1 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 08/15/2023

On 8/14/23/ I got the first oil change for my new car at the dealer. On 8/15/23 as I cruised at 65mph on a crowded detroit expressway, I pushed further on the accelerator to get away from an aggressive driver on my tail. Nothing happened; the car engine shut down. No warning, no lights, no beeping, no alarm, no dash screen message. Dead engine in the middle lane with cars all around. After I miraculously made it to the shoulder of the freeway, the engine light and oil light came on. Not before, only after the car died. The dipstick indicated the car was out of oil. Unbeknownst to me the parts used to change the oil the previous day were defective. The oil had leaked out over the course of the day and over night. (I later discovered my driveway full of oil). The problem, additional to the defective parts is the fact that I had no warning that the engine shut down was imminent. I had no warning that the car had no oil. I came close to getting killed that day, and still have nightmares. Had I known the car was oil-less, I would not have driven it. This is a car that beeps and pushes and tells one how to drive at every juncture. It tells low gas, low tire pressure, etc. Why would it not warn about the low oil or the imminent engine shutdown??? I was told the car has a “failsafe” feature for the oil. How safe is a failsafe if the driver gets killed while the car engine protects itself???.

9 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 11/14/2019

When sitting at red lights, the engine completley shuts off. I have to push the push start at least 10 times before the engine will restart. This keeps happening. I'm worried I will get stranded. I would like to leave it with Hyundai service, but to my understanding they do not offer rentals. My vehicle only had 16000 miles when this issue began. I paid 38000 for this vehicle and now to my understanding, to have it serviced I will have to pay for the rental. My safely should be more of a concern. Hyundai motor America should be very concerned. They should have requested a tow and offered a rental as soon as I mentioned this issue!!! no, instead I have to leave it at the dealer in hopes the issue is found quickly, so I don't run up a huge rental bill plus pay my monthly car note. What if my vehicle just shuts down going 65 on the freeway? will I have braking power? I don't know what to do. I could be in major danger.

11 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 09/10/2019

Takata recall. We were driving on a state hwy at 55mph and starting to hear a knock from the engine. In the year and a half of owning the vehicle there were no issues. No indicator of issues or anything. We even had it serviced 2 weeks prior and there were no problems. Within a 2 mile span of the knock starting the vehicle engine seized and shut down. Fortunately, no one was behind us because there was nowhere safe to pull over to for about 1/8mile so we coasted and crept at about 5mph to a driveway where we then were towed to a safer location. No lights or indicators came on until the moment the vehicle shut down. Apparently, this is common with 2013 model Hyundai Santa Fe sport engines after discussing it with their customer service representative.

15 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 02/15/2019

In February 2019 while driving down a highway with 5 occupants in the car, I was flagged down by another driver who noticed sparks coming from under my vehicle. I pulled over and immediately the car shut down. It was towed and later determined that the engine had blown at 88,000 miles. Even though the vehicle gave no prior indication of loss of oil pressure or any issues with the status of the engine, the Hyundai warranty group turned down the claim stating that maintenance level was not followed to their specifications. I noticed that Hyundai has experienced similar issues with several other recalled engines in their product group. I have spoken numerous times to both Hyundai and the dealer to work out a compromise to repair the vehicle without any support from either. I have owned vehicles for over 40 years, with my last one reaching over 250k miles and have never had a engine blow. I can't believe this is an acceptable situation for both the overall safety or performance of Hyundai products.

16 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 02/08/2019

While driving straight down a busy city street at about 35 mph, the engine stopped and the car shut off without warning. I was nearly hit by a passing car when I stepped out of the vehicle. It would not start again. I was towed to the local Hyundai dealer who said the engine needed to be replaced. They also said it is still under warranty with just 40,000 miles, but that Hyundai may not cover the replacement/repair. The authorized dealer was required to send a detailed description and photographs to Hyundai for them to determine if they would honor the warranty or not. I did receive an engine recall notice and had it inspected. I'm baffled as to why Hyundai may not pay for it.

Failure Date: 12/14/2015

I noticed that when I was in park, the car would just shut off. This happened three times within a few week's time. I was concerned and wondered if the car would ever just shut off while I was driving on the freeway or a busy street. To my horror, it happened! a few days ago I was turning into a parking lot and the car just shut off!. . . There was a car behind me that came to a screeching halt! again my greatest fear is that the car will stall on me while the vehicle is in motion and if that happens on a road where cars are travelling at high speeds, then I would probably not live to tell the story.

35 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 07/14/2014

While driving at freeway speed, car shut down unexpectedly, and restarted. During interim 20 seconds, attempted to pull vehicle to left shoulder as I was driving in far left lane. I felt "engine drop" or a feeling whereas the car no longer felt powered, cue that the engine had went off. Power steering went manual along with other power assist devices like power steering. On dirt shoulder of freeway attempting with manual brakes and steering to bring vehicle off roadway. Vehicle restarted during maneuver. Still moving at safe speed attempted to merge back onto the freeway, having not yet decelerated enough yet to continue to pull over. . . . Clear and dry conditions in north la county. This vehicle however has always had "overly responsive" or "very tight" steering, for lack of better terminology. I leased the vehicle and did not fully realize, until some time passed, what this 'steering characteristic' would mean in the future, in an event requiring accurate and responsive steering combined with the ability to maintain control. The sudden engine power resuming, combined with, what this writer would describe as "tight steering" to begin with, made the vehicle roll. The vehicle, with what felt like a "high center of gravity" always felt like it would roll if one were to have to move quickly to avoid something in the road for example. I did not realize this feature during my test drive. Being a lessee I was obligated to keep the vehicle for 3 years. The vehicle rolled several times while crossing 3 lanes of an occupied northbound highway 14. A sudden jolt resulted in a fracture of l1 vertebrae. During roll, jack became undone from where it was factory mounted underneath lift up cover, and had never been removed. Flailing around in the vehicle now was this heavy scissor jack bouncing around in the vehicle compartment with me. I am glad to be alive.
