and the engine completely shut off without warning and there was no warning lights on the dashboard. Figured it was the alternator, changed it out and now the car makes a very loud clicking noise. Had it diagnosed and it needs new lifters along with possible machining of the pistons/head to get them smooth and the mechanic stated the car was a few hundred revolutions from seizing. Additionally there were small metal shavings in the oil when changed, was told it was a top end problem (hence the lifters). I called the Hyundai dealership in dover DE and they stated this was a known issue but no recall so they're not responsible for fixing it!!.

8 Engine Clicking And Tapping Noises problem of the 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 03/22/2019

While driving on the highway at about 75mph, in the left lane, with the cruise control engaged, my 2014 Hyundai sante fe (3. 5l v6, 94k miles and very well maintained) started to make a quiet ticking noise. The vehicle had been on the highway for about 40 minutes since the last stop. About one minute after the ticking began, boom! huge explosion. Catastrophic engine failure. The engine evidently seized, threw a rod through the block, punctured the oil pan spraying oil everywhere and igniting. Parts were flying out from the behind the vehicle and heavy white smoke was billowing. Luckily I was near an exit ramp and the motorists around me we kind enough to let me over to coast off the ramp. One lady followed me and pulled alongside my vehicle to urgently inform me that my car was on fire. I immediately pulled over and parked the vehicle and me, my wife, and my daughter jumped out. Flames were visible from underneath the car. My wife and another motorist called 911 for fire support. Three gentleman, one in a semi, two in an SUV, had parked on the highway and ran over to our location with a fire extinguisher (about 200 yds). By the time they got there the fire had gone out. The fire department arrived shortly after that and checked the vehicle with an thermo scanner to make sure the fire was out. The incident was terrifying and extremely dangerous.

9 Engine Clicking And Tapping Noises problem of the 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 02/18/2019

So I live in sunny CA. I have a 2013 Santa Fe sport 2. 0t. The ecu relash recall was done three weeks ago and to be honest the car drove great before it was done. Flash forward to Feb 18, 2019. I was returning from a vacation and the ecu recall kicked in. The speed of the vehicle dropped to 60mph. This wouldve been ok in a 55 mph area but all vehicles around me were traveling around 75mph or more. This became a scary scenario as I had to maneuver around two big rigs and cars to get off the freeway. Just so you know the acclerater didnt work only the breaks. I had my wife and kid in the car. This was terrifying. Once I pulled off the road I heard metal on metal clunking sounds. I had to get towed 56 miles to a Hyundai dealership. Two days later Hyundai called me. . . The engine was blown. Full engine replacement currently under way. I just wanted to share my scary story.

11 Engine Clicking And Tapping Noises problem of the 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 12/01/2018

While driving down a 4 lane divided state highway I started to hear a clicking noise coming from front of car; but car was still running. Got worse and started hesitating a little as I pressed the gas pedal. I got stopped at a red light. When I started off from being stopped it would barely go, then it died. Within a few minutes I noticed smoke coming from the engine, got out and saw flames coming out of grill area and underneath the engine area. Called 911, car was on fire! I have many videos of the incident. I had no previous problems with the car before now.

12 Engine Clicking And Tapping Noises problem of the 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 11/12/2018

On Monday, November 12, 2018 I was driving at 60 mph on interstate 64 in newport news, va. I started hearing a clanging noise from the front of the car. I thought a fender had come loose. The noise persisted and I realized it was coming from the engine compartment. My vehicle, with 140,527 miles also had a burning smell although there was no fire. I pulled over to the side of the road and was towed to williamsburg Hyundai dealership in williamsburg, va. They called me later that day and told me that "something had come loose in the engine and made a hole in the engine block". I was told I needed a replacement engine at a cost of $7,200 when the vehicle is only worth about that on the private market. The dealer did not inform me about the issues with the theta ii engines in the 2011-2014 Hyundai sonatas which has the same engine and has been recalled. I called Hyundai customer care and opened a case with them on November 15, 2018. They advised me to have the dealer submit a claim request form concerning the incident and they would determine what to do. Nhtsa needs to recall all 2012 Santa Fe's with the theta ii engine now before someone is killed from a crash caused by an engine malfunction at high speed. My Hyundai case number is 12401191.

13 Engine Clicking And Tapping Noises problem of the 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 10/07/2018

On October 7th 2018 while driving at highway speed on a four lane highway my Hyundai Santa Fe sport turbo began to make noises in the engine (no warning lights came on) then suddenly there was a popping sound coming from the engine compartment, the check engine light came on and the car completely shut off. I coasted to the shoulder and found smoke coming out from under the hood. When I opened the hood I found the whole engine compartment fully engulfed in flames. The car completely burned out while awaiting the fire department.

15 Engine Clicking And Tapping Noises problem of the 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 01/07/2018

2015 Hyundai Santa Fe sport 2. 0t 4cyl wjth the previously recalled (2011-2014) engine. Theta || gdi 2. 0 was running perfectly normal one day no warning lights or messages were displayed besides my tire pressure light . I was driving about 30 miles an hour on flat paved road when the engine started making a knocking/ ticking noise very loudly , the check engine light then came on , I turned the car around to head back home which I was only 4 miles away , the car was losing power to the engine as I kept driving to make it home , I made it to the hill I live on which is steep and tried to go a little faster but the car wouldn't go over 20 mph at this point and the noise is becoming louder and louder . I made it to my drive when the engine shut down . I turned the key off for about a minute and then tried starting it up again , it wouldnt. Turn over and made a loud clunk . I did try having the vehicle repaired as I was told the trouble code it was displaying were p0014 and p0024 , my mechanic diagnosed this as the engine timing solenoids needing to be replaced and the camshaft timing being advanced , I went ahead with the new solenoids and a complete oil change due to there being metal shavings in the oil and on the solenoids . After the repairs were complete it was test driven by the mechanic and the engine shut down once again, the brand new solenoids and oil all had been contaminated with metal shavings . I was then advised that the engine needs to be replaced at my expense as it is out of warranty. I now have a car with an outstanding balance that doesn't run and a very high mechanic bill and nothing to show for it. I will not be purchasing a replacement engine out of pocket as this is a faulty engine.

16 Engine Clicking And Tapping Noises problem of the 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 01/07/2018

My Hyundai is 3 years old with 70,000 miles on it , I've maintained the vehicle according to manufacturerers suggestions . The car had no check engine light on or warnings that something was wrong and the next day I start my car and it's making a very loud ticking noise while driving and slowly losing power until it eventually stalled out . I was able to get the vehicle to my mechanic to have it scanned , the scan showed the exhaust solenoid has failed and the timing was advanced , again this happened from the car running perfectly fine one day to the engine shutting down the next . So the mechanic took the solenoids out and found metal shavings covering them . I've since read numerous complaints about thie type of engine in this vehicle the theta 11 gdi 2. 0t , which has beeen recalled 2011-2014 models . This is very disheartening to hear that with a car that is 3 years old my engine is now blown and needs to be replaced at my cost , I still owe a lot of money on this car . I've read that Hyundai knows these engines are faulty for having metal shavings in the chambers but yet they're still putting them in brand new vehicles , now I am stuck with a lemon basically and have to shell out 6 grand for another engine that this could possibly happen again before it's paid off . This clearly is a manufacturer issue not the owners.

23 Engine Clicking And Tapping Noises problem of the 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 06/30/2017

Takata recall. Religiously in for routine oil change and maintenance, not due for an oil change for 1200 more miles. The vehicle sat for 7 days while I was on vacation, ran fine before it sat. Drove the vehicle for 4 days after returning from vacation. About 6pm coming home from work, opposite from rush hour traffic. I suddenly heard slight ticking sound when I pressed on the gas to accelerate quickly getting on to the highway, I also noticed the rpms were high and not much power behind accelerating. Drove about 10-15 miles, ticking got louder when accelerating until there was a constant ticking and rattle in the front end. Parked the car let it sit for a night. Went to take it to the garage, upon starting the car there was ticking from under the hood, rattleling, and shaking, turned the vehicle right off. No check engine light, no low oil light, no dash notification lights light up indicating anything was wrong, temperature seemed normal. Popped the hood to check fliuds. Checked oil dipstick, dry as dry could be. No coolant, no oil. Have to have it towed to the dealership, afraid engine is shot! if I was to continue to drive the vehicle it could have seized up in the middle of the highway, causing an accident or loss of control. I am thankful my 17 year old was not behind the wheel. I am sure a heafty engine replacement bill is coming my way.

29 Engine Clicking And Tapping Noises problem of the 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 12/18/2016

On Dec 18th driving on a county road outside of gunnison, CO my 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe sport was in motion and a clicking noise began in engine. After ~1 hr and after checking fluid levels a loud pop in the engine caused it to cease functioning while in motion (~45-55 mph) leaving my stranded in dangerously cold temperatures that night. I was forced to have the vehicle towed to dealership where, with no loaner cars and a 6 week wait on a new engine, was forced to purchase another vehicle from Hyundai with no explanation of what happened to the engine. A few weeks ago I received a notice from Hyundai corporate stating there is a known problem and a safety recall (NHTSA campaign number: 17v-226). It is clear that Hyundai knew of this problem and not only did not reimburse any expenses related to the engine issue and put me in a situation requiring me to purchase another vehicle from them.

31 Engine Clicking And Tapping Noises problem of the 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 11/13/2016

I was driving on the interstate at 70 mph and started a faint rattelling noise coming from the motor compartment. I thought it might be a wheel bearing. Traveled 3-4 more miles, then with what I would describe as complete motor failure, aloud clattering noise from the engine compartment and lose of power happened. I immedietly pulled over to the side of the highway a and snd looked under the hood. I checked the oil level and it was fine, but it was very black and smelled burnt. I called for roadside assistance and the vehicle was hauled to the nearest Hyundai dealer. 1st thing the service dept. Person did was check the oil and said that it was fine also. They then took the vehicle inside, they drop the oil pan and found pieces of metal they thought to be from bearings from the bottom end of the motor. I had just bought this used vehicle in September 2016 and the motor failed in November 2016 almost 2 months to the day I bought it. It was purchased from a Hyundai dealer so the vehicle was inspected and certified. The motor and the turbo both had to be replaced at the cost of $6364. 11 out of my pocket. The service manager tried to get some sort of goodwill help from Hyundai and they refused. To say I'm not happy is an understatement, I did file a complaint with Hyundai motors USA. I've been doing investigating on the internet and I'm finding other people with similar problems with their 2013 2. 0t Santa Fe's.

32 Engine Clicking And Tapping Noises problem of the 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 09/10/2016

My 2008 Santa Fe with 109,000 miles suddenly shut off on me when approaching a stop sign. The stop sign was on a slight turn and I never realized it until I had no power steering and saw all the lights lit on the dash. I put car in park and it restarted with no issues. Later that day I went to start the car and engine made a loud clunk sound and car shook for a second. I decided not to drive it that day. It has been 3 days since the first shut down and so far the car has been running like normal. Called Hyundai and made note of my complaint but didn't seem to know about this issue or so maybe they are not at liberty to say if they have. They never gave me an answer except to take it to a dealer to see if they can diagnosis the problem. I see recall was put out for the 2010-2012 model years but not for older models.

33 Engine Clicking And Tapping Noises problem of the 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 05/17/2015

After 141,000 miles the engine threw a rod, I had heard a clicking noise for a while but was assured it was a normal engine sound after taking it to the dealer. I change my oil regularly and have my slips, the engine completely failed while driving. In the last year and a half I am having to replace approximately one low beam headlamp per month.

34 Engine Clicking And Tapping Noises problem of the 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 01/13/2015

I was driving to a stop light on a down hill slope with my whole family in the car when all of the sudden my car turned off. All at once my check engine light came on, my battery light came on, and I couldn't get the car to re-start. I turned on the emergency flashers and at the middle of a busy intersection I tried to restart my car but nothing happened. A few moments later I tried again and it started but it wouldn't let me accelerate almost at all (through an intersection!). There was also a clicking sound coming from the front of the car. I pulled into a parking lot, afraid if I was going to be able to drive anywhere, turned the car off, waited about five minutes, restarted it, successfully. I let it idle for a while unsure what else to do. I proceeded to drive home with no other incident. The clicking was off and on the entire drive home but has since gotten quieter.

35 Engine Clicking And Tapping Noises problem of the 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 08/21/2013

I was at a light, as I let go of the break, I heard a loud clanking sound and the front of the car shook and the car immediately died. I tried to restart, made the same sound and died. Called roadside and had vehicle towed to dealership after an hour and a half being stuck at a light/intersection. I was told the next day that my car suffered a "catastrophic engine failure". No codes came up. They dropped the pan and said metal pieces fell out! I was livid! I've only had the car less than a month, only about 1500 miles and the engine went out! thank god, I just dropped the kids off to school and the road wasn't so busy as to cause an accident. I had no warnings from starting the car, no messages from blue link. Service manager at dealership states I would not have received any warning, because it happened quick which is why it is labeled as "catastrophic failure". What if this happened with my kids in the car, on the freeway, or traveling? so a replacement engine is being ordered from southern California. I don't trust it. I reported it to corporate, which sent to regional office. And I am awaiting a response. I originally requested a replacement vehicle but after reading the complaints on NHTSA, I want my money back. I don't trust this car anymore, I don't feel safe and I don't want the thought in the back of my mind that there could be a chance of something else happening! my husband is deployed right now, and what I deserve is some peace of mind and not put myself or my children at jeopardy of a possible repeat engine failure, cracked front axle, issues with acceleration or whatever else that can occur that I've read on this site. This is a definite safety issue and should not have to wait for more complaints to do something about it! please help me resolve this with getting my money back! a brand new car should not have suffered a catastrophic engine failure!.
